Seriously. I just went through a ton of work and trouble shooting to set up a compass on my quad, and now I'm finding out that I can't even get the heading and other related features to show up in the OSD anyway. I've been dealing with--and shaking my fists at--DJI since all they made were flight controllers; so, I don't expect much.
Finally new beta flight with LQ AND arm errors! Nice!
Betaflight should just pull this into the main release. It's the only FC software now that doesn't have warnings and LQ for DJI. But they don't do it for ideological reasons... And just continue to have a "no you fix it" spat with DJI.
lols no its not happening because adding hacks too the code base to support what is a dead product just means cleaning it up later... if you don't like it don't fly BF.. want it changed then make DJi ( who couldn't care about you in the slightest ) or caddex who might listen..

Thanks Joshua! As someone who owns just DJI Goggles, and recently installed Crossfire I ran into this issue today. Was out flying my new quad (with crossfire) and looking through DJI Goggles OSD ….I had no idea how my LQ was or when I might be pushing things. Which is the whole reason I moved to crossfire (better signal and range). All I see today is DJI’s bars turning red which completely freaks me out after my 1st run today. Thanks again! 👍👍
LQ on AUX8 displayed as RSSI is just fine, got my like anyway for the effort ;)
How are you confirming it is indeed LQ you are seeing and not RSSI? I cannot get mine to change. It's showing RSSI only and there's not a damn thing I can do about it

@@rbt5785 in your tracer or crossfire set the channel use to LQ and then just use RSSI on Betaflight side, (betaflight does not know the difference) but what you see will be LQ as provided by the RX Module
@@nullx8 Thanks. I did finally get it to work. I was only power cycling the quad and when I power cycled both the quad and the transmitter I got it to work
This is a really nice implementation fair play. What’s a shame is it takes a custom build. I’m the first to scream DJI should be implementing Canvas Mode however realty is it’s not looking like it’s going to happen. It would be better for users of the BF devs did the right thing for users and consider implementing this in the official releases.
I know they don’t like to do things for specific manufactures however the realty is there as so many users of the DJI system it’s surely the right thing to do to give them a better experience than just stand your ground and say sod DJI it’s their problem.
There have been a few things Iv seen OS devs turn their noses up that just hurts the users, it’s a same that happens.
I completely agree with you , LQ on a specific AUX is enough for me but more than that implementing rx loss and other critical warning are the base for a correct and complete flight experience and now BF devs cannot get away with it , DJI systems are growing day by day …hope for devs re-thinking
@@Simofly just use ANY BF fork and they've implemented Warnings as Craftname. It's only BF that believe themselves at a higher moral level.
This is a very nice and very easy way to get the same goal accomplished. I don't believe that bf devs should have to take their time to implement and maintain this when it breaks in future releases. They didn't fold and cave in for HDZero/sharkbyte users, so I don't think that they should for dji users. Look at the DJI platforms. Almost all of them, people use some kind of hackey work around to get what they need out of the system. If you buy into dji you should realize that you are buying into a technology that has been abandoned by the manufacturer. And be ready to do stuff like this to get what you want out of the system. 🤷♂️
@@JoeMommaFPV they don't have to take time to implement or maintain. The code is already committed, just refused. Works in ALL other BF/CF forks and have never broken. Just like analog osd doesn't break. This is a moral high ground war where BF believe punishing the users of dji fpv somehow makes them better people. This is a perfect example of how theoretical principles that doesn't matter can lessen the product. Nobody wins in this scenario. This is not what this hobby or even open source is about. This costs BF literally nothing yet all dji fpv users have to compile their own version to get warnings. The osd code is already messy with warning logic mixed in with the osd logic. Analog osd doesn't use canvas mode either. The implementation I've been using and the one I made myself that was away less pretty is not even 10 lines of code.
@@KnizzleHizzle well I don't agree with you there. They made a statement. Canvas mode was implemented and made by them to work for this exact reason. And I'll say again. They didn't cave for HDZero and their users. They won't cave for dji and their users either. All these people up in arms about bf devs not implementing this, if all the same kept sending emails to dji and caddx support over the 3 years the system has been out and the requests have been ignored, maybe they would listen. Seems that you guys have a lot of entitlement and high expectations from open source developers. Do you pay them anything? Do you support betaflight or its developers in any way? I gaurantee you that if all the DJI users that wanted this signed up for betaflight patreon and were asking them in their patreon group after hundreds or thousands sign up they would listen and then REALLY they would be dicks for ignoring their supporters. But you guys are out here asking for something that they said they would not do all while offering nothing in return but just constantly complaining. Go complain to the source. Caddx and dji. The ones who DID get your money. Bf developers get non of your money. I have been a patreon of theirs for years now. How about gather all your dji users and massively sign up for their patreon and I am willing to bet they would listen and do what you ask. Put your money where your mouth is and stop crying and complaining about something they already fixed (canvas mode) because they won't implement a hackey work around. Put up your money and ask them then. You buy a betaflight fc that doesn't support the devs at all. So drop the entitlement and use the means that are available. Like this video here. Seems like an easy enough fix.
so Mr JB... I have for ever done my LQ by giving up a AUX channel (crossfire), I have the 99 displayed in the dji goggles, and the tango 2 gives audio warnings... will / is this way in this here video better?? thanks man - have to say thanks probably like all of us, you are the person who helped me understanf fpv / quads more than anyone. I'm wondering why this is better? Giving up an unused aux channel seems much easier and stable, Joshua could you extrapolate on why it's better?
@@georgefuchs3223 In what way would it be more stable? It's just a patch that changes a couple strings. Easier, barely. More accurate than the base workaround anyways.
There's something about running g 8 channel instead of 12 that helps with latency crossfire anyways so it just goes back to potentially having to run 12 channels
This way is better because it reports rfmode which the aux channel method doesn't give you. Also, knowing both RSSI dBm and LQ can be helpful in detecting damaged receiver antenna and other such problems.
Great video. Guys; several custom firmware on that page. Make sure to take the correct one which is not the latest (just go for latest dji rssi firmware)
@DJI: I love the Goggles, i love the cams, the Polar in dark and the better one in sunlight. dont have a problem with delay. If there is a company with a new product which has almost he same level with all the things we wait so long, i will switch to it no matter the price. DJI is like apple, you can always sell you stuff for a good price. just release this canvas firmware or tell us, if there is any chance to get this in near future.
HDzero is way to go, resolution is unfortunate a bit worse
@@MrMayex the hdzero looks just like a better analog setup. Analog has snow and static type of break up and as much as that used to be ok, digital is where it's at. Why bother spending money for just marginally better but not actually being hd resolution cause that is where hdzero is at. DJI is digital and actually hd. It is truly nice to look at when flying. So maybe if you race and lag/delay is gonna make the difference between making the turn or hitting a gate etc then sure but otherwise, DJI is way better and the way to go. Guess it's a personal preference but I got much better at flying after I picked up my first set of DJI goggles. No I have 2 so other people can see kinda what I see when I'm flying and j got the analog adapter plate for my v1 goggles so I can fly my legacy quads but legit, way prefer to not even mess with those drones and won't except for rare use cases like a tiny hawk flying around inside

