Me , the wife and kids test drove one a few weeks ago and were blown away! We are coming from a Honda Accord and currently own a Mazda CX9...the Model 3 is far superior in comfort and overall experience...the turn indicators were surprisingly not an issue for me..i can see how roundabouts and quick changing lanes would be a problem. Buying this vehicle soon! Great review
VERY! good Video! WOW! I drove the Model 3 Highland as a Loaner, and i was BLOWN AWAY! I will buy one. Its WAY better than my 21 Y Lr! Its a complete other league!
I already have mine for a month, but the AWD version. I agree a lot about the quality, is a well finished car and has many features that you can find in cars in higher price range. However, as you mention, it has several "annoyances". 1. The BIGGEST one, the turn indicators. * Not having them in a fixed place bothers me a lot. Here in Belgium you have a lot of roundabouts, is very difficult to indicate when you are going to exit. * You always need to indicate before turn, otherwise it will be hard. * Some times in the highway, you press the wrong button (maybe in a stress condition), and is difficult to know which one you pressed. There is no indication, like in the normal cars, the lights in the dashboard * Other times, pressing the button does not work, so you have to press another time or harder * The lack of the normal "sticks" makes difficult to share the car to other people 2. Cruise control * I think I have like a 80% working rate for this. You have a small wheel to scroll up or down to increase or decrease the speed. If you scroll like 3 or 4 "clicks", it increase or decrease the speed by 5 Km/h, and you may fail this last frequently. So keep scrolling one by one * The last update, now allows you to disable the wipers. But again, it does not respect my preferences. If the wipers are turned off in the configuration and you turn the cruise control on, the wipers are changed to Auto and you have to disable them back again. * When the car detects a new speed limit, it automatically slows down if is lower that the previous one. In several situations, it detected wrongly the speed limit sign and it slows down without any reason and you start fighting with the car to speed up. It doesn't allows you to set a higher speed either. 3. Autosteer (like a cruise control but keeps your car centered in the lane) * I configured to set it on by making double click on the scroll wheel button in the steering wheel. A lot of times, when I have the cruise control on and try to start the Autosteer, it fail to recognize the double click and it disables the cruise control. The first times it happened, I paniqued because the car start breaking (because of the Regenerative Braking) in the highway and I had cars at the back. I learned that if I want to turn on the Autosteer, always put the feet in the accelerator! * Same other problems as the cruise control * Also problems with the high lights. When Autosteer is turned on, it change the settings to automatically turn on the high lights when needed. The problem is it turn them in the highway and bother other cars. So, you have to manually change the configuration to use the lower only. But there is a catch, when you park the car, the car lights will not turn off!!! You have to turn them off manually. I stopped using Autosteer at night or in low light conditions, to avoid disable all the time the wipers and lights, even is a really good option. * I think if you switch between Cruise control and Autosteer, you have to change back the wipers and lights again because are restored to Auto. I think, this are the 3 most annoying things that you will have. The last 2 are fixable by a software update, but the first one, we should complain a lot and maybe have a recall from the goverment to make Tesla give the option to put the light indicators again.
it's maybe one of the best available channels out there for car reviews in terms of high quality content combined with relevant, professional information - being from Canton of Zug it's appreciated that you are embedding your videos into the beautiful pre-alpine landscape of the area, starting usually @the harbor with mount Rigi as a background 🙂
Thank you for the great review! I'll be ordering the new Highland in January and videos like these make me even more excited to finally drive it full-time.
brilliant review by a sensible man. No nonsense, hysteria or hype - just plain facts which is all thats ever needed. Other reviewers please note. Thank you.
i been driving this car for 3 weeks, the screen in the middle is not a problem at all, i dont know why people keep looking at the speed...even if u want to look, is the same as looking at the speed in front of you. Unless you are talking about head up display. If you care so much about over the speed limit , just set speed limit warning.
You are right, of course, but my point is that if Tesla wants to sell hundreds of thousands of Model 3, Model Y and later Model 2 then mainstream acceptance and easy-to-use controls are key.
Thanks Morten for your excellent review based on an obviously vast experience within the auto industry. I enjoyed it and will look forward to future videos.
i genuinely like this formula. simple, modern, cheap but good built, technologically superior vehicle. the only thing missing here is a rear wheel steering that’s in new cybertruck for easy parking. would appreciate yoke steering wheel with steer by wire but it’s not that necessary. i do believe that this is THE car for everyone in europe.
@@martinlisbonmusic2506 I'm not sure how familiar you are with rain or rather water repellents, but they are a great solution in this case. It makes the lack of a rear wiper much less necessary, as the wind will blow almost all the water off thanks to the very slanted roof. I personally use RainX on all my vehicles for this reason.
There are very few sedans that have rear wheel steering and way fewer (if any) at a sub 40k (usd) price point. I don’t find rear wheel steering to be necessary for a sedan anyway as they are already quite maneuverable compared to an suv or pickup. Otherwise I agree that this is a modern well built car.
Thx, appreciate your kind feedback. I must confess that I borrowed the car from Tesla, however, I study the cars in detail and form my opinion after several hours in it. Next upcomings tests are Model 3 Long-Range snd Volvo EX30.
can't wait to hear your review of the ex30....i have a pre order trying to decide between highland and ex30, your opinion would be greatly appreciated !! retired married guy with dog here in the states. is that highland Black???.....it is absolutely beautiful (my sweet wife disagrees) SM ex30 or rwd 3 highland?
The Volvo EX30 has great quality and drives well. It ist very compact, tending to be small. Efficiency is average. The Model 3 is much bigger (+50cm) and offers more space, more power and better range. Difficult choice!
Thank You Morten I'll have to test drive both and decide. Small is good as long as it is safe this x BMW owner was shifting priorities at age 70...comfort and safety over performance and I don't need big range@@morten_hannesbo all your thoughts are appreciated !
