This place will always have a special part of my heart because this was my dad's last trip before he died. I had just moved to Iowa and dad and mom visited. Dad had been diagnosed with cancer a year ago but seemed healthy enough to leave home, doctor gave him the OK, so they did it. We went to Winterset where we toured the bridges, went to the restaurant where the movie was shot, mom had great fun getting to sit in the chair where Clint Eastwood sat. We visited an ice cream place called frostee's and went to the John Wayne Museum. We then did some other things in Des Moines including going to an Iowa Barnstormers arena football game. After that trip, dad died just a few months later. So now this place is kind of the last place where we all got to hang out as a family and it really means a lot to me now.
There is a restaurant in downtown Des Moines called Buzzard Billy's. It's a good restaurant but my mom won't go there anymore because it reminds of her of dad.@@TravelwithaWiseguy
As a young Marine back in Dec of 1977 I met the late John Wayne in the driveway of his home in Newport Beach CA. He was not dressed as a cowboy but in a sailor outfit. he loved his boats. I took a friend of mine at the time to his home, my young friend lived next door to John Wayne, As we got out of my Truck, the first words that I heard were. " Who is the young fellow with you?" then my friend introduced me as his friend who was stationed at El Toro Sir Station. while we all talked for about 15 minutes about anything and everything, I absolutely remember nothing that we talked about. :) It was small talk. That is my John Wayne story.
You were truly blessed and lucky. Cool. My lovely and beloved wife met him at a party once. John was helping himself to the orderves across the table and winked at her. It was a special and memorable moment for her. He was a special and good man for sure. Blessings to you sir.
I second That. also, wiseguy has the right music at the right time in the video. I think that it is the timing of the music that really makes the video good.
Another place for my bucket list. Loved the book. (Never saw the movie. I know, I know...) So many of us look forward to joining you on your travels. Thank you!
Yes finally a dog in the closing. I started the video upon notification and was number 2 and there were 20 watching at the end, indicating that there’s a lot of people like me that anticipate your posting. Fine job my friend
I don't know much about Iowa, and never read the book or saw the movie about the bridges. This is a really nice tribute to Madison County. Kudos to the people for saving the bridges. Looks like a beautiful place. Thank you for the tour.
You picked a great time of year to go to Iowa with all the trees turning colors. The drive through the part was so pretty and peaceful. Love seeing all of the bridges. I wonder how long some of the covers will stand. Thanks for sharing.
Another great video! I love that you take the time to look around, comment and tell some of the history of the area. Also look forward to your drone shots of the areas. Gee I'm glad someone invented drones 😊. Always love your videos dear, stay safe and GOD bless
Good Sunday Morning Brother. Another excellent video posted, looks like an awesome area to visit.....some day. That one bridge w/ the stream over it, is what is known here as a "low water" bridge, there's a couple south of the Joplin area. Thank you for showing us Madison County Iowa today. Stay Safe and Be Blessed. 🇺🇸
As a native Iowan, your videos make me homesick. The standing trees and timber, the rolling hills, the streams and rivwrs with rock outcroppings, winding and quiet little roads and trails, just too many things that you brought back from my memories. Had a friend at college from way back when that was from there. Made me wonder about where that person we called "Johnny- Reb might be today. Thank you for another wonder video.
What a wonderful road trip so many old bridges and so much to see how neat thanks for showing it all and the ride as well keep up the good work. Awesome
Thank you so much for your video and for sharing with us. I love your thoroughness in visiting all the bridges and for all the extras you added with the movie scenes, etc. And I loved the background guitar music too, to blend so nicely with the lovely autumn trees and country setting. My friend is visiting his cousin there right now and visiting the bridges and so I wanted to see where he was and fortunately came upon your delightful and excellent video, so thanks again. Happy journeys.
It's a great place to go for just an outing. Actually one of the most relaxing "tourist area" I've come across in a long time. Fortunately, it's not too far of a excursion from where I live.......
