    LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3
Tie two or three colored ribbons of different lengths around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it.
Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the turnstile...
Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long. Cut the ends at 45 degrees then seal the end with one drop of Super Glue to prevent fraying. If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/2” or so, they will all show up no matter how they drape.
Tie the 3 ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. It is too short to catch on anything.
You can see this ribbon from 40 feet away. Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case. This way, it won’t slide around. This knot does not loosen.
Put your phone number on one ribbon using a permanent Sharpie.
    Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique.
Stand by the output hole port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing the piece.
Tie your skiies, duffel bag, and what ever with matching ribbons-even your computer case.
If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.
    Pleasant color combinations:
    Red and blue
    Chartreuse and purple
    Orange and light blue
    Orange and yellow
    Gray and pink
    Green and yellow
    Red and Green
    Red and Gold
    Light blue and light green
The third ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan
Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like”.
Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape.

I'm opting for dresses and not a lot of shorts/tops as they will weigh less and not take up so much space. And yes, I've had my 'personal item' weigh about the same as my carry-on. No one is the wiser! Great tips. Thanks you.

In Asia, budget airlines restrict us to only one hand carry bag weighing not more than 7KG... and they DO pounce on unsuspecting travelers at the gates to enforce the weight limit, frequently resulting in these poor fellows having to pay exorbitant excess weight fees... which would have been enough to check in the items in a luggage!

one other thing. in europe there are some cheap airlines. they sell cheap tickets and have a weight restriction to 12 kg. on there website it states, that this is for carry on plus the personal item together. so you can't cheat there. but worse than that, a friend of mine, who once as student traveled with them, told me, she had a jacket or a coat on. at the check in, they told her, she has to take off that jacket or coat and they have to weight that as well (it was warm, where she started but wanted to get to a colder destination, so they knew, it wasn't because she was freezing right there). of course then they charged her for 1 kg overweight. she said, she found that so upsetting, that she never ever flight with them again or any of those airlines, that work about the same. traditional or bigger airlines have good deals as well and most of the time, are more generous with the weight and what you bring with you. esp. with the personal item

Sometimes low cost companies double check... when you check in and right before you are about to board your flight. So at the gate they can still decide if you need to check in your luggage. Yes you might find it mean but that's how the low cost companies get their extra money so they can offer those flights cheaper. And I had my backpack checked on it's weight once which wasn't a problem because it was within the limits.

If you're on a budget airline in Europe, the tips about your "personal" bag or handbag simply won't work. Here, you are allowed a single carry-on item. If you have a handbag, that counts as your single carry-on item and you will be made to check your carry-on luggage (and pay premium for it). I sometimes see people trying to come through with a carry-on plus handbag plus plastic bag(s) from duty free and they always get really angry that they have to check the carry-on and repack so that the duty-free bags are no longer separate. The number of bags are definitely checked at the gate as well as at security and the weight can be checked there too, so the tip about repacking in the toilets may also lead to tears.

    • @catherineallen6024
      @catherineallen6024 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Always check the baggage limits for the airline before booking with them. Don't assume that because you've always travelled with a handbag, that you'll be able to do that everywhere still.

@@catherineallen6024 And check dimensions on baggage allowed. Not all carry on for US carriers will be allowed in European budget carriers. 15 lbs is the smallest I have heard your luggage must weigh. So check the weight of luggage empty first.

I already pack as minimally as I can, but I'm so glad I never have to deal with carry-on weight restrictions - as it is, for a 3-week warm weather trip (spring-summer-early fall), I'm already going to be traveling with 70-90 pounds of stuff because I've got a 40lb wheelchair, but they can never leave it behind because it's medical equipment (as is one of my 3 carry-on bags). My small carry-on suitcase is usually 25-30lb (I will never check it because baggage handlers already broke one of my other suitcases), and my backpack can vary significantly from sort of light to very heavy. I've never flown a budget airline and probably never will.
What I'm curious to find out is whether budget airlines that operate entirely outside of the U.S. allow service dogs on board - are they still considered medical equipment (and thus exempt from any weight restrictions), or are they counted against the allowed weight?

  • @crash3x
    @crash3x 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

Here is a thought. Have you ever stop to think that weight and size restriction is there not to make you complain , or to just pick on you the passenger, but has to do with the safety in operating the aircraft. If everyone lies, smuggles and tries to cheat the system by making the aircraft heavier than it is regulated....when something goes wrong or your loved one goes down in a blaze of glory ...whose fault is it .....really is it worth the risk over paying what $50 ...so you can cheat the system.