lovely video. I love my 2021 model 3 refresh. Im keeping it until forever. I also got the lfp and i dont see why i would need the bigger battery. Have a good day sir
I just bought this model and I will receive after couple of weeks but I’m still wondering if maybe I should choose the long range because of the audio system…?! How is it audio quality in rwd model?
Your last comment about missing HUD option and need to look at the big display to check speed, that draw my concern and I decided to exclude Tesla in my shopping list. Big thanks.
If you get confused about the indicatores, just remember that the right turn signal always points towards the center of the steering wheel no matter the position.
🥴Yes, ok, but still suboptimal. I find that holding your thum on the right turn signal button from when you enter the roundabout works reasonably well. But I do not like Tesla's solution.
Looks like Tesla keeps maintaining the technology gap ahead of more established brands who are playing the EV catch-up game. This new model 3 looks like a complete no brainer decision for anyone on the market for a new car. Thanks for the super professional video! You've not only convinced me to buy model 3 Highland as my next new car, but also to retire in Swiss alps when the time comes! :D
Not at all a no brainer, just a choice worth considering. When you notice the noise at highway speed compared to other cars in that price range (Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, BMW iX1, Kia EV6) and the really bad seats for a tall person, not to mention the indicator and gear selecter choices, it doesn't seem a no brainer anymore. Good car, depends what you're looking for and what you like.
@@Bogdan27911 For me this is also an investment. Hyundai, BMW, Kia EV technology is already 10 years outdated compared to Tesla Highland, and yet their prices are higher! I would feel like buying a rundown apartment for more than a brand new villa! I rarely drive cars, so this will be first time getting properly used to a car, I don't mind if it's different than all others. The downsides you present are all related to comfort (or how spoiled or used to something else you are). Entirely superficial. For me it's a no brainer. But you can do whatever you want with your money, of course ;-)
@@danfronzeil7332 Good luck dealing with back pain and noise in your state of the art tech car. I gave you some things to check out before buying, but if confort seems superficial to you when driving, please go ahead and choose technology and investments.
@@Bogdan27911 I've always purchased cars around the price range of the Model 3 Long Range. And for the price, they offer the most features, and comfort from equivalent competition. I currently don't own the Model 3 Highland, but I do plan on purchasing it later this year, once my lease on my current car (2021 Acura) ends. Compared to my current car, it offers more features, and equivalent or slightly more comfort. As the other person already mentioned, what you value in the car is completely subjective, and you may put higher priority on certain aspects more than others. And what you are used to also plays a role in your final decision, of course. For me, personally, this car is a big upgrade from my current car, and nothing else in the market in the same segment and price comes close.
Well done, you will be very happy with it I am sure. Charging in winter is a bit slow, but still ok. See my winter test of the model 3 highland on the channel.
You forgot the most important details. It is the safest car on the road, it is the most efficient, it holds its value and it gets better over time with over the air software upgrades and best value for money.
Thank you! I already did a review on the LR, hope to get to the performance soon. 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Highland th-cam.com/video/1kaChbXZY0E/w-d-xo.html
Great review! Agree 100% about your feedback regarding a HUD. I would only posit that with the transition away from stocks Tesla intends to turn to steer-by-wire with variable ratio steering in all future models, which makes the transition from stocks much more natural because of the associated small lock to lock angle with the steering wheel. Obviously it's more of a problem without the steer-by-wire.
Hello. I have searched around and I haven't found any information about RF/EMF radiation, of the new Model 3, I wonder if they have improved that, as well...? Could you please make a vídeo with those measurements at feet level, seats level, and head level for the 4 places of the car, at highway speeds? Thank you so much for your content. Seasons Greetings!
We ordered Tesla model 3 Highland, and main reason for that is that i like what Tesla did ,is improving the Car significantly in comparison with previous one,and price stayed the same. It’s something that many Car manufacturers would not do. Head up display is something is really missing on every Tesla Car. I mean Electric Car is so cost friendly in day life, from Insurance to charging costs, inspection etc ( there is information that’s probably true about tiers that they don’t last long, something like 2 years, and if so it’s still ok for me,i can live with spending 800€ for new tires every 2 years) in comparison with petrol/engine car. Of course for somebody that drives long track very often is not best option, but form many people yes. In my case ,if we take vacation, its flying somewhere to 90% of the time. To be fair, from where i live , 800km range/radius (meaning start from home fully charged, and having one stop to charge on the way) it’s more then enough for us to take family trip.
Good review. Your English sounds like you are Danish, like me. Are you planning to also review the BYD Seal RWD. Here in Denmark it is the clear competitor to the model 3 RWD. It is currently a little more expensive, but not if you go for the 19" wheels on the Tesla. But BYD sells the Seal almost 10000 Euro cheaper in Australia and even includes the HUD, real leather and V2L adapter with this model, which they dont do in Europe. In Australia they even sells an entry level version with a 60kw battery for around 30000 Euro. This model has a weaker motor, artificial leather and 18" wheels like the Tesla, and no HUD, much like the European version.
We do not have BYD here in Switzerland yet - but I look forward to testing out the Seal. BYD is the manufacturer to watch and the most likely manufacturer to challenge Tesla for leadership in EV sales. The BYD Seal should be fine, just make sure to lease it ilo of buying it because the residual values may be poor. The efficiency/range of the Tesla should be better, though.
Dear Morten, thank you for a great review. Please believe me the front display is not needed. I have installed one in M3 and hardly used it. You get used to that central screen and within a split of a second you get relevant information so actually you start ignoring the front small display.

