      Peranakan was a Chinese migrant who come into the tanah melayu (previous name for Malaysia) and assimilate themselves into malays culture...you could say that they had come here earlier before british imported contract workers from china and they got their own food and traditions which is resulted from malay-chinese assimilation

    Yesssss to peranakan cuisine! As a peranakan from Malacca myself (living in Australia now) this video is making me miss home. That babi pongteh & udang masak lemak nenas looks super legit! If you happen to dine in another peranakan restaurant do try ‘itek tim’ (salted mustard duck soup). It’s a salty+sour duck broth cooked with tamarind slices (some add sour plum), ginger etc. Definitely goes well with pongteh & udang masak lemak nenas.
    As for nyonya dumplings we also have ‘kueh chang abu’ which is a plain dumpling made with alkaline water and is yellow in colour. We usually eat this with gula melaka (some use kaya)
    Nyonya cuisine is very laborious. The prep time is just insane. Back in the good old days people really led very simple lives with minimal distractions and have plenty of time for prep! Peranakans are also known to be a very fussy lot. I call it high standards. Why aim for mediocrity when you can strive for perfection? ;)

    • @Macoi24
      @Macoi24  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha I feel like "Our Place" describes the Nyonya cuisine you just mentioned! Very high standard! Okay first time hearing about "itek tim" so I will look for it next time!

    I’ve been watching a lot of foreigners eating Malaysian food TH-cam videos. I’m glad it’s finally time that Malaysian food is getting recognized for being one of the best in the world. Some of it may be cheap (like hawker food), but that doesn’t mean it is not great food. Thanks for doing these videos, Max, and for promoting Malaysian cuisine. I also like the way you eat Malaysian food, like a local.

    Hello again Max. So hot today here in England. It has been many years ago when I was in Malaysia and love the food. I am semi retired now and after graduating I decided to travel around the world with 5 of my very good friends. We do not have you tube then and camera not like what we have today. I decided to learned how to cook all the different cuisine that I so thoroughly enjoyed that many years ago. I am indeed very impressed with your video, the way you describe the food and the way you just say it all out loud, I feel I am there with you, seeing the world again. I had been there and done it all. If I am your mother I am so very proud of you. You take care, stay safe and enjoy every moments.

    Just subscribed. Why? I think your commentary is the best compared to the other food bloggers on TH-cam. I really appreciate you pronouncing the name and ingredients of the food by their local names. Your descriptions of the food looks genuine and the most important thing, you take your time to enjoy the food and don’t look rushed. Some other food bloggers they look rushing to taste and comment and eat the food it doesn’t appear to be an honest review.

    If you haven't already, you should try Ayam Buah Keluak. Buah Keluak is a kind of nut and in this dish they take out the flesh of the nuts, cook it with a bunch of other delicious ingredients and stuffed back into the nut before cooking it in a curry. One of my fave peranakan dishes.

    Thank you so much for your review of Malacca's Peranakan food scene - that's the stuff folks come from afar to try. KL-lites and Singaporeans go quite mad for our food!
    So chuffed you included Aunty Susan from Our Place; her home-style cooking is really one of those hidden off-the-beaten-track places, and I'm so blessed to count hers as one of our "local" places. She's so cheerful and down to earth, loved by her customers and former students (did she mention she was an ex school teacher??).
    For our festival days, it's great we can ask Aunty Susan what special dishes she makes, and whether she'd put on those once-a-year dishes that even us locals know are harder to come by. You must make a return trip, or be sure to try "Ayam Buah Keluak" or "Babi Keluak" - made with the "cyanide nut" as I'd like to call it. Don't worry, this dark, brown nut - like a misshapened golf ball - undergoes a special preparation by burying it in mud, then it's scrubbed & cleaned thoroughly, boiled separately and then finally added to the simmering "stew". It's like the blowfish (fugu) challenge in Japan - you can say you ate "buah keluak" and lived to tell the tale! The taste is incredibly rich, deep and almost chocolatey which really reminds me of mole sauce. Some say it's an acquired taste, but I think your palate would love this, as you love all things Malaysian. BTW, Aunty Susan makes the yummiest version I've tried - her gravy has a hint of assam (tamarind) which helps balance the richness of the dish, leaving it flavoursome but not cloying. Her balance in the dish is just on-point and contrasts beautifully with the aromatic herbs used in her creation. If a dish is far too unctuous and heavy, we call "too lemak", the Malay word for "rich, oily or creamy" - that would leave one feeling quite bloated and queasy after indulging in that!
    PS: Love the drone shots of Malacca too - great footage!

    • @Macoi24
      @Macoi24  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Susan is amazing! So happy I got to meet her and one of the best Peranakan meals I had in Malacca! Got a lot more to come, I get full just thinking about these next couple videos!

