As of September 22, 2022, both Amex and Chase launched all-new Marriott Bonvoy credit cards with $250 annual fees.
Here are the main benefits of the two cards, taken from the press release (link above):
    - 6X Marriott Bonvoy Points on purchases at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy
    - 4X Marriott Bonvoy Points on up to $15,000 in combined purchases per year at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets
    - 2X Marriott Bonvoy Points on all other eligible purchases
    - 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points with each qualifying stay
    - Complimentary Gold Elite status
    - A Free Night Award (redemption level at or under 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points) after making $15,000 in purchases per year. Certain hotels have resort fees.
    - 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year toward higher Elite status
You’ll notice that the two credit cards are nearly IDENTICAL, however…
    a. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful is issued by Chase and runs on the Visa network.
    b. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful earns 4X points at supermarkets worldwide, not just within the U.S. (which is the case of the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy issued by Amex).
If you’re a big international traveler, you may find value in the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful due to it being a Visa and its lack of the U.S. restriction on grocery store purchases.
While these 2 new Marriott credit cards may have high price tags ($250/yr. each), at least they do offer complimentary Marriott Gold Elite status simply from having them. Previously, the only way to obtain that was via the old version of the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, which had a $450 annual fee at the time (i.e. prior to 9.22.2022).
That said, for many casual travelers who occasionally stay at Marriott hotels, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card from Chase ($95 annual fee) may be a more compelling card.
Regarding the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card, it also had several updates that were added back in July 2022 as follows:
    - 7% Marriott Bonvoy Room Rate Discount
    - Gold Elite Status, complimentary
    - 4X Points on Global Dining (previously only in the U.S.)
What about the Ritz Carlton Credit Card? Here’s what the press release says:
    - Card members who have The Ritz-Carlton Rewards™ Card from Chase, which is no longer available to new applicants, will receive the new 85K Anniversary Free Night Award. There is no change to The Ritz-Carlton Rewards™ Card annual fee.

Just compare the Bevy/Bountiful to the Amex Gold and the Marriot's own Boundless and you realize these new cards are not very competitive. With the Amex Gold, get the same 4x multipliers, with a higher yearly spending limit and Amex points are worth 2x - 3x what Marriot points are worth. Also, the Boundless, with a $95 annual fee, has a free night with no spending requirement and the same 6x multiplier on Marriot hotel stays, slightly worse multipliers on groceries/dining, but you're getting 3x on gas. The only thing these cards really have going for them over the Boundless is the Gold Elite vs. Silver Elite status, but it honestly isn't a huge difference. If they wanted to make these competitive, they should have had the free night without the spend requirement or made the yearly spend requirement for the first night significantly cheaper like $5k. As a value proposition, I don't know why you would choose these cards over the Boundless or the Brilliant.

I don't think Marriott credit card team is dumb. I'm sure they KNEW people won't like these cards because there's no point getting these cards without a free night certificate or at the very least some sorts of credit that help offset or reduce the ridiculous $250 fee. I think their goal is to lure people into get their top card, the $650 Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant because the benefits on that card are obviously far better.

I don't think you've covered before but can you do a comprehensive review and comparison of the hotel lines of cards, like hyatt vs hilton vs marriott. I know some people recommend getting into all of them but I'd prefer to just stick with one family of hotels for now. My friend has Hyatt so we use his card when doing hyatt, I'm leaning towards either ritz carlton or hilton aspire for myself but I can't really decide. And then I'm finding out that some of the hotel (and airline cards) are not as good when comparing personal vs business, like personal may be better etc.

With the club upgrades, the 50k cert, the lounge access, the gold status, the 300 Airline Credit and all the other benefits. that $250 fee makes no sense. Something else to point out on protections, the Ritz card gives you $10k per claim. That's huge! You can buy jewelry and it would be protected for 120 days.

One thing that I've noticed and I'm not too sure of so maybe you or someone in the comments can help out. You get platinum status off the bat but you also get 25 nights added each year...... so does that mean after 1 year you are upgraded to titanium? OR....... if you hold the card for 3 years are you titanium? I'd love for someone to clear this up for me. Thanks in advance!

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. The automatic Platinum status via the Bonvoy Brilliant card is not issued via elite night credits. In other words, you get Titanium 'unlocked' but with 0 nights. To achieve Titanium, you'd have to earn 75 nights.
      2. The next benefit of 25 elite night credits then puts you at "Platinum w/ 25 nights." So then to achieve Titanium, you'd have to earn an additional 50 nights.
      3. The elite night credits do not roll over. Each year you start back at 0.

If I were an AMEX Platinum card holder with automatic Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy and I decided to get a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card that gives an automatic Silver Elite Status, would Marriott Bonvoy downgrade my status or continue to honor my AMEX Platinum Card membership with Gold Elite status? Missed opportunity here. The business card gives Gold status at $99. The Boundless helps you reach status based on spend for elite nights credit. These new cards had to offer something else plus a free night. Hyatt Biz card fails because of no free night. Not really hard to figure that a free night is essential to a hotel card.
I'll say it again: the Ritz card is now the best value for a high end Marriott card. Brilliant card devalues Platinum status by allowing you to buy it and breaks up the $300 credit in that annoying Amex fashion. All for a higher AF. No thanks.