Greetings from Zug and thanks for the great review Mr Hannesbo. You've gotten me off the fence about the Long and Standard range Highlands. I think the Standard is more than enough for me, and the LFP battery with its 100% charge ability puts it on parity with an 80 % charged NCA battery. Of course you can also charge an NCA to 100% but with > degradation. As for the stalk issue, I agree it is a pain and not optimal for European drivers but I will have to adapt (I will however be mad if they do a U-turn and bring stalks back later).
Thank you, great to have comments from fellow Zuger inhabitants! Yes, the Model 3 SR rear-wheel drive will be plenty for most. I drove up Zugerberg in icy and slippery conditions using the anti-slip mode. Great car.
@@morten_hannesbo Thanks for comments directed at RWD response on icy/snow. I live in Midwest u.s. and i'm looking forward to a highland at some point this year, initially wanted the RWD as lowest price point and reasonable range for me, I live where winters are really snowy and icy and past rear wheel drive vehicles of mine the rear end badly wants to come around but them have all been older cars that predate anti slip tech. I've not heard much iif any comments on how RWD performs in icy/snowy conditions on these review videos and i've been curious to know. p.s. might have to choose AWD regardless though unless something changes, cause Performance version is only one keeping the u.s. 7500 ev federal discount it seems for 2024 for model 3 and with that against a non discounted RWD or LR, what can one do. :P I think model y RWD gets the discount so I will probably have to evaluate between performance 3 or rwd y, but would want juniper update and probably need a car before then, oh well :). Unless something changes. I liked the style of your video and your voice and the way you present. all excellent.
@@estebanelguapoI think you would be fine with RWD in winter 99% of the time, assuming you use proper winter tyres and not all-year tyres, but of course 4x4 will always have more traction😊.
@@morten_hannesbo I thought I should potentially opt for the performance only because its the only one that qualifies for 7500; but perhaps knowing the oddness of the decisionmaking involved due to that perhaps that is why they are not currently offering performance now that they are offering highland here as of today/yesterday. The custom builder only has RWD and LR. I guess it makes it less difficult for me that way 🤔. I worry a bit if I order now maybe something changes in a month. But currently my current concern is I cant make up my mind between ultra red, blue and stealth gray. Im a blue person but not been keen on the blue they offer, I'm not normally a red person but I like certain shades of red and ultra red might work for me, grey might be what I go for. might have been nice if the quicksilver were available. ultimately I think I need drive to the showplace 1.5hrs from me and just stare at whatever colors are on inventory vehicles in person but I checked inventory vehicles and ultra red S (just to choose colors for the online custom builder since no highland e's in inventory yet may not be for very long time hafta order it via the web) and blue anything, but no inventory stealth grays. I'd thought stealth gray was supposed to have been normal for some s and x. apparently none sitting around near me. If I burn a few weeks maybe they'll have something in inventory so I can assuage my color issues, youtube videos just dont translate same as in person. would be nice if vinyl wraps weren't so expensive then nothing would matter I could guaranteed find something for me that way. Wish tesla vertically integrated wrapping to the point they could force the pricing of it down or do it at cost to drive sales. Sorry im wordy. There prob is no cure for that. 🤒
Much enjoyed the comprehensive review. I have a TESLA M3 rwd on order. Will be an interesting transition from my excellent BMW 330e Touring. I’m of a certain ‘vintage’ will be interesting to see if I can cope with the indicators buttons PS Some BMW drivers DO use indicators 🤔😂😂😂
Great review! Very clear story and high quality footage. I really want this car in black, but having owned a black car before I know it only looks good a week after washing it haha. So maybe white is a better option (and cheaper).
@@morten_hannesbo Unfortunately that's the most expensive color and would get the car to a price point where I'd miss out on 3k government incentive ;)
Hi, Would you clear a thing for me please. Is RWD also has 17 speakers as advertised or 17 are only available in long range model??? Can't see this information anywhere really :(.
Thanks for sharing your real world test results for the highland version. I agree with you about the indicator stalk. The buttons on the steering wheel will be awkward for signalling an exit from a roundabout. Can a turn signal be activated by voice command? If not, perhaps a software upgrade could provide a solution. Likewise, it would help if the software could give the driver an option to activate turn signals based on the destination entered into the route planner.
I imagine at some point the software solution will be a better option. As an example, imagine coming up to a roundabout and the navigation automatically uses the turn signal to enter and exit the roundabout. I just hope that when and if it is implemented that they don't restrict its use to FSD only.
The indicator buttons on the wheel is the biggest drawback for me. Tried for three months to get used to it in the model S, but I found that it was impossible to use without actually taking your eyes off the road and looking down first, which is a safety concern in roundabouts for example. You don't want to look down at the steering wheel in a critical situation with cars all around you. The problem is that the buttons move around when turning the wheel. You never really know where they end up until you look down. A fixed stalk on the other hand is always in the same location, so you can train your muscle memory to use it even without looking. I can always find the indicator stalk, even with my eyes closed. But I will never ever be able to turn the wheel, and then put my finger on the correct button with my eyes closed in a new model 3... That's just impossible, and that's the problem here. It's just a foolish cost-cutting decision by Tesla, just like the removal of the ultrasonic parking sensors. The park assist is basically useless now that it's camera-based, just like the auto wipers which are still terrible after all these years, despite constant promises to fix it. Apparently, cameras are not an ideal replacement for everything... I wish they bring back the stalks at some point, but they probably won't.. I was hyped about the new model 3, and had decided to buy one, but the turn signal buttons on the steering wheel is reason enough for me to not buy one, unfortunately. There are roundabouts everywhere here, and It's really that annoying, and I don't want to pay good money for a car that constantly annoys me.
