Yeah, I can also definitely see concord being used as an exercise in class, where students get 20 minutes to figure out what exactly went wrong with these designs and then pitch potential improvements
I think the original character designs are just fine. Gives me a guardians of the galaxy vibe. The issue with the game is the stale aesthetic (not character designs but overall aesthetic), bland copy of an over saturated genre, and odd political messaging that people don’t want in their games. The character designs are the least of the problems.
something i've noticed on the concord characters are half of them has this "sausage" aesthetic to them. doesn't matter if the character's fat, skinny or a robot. they all look like their armor has a hot dog aesthetic to them, like a long ass sausage has been draped over them.
Intestines. The wardrobe design is very intestinal, for some reason, usually something you see in bio-punk type designs to evoke body horror. Why the hell you’d use it for your characters in a scifi hero shooter is anyone’s guess.
This is the best redesign of concord creaters I have seen until now. You didn't completely overthrow the intention of the original artists, but rather expanded on it and executed it in the most interesting way possible. I would love to see you do this with all the characters!

Agreed. As frustrating as the original designs are, it's been painful seeing all the "I fixed the Concord designs" videos where people are just creating completely new characters. Where this video actually offers decent alternatives while keeping the original concepts recognisable.

To try and summarize the problems with the original designs: - Trying to have high-fidelity photorealistic character models with the design sense of a cartoon. It just doesn't work, it just all looks like cheap Halloween costumes for a cartoon no one's ever seen. - No design is willing to go the extra step to try and grab you, they're all quite literally padded and soft so as to not offend _anyone._ Zero style or swag. - Almost all the designs tell you little to nothing about the characters' personalities or movesets. For video games, visuals not only have to attract, but also _inform._
No stop , the cartoon design should looking cartoonish this has 0 cartoonish just some ugly people with some garbage high end padding you call clothes. This is just horrible not because of the art direction
Last one is the biggest problem imo. I don't see life in any of these characters, it's like I'm looking at concept arts. The robot looks like it's holding shit in its pants. Second one looks like she's struggling in her own armor. Third one is a discount version of Mr. Freeze, Mr. Powerwash. Last one has a bit of soul in it but he doesn't look like a mercenary/bounty hunter, bro looks like a retired mechanic.

As a game designer and 3D artist, Concord is a really fascinating case because I can practically feel the disconnect between the concept artists and character modellers. These 4 designs would work perfectly well as cartoony/stylized models à la Team Fortress 2, and just like with TF2's characters, they all look absolutely TERRIBLE when adapted to photorealistic visuals. Since Concord started development right around when Overwatch launched, they likely originally planned to use a similarly stylized aesthetic and initially designed the heroes with that in mind.
I saw someone mention the possibility of the game being planned to be cel shaded. The designs become atleast somewhat excusable if they had cel shading and were meant to mimic old comics or cartoons that had simple designs with not much detail to save money. The designs completely falling apart into atomic levels when some braindead executive decided he wanted it to look realistic makes a lot of sense.
Yeah, there is something really odd about the whole game, like its really well done in some ways but really well done wrong. Like they had some really good people doing some of the work and then some exceedingly incompetent people doing other parts and making the decisions. Oh, and like some people where deciding things based on other factors than what would make a good game. Like... someone worked hard to make the shadows and textures right, its really well done in some ways. Like there where people who knew how do it right in the team, but it just was not. Like, as far as I know, the game ran smoothly enough. The software itself worked fine, the models where rigged correctly, animated correctly, few bugs. Honestly, I think there where some really hard working talented programmers in there who probably kept their heads down and shut up because they did not want to looser their jobs and be called bigots.
Man, YOUR EMARI LOOKS AWESOME, just taking off the little flag and turning into some kind o roman helmet makes me want to play as her and her asymmetric arms with the big one having the shield and the less armoured being the one that's mainly carrying the gun JUST FROM A ROUGH SKETCH. Honestly, this make me look at the characters i draw and makes me think of whats missing from a storytelling point. Great video dude.

keep in mind improving on existing designs is easier than conceptualizing completely knew designs, but yeah 8 years is insane to settle on those designs...

