Bauhaus since I was 13 years old in 1988.
bauhaus are really cool, i went to uni in the town they're from
Killing Joke, New Model Army, Siouxsie and The Wipers. Can’t decide. Depends on the day
I absolutely love post punk and goth, tropic of cancer and the soft moon are my favorites! Great video, really nice chorus sounds.
two awesome genres, will have to cover some goth stuff soon :)
@@pedalpartners also, ethereal wave, bands like Autumn's grey solace or love spirals downwards
The Soft Moonnnnn
the soft moon :(((@@noxsolarium4611
I’d say my favorite post punk band is Siouxsie and the Banshees. As much as I adore the cure, particularly disintegration, I think Siouxsie and the banshees really embodied the genre and sound the best. Their work in the late seventies and early eighties established something of a prototype for what would become shoegaze and clearly inspired bands like Cocteau Twins (garland is really inspired by them and Head Over Heels is amazing as it’s a mixture of post punk and shoegaze, literally 50/50 of each). Juju is an absolute masterclass in post punk/goth, spellbound is the definitive post punk track.
Joy Division and The Cure are my other two favorite post punk bands.
In regards to the sound, I’d say nab a Roland JC style amp, doesn’t have to be the jc120, the jc40 is much more reasonably sized and is still fucking loud. Distortion, overdrive and fuzz were dialed way back for post punk and even new wave music. I think post punk was much more melodic and didn’t rely on guitar solos or fat fuzzy guitar tones that were famous in the seventies. Instead a more ethereal approach was taken and modulation such as chorus, flange and vibrato were more widely used. Analog, tape, and digital delay were also heavily used.
From my experience, without breaking the bank from buying another amp, nab a used boss bf-2, the cure and the smiths I believe had both used the bf-2 as I’m sure other post punk guitarists had. It’s a flanger but is also capable of chorus, really a Swiss Army knife of a pedal. The boss ce-2w would also be ideal as most post punk groups used chorus/vibrato or flange. You won’t get the swooshing of a flanger, but the chorus tones are really lush and beautiful, and instantly help dial in the post punk tone. Next I’d say nab a good analog, tape or digital delay. It varies regarding what era of post punk or band you enjoy and wish to help emulate or get in the ballpark of. A deluxe memory man style analog delay like the recent EHX reissue, UA starlight which has the dmm, Echoplex and 2290 digital delay would be a great addition. The boss dm-2w is also great for a bauhaus ish post punk echo. For tape echo the boss Re-20 or Re-202/2 work great for post punk. A used boss dd-3 would also be a good addition as those were introduced during the era and used by Robert Smith and Johnny Marr (the dd-2 at least).
Lastly distortion really wasn’t widely used but some tracks do use a touch of grit. Really all that was even available at the time were tube screamer clones. Boss sd-1, Ibanez ts9 or ts808 would do. A good compressor pairs well with modulation, like the mxr Dyna comp or Xotic sp comp or Keeley comp.
Twin Tribes is my favorite right now.
The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Cocteau Twins are definitely my top 3 of the og post punk artists
Goth to the bone 🦴….now and forevermore 🖤… our music isn’t going anywhere… it’s kind of like in the labyrinth… it’s there when you NEED it
Hope you guys had a good xmas! I got a good mandala tapestry and space projector for my jam space. Ive had a hard time getting in the mood to jam so some good visual stimuli is perfect!
we did thanks, hope you did too! that sounds sick. have an awesome 2023 my good friend! ✌💗
The Sisters of Mercy. I don't use Instagram, and can't enter the contest, but I love your channel. Good luck to the rest of you!
thanks for watching! :)
The Cure is my favorite band! Seventeen Seconds, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish, and Wild Moon Swings are in my top albums ever, with Head on the Door as an honorable mention.
Joy Division's (my all-time favorite band) beats were also some of the most original you can hear anywhere
Early to mid-era Cure for me. If we're talking revival: I really like the first few albums by Editors!
No one’s heard of these guys but Mary Goes Round and Exploding White Mice. Surprised they didn’t make it big.
Yep three great bands.
Magazine is one of my favourite bands that might fit in here.