@@twistedsocal im in the same boat as you. when you look at the screenshot comparisons it not good enough to get me to switch, i fly really dangerous stupid shit up and down busy streets while im hidden on a rooftop and i have never had a problem once with the latency modulation. hdzero is not even remotely close in resolution and penetration to get me to even try it, ive seen videos of people flying in cities and its got tons of break up in every video
@@dominicklittle9828 exactly, I don't have a ton of wide open space to fly and honestly don't feel like risking a go pro every time if fly just in case there is a freak chance of failsafe somewhere that I won't be able to recover my quad so the DVR from the DJI system makes not flying with a GoPro fully a viable option, if they still made the session 5 I would maybe consider it but again, why? The resolution just isn't there and the analog style signal with static interference and whatnot just doesn't do it for me. Glad I'm not the only one who feels like that. Tell you what though, if DJI wanted to make a ton more money they would sell an OLED upgrade to their goggles. Even though they usually are not as bright the higher contrast ratio etc would sell like crazy

When I first got the DJI setup about 1.5 years ago, I was constantly worried about range and potential failsafes. Fast-forward 1.5 years, and I actually don't even look at the OSD at all anymore. I have yet to failsafe, or even have a single stutter. The range and penetration abilities are outstanding, def no complaints. It's great we finally have this showed correctly though, thanks for sharing.
I am always blown away by the penetration the DJI digital FPV system has! CraZy go0d!
That's the biggest reason why I think HDZero is still light years away from the the image quality DJI gives us.

What settings on your goggles to get great penetration. I seem to get stutters here and there currently running 50mbs and high qual.

