Even if your receiver and flight controller don't support RSSI, you can still put RSSI into your Betaflight OSD. You just need to be running OpenTX. I'll show you how!
This video is an update to Oscar Liang's article, "GET RSSI IN PPM/SBUS CHANNEL WITH TARANIS". l used to refer people to that article, but it's a bit out of date with OpenTX 2.2 and Betaflight 3.2.4.

I got the Kopis 1 because of you as my first drone this spring. I was practicing with little whoops indoors and the big scary race drone was still very intimidating! Now, thanks to you and other really cool channels, I am already flying acro FPV and getting into the trick tutorials. What a great hobby with folks like you, teaching us something EVERYDAY! Keep up the great work, liked and subbed!

Worth to mention: If you have activated RSSI_ADC value in the config tab you will not be able to save the channel setting (think that was posted here, too). Took me a while to figure that out. Now it´s working! Thanks again :)

HI Joshua, I am just getting started in FPV and I am finding your videos to be so informative. I have a QX 7 Tx and FS HD2 goggles and I am a bit confused about what and how much telemetry I am going to need to see on both. I want to fly safe and this RSSI information is one thing that I deem necessary to do so. Have you considered making a video that encompasses setting up a totally Frsky based quad using the QX 7 and supplying information on the best receiver to match with it? I would think it would help a lot of pilots like myself. There is so much to learn about building a quad and how everything fits together. I appreciate your work and tutorials very much. Thanks for your time.

This same setup has worked for over a year. JC had this on his channel. I'm happy you did it here as well, since your channel is ongoing. Has to be a telemetry receiver. The xm+ will not work this way but it automatically puts rssi on channel 8 or channel 16 depending on the firmware you use.

    • @Fliptality
      @Fliptality 6 ปีที่แล้ว

yes. if it does not work or show a fix rssi value of 50, then you need to update firmware on your XM+.

I have a radiolink AT9 transmitter and the little receiver i use (r6dm?) doesn't have rssi pad. however, latest firmware for the AT9 lets you send rssi on an aux channel and this appears to work! tested on the bench only so far, but like your video, it appears to work. put my hand in front of the antenna and it drops, so it's definitely doing something! and it's much simpler to set up in the radio than in your demo.

  • @stephenmutch4034
    @stephenmutch4034 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are CLI commands which set the RSSI offset and scale. With these you can adjust the readout value on your OSD to match the RSSI telemetry page on your Taranis. The default value in Betaflight 4.2 was offset = -10 so my OSD readout was 10% low. The setting below gave me matching readouts.
    set rssi_scale = 100
    set rssi_offset = 0

  • @MartijnvanGene

Joshua, you can edit the RSSI unit in the Telemetry screen. Just go to the RSSI sensor, press Enter and Edit. Scroll down to the unit (probably dB, as per default) and change it to %.

I've set up the microminim now, trying to get rssi from channel 8 of my FC, but the value I see on my osd for rssi keeps jumping around (I have calibrated the msowd using the sticks menu on my taranis and it does show 0for rssi when the radio is off and 100 when it's on, but the value jumps erratically down as low as 17!).

Hi Joshua, first of all thanks for your lessons, they are so helpful. Im
having issue with correct rssi value on my iflight cidora sl5 through
osd. I have r-xsr reciever and Im stuck with constant rssi value of 43
in betaflight config, where on taranis i have rssi near 100 (goes up and
down depending on how far i have gone, its ok). I thought the problem
was in old firmware 4.0, current 4.1.3, but issue is still there. I just
want to to be value to be the same both on taranis and in osd. I used
telemetry aux for sending value to osd. In reciever tab rssi value is
set to chosen RSSI channel, but normally rssi is visible when it is set
to analog mode in Configurator tab. In CLI rssi scale is set to 100.
Could you please advise on what to try? Many thanks from Russia!

  • @MrJarrod

Classic JB . Thanks for this made my RSSI work better . Problem I was having was even though I have rssi on my osd. The maximum signal was 33%??????? Standing right next to my drone. But on the taranis it measured 87DB. It should have measured 100% on the on OSD. OnCE I did your fix, the osd now measures 100% on the osd and the taranis is 87DB. Much easier to calcuate distanced to drop out now. AWESOME!

Only use Spektrum Serial Telemetry RX’s and the reason that I only use those receivers is that I get battery voltage and RSSI sent to my radio and it is told to me verbally which is my preference as I personally don’t like to be distracted by OSD. Interesting vid if I ever jump ship and I like to see the competition 👍

Great vid Josh! Just got an XM+ RX for GTR90. Loaded latest firmware on it from FRSKY website (on TX SD card then wrote to XM+ RX from TX). Bound RX and TX fine. Have RSSI set up in BetaFlight on Aux 12 (channel 16). Betaflight shows in Receiver Tab that the RSSI on Aux 12 is working. However, the RSSI value in both BetaFlight and on OSD shows a value of 10-12 only. I have not put the quad back together becuase of this. Am I missing something. Is this the actual value of the RSSI (I'm guessing so) or do I have the RSSI range set up improperly (if that's even possible)? Thanks go out to anyone who can/will help.

  • @c0deless

Hi Joshua, i have the XM+ i have RSSI on my OSD, is there a way to have Taranis read out the RSSI ? or be able to use the taranis to check your signal strength? For example, if i lose my Quad in tall grass and i have no video, is there a way to use my Taranis pin point in what direction i need to look for my quad.

thank you for helping me out on getting my mobula 7 hd in air finally. im getting used to the fpv flying/specially the quad...its going slow but it is fun. one thing i noticed is that I am not able to have my OSD displayed on my goggles. i have set it u in betaflight...... as much as i understood it... or not. The only thing that shows up is the cross hairs in the middle of the screen. i have played with that tab and settings in there but not sure what i am missing.

Joshua Bardwell, how are my friend? when I discover new sensors(qx7) nothing happens. I actually have a value of 18 in osd that rises as I get a weaker signal, can you help with this problem?

Hi Joshua, is there any way to do the same on the BetaFPV Lite Radio 2 SE radio? I am not able to get the RSSI by using an Frsky R-XSR reveiver. However, if I use an Frsky XM receiver, the radio is able to get the RSSI

With a long press in the menu INPUTS I do not have a tab TELEMETRY ( Taranis qx7)There are all tabs - except telemetry.
    What could be the problem?
    Thank you.

Ok I followed along and did everything the way you did, I have telemetry output enabled on my FC and I can see the telemetry working on the receivers tab, but when I enable it on my Aux channel it won't show up on the Setup tab in Betaflight. Using an X4RSB receiver