If you are ever in Indiana, Parke County has 31 covered bridges and has a huge festival in October. I live in Rockville where the festival is held but it spreads out to smaller towns in the county.
Very pretty area. Has not watched an (entire) parade go by in 20 years, well. All the bridges are kind of odd. I was going to ask... how do you move a bridge, but I saw how. Really nice video, thank you for posting ! Be good, be safe !
As a person who was born and raised here, this is THE DEFNITIVE tribute to our county, it's bridges, history and future. Thank you SO much for highlighting us. There is so much more to discover here...accidental or on purpose. Stop and talk some more with our people. We all have stories, we all have Madison County history. Thank you SO much for the bit you shared about us.
Interesting and enjoyable as usual. When Meryl Streep was filming the French Lieutenant's Woman in and around Lyme Regis in Dorset a scene was filmed near where my mother lived and she got talking to Meryl Streep during a break in filming who then joined her in our home for a cup of tea and chat!
I am Waaaay behind watching your videos but had to see this one first. Great time of year for you to visit and the parade was a plus. The lady horse riders were lovely. Great job on this one.
I live in winterset! ive been to all the bridges, and actually worked at the covered bridge festival this year, Thank you for showing off our cool little town, and some of the historical aspects of it!
Thanks for a great video. I really enjoy watching your videos. You do a wonderful job of explaining the history of the area you are filming. We have a covered bridge about 30 miles from me in Bollinger County off Highway 34. It is called the Bollinger County Mill and covered bridge. It is on the historic list of places in Mo. Drive safe and God Bless
If you're looking to make another trip to Iowa, whether it be now or years from now, Pella, Iowa is famous for its Tulip Festival in spring. It is also like winterset in that it has quite a few sites to see for a small town. It's a town with a lot of Dutch history as well. @@TravelwithaWiseguy
Absolutely wonderful video this week! This is a place I've always wanted to visit in the fall. Moving it up on my list! Not sure I'd like driving over the spillway though!
Wonderful video bringing back memories of our trip in the 1980-90s (?) with friends in our motorcycle club, Yamaha Venture Touring Society, Missouri Chapter I. We also visited when there was a large hot air balloon festival nearby in Indianola Iowa. It’s usually in July each year. That might make an interesting video. 🤔
Thanks! I am from Chile and went for grad school to Iowa State University lived 7 years in Ames and never went to the bridges but wanted to…10 years after I graduated I am back in Ames…tomorrow my girls and I will go visit the bridges. Your video was of great help!
The Halliwell Bridge was named after my GGG grandparents George and Ann Halliwell. Their property was adjacent the the bridge. Ann brought the builders lunch durring the construction.
Interesting area. Saw a couple of covered bridges in my travels up in New Hampshire. Curious what the metal cylinder's hanging down from the rafters were in several of those bridges.
Well I've never seen the movie (or heard of it before today if I'm being honest), however I found your video very interesting. Why would you have a covered bridge? That perplexes me, bridges in my neck of the woods are stone block bridges or newer ones from the industrial revolution are brick and modern ones ugly steel and concrete but no covered ones. Perhaps you may know John, please put me out of my ignorance and do tell. Smashing video with lots of scenic views, thoroughly worth a watch. Thank you very much.
THE LAST “ BRIDGE” YOU CROSSED IS KNOWN AS A LOW WATER CROSSING! THE SQUARE BLOCKS ON THE DOWNSTREAM SIDE ARE THERE IN CASE THE WATER CURRENT COULD SHOVE YOU SIDEWAYS! WE USED TO HAVE SEVERAL IN OUR AREA, NOW REPLACED WITH STANDARD BRIDGES!

Excellent video, so interesting....nostalgic. Iowa is a very pretty state, still very laid back.
I really enjoyed exploring Iowa. More to come!
Thank you for taking my home movies for me. LOL, we did not take pictures while we were there in the 1990s. now I have one.