It's not just that it stuck with photorealism, but also that they did so while trying to have the design sense of a cartoon. It just doesn't work, you can't keep your cake and eat it too. All the clothing textures look like they're made of untouched rubber, plastic, or polyester. It reminds me of those Skyrim and Fallout mods that add outfits based on anime or cartoons, but they left the textures either completely flat or use a painfully obvious repeating pattern.
@@humrH2360 yep true that, looks like a very low budget costumea for a movie, and the fact they had a funding of 8 millions makes me questioning their work ethics, because with that amount of money backing you up, you need to lock the hell in and go all out in your designs, make the alien more "Alien", don't make them like a man in makeup or costumes. Make it more sci-fi, make the guns more high-tech, make the map more "out of this world", make it something, anything...i think i went overboard here😅😅😅
@@r3dh0ll0w8 The budget was waaaay more than that, I've been hearing anywhere between 100-300 million. AND it had a whole *_8 years_* of development time. Taking those into account, the sheer scale of failure this game achieved is even more baffling. So if anything, you didn't go overboard, you're still going underboard. I was talking about this game's failure with my brother-in-law, who previously owned a successful small business and sold for a good price, and consulted for other businesses, and he was absolutely flabbergasted. By every metric, it is an even bigger failure than the E.T. game, which is often attributed as one of the main causes of the video game crash of '83. He's become convinced that Concord has to be either an embezzlement scheme or a money laundering operation.

I've seen a few Concord redesign videos now. I appreciate that your approach was to take the existing characters and alter them in a way that retains a lot of the original concept, because there are way too many of these redesign videos where the thought process is just "let's make everyone supermodel attractive."

A bit overdesigned, and imo needs a bit of a details cleanup, but holy shit you improved them about x100 times. They all have something unique about them now and their design is communicative of what they are.
the official designers must have never heard of the silhouette test. 3 of the 4 in silhouette look identical and there suppose to be a robot, ork? , and discount space marine
I love it! You've shown us that we don't need sex appeal in order for people to want to play those characters. And I WANT to play these characters now. They all look so COOL!

To me, Concord's character designs look bad for the same reason most live-action anime adaptations look bad. They've taken designs that would work great in a campy sci-fi comic (like old Guardians of The Galaxy) and tried to make them photorealistic.
Absolutely. I feel Lennox is the best example of this. He looks exactly like a guy in makeup rather than an alien space lizard which could look so cool.
Nah, not even there, these look like extras in a sci fi movie, in any case they should have gone all the way and add some slighly modified normal stuff to them, like them being actors of a low budget series, for examole someone having a gun that you could tell is actually a hair dryer. or guys with makeup that shows normal color skin at some points, and stuff like that.
A character designs can have a missing eye, a scarred face, or maybe prosthetic limbs, but only a good character design will invoke a story behind it when people looked at it. I think that's the problem with the og design, people seeing the design would only be confused, the design just don't make sense.
Oooof, the third character's transformation is insane. I mean, all of them are nice, but the third one is especially so : ) For me, it literally went from total disgust to "I not only want to play this character, but I don't mind buying some skins" ^^
Feel like a good personality for Emari would be something like the Bulldozers from Payday. Instead of "I got you" said so lamely. Would have been way cooler if she leaned way more into her Tankyness with a bit more Ham. "You're up against the Wall, And I am the F***ing Wall!"
Make more! I really like how you stay consist with the intended design of the character but also improve on it to appeal to the general audience. Hero shooters is just like fighting games and MOBA you have to sell the characters. You earn a subscriber.
I really love your redesigns! You immediately added so much more personality to all the characters, especially Emari and Daveers! I haven't watched any cutscenes or trailers with the characters but I wouldn't be able to tell you how any of them acted in their original designs but yours actually gives me an idea of the characters's morals and personality and I love it!!!
Your redesigns are very cool. I have to comment on one small thing that you did for each one of them that improved the design so dramatically that I was stunned. Making the robots 'eye' into a emote screen. Brilliant! Changing the little flag on the back of the power armor lady into a top knot on a knight style helmet. That adds so much character and would make for something visually interesting in game with that flying around. Increasing the length of the black gloves on the chemist lady. This one is shocking because once I saw it, it's so obvious that the chemist lady needs giant chemist gloves! How did they miss that one when they originally designed this character. And finally on Starchild, I have seen a couple other people tackle trying to make this character look better... and adding the red crystals on his chest is THE answer on how to make his red face actually fit with a design.
Thanks for explaining the process, too. You can tell a lot of the original designs went through a committee except "no" or "back to the drawing board" weren't allowed to be said.
I really really like the new design for 1-0FF, I think that was the Most disappointing character for me, because I mean how do you mess up the robot 😭 The addition of the emote screen was really cute. He's more friend shaped now :D

