  • The driver of a tractor-trailer had to be extricated from the truck's cab early Saturday morning, after becoming entrapped when the vehicle overturned in the area of 173 Webster St.
    According to the Douglas Fire Department, the accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m.
    When Douglas Fire and EMS arrived at the scene it was determined that the driver was entrapped, necessitating a prolonged extrication.
    While Douglas Fire and EMS personnel began to assess the driver and begin extrication, mutual aid was summoned from Webster and Uxbridge for "heavy rescues," as well as and engine from Northbridge to the scene.
    The Sutton Fire Department was also requested for an engine to secure the a landing zone for a LifeFlight.
    EMS crews transport the driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned in Douglas early Saturday.
    The driver was flown to UMass Trauma Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries, according to Douglas fire officials.
    "We would like to thank our brothers and sisters from Webster, Uxbridge, Northbridge and Sutton for their assistance on this tremendously difficult call, the Douglas Fire Facebook post said. "We are grateful to have you as our partners. Strong work by all members from all departments."

    Been there done that. Truck rescues are tough. The worst was a two semi head on in February with negative wind chills. Took about two hours because we had to keep rotating staff. Keeping the patient warm was a top priority. Long day there. Patient was alert and oriented the whole time. The thanks we got and the smile when freed were worth more than any paycheck ever.

      I worked a semi rollover a few years ago. I was first on seen a went to the flatten cab on the truck and called out to the driver and was amazed to hear him answer , he had layer over with his head in the passenger seat during the roll.You are absolutely right, seeing the smile on his face and the heart felt thank you as he was able to walk away from that is worth more than most people can imagine. That is also what gets us through the bad ones.

      Advice from a volunteer for 30 years as far as animals are concerned, HIT them, well deer, moose and elk, try avoid a direct hit, but anything smaller use brakes but do not swerve. You will be less hurt (unless the tall moose come through the windshield) and hitting an "innocent" critter is better than that very hard and solid tree!

    Tt extrication can be difficult. They present a few obstacles that cars typically don't, like 95% fiberglass. Cutters and spreaders are almost useless because of the fiberglass. You basically have to cut it all out and take stuff apart the hard way. Hats off to these guys for a good extrication

    I was a fireman / first responder for 40 years. All volunteer service, we were all paid in the beginning 10 dollars a call. At the end paid 15 no matter you were there 5 minutes or 2 days, all the training and work away from your own business and family. We seen all the death and destruction we needed ever to see, but the players of sports and politician's get all the attention. I have the highest REGARDS to all the volunteers of service and hardly ever watch sports who are all overpaid.

    I see members of the flight crew standing by awaiting patient removal. Do they ever start administering interventions before the fire teams have successfully extricated the patient if feasible or required to keep the patient alive during the process?

    • @misseselise3864
      @misseselise3864 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sometimes they do! i had to be extricated after my wreck and paramedics got into the backseat to put a c-collar on me. but that was pretty much the only medical intervention that was possible in that situation. in this specific situation though, i doubt it was possible for anyone to get into the vehicle before the patient was extricated

      Regularly , yes , if an emt can get to patients without hindering extraction ,they will do so while we work free them. At least in my area anyway

      I'm from England and you will probably have a doctor in attendance for this type of call, either from helimed or the ambulance service trauma car, frequently trauma specialist though your starting to see more doctors who specialises in pre-hospital emergency medicine