@@James-rc4xz I'm at 50mbs, focus mode on (most of the time), low latency mode. I stay away from high quality mode because it adds quite a bit of latency because it's transmitting so much more data. This is probably the cause of your stutters. Also, I've always had good luck with the stock antenna, but currently use some otg pagoda stubbies that help with penetration as well.
JB really appreciate this and I missed it initially. I did try the load back the saved defaults but it messed with the osd and couldn't get it to work so flashed it and then referred back to screen shots taken prior to the flash. VM appreciated
Great video! Thank you. Up to this point, with DJI I have been using the audio "Play Value" function to monitor LQ in my RadioMaster. Did the "discover new sensors" thing and set audio to call out "RQly" and"RFMD" every 4 seconds on "special functions" page.
How did you implement this? I would love to have this functionality for my TX16s using elrs.

What sort of distance have you covered with the DJI system? I have done 2.6 km on stock antennas (both on air unit and goggles) and I have wondered what sort of distance others have achieved

Call to action fullfilled ;) great info, my rssi on DJI copters was never understandable for me, always 30 or so... no I gotta get over my laziness and upgrade to 4.3 ... mitigation for me was audio telemetry used on the radio with 2 steps, copied over from copter to copter easy and works...

I'm with Betaflight, DJI should implement canvas mode. But this is neat!
DJI is not gonna add a whole new complex functionality after the product release if it doesn't drive major sales. Caddx just said they'd talk to DJI, not to implement it. Maaaaaybe Goggles V3 but I doubt it even then. DJI just doesn't work that way.
On the other hand, non-mainstream patches like this are gonna be really annoying. If the patch had a solid toggle to this workaround and didn't stomp on the original craft name, it would be okay to make it mainstream.

But it's wierd if you look at the version on the firmware tab Josh has it looks like he has the same release I have 4.2.11 09-11-21

Got a twitchy motor too. I was in 4.3.1. Went back to flash 4.3.1 and loaded my configuration. Still bad. reflashed ESC and now, in betaflight, the motor doesn't even move. Did you solved it?

It's really frustrating to see this feature implemented for RSSI but skipping SNR. The signal to noise ratio is so much more important than RSSI for quadcopters.
With my dji quads I find it more secure and easier to have the LQ(tracer) warning on my taranis. I fixed it so when my LQ go below 90‰ my transmitter plays the LQ value. Till it's above 90‰ again.... So i can concentrate me fully on my quad movements without looking for LQ warnings in my screen
Im with you, to much to look at in OSD (to be fair i think JB as said this in the past) if you have DJI goggles you not going to have a £40 radio, so just get the radio to tell you ,your not going to miss it then.

@@dalemurray6834 indeed, osd's are nice to have for long range pilots, or info or warnings that can last seconds...but for freestyle,more than often you are to late if your LQ drops way to low, the moment you dive or do a trick you don't look @ your osd... but if the lady in your transmitter says 55% LQ that's instantly you make the correction.... sinds i use this trick, i had never a failsave. and gives you a smile on your face if you hear 85LQ .....83LQ so you have te time to instantly recover without oeps i didn,'t 'see' it coming.
I would actually prefer it set up this way also, do you have link or know how where i can read to set it up on my taranis instead?

Yes exactly, we have to rely on Howels or some other dev to fork it, or we have to figure out ourselves how to do it!

For me, the prerequisite for the loss of the video signal is the bitrate, if the bitrate is noticeably reduced, then it's time to turn back. And since the video connection will still be cut off earlier than the connection with the remote control of the TBS, the bitrate readings are quite enough
you can heve constant 50mbps and crsf caput anyways. if you are in a very noise envoiremetn for 900htz and loose crsf signal way before dji 5.8gh

Thanks for the great video, however, my rssi db is showing a constant 130 and blinking along with blinking constant low rssi db warning. Somehow I thought rssi db value would overwrite craft name but I still have the craft name showing. Hmmm. rssi db value is properly showing up on xmitter screen though.

So basically your getting dbm since you have LQ on aux. Helps long range guys a lot..
I can see with elrs the first number for hz profile might come in handy so you notice you forgot to switch off 500hz if going long range.

Exactly. Personally I find EMUFLIGHT flies better and easier to use the GUI compared to BF plus I just don’t agree with the Devs of BF refuse to use their software.

first of all thx you for all your content. I learned so much from you. Quick question: I follow your video and have one problem. My Tango 2 is fix in 150hz but in the OSD I see something like 1:xxx xx. I thought when I only use the 150hz I will see something like this 2:xxx xx
I also would expect rfmode 2 for 150 Hz.

Hi, weird but it looks like this works only with betaflight_4.3.0_5a7b8cdb0 version marked as 4.3.0-RC2 - 13 Jan 2022. However, in the newest version does not work anymore betaflight_4.3.0_b3b2e5ae7 4.3.0 with AKK / RDQ smartaudio fix -- 04 Jul 2022. Only CRAFT_NAME is displayed. And now the question is which version should I use, which is the BF RC2 development version ?!