Good job with the redesigns. If I may add my tweaks to your Daveers changes: She deals with toxic chemicals. Make her helmet cylindrical, like most A-level hazmat suits. Instead of a double-barrelled grenade launcher, think 2-part epoxy. Each barrel fires a chemical, when mixed becomes her toxic slime thing. Instant war-crime. This could also double as her FU death AoE, as her storage tanks rupture.
Thank you for making a redesign manually and not just throwing the characters into an AI to see what it pukes out. And in fact, this is actually fixing the designs. It's keeping the core elements, of each. As your retouches show that it wasn't just a matter of making characters sexy, but straight up goofy while using photorealistic graphics. These two things do not mix at all. I am a full weeb, I play Nikke and Snowbreak, dumping way too much on both to admit. But your Emari design is so good! She looks like she came straigh out of WH40k.

I really like these redesigns. Most of the ones I’ve seen online just completely redo the characters and make them lose what they had going for them initially.
The amount of content I've seen of this game and it doesn't even involve gameplay, has outlasted the life span of the game itself, and it's always just redesigns of the characters lmao
If the original character designs looked badass in the first place I feel like the “wokeness” message would’ve stuck more with people in a good way. Kinda like the original Metroid when people found out that Samus was a girl and not a guy. If the characters were cool then people would care more, but no, in Concord they all look completely ridiculous. It’s pretty hard to take whatever message they’re saying seriously when they all look super lame. Anyways, great job with your redesigns. They look amazing.
They thought they were so clever subverting the "male gaze", the normal conventions of characters designs, common sense, etc, that they went full concord, and everyone knows you never go full concord
saw the first character redesigned, instantly know that this is going to be amazing, your idea on communicating what each characters do or their skill set and abilities is amazing, they have more flare and taste to it (sorry, idk how to express this, but ultimately they all look 10000x better than the originals). great job!
When I was younger and more stupid than I'm now, I though, the more realistics a game has, the better their quality... Thankfully I've grown out of that phase years ago... Realistic grafics can totally ruin your game when you try to go for over the top design, while still trying to be grounded and naturalistic and fitting into your environment. As video game characters, they are way too boring. As movie characters, they are too goofy. There isnt much margin to maneuver if you try both... They aimed for gritty, realistic aestethics, the characters have blunt colors because they are covered in dust. They are battle worn adventurers and survivors, they are poor, they arent flashy. Their armor and clothes are designed for practicality only, they simply dont have the need or desire to wear something fancy - they are focused to that job done, and the next, and the next and so on, barey getting by... At least, I suppose the devs went with a scenerio similar to this. It makes for an interesting concept and certainly interesting stories... but it looks boring, its not appealing. People wont give it a try because its simply TOO realistic.
Wow your Daveers is so insanely much better. Well done. That's actually a scary character after you are done with it. I agree with the spikes/horns/etc on Star Child as well. That character should have been a Hellboy/Doomsday hybrid if that's what they went with.

