I feel like Linda's parents were kinda neglectful and cold towards Gayle and her, always seeming displeased whenever Linda and her family are around, and at the end of the episode where we meet Lin's parents and they kiss and Linda says "They haven't kissed like that years" I think her parents seemingly broken marriage might have made them be neglectful to Lin and Gayle as children causing Linda to have to pick up the pieces and help raise Gayle the best she could. Even if that meant letting Gayle feel like she was dating her boyfriend or losing a contest her and Gayle were in so she didn't hurt her feelings. And alot of the things Linda did were to protect Gayle, which I feel like has carried over into their adult lives.
Also their parents lied to them a lot but unlike Gayle Linda saw through them ( you rarely see Linda lie to her kids almost like she can’t keep secrets from them)

Her parents depend on her for everything mundane, her sister depends on her for everything significant, and Hugo depended on her for validation and vindication. Meanwhile, Bob was someone she could depend /on/. He has a level head, despite his eccentricities. And although he clearly likes her a great deal, he also had his dream of running an artistic burger bistro. He welcomed her, but didn't need her. And while everyone she knew till then took and took and took, Bob gave the world his art, and has shown throughout the series to have a generous streak when it comes to favors and adventures.
I hated Gayle in the Dr. Yap episode, I hate the episode as a whole tbh, but now I adore her. I'm so happy they didn't keep her weird crush on Bob and that she's actually pretty endearing, funny and a good sister/aunt despite her own problems. Her best moment probably has to be during the episode Louise needs to go to the dentist. She's a good example of an annoying character who's annoying to other characters but not to viewers of the show.
I just realized that they have a very similar relationship that the fischoeder brothers do... Both Felix and Gayle are completely dependent on Calvin and Linda respectively and both Calvin and Linda enable and Coddle their younger siblings. Also all of them resent but also love their sibling. I mean Gayle has never stabbed out linda's eye out , dropped chandeliers on her, or tried to kill her, like Felix has done to Calvin... (they have a weird almost trauma bonded relationship where no matter how horribly Calvin is abused by his little brother he continues to enable and coddle him, it can even be interpreted in a way where Calvin is constantly keeping his brother appeased because he is legitimately afraid of what happens to him when Felix doesn't get his way. I mean Calvin can be mean towards Felix too, but not nearly as bad as Felix can be to him, and it is often at least somewhat justified.) Calvin is an interesting character because the more you learn about his past and the more of his family members that you see you go from thinking of him as this mean narcissistic jerk, to feeling kind of sorry for him and being amazed that he somehow became as well-adjusted as he did. (which is not very but just the fact that he is able to function on a daily basis is a miracle consididering the things that you can only assume happened to him) He is the only Fischoeder we have seen so far that if he went to therapy there would even be a chance that he could improve.
Loosing a brother or sister is so sad, it’s like you lose a part of yourself, you fight and love but when their gone it leaves a emptiness that you can never fill.
I can tell you're speaking from experience and I'm really sorry about that. I have a sister a little over a decade younger than me and I would be devastated if anything bad happened to her. Not just because she's only 7 right now so she's got a long life left

I don’t think that anything happened to Gayle. Gayle was just born that way, I don’t have any personal experience but I would assume that she’s in the autism spectrum. Linda takes care of her sister and grew up with Gayle different views, that’s why she has more patience.

Ive watched this show an unhealthy amount of times and heres how i perceive Linda and Gayles relationship Linda and Gayles parents didn’t know how to be parents, especially to Gayle. They have no idea what Gayle is actually like, Gayle lies to her parents about her life and they don’t seem to question it. Linda even backs Gayle up on these lies because Linda is protective of Gayle and doesn’t want to hurt her feelings, like in art crawl. And i think linda gets this enabling behaviour from her parents. Their parents lied to Gayle about her goldfish dying rather than just tell her that her goldfish died and help her through her weird fish greif but the difference is their parents enabled Gayles behaviour because they were too lazy and possibly didn’t even care enough to want to help Gayle. Whereas Linda does it out of love and support. Linda definitely enables Gayles crazy behaviour too much but Im glad she does. Their parents were lazy parents.(the case of the unbuilt treehouse) And because of this Linda stepped up and starting mothering her own sister. That would explain why Gayle is so dependant on Linda and why Linda is so independent and such a good mother.
FYI a lot of autistic people don’t go to therapy simply because there aren’t any good options available to them. Most therapists are ableist, and will focus more on masking than helping with meltdowns and anxiety.