I checked the next versions and I already know what to do :)
We download the latest version with the NAME !! 4.3.0 for DJI with LQ & RSSI & warnings - 9fbc07eb1 - this is from 14 Jun 2022 the official version of BF 4.3.0 and we follow the video. If we only see the RSSI DBM inscription, we go to CLI and set the alarm threshold set osd_rssi_dbm_alarm = -102 (for example for the 200Hz version) BF has a default alarm set to -60 rssi dbm which obscures the view of LQ and RSSI - Probably we can also turn off the rssi_dbm alarm in osd but I have not checked it yet. It's already 2 am in Poland;)

I'm not really interested in LQ as I run DJI radio, but definitely might do this to get warnings,......and as my time to switch to 4.3.
Emu and iNav have it build in.
So this isn’t necessarily useful when using DJI radio ? I’m struggling to get any readings. 🤷♂️
@@houseofquad2260 I'll admit, I hadn't really put much thought to it. Just assumed that the link bars in DJI goggles was all you get. But looking at it a little deeper, it seems RSSI is something the TX knows, and you can't get it over the SBUS connection by default. I don't know the technical reasons, these are just my observations. Two ways you normally get RSSI is to configure a channel on the TX to send RSSI, or you have a telemetry connection either by itself or coupled into FPort. Since you can't configure that in the DJI, you don't get RSSI back to the flight controller. In Betaflight, on the first page, you will see RSSI. Until you see a reading there, you will never see it in your goggles via a Betaflight OSD.

This is a function that gets a new display in a current field in the DJI goggles. I don't think it makes any difference what radio you are using. :)

So this new firmware covers both the warning display not available AND LQ/RSSI display? Did I get it right? If yes this would be just awesome, was fearing at the very beginning of the video when you mention it's using craft name to display LQ that I'll need to give up the warnings but it doesn't look so as per the rest of the video
Warnings still work fine. You will need to turn off many of the warnings you don't care about or don't use, because they can potentially display over the new LQ readout. But, others you want will still display, but could cover up LQ while they are displaying.
I have done all the steps multiple times, correct target and firmware, however It just shows the name of the craft. Any suggestion?

for those who only appear aircaft name, just install the latest version with the NAME !! 4.3.0 for DJI with LQ & RSSI & warnings - 9fbc07eb1 - this is from 14 Jun 2022 :)

Thanks Josh !! you are the best !! one thing, when i try to flash firmware, i load locally then said Local loaded firmware and when i hit Flash Firmware on the top left of the screen gives me a Error that said, Port opening Error. Do you have any idea of how to fix that or why that happens ??

For those of you having trouble: Flash the correct bf hex and DO NOT PASTE IN A CUSTOM CRAFT NAME AFTERWARDS cause this will wipe the configured lq/rssi/warning variable

Mine is not working properly. I've removed my craft name and left it blank, but what appears in the OSD is not LQ, but the word "Craft_Name". Tried rebooting but still not showing the LQ. Do I need to reflash with blank craft name?

@@kbsvlog5270 yes reflash and leave it alone. The box where you usually type in your craft name will say something like „rssi low“ or whatever the current warning is
Unfornately, I can't do this upgrade. My FC is a FURYF4OSD and I couldn't see the STM32F7X2 in the target of the Betaflight configurator 10.8.0. I appreciate your help. Thanks

Note, it's advanced git use and you need to compile but you can cherrypick the feature. I'd not recommend it as it's time consuming and potentally more unstable than even a nightly.
I finally get a long range quad with DJI air unit to fly and I now I need another sw update and risk F-ing up my existing settings for this LQ that might not even be accurate? NO THANKS! I'll just let my radio give me a verbal warning if my signal is low, got GPS installed already. I refuse to let this hobby become a part time job with no pay. It's great to learn new knowledge but dang it, I just want to build and FLY!!!
I TOTALLY AGREE! I feel same way. So sick of having to jump through hoops to get things working. I use DJI for Fixedwing as well but just ordered The SIYI FM30 HD system that actually has FULL OSD and it’s 1080p at 30kms. I have zero issues flying with latency over 120ms on fixedwing.
Using my Ghost receiver, I had to re-bind the transmitter with the bind setup to disable the RX LQ and RX RSSI so they're both set to NONE and then set the RSSI Channel to Disabled in BF for the RSSI to work. Otherwise it showed -130 for RSSI (no rssi detected).
i just did it with ghost i didn't have to do that no rebind necessary, did you select all the osd elements JB said, if i missed one it would show static OSD, 100-98 (and working) is the only OSD element i see.
