    I don't share your view how unrealistic is for Frieren not being famous. 80 years have passed after all. For example no one knows who is Bernard Law Montgomery and he was pivotal in WW2 fights in Africa. Only the people who are interested in such topic might know.

    About people forgetting Frieren... That's why Kraft is here. He has a statue with some guy, no body remember what they did, he even asks Frieren, another elf, is she knows him... she doesn't.
    Kraft is here to remind us that statues means nothing in the long run, time erodes everything!

    Frieren already mentioned it way back when they found out they needed a first class mage. The association that governs magic CHANGES too frequently. This association has only been around for 50 years. So yeah they have no records of her because she literally have never part of this specific organixation.

      Yes. Also people tend to forget that this is medieval era set- up - no internet, no convenience transport or ways of sharing info. Remember that Frieren did not take the shadow dragon horn using DHL but a bird in ep.1.

    7:30 this is why the show showed us in previous episodes about the "forgotten heroes", about Flamme who was this legendary mage but in the present she's treated more of a myth, and the statue of himmel not getting taken care of by the younger generation only the old lady still cares about the statue. We can also draw a bit of parallel IRL, e.g. a very huge and popular meme now, in the next generation no one will know about it except maybe for a few. A lot can change in just 80years especially for humans.

    It's not weird at all that people didn't know who Frieren was. They only knew there was an elven mage in the Himmel's party, most didn't know her name. Girl got like one statue with the party in the capital and had been pretty much living in the jungle for all these years! lol

      one statue... that we've seen so far. But elves seem rare enough that it'd be easy to see people assuming she either is or knows the only elf they've heard of. (like the "all brits know the queen personally" joke)

    Remember that frieren is popular to older mages but she's not active to be known to current mages. Remember that few episodes ago when they go to town where there is a statue of her they didn't even recognize her, the merchant even asked that she looked identical to the statue lol. More so here where she doesn't have a statue. Also everyone knows who frieren of the heroes party but not know what she looked liked. Everyone forgets, here's an example. except for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin I don't think people in the streets could name and identify the remaining crew of Apollo 11.

    I think it’s partially because the test is only once every three years Lawine and Kanne are giving it a shot. They seem like they’re fresh out of school and don’t want to have to wait. But as we’ll see, neither of them is probably actually ready to be a first class mage.

    • @Moxie326
      @Moxie326 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah, It's likely that there hasnt been a 2nd-class mage test between their graduation and the 1st class test. We don't know much about 2nd class mage tests, but IMO they'd probably pass, especially after their experience in the 1st class test.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're not quite fresh out of school otherwise they'd probably be fifth class mages but yeah, the exam is certainly not for the cream of the crop or anything, it's for any vaguely competent mage that manage to go beyond apprentice. The cream of the crop are the ones who *pass* the exam, not the one who take it.

    • @Moxie326
      @Moxie326 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Arkayjiya You're working under a false assumption there. It's unclear exactly when people are supposed to graduate magic school, and being in magic school (as far as we know) doesn't prevent you from taking certification tests. Given that Fern got her 3rd class mage certification at the age of 15 or 16, being the youngest ever to score perfectly in it. This means that Kanne and Lawine (as they're both young promising mages, who by the time they take part of the test seem capable of fighting 2nd class mages under certain conditions) would probably gotten their 3rd class certifications shortly after this, aged somewhere between 16 - 18, likely before they graduated, or shortly after.
      I do think they are likely to have only recently become 3rd class mages though, as the previous 2nd class mage exam was 2 years before this 1st class exam, and as far as we know neither of them participated in that, meaning at that time they probably weren't 3rd class mages and were focused on becoming 3rd class rather than 2nd class.

    you know how "time flys" when you enjoy something and other hand "1 minute feels like an hour" when you dont enjoy something... Frieren meeting Voll for a week - blink of an eye... Frieren searching for Himmels flower - sinx months in the blink of an eye... the time she spends with the others when they stay for weeks or months in one place like with Kraft - months in the blink of an eye... on the other hand... fighting demons - multiple episodes... exam - multiple episodes.... think about that and how the show is portrait ❤

    Unrealistic? Maybe, but it's consistent to the story. One, she never took any certification. Her only proof of being a mage is something not even Himmel, Heiter, or even the probably two hundred year old Eisen even recognized. And two, while you can say she's a elf mage hero, but no one recognizes here except a select few. She has statutes everywhere, yet so far, no one in the northern realm recognizes her by face. Two cities that she saved, one put her in jail, and one seemingly didn't have a clue even when she named herself.
    Third, there might actually be a reason why she isn't in any record from the continental mage association. But I won't spoil it.