The Cure. Robert Smith is a genius
yes.
Great topic to cover. I'm going to select MODERN EON. They only made one album ('Fiction Tales') but it's essential post-punk listening @50mpb.
ah nice! will have to check them out :)
I like Chrome a lot, no one sounded like them. I would call their sound industrial-alien-post-punk.
Thank you so much for the video I love sousie, but also Joy Division and its legacy through New Order
thanks daniel! i've really been getting into joy division recently, live sessions too!
My favorites are Sentimiento Muerto, 80's post-punk from Venezuela!
Sentimiento muerto es una masa! saludos de Argentina
@williamjpwallace
My favorite post punk band is Joy Division. Personally, I play bass, and I take a lot of my queues from Peter Hook, and I think the dynamics that exist between Ian Curtis' vocal lines and Peter Hook's high, mid-rangey riffs are so tightly knit. I wish they could have done more together.
Nice. I picked up a used MD500 recently and I've been wondering where in the chain to use the slicer. So this is really useful! So far I've mostly had it going into a DD500 rather than the other way around. Have you tried the slicer before drive as well? That's on my xmas holidays to-do list.
at this rate i think i've put slicer in all different sorts of combos! i really want to get the sl-20 & of course the new one they just put out. they say if you really want something you should hold off a few days & if you still want it get it, think it's been 2 years now for the sl-20! 😂 will have to get it sooner rather than later!
@@pedalpartners yeah. I’m very tempted by the new one. But I figure I should get the hang of the md500 version 1st! Also, hard to justify the money on something i already sort of have when there’s so much other great gear I don’t have!
If revival is allowed then it's probably Protomartyr. Fantastic albums and a killer live band too.
I saw the Cranes perform at the @CUBECINEMA in Bristol. One of the more memorable gigs i’ve seen. Recently, I have got into Dry Cleaning. Nice guitar work on their latest album Stumpwork. Would like some help to dissect their pedalboard
Woah
✨✨✨
Yall should do a post rock version of these videos. Maybe even a post metal video.
I second these ideas.
here's our how to post rock video th-cam.com/video/iNHsi9A3TPc/w-d-xo.html make sure to share around if you like it :) we have more filmed too!
@@pedalpartners oh thanks! I guess I should’ve searched before I asked. Haha. My bad! Thanks again!
@@wheresallthezombies no worries haha, we pretty much have everything at this point! 😂
Oh course the cure is my favorite postpunk band
The Cure is definitely my favorite!
Greetings from Belgium!
long time fan of the cure & hey!
@@pedalpartners I'm so so so glad you're doing a giveaway ! And I really love your contents! greetings from belgium !
I love the Fall, Wire, Gang of Four, Pere Ubu, but the best band is The Pop Group.
Siouxie and the Banshees
Mine is Fehlfarben, a German post-Punk / New wave band from the 80s which I adore
ah sweet! will have to check them out :)
Was ich haben kann das will ich nicht!
@@VintageFlowers jaaa 😍
@@pogoism1 I also love Es Geht Voran even though it's a bit more on the funky NDW side
@@pogoism1 Also check out Steinwolke - Katharine Katharine for another cool German New Wave song
Joy Division, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
good picks my lad!
That intro music is really nice
ah thank you :) if you like you can check out my releases with violet oscillation & abstract in sound!
@@pedalpartners I would love to! I was honestly even hoping there was someway to hear that intro music isolated as well. Is all to be found on the channel?

this particular track isn't out yet, but we're working on getting more music out this year, some of which will include stuff we've put in videos over the years ;)
Bauhaus isy favorote goth outfit. I find myself tonally chasing sounds most similar to Cure and The Cult however. Cheers!
three awesome picks!
Joy division has been there since ever, but Буерак made me discover the other side of post punk! @despell
will have to check out the latter :)
Post punk 🤝 chorus
Really loved the joy division section, really dark and atmospheric! Can definitely see that fleshed out into an absolute banging song!! Also cheers fr the mention!! Nice seeing Danny there 😎
Oh yea and also @liam_mccourt_music
yeah, it was real easy dialling in these tones tbh, chorus ensemble is 👌 danny's a top lad!
