She was saying that she doesn't want to just do songs that are constantly belting, she likes to explore different parts of her voice (whistle, whisper, low notes, etc) to portray her emotions in other ways artistically
Belting just isn't her thing... thats all she had to say. She didn't need put down the art of belting... that just makes her seem envious/jealous or upset about it
That's the point. Her 90s concerts weren't pre-recorded, yet she has no issue with using the vocals from then in her more recent concerts. If she doesn't want to be a belter (and I don't actually think that's what she was saying), then why doesn't she sing those classics the way she wants to sing them -- with fewer belts -- rather than rely on the pre-recorded vocals, particularly for the belted parts?
Thank you preach. I love that she saves the belting for the climax of her songs. It adds dynamic not just one long powerful song. It takes you on a ride of emotions
Do I need to have a point?? XD, no really the point of the video in simple words is that she doesn't belt all the time like other singers not because she can't but because is more fun to do all those vocal acrobatics than just belt a note for ten minutes.
OK, but if you put only beltings in your video, it seems right the oposite, which means that she belts all the time. So you should have put other vocal acrobatics to prove your point better.
I don't think she means she hates to belt she just means doing it all the time is boring she likes to use lots of different tones where as people complain when shes singing softer in falsetto/whisper so her comment was to do with that.
+Joseph.E Yeah I personally prefer her style of singing, it's more dynamic. I know that many people often complain that she doesn't sustain her notes much but it's just her style, she has more fun that way and lets her creativity flows.
+ondy andra Ironically her "whisper" singing is the one critics hate a lot. I think she utilizes it very beautifully but it kind of went out of proportion by the time Charmbracelet was released.
Actually she has sung in that whisper voice many times live. Specifically during the Charmbracelet era I noticed she had trouble singing in the whisper voice but in other eras she can.
Federico Raggio Make It Happen would be a perfect example , runs ,melismas whispery but the highlights there was her belting though out the song. Go listen to her Angels Advocate tour
I have one unique reason for loving MC's songs: it's full of surprises and variations you often don't find from other artists' songs. Lows, mid belt, upper belt, whispers, falsetto, whistles, ad-libs and other vocal dynamics. She mixes them all and knew it just right when to deploy each of them to make it good. There are few other who sits on her level that also do the same, but not as often as MC does.
I think she's referring to her "Hero", "One Sweet Day", "Vanishing", "Forever", "Without You", "Open Arms", "AYNAF" type songs...like they are generally(not to us fans) but boring. I think she may have meant singing just ballads not necessarily belting lol
***** girl duh it's not a bad thing, IJS she just wasn't into ballads. it was the a label thing, that's why she's not out here making Adele-esque ballads in 2016
***** never said Adele wasn't successful dummy but Mariah thinks all that belting is boring. any lamb would know that, like what's your point of commenting
I think she never liked to belt. I think as she was the "rival" for Celine and Whitney, Tommy Motolla obligated her to belt, 'cause if you pay attention on "Butterfly" songs, she did a lot less belts than in her previous albuns.... And just belting makes the songs sound too similar. Whintey and Celine's songs sound almost all the same, 'cause they're just crazy-belt compilations. I really love Mariah's "Music Box", it's my favorite album from her, but there are some tracks that sound the same in some parts, 'cause they're full of the same resonant+vibrated belts....
***** This can be called "particular taste" or "opinion". I prefer a dinamyc song where you do melismas, whispers, whistles, falsettos, glissandos, legattos, crescendos, head voice notes, low notes and then a few belts than a whole song of crazy belts. "Better" requires someone's point of view, and we can have different ones...
***** For me it's before the bridge. I love the dinamycs she does whit the melismatic airy-husky whispers in the second part (after the first chorus). I'm not saying i don't like the bridge, but in Butterfly, i prefer the whispered part. In songs as Never Forget You, for example, i love the whole belted part in the end, but in songs as If It's Over, Vanishing or Emotions, even being songs with incredible vocals, they make me bored sometimes with the amount of belts they have...
***** I love BOTH!!!!! It's one of the first Mariah's songs i listened and the song that made me fall in love with her. I love the whisper she does in this song 'cause it's not the same thing all the time. She put a lot of melismas, runs and trills on them. Butterfly has some of my favorite verses. Mariah did them with unusual whispers. She went really high in the second verse whispering and it made her whistle be husky, airy and polyphonic, and i love all this characteristics, so, I'm the wrong person to say if it's boring or not... LOL I love CB, but, here is the point that you said: i think she did SO MUCH whispers on this album, and it's not so innovative, considering she did it through her entire career, so, some songs are really boring 'cause it just has Mariah whispering in the same way she did in another ones... I like DINAMYCS, and that's why i really love Music Box album. It's an album where she did all she could with her voice.