    • @curlsavenue1035

No. 1 tip should be to use a max size back pack instead of a wheeled suitcase
That saves a couple of kilos vs a wheeled bag, plus they don’t look or check the bag on your back at check on
Mine fully loaded can weigh 12 kg, never been checked
Patagonia MLC - max legal carry on, amazing piece of kit with lots of clever touches
When I become too weak to carry it I may just buy one of those fold up luggage ‘trollies’, converting it into a wheeled case
2nd tip is to only take half the clothes that you need and wash them on vacation in the middle, have always managed to get cheap rate and never lost anything
3rd tip is to use lightweight compression packing bags

great advice. I almost ( I didnt; but it scared the snot out of me) lost my bag going through Mexico City Airport a TOTAL DUMPSTER FIRE PLACE. I am going to use some of your ideas. I am also carrying a mesh bag. I find that when you go through the machines that make you put your hands over your head, if you're wearing a lot of clothes it will cause problems with the TSA people. So personally I'm going to carry a little mesh laundry bag; go INTO the toilet. take off all my extra clothes put them in the bag then cram them under the seat with my back pack. Its sad that the airlines are making people resort to these measures but they have now. Besides saving money you have the peace of mind of knowing your clothes are in YOUR care . My Mexico City luggage fiasco changed my attitude forever.

Great tips. We travel the country fulltime in our RV. But the few times we do fly I do most of these things. Thanks 4 sharing.😎

Kushatha K Most people do and the engineering of the plane is designed to cope. If it wasn’t then there would be a huge increase in crashes

You are allowed to pay for extra baggage allowance for a bag which will be carried on the same airplane. We are not packing gravels or rocks( I hope). How dangerous can it be?

I'm sorry, but these tips are awful. I'm always travelling light, but I think it's much more comfortable to check your bag and take only a small carry-on with what you really need for your flight.

    • @debraladams9140

With tight connections or delays, it's best to have your luggage with you at all times. I was once put off a plane in Toronto during a snow storm with checked luggage, along with 15 other planes -- then told to go into a room the size of a football field, find my luggage and have it with me to find a different flight once the airport opened. This was the last time I checked a bag. What a nightmare. Carry-on is the only way I fly.

    • @rykellim
      @rykellim 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

NOT true. The check-in fee can cost nearly as much as the flight ticket itself, particularly for budget airlines in Asia, AND we do not always need to carry 27KG worth of stuff for a trip.

Can't afford the price to check a bag, and just not worth it if you have any layovers at all. It also saves time all around - no waiting an hour and a half in the check-in line (I have to do that anyway, but for a different reason), less that has to go through security (they do screen checked bags as well as carry-on, and will open them for a bag search, if needed), and no waiting for an hour at the baggage claim for them to finally get it sent down. Less to have to haul to and from the airport and at your destination (if you have to walk, or if there aren't elevators or escalators). Lighter bags = less strain = less regret for bringing so much stuff, and if in Europe, less chance you'll stick out like a sore thumb as "American". And I'm definitely thankful for no weight limits on carry-on within and to and from the U.S., at least on most airlines - when I fly, I have to bring 3 bags onto the plane with me because 1) the third one can't be charged for or required to be checked because it's medical equipment (policy varies by airline, but the ones I fly allow it) and 2) I will not risk my suitcase getting broken by careless baggage handlers (they broke the wheels on one, and we had to drag it about a quarter mile over pavement, and it was heavy - that was before I learned how to pack minimally, but the point remains) - the one I use is the only carry-on size suitcase I own, and they're not cheap. Unless I have absolutely no other choice (e.g. inadvertently booking a Basic Economy ticket instead of regular Economy one - only made that mistake once, and now I double check before booking - or I'm forced to fly rather than drive in the winter, and hence have heavy winter clothes in tow (that only ever happened twice)), I will never check a bag again - it's just not worth it. And I can pack for 3 weeks in my rather small carry-on suitcase, my school backpack, and a small bag for medical stuff - it can easily be a combined total of 50lb (I do pack as minimally as I can), but having it all with me sure beats having almost none of it, and I don't have to carry anything if I don't want to - it all fits on my wheelchair, and the weight doesn't really matter because I don't have to push myself through the airport (I can't, anyway).

You can put coins in your pocket you just have to empty your pocket when going through security scanning. After, you can pout them back in your pocket or bag

I actually enjoyed these tips because I've done quite a few myself...wearing layers and heavy clothes (2 shirts, a sweater under a fleece and leggings under jeans, putting things in my pockets, even down to walking with an empty water bottle all the way to my destination because I literally had no more space.