Tbh the best redesign of Emari I have seen so far. I like you how you stuck to idea of "Big armored soldier" that i feel like is vital to this character. Just wish you made shield the same color as the helmet visor ^^
Concord has opened my ideas regarding the "femininity" of female characters. Companies and projects like this seem to want to HIDE that their characters are women, as if they're ashamed somehow. Or, like you said, afraid of boobs XD. It's childish at best and sexist at worst, if you think about it.
They tend to like ""make a woke game"" (I fucking hate the word woke lol) or to show a strong woman, they remove what is considered feminine, as if being feminine is considered being weak or sexualized. Women can be strong and feminine, women can have a big lead role and still embracing their femininity
I like that they aimed for androgny, it makes less cookie cutter designs. What they really needed was to make it a lot more clear what each character's actual purpose/role is.

Ohh the dude was made of diamond? Nothing about him says that! I always thought the blue guy best exemplified how poor their design was. A big muscular dude with a red face and blue body, in theory you would be wondering why he is like that, did he get dipped in some coolers like mr. freeze or something? But he just don't. Nothing awakes your imagination, he is just some blue dude with a red face for some reason. And the lizard guy? Can't tell he is a lizard, he looks like the a green dude (who look oddly like the star lord daddy) with a skin disease.
I think one of my biggest problems with the Concord character designs is just how basic and put together they all look. None of the characters look like they're mercenaries, they all look like they just walked off some futuristic job site and happened into a battle. Where is the punk? The outfits scrounged together from random old armor? None of the characters look like they personalized their outfits, so none of them have any obvious character from their outfits alone. I wish they all looked a little more dingy and DIY, like something from Mad Max or Borderlands, rather than the bland outfits we got, where even the asymmetry seems planned.
I think your redesigns absolutely make the characters look interesting, but honestly, I think a main problem of the characters is the use of color. For example, the green tank has a minuscule amount of purple just at the top, and NOWHERE else to complement/frame the character. 1-Off is COMPLETELY yellow all over, aside from one leg panel which is just gray😂 But your changes definitely fixed the core issues I think
Daveers isn’t a woman? They’re non binary lol? It’s on their ability sheet, they/them pronouns. Love the designs, 1-OFF especially, looks sick as hell. I like the change to give daveers a chest though, it’s nice to see non binary characters that aren’t androgynous, like I know at least three they/thems with big chests and another two with the other style of package. I miss the box, but i think I’m the only one who likes it XD it gives them a ‘im a crazy cool scientist but I get 0 funding. Watch me blow you up with kitchen supplies’ vibe Star child looks so cool, I’m definitely gonna be taking some inspiration when I make my own designs

It's not just that it stuck with photorealism, but also that they did so while trying to have the design sense of a cartoon. It just doesn't work, you can't keep your cake and eat it too. All the clothing textures look like they're made of untouched rubber, plastic, or polyester. It reminds me of those Skyrim and Fallout mods that add outfits based on anime or cartoons, but they left the textures either completely flat or use a painfully obvious repeating pattern.
@@humrH2360 yep true that, looks like a very low budget costumea for a movie, and the fact they had a funding of 8 millions makes me questioning their work ethics, because with that amount of money backing you up, you need to lock the hell in and go all out in your designs, make the alien more "Alien", don't make them like a man in makeup or costumes. Make it more sci-fi, make the guns more high-tech, make the map more "out of this world", make it something, anything...i think i went overboard here😅😅😅
@@r3dh0ll0w8 The budget was waaaay more than that, I've been hearing anywhere between 100-300 million. AND it had a whole *_8 years_* of development time. Taking those into account, the sheer scale of failure this game achieved is even more baffling. So if anything, you didn't go overboard, you're still going underboard.
I was talking about this game's failure with my brother-in-law, who previously owned a successful small business and sold for a good price, and consulted for other businesses, and he was absolutely flabbergasted. By every metric, it is an even bigger failure than the E.T. game, which is often attributed as one of the main causes of the video game crash of '83. He's become convinced that Concord has to be either an embezzlement scheme or a money laundering operation.