Fully agree. I will never get to like this. You do get used to it after a few weeks, and yet it remains a safety issue, especially if you drive different cars with and without indicator stalks.
Good review. I'm glad I got the 2023 Model Y last year before they removed the steering wheel stalks -- I think that goes a little too far on the minimalism. Hopefully, they'll revert to the stalks if enough people complain.
Dear Morten, thank you. It seems to me you might be in quality engineering? Your review is well judged and certainly vocal to the automotive world. I worked for decades in developing processes also for a large semiconductor company in Lithography. I fully agree your review, I received my Model 3 Highland 2 weeks ago and have driven 800 km. The safety aspects of missing the indicator stalks is getting smaller but still not negligible. In the Netherlands we had Temperatures around 5 deg C and with that came an impressive average energy use of 151 W/km. Its a very nice car indeed.
Hi, I worked in product marketing at Ford of Europe and European brand manager and learned a lot about engineering, but I am a trained marketeer. The rest of my career I ran national sales companies as a CEO. Wish I had decided to study for an engineering degree when I was young!
@@danielstoicamusic If the steeringweel rotation is so much that I take over the wheel with my left hand, then the right hand thumb goes counter clockwise on the inside of the wheel to the switch to indicate turn right. When you touch the sensor switch on the top it works fine. For smaller diameter roundabouts you keep both hands on the wheel and your left thumb feels the switch. In any case you can keep your eyes on the road. Sometimes the indicator comes on too late. Then you curse Mr Musk and hopefully all is fine.
@@morten_hannesbo Hi Morten, nice to hear this. I worked also with Automotive Auditors so I was curious indeed. You could have been one, but your career is impressive. I think we have come to an age to enjoy also the other things in life and we are fortunate to be able to choose for environmentaly less carbon footprint mobility. :-)
I really enjoyed this test. I also own a Highland Model 3 but I still need to buy the winter tyres. Would it be possible to know the Tyre brand and model?
Thanks Steve Martin. Good question, because it is difficult to see when you are a driver! I tested it, and I can tell you that it is a yes and a no. If regenerative braking is aggressively slowing (such as when your foot is completely off the accelerator pedal at highway speeds), then the brake lights turn on to alert others that you are slowing down. If you just use regenerative braking slightly it will not come on. PS Congrats on your son's purchase.
@@morten_hannesbo Thank you for replying. I wasn't a fan until I went for a drive in his Tesla & also drove it. Wow, what a machine. All the best to you.
“indicators” (7:30) will be intuitive for drivers who own motorcycles… I hate to use a term that has become a cliche’ but removing stalks indicates a critical inflection point in the change to autonomy.
thanks for great review I have the same two points which i do not like in this car. But I have also one question. What is real range when you drive "normal" but dynamic?
Thanks for the great review Morten . I am still hesitating between the Standard version and Long Range and, between 18' or 19' wheels. What would you advise ?
It would be interesting to see wall power consumption via your charging app details, as Tesla’s trip computer doesn’t include climate while parked, preconditioning, phantom use while parked, sentry mode, and so on. Other cars may calculate things differently so going with the actual electricity charged into the battery provides more of an apples to apples comparison.
Hi, thx for watching. The car was a press vehicle from Tesla - so I cannot show the data. I do test all cars the same way though, i.e. run it as my daily driver and use it the way 99% of owners do. What I can say is that the Tesla M3 is exceptionally efficient and the heating uses very little energy because of the good insulation of the car, including double glazed windows.
One of the best reviews I witness from Europe. On point and exactly what I was searching for. Mine will arrive soon I chose the long range version. There are some questions that I would like to ask. On your display if you put a long range travel above 1000 KM from Wien to let´s say Koln does it shows where all the chargers are or I will need a separate app for it? What about the western side of Europe for example from Wien to Budapest or Bucharest ? As well from your experience did it happened to arrive at a charger and see it missing or broken compared to the display on the map (if existed) ? Thanks. LG Gigi
🙏 Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, the car will tell you where to charge and pre-condition the battery to enable fast charging. All included with the car. In Eastern Europe there are less chargers and I have no experience there. In Western Europe there are thousands of chargers as well, see: www.tesla.com/findus. I have not experienced broken Tesla chargers, and I normally charge at home.
I have not driven the EQA. I am sure it is a fine car as are all the EQ Mercedes products, but I cannot compare. If you drive many km then the Model 3 is probably the better choice because of its superior efficiency.
A third thing I don't like about the new Model 3 (and the old one also) is the removal of parking sensors, because the camera system has a lousy precision in estimating distances to some obstacles.
I used to think that Tesla HL would also remind me of the distance and danger behind when reversing, just like my other Audi Q5L, so I confidently collided with the car parked in the back space...
You do get used to the indicator layout, but why choose a suboptimal solution?

