Sharpen Lawn Tools Tips on Bench Grinder - Pruner, Shears, Ax

  • Remove a larger amount of material on lawn tools. A grinder wheel is fast ax, shears, pruner on nicks, or you have to restore particularly worn blade. Be aware that the grinding wheel may get the blade so hot that the temper, or hardness, of the steel could be compromised. So if the steel turns a straw color, that’s bad. When using a grinder, have some water nearby to dip the tool blade and dry it off for the next pass.
    Always look at the edge and follow the original bevel.
    On axes and hatchets, not all have the same blade bevel. You must maintain the edge in the exact center of the ax. Do the whole edge to preserve the shape of the blade, not just where there are chips or nicks. And be careful to not burn the edge.
    Filing produces very little heat, so you won’t need to worry about ruining the temper of the blade.
    Don't overheat the tool, and grind a little at a time. Let the metal cool off on its own, or douse in water before grinding more.
    Use a 6-inch or 8-inch wheel. The grinding wheel should remove the chipped metal, but not overheat the tool that ruins the hardness. Try a 60-grit aluminum oxide wheel with a medium hardness rating.

    I like to call it "making sparks dance on the edge of the blade". It describes perfectly what you should be seeing when you do it at the correct angle, and thank you sir, for confirming that I've been doing it the right way.

    agree with other posters, AWESOME simple but logical explanations (the 'shiny' on edge is bad - not obvious to a lot of people, we might think that means its sharp), but not overexplaining, what to look for. subscribed just bc of the clear comments and awesome camera work to show what you meant. thx

    Good video. Good instructions. Does grinder sharpen blades on electric shavers like the Andis T liners ? How much speed does grinder has to have to sharpen tools like lawn mower blades ?

    I can't believe you used the side of a cutting disk to put an edge on something. You should give a warning, someone *will* lose an eye when that disk shatters.

      I teach operatives how to use grinding machines and it is potentially very dangerous to grind on the side of a reinforced cutting off wheel and a grinding wheel should never be used with the guard missing which is the case in this demonstration.

    I'm looking for a bench grinder to sharpen any and all axes, lawnmower blades, electric shaver blades, machetes , etc... which bench grinder is best for the price , wheel size and speeds ?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A bench grinder is too rough, not precision enough, for electric shears. A good grinder has a 3/4” wide x 6” wheel and be sure to get a diamond wheel dresser at the same time. Once the grinding wheel is black w metal and crud from sharpening it ‘burns’ metal rather than sharpening it. I’m not ‘brand conscious’ but I avoid China products, speed is usually not an option.
