Kit, my Border Collie puppy learning “here” and “look back “commands
Kit, my border collie puppy is now 12 months old. My son and I are continuing her training. Today we are working on “here “ and “look back “. The “here” command means for the dog to come toward the handler until the handler stops the dog in the better position to influence the livestock to go where you want them to go. The “look back “ command means to literally look back and go gather the livestock that were left behind. #bordercollie #farmlife #ranchdogs #sheep #highdesert #bordercollieworld #countryliving #ranchlife #farmdog #sheepdogs #cowdogs #highdesertfarming #highdesertranching #threegenerationfarming

Kit the Border Collie puppy training update
มุมมอง 5207 หลายเดือนก่อน
Kit the border collie puppy is now 12 months old. We’ve had to postpone her herding training for a few months due to winter weather, snow, ice, rain and mud. She picked up right where she left off. With spring weather coming, her training will really pick up now. She’s a wonderful herding puppy with strong instincts.

There are plenty of shortcomings but they are super helpful and very functional. I believe you can never go wrong with plenty of strategically placed gates. You are amazing good teacher. I have a litter of 4 puppies. 13 weeks old now . I Don't have sheep. I have saanen goats . I have the puppies in dog panels seeing the goats all the time. They go crazy when goats are out of barn and in site? When they are lose ( one or two together, they scare me . Because the run chasing the goats and jumping to nip / bite them . There mom and dad pure bred , I never had any one to train them . But they I made them to leave the goats alone . So they are in the midst of the flock like the great Pyrenees. My question if I may please. Shoul I hide / remove the babies from seeing the goats ?. I like to start training as your instructions . And Is it Normal for them to want to bite / chasing ? And Is there a hope to train the 2 years old mom and dad . They play sneaking at each other like cats do when they are laying low to bounce on a bird . If you have time to reply? I love to train them while looking for homes for them . 🙏

@@gracelayoun7836 hi there. You’ve asked some good questions. Yes, I would remove the puppies from seeing the goats. It will cause problems when their livestock training begins. Usually I introduce my puppies to livestock then leave the training up to the new owners. The first training to do with them is lead training. I don’t do too much obedience on my puppies until they get started on livestock. Once they discover their instincts and get a good balance on them (meaning they stay on the opposite side of the livestock from you) and they have a good attention span, then I start the foundational training. In this video I’m saying the direction that my puppy is going but it’s better when they’re little to just circle without any commands. I don’t want to put pressure on them. I just want them to have fun experiencing and discovering their instincts. As they mature and start understanding that they are working with you then you can start telling them what they’re doing with the commands. Keep it short and fun leaving them wanting more. As far as the biting and nipping goes, it sounds like they have good instincts. I don’t get after them for that. I just tell them “bite” then try to redirect them to circle. If they get in with the livestock and start working/chasing try to set them up in a balance with your hands up then catch the puppy with praise and don’t scold. Be careful to not get run over by the goats. 😉 As far as the parents go it’s possible to train them but it will be a challenge to free them up to work since they have been taught not to work. I hope my answers make sense. I’m happy to answer any questions for you. Best wishes to you!

Thank you for explaining how you got the sheep in there! That is so funny, but I never considered that you could make an opening in the fence around the feeder. I use my round bale feeder as a brooder for my meat chickens in the spring, so right now, I have it wrapped tightly with chicken wire. I planned to try your training method by just tipping the bale feeder up and then getting the sheep or goats inside and then gently putting the feeder down over them. Of course, I could never get away with doing this with my sheep, but I think I can get a friend to just hold my two goats still, and I can tip the bale feeder over them. At least I am going to try it! My pup, Greta, is a wild child like Rip, so I think I should probably work more on the foundation training before I try this. I just watched your videos from last year on the half-hitch lead training method, which I am going to try. I live in Upstate NY, and I move my cattle twice a day to fresh pasture. I have not been able to take Greta with me to do this, as she wants to get right at those cattle and move them around, which really scares me. I take her hiking a couple times a day, and pretty much have her with me all the time except when I move the cattle. I am thinking that I should get much better control on her for her safety before I even let her see the cattle. I want to start with working the sheep first anyway. My older border collie, Ian, works the cattle and sheep for me daily. Ian has a fantastic outrun, but he could use some more of your training tips, as he pretty much always wants to go 100 miles per hour! After a long outrun, he will start to work at a slower pace, but when I have him first bring out the sheep in the morning, he goes way too fast. I am going to try your method of having him lie down, walk up, and hold. I am really learning a lot from your videos and appreciate the effort you have put into them. Hope this message wasn't too long! Thank you very much!

