  • Unique tip to remove clicks, pops, and other noise on a digital recording of a mono vinyl record. If you like this, subscribe, thumbs up and comment! I usually respond.
Note: This is NOT the same as using the "mono" button or a Y adapter. In fact, I recommend you do not use those. Essentially what they do is layer both tracks on top of each other, thereby doubling the amplitude of the mono track in comparison to the noise. This makes removing the noise even more difficult. Instead, my method requires a mono record captured in stereo, so the software can recognize and reduce the noise.
    The reason this works:
Most of the noise picked up by the record player is caused by dust, scratches and cracks on the surface of the record. Imagine a piece of a hair lying on the surface of the record. In my technique, we're using a stereo needle to capture the audio. It's very unlikely that the hair will hit both the left and right side of the needle precisely at the same time; it will probably hit either the left side of the needle, or the right first. This will cause a slight difference in the noise between the left and right channels. While that difference is miniscule to us, to the software that is essentially stereo information. The software removes that stereo information, thereby removing the noise.
This might work for any audio that was - at any point - a mono track, and then converted to stereo. Any new stereo noise might be reduced using this method.

NOTE: This technique only works on MONO records, recorded on a STEREO record player. For a very powerful technique that works for stereo records, please watch this video here: th-cam.com/video/rb5eDBdjxoY/w-d-xo.html

Just 100 subs? WHY?? My 65-year-old recording with only voice (message from overseas soldier for the family) was a mess. Your step 1 fixed about 80% of the issues. The rest of the click and pops were so much easier to clean up. Your video probably saved me hours and provided a better result.

Thank you this worked. I have never used Adobe Premiere or Audition before, and spent half a day working off of an old recording from an LP trying to remove the scratches. This tutorial was just what I needed. Thank you.

Great to hear. Thank you for the comment. Please let me know if you have any other questions about Audition. I plan on making more of these videos so your feedback is welcome.

Life saver! Thank you so much! I had been doing this manually with the eraser tool for months but now it takes 2 minutes

The center channel is an interesting tool, but it had a weird effect. It helped the vocal bit, but took out most of the percussion and drone, giving a strangely hollow kind of sound. Would you have any suggestions/alternate techniques to prevent that?

It sounds like the record was a stereo record. This technique will not work if it was a stereo record, only a mono record and a stereo record player.
In your case, try this technique: th-cam.com/video/rb5eDBdjxoY/w-d-xo.html

    Put 'mono' in the title!

Good idea! I tried, but it makes the title too long for TH-cam and I think everything else needs to be there. Which word do you think I should swap out?

Or you could set your recording channels in Audacity to Mono and record in Mono.

No, that's not the same thing at all. That just blends the two channels together so the noise is less in comparison. It doesn't remove the noise