I've seen a few Concord redesign videos now. I appreciate that your approach was to take the existing characters and alter them in a way that retains a lot of the original concept, because there are way too many of these redesign videos where the thought process is just "let's make everyone supermodel attractive."

A bit overdesigned, and imo needs a bit of a details cleanup, but holy shit you improved them about x100 times. They all have something unique about them now and their design is communicative of what they are.

To me, Concord's character designs look bad for the same reason most live-action anime adaptations look bad. They've taken designs that would work great in a campy sci-fi comic (like old Guardians of The Galaxy) and tried to make them photorealistic.

Nah, not even there, these look like extras in a sci fi movie, in any case they should have gone all the way and add some slighly modified normal stuff to them, like them being actors of a low budget series, for examole someone having a gun that you could tell is actually a hair dryer. or guys with makeup that shows normal color skin at some points, and stuff like that.
A character designs can have a missing eye, a scarred face, or maybe prosthetic limbs, but only a good character design will invoke a story behind it when people looked at it. I think that's the problem with the og design, people seeing the design would only be confused, the design just don't make sense.

Make more! I really like how you stay consist with the intended design of the character but also improve on it to appeal to the general audience. Hero shooters is just like fighting games and MOBA you have to sell the characters. You earn a subscriber.
I really love your redesigns! You immediately added so much more personality to all the characters, especially Emari and Daveers! I haven't watched any cutscenes or trailers with the characters but I wouldn't be able to tell you how any of them acted in their original designs but yours actually gives me an idea of the characters's morals and personality and I love it!!!

I have to comment on one small thing that you did for each one of them that improved the design so dramatically that I was stunned.
Making the robots 'eye' into a emote screen. Brilliant!
Changing the little flag on the back of the power armor lady into a top knot on a knight style helmet. That adds so much character and would make for something visually interesting in game with that flying around.
Increasing the length of the black gloves on the chemist lady. This one is shocking because once I saw it, it's so obvious that the chemist lady needs giant chemist gloves! How did they miss that one when they originally designed this character.
And finally on Starchild, I have seen a couple other people tackle trying to make this character look better... and adding the red crystals on his chest is THE answer on how to make his red face actually fit with a design.
I really love the redesign of 1-off (terrible name), but that caution tape edging was chef's kiss! ❤
Thanks for explaining the process, too. You can tell a lot of the original designs went through a committee except "no" or "back to the drawing board" weren't allowed to be said.

If I may add my tweaks to your Daveers changes:
She deals with toxic chemicals. Make her helmet cylindrical, like most A-level hazmat suits.
Instead of a double-barrelled grenade launcher, think 2-part epoxy. Each barrel fires a chemical, when mixed becomes her toxic slime thing. Instant war-crime. This could also double as her FU death AoE, as her storage tanks rupture.
Thank you for making a redesign manually and not just throwing the characters into an AI to see what it pukes out. And in fact, this is actually fixing the designs. It's keeping the core elements, of each. As your retouches show that it wasn't just a matter of making characters sexy, but straight up goofy while using photorealistic graphics. These two things do not mix at all.

I really like these redesigns. Most of the ones I’ve seen online just completely redo the characters and make them lose what they had going for them initially.
I like that you turned Amari from the Michelin Man to something similar to Spartan soldier from Halo like Jorge.
The amount of content I've seen of this game and it doesn't even involve gameplay, has outlasted the life span of the game itself, and it's always just redesigns of the characters lmao
If the original character designs looked badass in the first place I feel like the “wokeness” message would’ve stuck more with people in a good way. Kinda like the original Metroid when people found out that Samus was a girl and not a guy. If the characters were cool then people would care more, but no, in Concord they all look completely ridiculous. It’s pretty hard to take whatever message they’re saying seriously when they all look super lame.
Anyways, great job with your redesigns. They look amazing.

