The series is loosely based on Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir 'Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Root' and follows the story of Esty. Esty is a young ultra-Orthodox Jewish girl in Brooklyn, New York, who feels suffocated in her tightly-knit community (and her marriage) so leaves to start a new life in Berlin, Germany.
We spoke to Shira Haas about the series, shaving her head and her friendships with her co-stars.

Yankee as a character was also so interesting... he was just as lost as her. Probably more as he was just following what was expected from him without asking himself what he really wants or what made sense for both of them. Esty had a strength and courage he didn’t ...

If you like her, you should watch Shtisel . She plays in it as well. It's in Hebrew but they have English subtitles !
I saw her on "Shtisel" on Netflix and she was so brilliant and breathtaking, but in Unorthodox, wow, no words!! Oscar, EMMY, all!!

Shtisel is fantastic. Much more nuanced and a more realistic and humane depiction ultra orthodox communities. But Shira Haas is fantastic in both.

I binge-watched from South-Africa. Then watched Shtisel straight after, Shira is such a talented thespian. love her.
Ms. Haas is becoming one of my favorite actors. She gave another amazing performance in Shtisel. She was much younger then but her depth in performance was that of a much seasoned actor. The actors of both these casts were absolutely memorizing.

I binged watched the series twice and plan to watch it again. It's one of the most captivating things I've watched in the longest of time. As a sociology major, there are so many topics that can be covered about this brilliant series! What's beautiful is that there are aspects of the story that can resonate with anyone. To say that Shira was great in the series would be an understatement.
She was SO GOOD in both Unorthodox and Shtisel! She is an amazing actress! She brings so much depth to the characters that she portrayed
I am in awe of her brilliance... I saw her first on Unorthodox, then I saw she was in another show called Shtisel on Netflix and I binged 3 seasons in a week! I can’t wait to see what’s to come for her... I see huge things for her in Hollywood in very big films.

Ugh I just love her - and her acting in Unorthodox was just amazing! I hope to see her in more and more shows/films.
I am an academic and practising psychologist from the US. I was president of two,womens shelters in the USA during my career as aprofessor and university administrator. AS community,service on behalf of my university I was a volunteer and donated my psychological counseling services to the director, the staff and to women and their children in our shelters. I raised funds, was president of the board both places, all unpaid , bec I wanted to help women transition to independent lives when they were traumatized. Your acting and the script captured so well how such women make their transition from depression, fear, often low self esteem and anxiety etc to a better and more healed life.
My best friend in my teen years was a Conservative Jewish girl from a Russian American Jewish household. I loved her and her all female family ...her grandmother who,spoke no English, only Yiddish, her mother who was divorced and my friend and her sister. They kept a Kosher kitchen and meals....so I learned all that, about sitting Shiva when someone dies. I had meals with them, Passover etcand learned. all sorts of customs including how to make matzo ball soup,which I still ma,e to this day ...they all were warm, kind, loving women. I grew up in a neighborhood and attended school with Conservative and Reform Jews and developed a very deep respect for the people I knew personally ...all good students, serious about moral behavior and the first boy I dated was Reform Jewish. His family celebrated Hannukah and Christmas both as several of our neighbors did. I knew some of these Orthdodox customs from reading but never knew any Orthodox Jews. Thank you for your artful,authentic portrayal of a young woman trying to come into adulthood and her maturity struggling against all odds to unfold the very best in herself.
I have known so,MANY young women in such situations from many countries, cultures, and subcultures, even Fundamental Christian ones who,have braved such transitions. It was an honor to be of service to, them and wherever they now are, I hope they are happy in their lives. Something i find tremendously interesting about Shira's performances is how she can convey such vast amount of emotion and intent with minimal facial expression, i can't remember the last time i saw an actor/actress with such immense raw talent

What a powerful impact she made with the audition, dredging up this song sung by men at her wedding, but obviously so deeply felt and now she takes ownership of the song. This song became hers. The series ends, but you have to think the committee was blown away, as were her friends.
She was phenomenal in Unorthodox! Her eyes were so expressive, conveying so much without a need for any words. I was gripped throughout. I look forward to seeing her in more things in the future!

This movie/series was such a beautiful surprise. Even though the story is difficult, it wasn’t necessarily negative. The acting, writing, directing etc was amazing. I didn’t want it to end. This deserves every award possible!
The performance by Shira Haas was so memorable and powerful that one just cannot forget this story. I was in tears and had to watch the fourth episode twice. Please bring Shira Haas back. She deserves the highest award for her acting ability.

I literally cried when watching some scenes. I relate so much to Etsy's life in the story even though I have a different background and culture as hers.

I did watch Netflix's Unorthodox teachings that got me upset to realize how much you were pushed and demanded to be a silent quiet victim but you were able to acquire your freedom and to be who you are through your struggle. That made me happy to learn this. Thank you for your performance that you gave to shed light on a method of wrongdoing to all women of the sector of the Jewish Faith.

Literally as soon as i finished it I found myself researching the religion and watching videos about it...I found that so many people apart of the Orthodox Jewish communities were kind of offended/taken aback at the series. But as someone outside the religion, that I didn't know much about...I saw it as Esther's view on her community and the people involved not necessarily the religion its self.
Even Esther's mother pointed out that the community never came to help her when she was going through problems.
I am Jewish and I am not offended because this is the story of one woman in a fringe community not all orthodox women

The first time I saw Shira Haas performance in the Israeli production of Shitsel, I was deeply impressed and moved by her portrayal of a young girl in a Hasidic community in Israel.
Shira's heartfelt performance in Unorthodox was equally impressive! She is an amazing young actress that brings a profound power to her roles and understands the universal human condition that we all experience as we take our journey in this life!

Just finished Unorthodox and found it absolutely fascinating. One thing I wish she would have talked about more is if Hebrew, her native language is similar to Yiddish at all and what her biggest difficulties were learning it for this role.