I agree. But I think belting is Celine and Whitney's strong point. Mariah is great at belting as well but I think she's best when it comes to riffs and runs, she is the queen of melisma, and her whistle register is the best I have ever heard. She has the best vocal technique it's out of this world.
Jasmin C. Yeah. Whitney mainly.... Celine and Whitney's tones are favorable to do this. I think her voice is so soft to be belting so much. This is what I don't like in Ariana's singing style: her super light voice makes her belts be like screams where she screams all the time. I prefer Mariah belting in the final of the 4th octave and in the beginning of the 5th 'cause her voice isn't so thinner in this range, but, even so, i prefer her dinamycs than most part of her belts.
As some others on this page have pointed out, Mariah's voice is not intended for a lot of extensive belting anyway. Most singers have either naturally "pretty voices" or "powerful voices" ...rarely does a singer naturally have BOTH. The closest I have ever heard is Whitney Houston. Whitney had a soft, beautiful voice and it was also strong as hell. In her prime, Mariah had a naturally beautiful voice and her voice could be pushed to sound strong and to belt...but too much of that is not good for her voice. Even in her prime, Mariah's voice was more delicate than someone like a Patti labelle or Aretha Franklin. Their voices are more cut out for a lot of belting.
As someone who gets bored when watching videos about belts, it can be boring watching 20 minutes of people basically bellowing , lol. As for an individual singer belting, at least one belt per song is exciting. I generally love belts more than a bunch of runs. Mariah is one person who usually foes both well, and in good enough taste for me. I won't name who doesn't...but you can guess.
Best belter this planet has every seen besides miss LaBelle, The late Whitney Houston and if course Miss Streisand herself. Ver resonant vocals even in the fifth octaves and very great control of her range
When this interview was made (2009) her most recent album (Memoirs) didn't have a lot of belts compared to get older albums... There were many songs on that album that barely had any chest notes...
Guys she talking about belting throughout the entire song like she used to in the past. She still does just towards the end of her songs now. I know wat she means, I picked up wat she meant.
Belting can be a bit much for her, and some other singers, so she'd rather stick to what she is more comfortable with that she does well or better than belting.
for me CELINE DION BELT iS MORE MORE STRONG !!! ^^but i prefere tone of maria becaus more Young voice maria have range vocal ok but no very strong voice!!!
I think that belting in her head is the main course but she always had to add the flavoring with her runs and transitions. It's basically bland when you isolate belting, although it sounds amazing.
K. Whatever... Hahahaha kidding! Mariah should do what she wants. And if she says “belting is boring” then she should have rest. We all know how good Mariah is. So....
mariah's belts are too vanilla to me. a very straight tone, not round nor rich, which is crazy because her lower range is very warm but once she gets to the belting part its boring
she doesn't detest her first album that's bullshit her song vision of love have inspired millions of singers all around the world and changed pop music forever. she made amazing success. The only thing she has ever said about her album is that she felt like "Someday" was overproduced .
Okay she probably doesn't detest them but she doesn't show much love for 'em either. One of the people in her PR team (LironD) said her least favourite albums were debut, emotions, and unplugged. Not sure about this but I know she loves Vision of Love and Vanishing though.
It may have been the material that she "detested", you know like when you look back at old photos of yourself and cringe at how you used to be? Like that. With Unplugged, I get that because it was so different to her and didn't she have to do a few takes of each song to get it perfect? She's not a fully confident live performer like Whitney, say, and that could be due to her vocal issue/nodules.
of course she's gonna say that, what with the voice she has left? go back in time to 1993 and ask her again, you'd get a different answer I assure you.
Ok mariah I understand belting is not your thing but just cause you not good at it like Celine & Whitney doesn't mean you have to speak negatively about it. Celine never says whistling like a mouse or nails on a chalkboard sounds annoying. But this is typical of mariah and why I never liked her music or style as much.. she seem self-centered, pompous, lacking compassion & soul. Drop the diva attitude because it's not cute. Should be more of a role model for the fans like Celine.
Not good at it? I'm sorry but did you even watch the damn video? Go listen to any "Forever" live performance, it's basically a harder version of Whitney's "I will always love you." I'm not bashing Whitney at all, I love her, I'm just calling out your stupidity.
She said her OPINION, and she didn’t say that belting is a bad thing, she simply doesn’t think that belting is all in a song, your comment is really dumb. And if you’re saying bad things about Mariah only because of her appearance, I’ll say you that she’s HUMAN, and the humans not always have to pretend perfection
This video adds more evidence of MC's lazy lip-syncing during the past 20 years. yes she's belting but she's adding it with melismas in the end of belts to not boring lol
showing short moments of belting does not deny what she said about not belting all the time, she's right!
+Prof. Thiago Lopes no it doesn't
+Charlie B exactly, so what's your point?

Belting is where her voice shines though.

hahahaahaha lol
I don't get the meaning of this video. lol