When I was younger and more stupid than I'm now, I though, the more realistics a game has, the better their quality... Thankfully I've grown out of that phase years ago... Realistic grafics can totally ruin your game when you try to go for over the top design, while still trying to be grounded and naturalistic and fitting into your environment. As video game characters, they are way too boring. As movie characters, they are too goofy. There isnt much margin to maneuver if you try both... They aimed for gritty, realistic aestethics, the characters have blunt colors because they are covered in dust. They are battle worn adventurers and survivors, they are poor, they arent flashy. Their armor and clothes are designed for practicality only, they simply dont have the need or desire to wear something fancy - they are focused to that job done, and the next, and the next and so on, barey getting by...
At least, I suppose the devs went with a scenerio similar to this. It makes for an interesting concept and certainly interesting stories... but it looks boring, its not appealing. People wont give it a try because its simply TOO realistic.

I agree with the spikes/horns/etc on Star Child as well. That character should have been a Hellboy/Doomsday hybrid if that's what they went with.

Tbh the best redesign of Emari I have seen so far. I like you how you stuck to idea of "Big armored soldier" that i feel like is vital to this character. Just wish you made shield the same color as the helmet visor ^^
Concord has opened my ideas regarding the "femininity" of female characters. Companies and projects like this seem to want to HIDE that their characters are women, as if they're ashamed somehow. Or, like you said, afraid of boobs XD. It's childish at best and sexist at worst, if you think about it.
They tend to like ""make a woke game"" (I fucking hate the word woke lol) or to show a strong woman, they remove what is considered feminine, as if being feminine is considered being weak or sexualized. Women can be strong and feminine, women can have a big lead role and still embracing their femininity
I like that they aimed for androgny, it makes less cookie cutter designs. What they really needed was to make it a lot more clear what each character's actual purpose/role is.

Ohh the dude was made of diamond? Nothing about him says that! I always thought the blue guy best exemplified how poor their design was. A big muscular dude with a red face and blue body, in theory you would be wondering why he is like that, did he get dipped in some coolers like mr. freeze or something? But he just don't. Nothing awakes your imagination, he is just some blue dude with a red face for some reason. And the lizard guy? Can't tell he is a lizard, he looks like the a green dude (who look oddly like the star lord daddy) with a skin disease.

I think one of my biggest problems with the Concord character designs is just how basic and put together they all look. None of the characters look like they're mercenaries, they all look like they just walked off some futuristic job site and happened into a battle. Where is the punk? The outfits scrounged together from random old armor? None of the characters look like they personalized their outfits, so none of them have any obvious character from their outfits alone. I wish they all looked a little more dingy and DIY, like something from Mad Max or Borderlands, rather than the bland outfits we got, where even the asymmetry seems planned.

I think your redesigns absolutely make the characters look interesting, but honestly, I think a main problem of the characters is the use of color. For example, the green tank has a minuscule amount of purple just at the top, and NOWHERE else to complement/frame the character. 1-Off is COMPLETELY yellow all over, aside from one leg panel which is just gray😂 But your changes definitely fixed the core issues I think

Love the designs, 1-OFF especially, looks sick as hell. Bruh, original Star child look's like walmart Thanos, or some cheep toy. And your Star child look's like a character, that i actually want to play on. Another problem is "Star child" is the most boring name I've ever heard. It's bad naming and bad design.
Also i personally want him to be a melee fighter, like wtf, bro, you have DIAMOND SKIN. In game Paladins (also a hero shooter) there is a big guy made from rock with big damn axe and it's really scary, when he is running to you, like if mountain had a big damn axe and being able to run.
