I picked up Go in my retirement and just made it to single digit kyu before getting overly frustrated at my repeated losses and putting the board aside. But I still do L&D problems almost daily on my phone. Your GoMagic videos are great and after 18mo away, I can feel I'm getting pulled back into the Go vortex!! ;-)
That's great. You've picked up Go in your retirement and made it to single-digit kyu. Wow, that's an impressive achievement! Taking a break can be a great way to reset and come back with fresh energy and perspective. So... Welcome back to the Go vortex! 😊
I must say, these Go-videos (I watched a few others as well) are exactly what I was looking for: In-Depths analysis of practical Go-plays, curated and performed really well. This hits the mark for me. Thank you.
I wish this delved a little deeper into direction of play. I've watched many game reviews that will criticize a move as the "wrong direction" but my kyu brain cannot understand what exactly that means - particularly on a crowded board.
Actually, Matthew often discusses the direction of play in this course because Kajiwara Takeo is a renowned master of it. Check it here: gomagic.org/courses/kajiwara-takeo/
This is very interesting but for the 3rd example when Matthew is talking about keeping initiative/flow, Sanrensei seems perfectly playable no? Just a stylistic preference on his part? or is the difference that Sanrensei is more effective against a 2 star opening than against 4-4 and komoku ?
Random question, but is this how you are supposed to place the board? Looks like he is sitting on the long side I've been wondering which side i should face the long or short side.

@@GoMagic fantastic - thanks!
This was a wonderful lesson that also applies to not just Go but life 😉
Just like many other things from Go.

I assume it's personal preference 😊
board is still horizontal prepare for the comments
It depends on how you look at it. 🤣
I know it doesn't matter too much, but that was my instant first reaction.
Where do ya'll buy a good but affordable go set?
Marketplaces are the only choice, I guess.

Unfortunately, something went wrong with this course. Some malevolent forces (and it wasn't Matthew!) set goban the wrong way.
@@GoMagic no worries thank you for letting me know.
GO opening looks like esoteric theory
Not always =)
