that’s a bold statement to make, because as boring as england is, they have been defensively solid so far, and won’t have a problem seeing the game out. i can see the game going to a penalty shootout, and admittedly, england do have some good penalty takers.

Because Bellingham is horrific. Have you seen the guy's 1st touch? It's like a trampoline. Don't let the stats fool you into thinking he's decent. He does more or less the same thing that Bruno Fernandes does, only Bruno is arguably better. Scores better goals and can pick a pass sometimes. Bellingham is just a box-crasher. Building the midfield around a limited NFL player like Bellingham has been England's downfall

Had an easy group so you expect teams to park the bus so current formation didn’t work. Never had enough guys in their third. So change formation Southgate. Back 3 and use 2 wingbacks to help midfield. Own the overlap and stuff the box and ffs someone play the ball to Kane’s feet.
Foden had blinding season central not on left. If Kane can’t press anymore use him as super sub. Palmer will press all night long. Mainoo will run at them 24/7.

It's absolutely insane how all of the comments from commentators have been about the most basic of basics in the sport. That England need to break down defensive lines, be better on the ball, make runs in behind, get comfortable on the press. Everything that, as ostensibly world class players, they should be able to do. And they can't.
It's a miracle that we got out of the group. Serbia could've been a 1-1 draw. We could've easily lost to Slovenia. Against Denmark we were walking on eggshells. This could've been a 1 point group. That we won, and somehow, against all odds, managed to draw another lower quality team, means we have one last chance to solidify a plan. If it somehow starts working from here and we make a deep tournament run now, it'll be absolutely baffling.
Guehi is inspired. Pickford has been stepping up like he always does. Walker has been good. Bellingham and Rice have been quality. Saka has largely done what he needs to do. But everyone else is massively and dangerously underperforming, or at least not tactically steady in this current team.
The lack of physical presence of Trippier and Foden means switching to that flank is impossible to do quickly, so Bellingham has to drift to that side and steal Foden's thunder, which means he's rarely in the place England need him to be on the rare occasion that crosses actually come in. Not out of lack of reading the game, but out of tactical necessity.
When England added Mainoo onto the pitch at 70 od minutes, he was getting into those positions required but on the right. When Gordon came on at 85 od mins, he made those runs that made full backs have to step back and allow space between the lines, rather than know they could press higher because foden and trippier would always pass it back rather than take their man on or make over/underlapping runs (the only time they did that all game, in fact, Foden assisted Saka for an offside goal, lol).
This isn't with out its downsides, however. Mainoo could be a defensive liability if he's always between the midfield and defensive lines. Gordon is a less technically sound creator than Foden, who would undoubtedly work better cutting inside once Shaw returns to pressure full backs and win Foden space. But getting 6 or 7 world class players to work together is better than having 11 who can't string together a pass.
This was the game to try another way, and Gordon doesn't come on until the 90th minute. If him and Cole Palmer don't start the next game, it's over