    Frieren lowkey shitting on modern magic by telling Fern that ordinary magic is all she needs to defeat mages of this era. And we know that Frieren doesn't shit talk for the sake of it, so that's her honest assessment.
    There will be obviously exception, but this tells us that the "quality" of mages decreased in the last century or so, probably because in an era of peace there isn't a strong push to become the best fighter you can be.

    • @evlezzz
      @evlezzz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not about quality, it's a strategy. With Fern's qualities (insane level of speed and control), she fights best with a single simple spell, enchancing her repertoir wound not improve the result. Past mages might have had different meta where that strategy is less effective.

    • @max.s5202
      @max.s5202 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think it's rather that Frieren finds Fern very talented in this specific kind of strategy, and believes that while using it Fern will win.

  • @Moxie326
    @Moxie326 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I definitely disagree about how 'unrealistic' you think it is that barely anyone recognises Frieren. The story is set in a time period roughly equivalent to the 1400s CE (Based off of the architecture and the armour). Frieren basically sat on her ass for 900 years between Flamme's Death and Himmel recruiting her, during which she would've done nothing to gain any fame. She was not the leader of her party either, and the party was not the first party of adventurers sent to destroy the demon king (Himmel mentions that they were only given 10 copper coins by the Human King because of how many parties were sent), and likely they only gained fame as they got close to Ende, and after they killed the Demon King.
    After this, Frieren seems to go back to not doing much, besides talking to a few academics about reworking Zoltraak, likely before the establishment of the Magic Association 50 years ago, as none of the proctors seem to know her.
    The only thing that Frieren is known for is being part of the party that defeated the Demon King, but even there she is overshadowed by Himmel (and likely Heiter, who ended up becoming a bishop) in human society. There only seems to be one statue of her, and that's in the capital, so people outside of the capital are likely unfamiliar with what she looks like. Even when she tells people her name, humans probably have no idea about elven naming conventions, for all they know Frieren could be a really common name for elves, like how John, Mary, Paul, etc. are for humans.

    Oniisan is not old!! Things lost in translation!
    80 Years. Think of it happening around WW2 without modern Media. Travel is slow. Also most of the statues are from Himmel so few would recognise Frieren.
    The Mage Organisation was created around 50 years ago. It's like the university where your grandparents graduated... also Frieren still has the habit of hiding herself. (The other hiding, not the ranger/thief-type, in this she is rather bad)

    Stark is my favorite character but Übel is my 2nd favorite. A lot of her dialogue has some strangely coded indicators that make her a fascinating psych study, I'm not sure how to articulate it but there's a lot of nuance in her writing that suggests more than the waifu bait on the surface. Übel really stands out to me in the show because she's so antithetical to the "vibe", it reminds me of the Naruto chuunin exams when Gaara first showed up

    Great reaction and George retreating into his norminess and Graham embraces it. Shamed you didn't included the registration scene. We'll see how observant you guys are. Kanna and Lawvine are a bit more of a trope but they're fun. As for Ubel... Hey, it was good to see Kraft! A lot of spells that Frieren collects are simple folk magic. A little more worldbuilding as we see how much ordinary magic can take on fancy new magic. It's like Frieren and Fern being able to use a caculator to beat kids nowadays that use smartphones.

    About the need for maturity to take a certification exam like this, in anime it just seems to be a given that actual children are regularly involved in these sorts of life or death activities. It's just one of those tropes that you learn to ignore or accept or else you're going to lose the suspension of disbelief needed to enjoy a show.