Probably a dumb question, but how did you manage to get those three sheep in the round bale feeder? I can't imagine getting three (or one!) of my sheep in there like that. I do have a couple of goats that I could do that with, so I think I will try that with my 5-month-old Border Collie pup! Thanks for your GREAT videos!

    • @bwrstockdogtraining2723
      @bwrstockdogtraining2723 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@elvasvendsen7700 Hi there! Definitely not a dumb question. There’s quite a trick to it. That’s a training exercise I teach new handlers. My white border collie Jay makes it so easy for me. We team up and carefully use pressure and release with proper positioning to influence the sheep to go in. The key is to influence them making it seem like it’s their idea instead of forcing them. I only use the round feeder when the puppy is too fast and keeping the novice handler safe from getting run over by the sheep. Once Gina and Rip got a good idea on circling they graduated to a 20’ round pen. Best wishes to you.

Hi. She has 6 commands so far. ‘Here’ is her call off and she resists it. We’re using it to have her come toward the handler for pinpoint positioning. She’s learning that ‘here’ doesn’t always mean being taken off the livestock.

Do you ever find a difference in male and female puppies with either being easier to train than another gender. Or if gender of handler seems to matter. Currently looking to train my first stock dog and wanting to know how to pick a puppy from a litter if gender matters or any tips on testing a group of young puppies for temperament

Hi There! Great questions, tough to answer. I’ll try to answer the best I can through my personal experience. gender of the puppy does not matter in training. I don’t think gender of the handler matters as long as you teach with authority. You need to be the leader of the “pack” so to speak. What does matter is personality, of both the dog and the handler. Border collies come in two types, sensitive, softhearted or hardheaded with people. They are both good with livestock. It so just happens that my two sensitive border collies are my toughest on livestock. You just have to adjust your training and handling style accordingly. Some people with bolder loud personalities don’t work well with sensitive collies. When I choose a puppy, I want to know the breeders and I want to know and observe the parent dogs. how are their instincts? How good do they work with livestock. Are they timid, aggressive, confident, friendly, and social? If I like the parents, I will consider a puppy. I’ll choose one whose personality I like. By eight weeks old, they may show instinct if you put them in with sheep, but not always. That’s why I want to know and like the parents. I have a video on my channel called “preparing your herding puppy for livestock training “ that has a lot of good tips for you. I hope I’ve helped. Best wishes to you and good luck.

Hi! I tighten and loosen my lip and cheek muscles to achieve different sounds. When I tighten my cheek muscles it feels like I’m pulling them back. I also control the flow of air using different pressures. It takes a lot of practice. I try to whistle simple songs when I practice. I practice away from my dogs and husband. It drives them crazy hahaha Best of luck to you! You’ve got this.

What would be the best way for my border collie to not be so timid or scared when moving cattle because when I say “sick em” means to movie forward she just stands there and I have to come closer for the cow to move for her to want to chase them on her own

Because at my Dairy Farm, we were in a tie stall barn, and she just seems very hesitant to do on our own. If I’m standing there, she’ll do it perfectly fine on her own but not when I’m not.

Hi. I’m wondering how old your border collie is? When we train our puppies we tell them push when they bite the sheep without worrying about correcting them. As they mature and we start putting commands on the pup we’ll start controlling the push command. We tell our dogs push to bite and get the livestock moving. We get behind the puppy which moves the livestock as we tell the puppy to push push. The puppy thinks they’re the one that’s moving the livestock and we praise the puppy as she’s doing it. When it’s an older dog that hasn’t been taught this they sometimes don’t feel as invincible as pups or younger dogs and lack courage. You’re doing the right thing to help your dog. Get behind your dog and let him think he’s the one moving the cattle as you tell him to push or whatever command you’re using for that and praise him as he’s doing it. I have a video called “A training exercise to teach your dog courage and confidence”. Just be careful to not put your dog or yourself in harms way. Use calm cattle. Most of my dairy friends don’t use dogs. A calm dog would probably be good. You know better than I. Hope I helped. Good luck to you.

She just turned about 7 months old she’s getting better and better slowly. It’s just she’s just so skittish and not wanting to do it completely on her own yet she’ll just stand until you really get by her and then she’ll move them.

I’m just wondering I don’t really have like a round pen like you guys do because it’s like a Dairy Farm we don’t have sheep or anything like that I was just wondering how should I train her because the only thing closest to it would be calves in a pen