Children of God by Swans is the best Goth album IMO
sweet pick matt!
Honestly a massive fan of a great new post punk/goth band out of Bristol atm called Adoring. Really got a bit of an evil edge to their sound
bristol's not too far from me, might have to check them out!
@@pedalpartners nice! I'm only in Cardiff myself and would absolutely love to share a stage with them. Such a cool vibe
@@tarkenton3895 ah nice, our violet oscillation pedal is made in cardiff!
Freaky - Just watched the Preoccupations KEXP session a minute ago
sick band! hopefully seeing them next year in the uk
@@pedalpartners when are you moving back?
👍
thanks!
My favorite is Joy division and Interpol
good choices :)
Mission of Berma or The Chameleons
For me it’s a tie between joy division and molchat Doma but I mostly listen to joy division so yeahh
Love Bauhaus but Josef K is my favorite.
both great picks :)
Favourite post punk band would be Joy Division, no doubt! 🖤
one of my faves too :)
That bass chorus at 2:30-I don’t normally think about using chorus for bass, but I clearly need to adjust my thinking. @effectron
bass & chorus are a perfect pairing!
@rdoobly
For classic post punk, I have to say The Cure. But for more modern, I have to say Soft Kill
sweet!!
The Cure
I love XTC. Been listening to them a lot lately. I also really like Cocteau twins earlier material @puddlenoir
fave post punk is hard because I don't want to be generic but its probably joy division haha. @nickkforney
This pedal is sick. Would love to add to my pedal board! Favorite post-punk band of all time would have to be Joy Division, as far as modern post-punk goes, it’s gotta be Viet Cong/Preoccupations. Saw them in Seattle back in 2018 and they blew my mind 🤯. @________rawb
wanna see preoccupations, always loved their music, as women as well! hopefully next year :)
Probably The Cure. Epic video and an absolutely killer pedal!! @thetonemason
Probably Joy Division. Great sounds btw
great band, cheers!
Joy Division all day long!😎👍✨
been listening to them a lot recently!!!
@@pedalpartners
I consider the "Movement" album by New Order the third Joy Division album since it really fits more with what they did vs all the albums that came after it. And I so love New Ordwr too.
A band I can recommend for the Joy Division kick would be early Interpol. Also if you do not have it, the Joy Division tribute album "A Means to an End" from the 90s is worth tracking down if you are a fan.
@@gringogreen4719 love interpol, will have to check out that tribute album - thanks for the recommendation :)
@@pedalpartners
Awesome! Yeah, different take on the songs with that tribute. I also like Savages and Jinx for that darker Post Punk sound.
While not explicitly Post Punk, I have been listening to quite a bit of Dum Dum Girls and The Ravonettes lately. Also Fazerdaze and a band called Uju from the Philippines for a more twee Shoegaze sound.
My favorite has got to be The Cure! :)
@Andehmon
great pick!
Me plss
I saw a few people say the Smiths, and I gotta hop on that. Johnny Marr is a legend.
@trustyseacreatures
@luispereztasso
Fontaines DC evolution in sound just made me love as my favourite post-punk band nowdays.
But if you want classics, Joy Division - early New Order is a no-brainer
great choices!! :)
The Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen, Chameleons, The Mission, Sisters of Mercy…. Do you have any recommendations for an affordable drum machine for post punk? I dig your videos!
Thx
@kevymetalbass
try the alesis sr-16, i'll have to do a video on it at some point :)
@@pedalpartners thanks! I’ve been considering the SR-16 as I’ve heard that’s what The Jesus & Mary Chain used at one point. And it can be found for cheap plus they still make it!
This is probably my top genre recently. The Faith & The Muse is underrated but Joy Division is one of my all timers.
grr_noise
Love Echo & The Bunnymen and Cocteau Twins, but favorite has got to be the Cure; their music is timeless. @gnessender
I've always been fond of The Cure and The Smiths (but Morrissey is such a disappointment these days). Just Mustard is very interesting too. @like_icarus_ascending
the smiths are sick, the cure too! johnny marr is a sick guitarist & top bloke from the sound of it
I’m not all that up to speed with specific genres, I listen to whatever sounds good, but it seems Viagra Boys is considered post-punk. They make me laugh and sound cool as well! @cmbijpost
that's what's most important!