    Hi Max, so glad you got to experience and taste delicious Peranakan cuisine. Peranakan or Nonya cuisine describes the early Chinese immigrants to SEA who settled in Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Indonesia during the 1700s to mid 1800s from southern China, primarily from Fujian, Chaozhou (Teochow) and Guangzhou provinces. These early Chinese settlers intermarried with local Malays and adopted the local Malay culture/cuisine and ingredients to their own Chinese cooking to create a unique blend/fusion known as Peranakan or Nonya cuisine. It combines Chinese, Malay and other influences (i.e. Indian). You will not find it anywhere else in the world, and if you do, it will not taste as good as where you are now due to availability and freshness of local ingredients. Enjoy while you can, it's a real treat!

    • @Macoi24
      @Macoi24  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But since this is Melaka, the Peranakan cuisine can also have Portuguese influence, right? Thanks this is an epic comment!

    • @bukitkatilmp

      Yes Peranakan in Malacca is unique compared with those in Penang and Singapore because the Malacca one has a more comprehensive mix of flavours, possibly Portuguese and Chitty Malacca as well.

    Peranakan and Nyonya (Nonya) can be loosely interchanged, I think. Generally refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage, but there also non-Chinese Peranakans. Ancestors I think are early Chinese immigrants who settled in the Straits Settlement. I'm Peranakan but unfortunately not traditional as my grandparents on both sides passed on before I really got to know them, and my parents aren't traditional either! Biggest regret is not having any family recipes passed down from the grandmothers.
    Cuisine-wise, like what you've eaten, Peranakan cuisine is quite heavy influenced by Malay and Indonesian cuisines. Loads of rempah and coconut, and there's always some type of sambal around. There are many good Nonya restaurants in Melaka, although the more popular ones usually get busloads of tourists. I've not tried the one you went to, I shall try it out when I'm next in Melaka!
    I'm surprised you didn't have any Nonya kuehs - most people enjoy the sweet kuehs but we have some nice savoury ones as well! You should try Baba Charlie the next time you're in Melaka - some of the best kuehs (Ondeh Ondeh!) I've had and we don't really have great kuehs nowadays in Singapore. Since you love gula melaka, you should also try Putu Piring (steamed rice flour cakes with gula melaka and desiccated coconut). I noticed that you prolly stayed in the Laksamana area? Baba Charlie and the Putu Piring place are somewhat nearby. I think you could prolly cycle from Laksamana to the Putu Piring place, but Baba Charlie's a fair bit further down. Both are along Tengkera, one's at Lorong Tengkera and the other's at Jalan Tengkera I believe. There's a cream puff chain that has a pretty bomb durian cream puff. It's pretty darn great on a hot day. They have a few joints, I think in the malls and there's one at Jonker Street as well.
    The wonderful thing about eating cendol in Malaysia is that the more traditional spots make their own ingredients from scratch. Like boiling down the gula melaka till it's nice and syrup. Making the green jelly with pandan. Some places also process their own coconut milk! There's a famous cendol spot where I believe the lady does harvests and processes her own coconuts for the cendol. It's way out though, I think she only opens on weekends, and the queues are always looooooong.
    I wonder if your Melakan series comprises of a few episodes like the JB one as well? Would be nice to feature the Melakan architecture, with the Dutch, British and Portuguese influences.

    • @Macoi24
      @Macoi24  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baba Charlie coming in one of my next videos! It was closed becuase I filmed this video on a thursday! Hmmm< I ended up going to I think 4 Peranakan restaurants in Melaka so shoot me a message on Instagram or an email and I can let you know which I felt like was best. Hhahahaha and I have Auntie Koh's cendol in next video too. I didn't do much of the history or anything for my videos. Was too busy eating😅but looking back I wish I would have talked more about the architecture and actual history of the city. Just didn't feel like I knew it well enough at that point to talk intelligently about it.

    i think generally from little that i know, peranakan cuisine is the combination of the style of malay cooking with the spices of chinese . so this makes it very unique in its own. that is why you can see the technique of traditional malay food with mixed in ingredient from chinese cuisine. Anyone knows better please add in the info here ^^. sorry for my lack of knowledge.

    Max, in Peranakan cuisine, the dishes made with Buak Keluak is a mainstay - try either ayam (chicken) or babi (pork) buah keluak. The fruit, buah keluak, in its raw form contains cyanide and must be cured using traditional techniques for 5 days prior to cooking. Once cooked the dish can only be described as a savory chocolate fruit.
    Must try! It’s getting harder to find as the techniques are being lost and younger generations lack the patience.
    Love the videos and how you dive into the whole culture, via its cuisine. Keep it going.