    Frieren had no problem being considered an "older woman" but being called an "old mage" is different. Being "older" is fine, but being "old" is not.
    Frieren not being recognized for just being Frieren might seem surprising, but honestly, none of these people have probably ever seen an elf before her, and they probably have no idea how old elves live. They might have even grown up hearing about Frieren and the rest of her party, but believing them to be fairy tales, if they even studied history at all. Still, it seems like a place such as the magical association would know about Frieren's existence, even if it's only been around for 50 years. It is indeed a little strange.
    It was slow like this one other time. When they were going against the demon peace envoys and Aura. Sometimes a story is too complicated to get through it quickly.

      There's nothing really special about why she wasn't recognized by the mages association. She F'd off into the forest for 80 years after saving the world, she never bothered to join any mages association, the person at the front desk signing people up for an exam didn't have a sticky note saying "watch out for this name". Frieren is known by contemporaries for helping with research on zoltraak but otherwise she's an eccentric elf who wanders into the woods for a hundred years and pops up occasionally to buy ramen and F back off into the woods

    Records of what, exactly? She hasn't taken ANY certification... EVER! All she ever had, seems to be an antique necklace that is probably more than 500 years old (since that was the last time she fought anything, before meeting the party).
    Not only that, but people have NEVER heard about her before joining Himmel's party and her mana looks like it is only enough to seem like a normal experienced old mage! They probably thought she got carried by the other party members at the time.
    Given her personality, she was probably the least known of the party members... nobody even has any clue of what she can do. She probably only ever did what she absolutely had to, in regards to statues and such... the bare minimum! She didn't give interviews to TIME magazine, she didn't get her picture on the front page, and she left the day after they came home.
    Not to mention that she has kept almost completely off the radar for 80 years after.

  • @Arkayjiya
    @Arkayjiya 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You're overestimating how important Frieren was considered to be. No one had ever heard of her before the Hero's party despite her being a mage, and she lived in the shadows of Himmel of course (he's the only one who's called a hero), but also Heiter, a religious figure of great authority. To most people those two (who coincidentally are the human ones, which probably served to inflate their importance even more through good all chauvinism/speciesm) are the reason the Hero's party won.
    On top of that, anyone who's met her since then beside those four and who's a competent mage thinks she's just a normal mage. A powerful one, sure, but nothing special. So it's not like the mages of 80 years ago passed down her tales like they were legend, they knew very little of the journey beside a few random testimonies from people they saved, and Frieren did literally nothing else of note.
    Frieren is just remembered as a footnote of history, nothing more. She's a bit more famous amongst mages, but even then there are young mages in the new generation who don't even remember her name, she's no Flamme and certainly no (you know who by now). As for her face, they don't have social media xD All they have to go on are statues and most of those are of Himmel alone anyway. Finally, while the simplistic look of anime makes statues look very similar to the characters, it's not actually how it works most of the time. No one would recognise a random elf because she looks similar to a statue. You wouldn't even notice she looks similar to the statue.

  • @DRienecker
    @DRienecker 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Ill throw my 2 cents around about Frieren and Elves not being famous... Nobody really knows a lot about the Elves, If i hasn't been explicitly stated yet it will be very soon, - other powerful mages don't even realize Elves have long life spans... Elves are extremely rare, Frieren, who travels, said the last time she saw an Elf was 400 years ago. Elves are extremely rare and probably have been for over a thousand years since the Demons targeted them before Human even had magic...
    Also: Frieren isn't famous, Himmel is. Frieren is a side character in the legend of Himmel the Hero. People may know Winston Churchhill... But how many would recognize or know about his wife? This is a better representation of Frieren's place in the hero's party.

    Your assumptions on the notoriety of Frieren's accomplishments is unfortunately misplaced. The world building is more complete than you can comprehend with your mindset of modern communication. Stories passed along town to town are warped and embellished, names may be forgotten. Think in terms of medieval fantasy communication and it may be easier to see why she isn't known like you expect. Also think about the MULTIPLE conversations she's had with humans about losing the meaning of heroes' deeds over time. ALSO the statue of the Hero Kraft in literally the last episode, and how no one knows who he was. I understand you're still getting used to the pace of the story, but try not to forget all the bread crumbs left by almost every episode.
