  • The outside step wrestling takedown is not new - especially internationally in freestyle wrestling. This slick single leg takedown shot has been a ton in freestyle, but we are now starting to see it more and more in NCAA Wrestling.
Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State Wrestling uses the shot both on the international scene and in his college wrestling matches as a quick leg attack to score takedowns.
Mitchell is a technical wizard so don't forget to check out more of his content on Ocean today!

Note: Sidakov is a right leg lead and, when in overtie, switches his feet just before hitting this to his left side (e.g. Dake match). From the space he takes his right leg back to “skip” off of it (e.g. Burroughs match). Chamizo is a left leg lead and keeps his left leg forward and hits it to his left side (technically a righty attack) similar to how Mitch is a right leg lead and hits it to his right side (technically a lefty attack). I think the reason they do this awkward skip step is to get a powerful push off the back leg so that they get can a deep knee slide to get their hips in which I believe is the most important aspect and really needs to be emphasized, otherwise people will think it’s just a regular outside step, which it’s not. Then there’s the arm swim which, aside from the functionality, makes it look super cool. That said, I’m not convinced Sidakov “pops” the elbow. It looks like more of a slap to elicit a tiny reaction to get the opponent to slightly bring his elbow back which allows for the opening. Finally it’s not a new move; The Soviets and Mongolians were hitting it 40 years ago. My 2 ¢.
    Good stuff 💪

yes they known old moves but US does important thing - they systematizing all these information - they teaching it - giving them names - wirting it.
For example in russia one action like slide-by may have 3 -4 different names - teachers teaches them without systematizing like today in US

im a jiujitsu guy who loves wrestling, but ive been doing this move a few years, it came about because i first got into combat stuff training boxing/muay thai. I naturally use to do everything in both stances while switching unknowingly, Then i picked up switch stance from watching TJ Dillishaw fighting. Then when i was training jiujitsu i'd use it to get in on the legs.