There is no indication, like in the normal cars, the lights in the dashboard
* Other times, pressing the button does not work, so you have to press another time or harder
* The lack of the normal "sticks" makes difficult to share the car to other people
2. Cruise control
* I think I have like a 80% working rate for this. You have a small wheel to scroll up or down to increase or decrease the speed. If you scroll like 3 or 4 "clicks", it increase or decrease the speed by 5 Km/h, and you may fail this last frequently. So keep scrolling one by one
* The last update, now allows you to disable the wipers.
3. Autosteer (like a cruise control but keeps your car centered in the lane)
* I configured to set it on by making double click on the scroll wheel button in the steering wheel.
* Same other problems as the cruise control
* Also problems with the high lights.
The last 2 are fixable by a software update, but the first one, we should complain a lot and maybe have a recall from the goverment to make Tesla give the option to put the light indicators again.

i genuinely like this formula. simple, modern, cheap but good built, technologically superior vehicle. the only thing missing here is a rear wheel steering that’s in new cybertruck for easy parking. would appreciate yoke steering wheel with steer by wire but it’s not that necessary. i do believe that this is THE car for everyone in europe.
Rear glass wiper would be useful as well, at least as an option...
@@jay.rsingh2530it’s too expensive and not needed on a car this small

I would not buy the LR because of the audio system, both audio systems are excellent. Only buy LR if you need the bigger battery and/or 4x4
This car looks really good in black
Totally agree. You don’t see many black cars on the street and even less black Teslas. Will pickup mine in 2 days. Can’t wait!

Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Greetings from Switzerland
Both of them good choices😊🇨🇭

Tesla need to make the left indicator on the left side of the steering wheel, and the right indicator button on the right side of the steering wheel !
Thanks for a straightforward video sir. Good job.

Great video and a balanced one.

Hi,
Would you clear a thing for me please. Is RWD also has 17 speakers as advertised or 17 are only available in long range model??? Can't see this information anywhere really :(.
Hi, the rear-wheel drive has just 9 speakers and 1 amplifier. The longrange has 17 speakers, 2 subwoofers and 2 amplifiers. Both sound great.
definitely interested on your view of the BYD cars. Seal competes with the model 3. And Seal U with the model Y
We still do not have BYD in my country. Will test their cars as soon as they become available
Thank you for comments and thank you for watching. To my knowledge the voice control cannot activate the indicator.
you want voice activated turn signals? are you serious?
Does the 2024 rear wheel drive Tesla 3 have adaptive suspension.?
No, only the model 3 performance has adaptive suspension.
I think the turn signal button will be more of a problem outside of USA because of more roundabouts.
USA doesn't have many roundabouts
fair point👍
Good review. I'm glad I got the 2023 Model Y last year before they removed the steering wheel stalks -- I think that goes a little too far on the minimalism. Hopefully, they'll revert to the stalks if enough people complain.
Thx for watching!
I think we can thank the removal of stalks to the influence of Dieter Rams. Save that Stalks!

How do you signal when exiting a roundabout in The 🇳🇱?
@@danielstoicamusic By law here in CH you have to signal when going into the roundabout and again when you leave it.
Then you curse Mr Musk and hopefully all is fine.

very good review, but why you not mention BYD Seal ???
Hi, BYD is not yet sold in my country.
Nice review, thanks. My son just bought one. Do the brake lights come on when the regenerative braking begins?

Thanks.

What do you think about the EQA? I can’t decide between the EQA facelift or this new Tesla.