Viagra boys have some of the best bass lines I've heard in years.
@yookjiminzzang
Sounds amazing. Would love to give it a try!!
Great video as always, Sad Lovers & Giants are a great classic post punk band that often gets overlooked. @ilaisteinberg
thank you, will have to check them out
Sick video! @mattcomo
thanks!
Drug church! @kaidownguitar
Love it ! Sounds great 😉🤘 @lemmen200
thank you brian!
Bauhaus, definitely Bauhaus.....Cool vid as usual guys. @damianlesar5
bauhaus are so good
Lately Soft Kill is my fav! @archreverend
@lucasmvlima Tudo soa muito bem!
cheers :)
@alittleindi_
great video ♥️
I've checked out a couple lists, so hopefully Talking Heads are considered post punk - great music is great music no matter the label. @brentstewartmusic
@romeo.mp4 loves this video
i love joy division and i would give my first child to go back in time and see them live
joy division and the cure hands down, @breakfastforbears
Great video guys! xx_polaroid_dreams_xx
ty!
Joy Division was my intro to the genre but Interpol is for sure my top
@mdmeier333
i really enjoy interpol, 'untitled' is still a fave of mine
Young Gods, Christian Death, Clan of Xymox, The Comsat Angels, P.I.L, Grauzone, Liaisons Dangereuses, Factrix, Chrome, She Past Away @8bitdkhd
Caifanes got me into post punk, i really like to listen to music from my country, Size is a great band from Mexico too.
@fabianiglesiasmtz
will have to check both of these out, thanks!
Love me some Joy Division joe_rogan_meat
This is the chorus i need. @inadequatetoproducesensations
Joy Division! @patodemar
How did people "post" punk before the internet? 🥁 @sniffmcgee
i assume by mail ;)
Chorus really is the key ingredient to a good post punk tone 🤘🏻🤘🏻 @werner1408
it is indeed, had a lot of fun making this!
My fav post punk band has to be Joy Division. Their music is so Melancholic and really beautiful.
Their song The Eternal is so underrated in their catalog and one of their best
@mydannyvalentine
top pick! really been enjoying them recently :)
@@pedalpartners also thanks for the mention at 1:21 man! Glad to have watched for all this time mate!
@@dannyvalentine468 good knowing you my lad, have a sweet christmas!
Love this! Post punk was what brought me into dream pop/ Shoegaze. Such a great chorus. For me my favourites are The cute and Cocteau twins @peach_jandrew
sweet! i think it's a really important genre for indie music, i've always been around it but just knew it as "indie" before i dove deeper into the subgenres!
I fully agree! The history of music and musical movements is super important and eye opening for creativity and future artists to know. I love digging through timelines of music and how they influenced each other!
Joy Division/New Order and The Cure you can't go wrong really @ed.ache
Its gotta Be Joy Division Right? @phatboee

awwwwww ty ty
My favorite post-punk band is probably the cure. Their basspines are so fun to play and Robert Smith is such an amazing songwriter
@jackbrandi_
robert smith seems like a top lad! love the cure
Sounds amazing! Loved! @fersadi_
Definitely Joy Divison and Interpol
@shagaggythecaribou
been listening to joy division a lot recently, always enjoyed interpol :)
@itskidleo
Lemme get that pedal @kevntseng
spooky scary music @darrenmulligan3
Although i do love a lot of classics like Joy Division or The Sound, it is the newer bands such as Preoccupations that really got me into post-punk. It is post-punk and shoegaze that got me this chorus obssesion, i love it with almost everything - synths, electric and acoustic guitars, but especially with bass. @junior_painkiller
both great genres for modulation sounds!!
@nadacetico
The Cuuuureeeeee @the_action_index
my fav has got to be Siouxie and the banshees I can't count how many times I've listened to the scream!! @matt.gillham2
Siouxsie And The Banshees!! I got the grobert preamp and its amazing! @marcosguevaradominguez
been really impressed by this chorus, love the sparkle ✨
