Moved away from Thanet after 20 years recently. When I fist arrived in 2001 the talk was all about it being the next up and coming place. Then when the High-Speed rail was opened it looked like it would get the boost it needed. It never really happened so don't hold your breath. It is wonderful being by the sea and it's really not so bad as a place to live (there are low-lives in every town no matter how up-market), but everything is just much more drab in the winter.
I haven't been to Margate for many years. The last time I went there, Dreamland was still in operation! I remember Margate as the home of Hornby Model Railways. They issued a resin model of the clock tower you feature in this video as a Skaledale item. Thanks for uploading
I lived in Ramsgate for 15 years. Margate was bad then. The harbours in Ramsgate and Broadstairs were good for food & drinks plus live music. We left there nearly ten years ago for the Carmarthenshire countryside.
@@POSTIEPLAYSYou too fella. Anywhere along the M4 in Wales has gotten worse. Due to industry moving to China. There's a huge council estate called Cornelly between Bridgend and Port Talbot. All three towns are grim. Swansea is pretty grim too. Basically, anywhere in the South of Wales has been hit hard by closures.
I live in Ramsgate and have done for the last 15 years, I know why Margate has suffered in the past, this is because of it's large houses and hotels being converted to HMO's but Margate's future is looking good. I've seen their house price rise far quicker than other local areas, it's a place where in 15 years from now everyone will want to live.
Nothing will ever improve for one reason....Thanet District Council is *the* worst council in the country bar none. Corrupt, lazy and useless, year after year - Councillors and civil servants alike.
Making a correlation between polyamory and sexual crime rates is grossly misinformed and offers a very crude and damaging commentary. If you don't understand something, perhaps it's best just to leave it alone.
Why is it misinformed? All I said was that for a town with a larger population of polyamory than anywhere else in the UK I am genuinely surprised to see sexual crime rates one of the highest in the whole county. If a town has the highest the sexual crime rates in pretty much the whole country per capita and has the highest polyamory population per capita then bringing up this correlation is fair if there are no other statistics that provide a correlation to why sexual crime rates in this town are so high. Is it just coincidence? Is there another correlation we can share that could be why that type of crime is so high is this town? I agree I am uneducated on the subject but not sure how providing factual stats and asking the question to viewers if there is a link makes it crude or damaging but I apologise if you took it that way.
What a load of rubbish. Margate has 2 new 5 star hotels next to the derelict building on the seafront you feature, it's a creative hub, full of gorgeous restaurants, galleries and small independent shops.. What does it matter if it's the centre of polyamory, possibly because it's residents are more forward thinking and open minded? Many UK towns have a rough edge, even the most supposedly upmarket. Seems to me you were just looking for an angle, a weak one at that!
10 years ago 15 years ago maybe but not 2025. The houses went up in value the most in the country in the past five years and they’re still rising it still has its deprived areas and unfortunate people in life and luck but it’s definitely not the poorest.
Having lived in Margate for a few months in 1979 it was a slum then ,,,,I’m sure in the local ‘rag’ they were asking people from Liverpool to come and live there ,,,,but at least I did see Ian Dury and the Blockheads there and came out after deaf ,,,,,,,!!!
To condemn a place on one visit is a bit harsh . Yes Margate has its problems like anywhere else . But live there and get to know the place ........... It could be a lot worse
Sorry to hear that margate is on the decline it once was a great place to have a holiday in and was very popular let's it gets better in the near future
Grew up there in the 70s, junior school in Margit, senior school in Ramsgit, then Coventry polytechnic. Went back rarely & emigrated to Aus. From what I can tell, the Tories condemned the UK over decades with their tax cuts & favouring their big business mates whilst Brexit & Farage in particular, were the last nail in British industry. Lack of investment in public services & selling out to overseas interests led to London being the only place worth living & working, whilst retiring to the countyside is a must. A sad story with only a few, British owned shiny diamonds left in the industrial sector. Good luck y'all.
"A violent or sexual crime happens in Margate every 6-and-a-half-hours" - this is a stat from March 2019, it's now 2024, that's literally 5 years. A lot has changed in 5 years, lots of Londoners moving in and bringing in money - just it's creating a class clash, that's just what happens

All data is showing a trend of the town getting worse for crime at a faster rate of other towns in Kent. There are still plenty worse places though in the rest of the UK. #staysafe

My hometown lived in thanet nearly all my life Margate is definitely more run down now than ramsgate and broadstairs
Thanks for watching and commenting Victoria! Have a great week!
Agreed. My missus was in Ramsgate for nearly a decade before she ventured to Margate.
Same,Ramsgate is slighly above for the Harbour but now its out there sad😢
Lived there back in 2000 Clifton ville with Pete and eve son ben some fut english racist wankers 😂
Just like many places along the south coast, Margate is now home to many lefty london ex-pats. It's still a shit hole, though.

very doubtful. House price rises not make it a good area or somewhere people will want to live.

Margate has been "up and coming" for years. It's just that it has never quite come up.

Bognor Regis?
Dover
Telford
Jaywick
you have to also show ramsgate and broadstairs , margte town has gone down hill because of TDC who don't want to pay for anything but themselves.

The stat from December 2023 makes the picture look worse as it is over 6 crimes a day now.
