It's incredible that so many of these bulldogs have been just sitting around unstarted for 40 to 70 years just so we can watch their first start in x10 years.
I believe these are supposed to idle at around 250RPM and have a top engine speed of around 650RPM. Well running and well adjusted engines sound much smoother. I hope this one gets some more work done on it.
exactly, it runs at a much higher speed then its supposed to, at the beginning i believe there was even some fuel standing in the hotbulb which makes the tractor pretty much uncontrollable , crankshafts and flywheels can even break under these high rpm .this can also happenif the engine nurns oil, this is usually even worse. when they put the screw out of the hot bulb there was also quiet a bit of fuel coming out of it and it was not getting better but still they put it back in. after the start they let it idle at a very high speed aswell but that was ok. here you can see what can happen to a lanzbulldog under such high rpm´s : th-cam.com/users/shortslOjTzZPTR_8?feature=share i think in this case the flywheel broke
You be careful starting that Lanz with those spoked wheels my friends. Those killed and maimed quite a few farmers and workers back in the day. Lanz eventually did not supply those wheels, instead there were solid aluminium discs provided instead. When you get the hang of it, in 20C - 30C climate you can have a Lanz started in less than 15 minutes easily. Also, rock the engine against compression both directions, fuel will be introduced at both extremes. If it starts backwards you can with a little bit of practice make it run the proper direction by some skillful use of the primiing/interruptor lever.
exactly my thoughts, i would also immediately make a closed alu disc instead of these spoked wheels....I nearly broke my shin in kickstarting a Honda XR600r abck in the days ....very very powerfull thrust .!
I was replying to reem von braun but TH-cam's comment system is utter arse and I momentarily forgot that. He's the one suggesting a new flywheel while you and I both agree that being careful not to stick any body parts in the spokes is sufficient.
alabamaramma When set up correctly, one person can start it. This engine is not running correctly, it should not be this hard to kick over. Keep in mind, technology has improved quite a bit. Before electric starters, thermostarters and metered injection, we had this. May have been harder to start, but they always did. No dead batteries.

That looked a bit scary. No one kind of knew what they should really do. Then suddenly after flywheel flicks failed to start it there's a jump in the video events and the thing is running, trying to rev up wildly and there's a shredded up belt ... or something and then the shed files with exhaust.... hmmmmmm.
Brenner manual operating on oil The engine was powered by gasoline An electrical system that produces sparks should also be avoided But today the quality of fuel allows direct operation in diesel mode
Yes - a real hassle to start the german lanz bulldog. The source of the flame was a kerosene blowtorch in early times. Had to be pumped up like Coleman camp stoves.
I've watched these engines started at our local old machinery club and they do it very simply and quite quickly compared to these guys who really didn't seem to have a clue what they are up to.
Congratulations to this beautiful machine, looks great, well done, do you have some pictures of the restoration? , fantastic :-) Best regards from the Black Forest
Good job, but on first sight something might be wrong with the injection or governor. It runs a bit irregular and speeds up to very high rpm (spontaneously?)
Schöne Raupe! Nur das gehampel verstehe ich nicht, Angst vor der Maschine? Als Mann sollte man den Motor alleine starten können, alles andere gibt verrissene Hosen...
Yeah maybe, but the optional bolt on farm implements for space shuttles are hard to come by these days. Plus, the space shuttle was never considered a good platform for using as a dozer OR a grader.
They didn't have electric starters back when it was built. Engines were either cranked by hand using hand wheels or handles. Others would use a small gas motor known as a pony motor too spin the flywheel.
God bless Israel, this machine too, is that torch heating up a glow-plug or something? Sounds like a gasoline engine, but it must be a 2-stroke or have a strange valve arrangement, I'd love to see one apart!
@@andy16666 true lower compression and a big pile of heat to start combustion. Its fair to say that hot bulbs are the predecessor of diesels. II suppose they'll run on pretty much anything.
@@Savagetechie Yep. Similar concept, but fairly different in practice. Combustion isn't timed by injection, and most of the heat of ignition comes from the previous cycle, not from compression.
So nobody ever told them about starter fuses. A piece of cotton rope or paper saturated with Ammonium nitrate, that acts like a glow plug for starting old semi-diesels. It goes into the end of the plug in the cylinder head. You don't even need to light it, the compression self ignites it. maybe the rough Sound is because of that flap?

Eh,. as long as they keep their burger hooks out of the spokes they'll be fine. No need to replace the flywheel when respecting it will do.
Well. I think my "you be careful" just about covered that. The spoked wheel was a poor system though.

You can appreciate that farmers, once they started the tractor, left it running all day. They burned any fuel, so we're cheap to run.

Why were they heating it with a flamethrower?
The origin of "light a fire under his ass" to make someone work.

After the bush fires went through all the bulldogs started up
Next time rock the flywheel back and forth to draw in fuel will make it start much easier two stroke diesel motors are finicky 😉

You don't need such a big flame for pre-heating. I don't think that long time damage is a problem but you waste gas.
German quality. Still usable after 70 years of just standing around.

White Tee shirt is messing with the fuel nozzle cone angle control knob and the fan belt broke early. Rocking is the secret to starting these engines.

why did you have to put a tourch to the front of machine????????
In diesel engines of 1930
There was no electrical heating system
Heating the head of the engine is done with open fire
