I find the reverse to be the issue. There’s so much crap to wade through that the few playable games tend to have been in my wishlist waiting for a discount for a while (it’s where anything with a season pass goes)
There are probably more good games released these days than ever before. You just forgot about all the trash that was terrible back in the day. Difference is now gaming is more mainstream, so there's more of everything, both good and bad. So yeah, takes a little more work to filter through, but quite easy when you have a few trusted youtubers and streamers/reviewers. Steam reviews are often a great way to get a sense of whether you will enioy a game or not too.

@@trabuco9 Ah yes that's why GTAV is one of the most profitable games ever. Because it sucks. Just like PlayStation and xbox in general right? Can't have normal conversation with people like you.
BG3 is the obvious pick. It was an early access title done right, it is phenomenally high quality in every regard, it comes from a passionate developer that's both open and honest with their community, and also treat their employees well. It's an underdog story, really. Even though you wouldn't realize it from seeing the actual game, because it looks so good that you can't believe anyone other than a big rich company made it. But Larian are technically an indie studio still, not triple-A. A fantastic job, and a true victory.
It's such a shame that The Talos Principle 2 is just buried into obscurity... not a single person is even mentioning it for 2023 and here I am thinking it's easily one of the greatest releases in recent memory. Probably the greatest puzzle game ever made, freaking dwarfs Portal 2 in terms of standards for puzzle games, not just for the gameplay, but also the story has probably the most optimistic view of humanity in any media ever. GORGEOUS graphics and also innovated in the sense that it's the very first fpp game to have actual NPCs that you can actually talk to who are also in the same situation you're in. Very first time a first person puzzler has ever done that. Every single other first person puzzler always has disembodied voices telling you stuff through a speaker or a 'fake' scripted companion that isn't even in the same situation you're in.
The first Talos Principle was just incredible but very much went under the radar. I reckon that *everyone* who bought the first got the second though, and I was hoping it would get more recognition. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case. Only 30 quid too, you'd have thought that reviewers like Mack would be interested in it rather than choosing obviously crap games to bash in reviews that everyone knew were obviously crap without the help of reviewers.

In fairness I went in with that attitude given the way most games like this are to play with randoms, but actually found it had one of the best online communities I've come across. Nobody was taking it overly seriously, people had a laugh when you died in stupid ways rather than raging. I found it genuinely a lot of fun to play even without friends, which came as a big surprise.

I personally didn't like certain narrative changes done in Dead Space, and it felt like it didn't do enough for me to earn a place as a remake. I'm sticking to the original on that one. For RE4, I can jump from the original to the remake, and I love them both for the same and different reasons. Still, always stoked to hear your thoughts on these.
@WorthABuyMack thank's a million for your reviews, my wife and I look forward to them every week, fortunately you have saved us a few pounds when it comes to buying games, I first started playing games on the old Amiga 500, so like you I remember all the games that were made back then and had to be good, my fave game back then was also the settlers 2 and 3 we were just wondering if you have any high hopes for the new Frostpunk 2 game that may be released in 2024 ? For the love of everything please play Against the Storm (1.0 came out in December 2023), that game is brilliant and was already amazing in early access and devs are amazing, probably the best development process I've ever seen from any dev team. They clearly knew what they wanted to do but also listened to feedback from players. Regular updates (every 2 weeks in early access which is crazy to keep that up), regular info, listing what they added and what they wanted to add, what they added due to players... Just brilliant all throughout. I'm very much not into this type of management games but it blew me away. So simple to start with but it has so many difficulty options and customization and upgrades that it genuinely makes you want to push your comfort zone and rewards you. There is no jarring spike when you switch things up that makes you think that you should back down. The progress is so smooth that it just keeps you motivated to keep playing. It's a travesty that 1.0 came out late enough that it got ignored for all awards that it so rightfully deserves tbh. Pretty cheap for what it is as well (and devs pay attention to regional pricing instead of using steam's bs default suggestions). I'd love to see you record your reactions to the steam awards. Precisely that one award that made me almost shit myself with laughter.
Lethal Company completely surprised me how much fun a very simple concept could be. That game has the foundation to be something incredible. If the developer can add more variety and content he'll be up there with the best. Just llok at the Steam charts for active players. I believe it's being developed by only one guy! Absolutely amazing work.
I remember when early access first came out and it was a meme. I still avoid early access until the game is mostly complete because many of the devs from back then didn't finish their games and ran with the cash or I would lose interest and not return to the game when it was completed. I still abide by that but will make an exception for one company: Larian.
Are you sure? It seems like a full blown studio game to me. Also, Mac said an early access game can't be game of the year. @@GangsterFrankensteinComputer
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer Indie and AAA aren't mutually exclusive. Indie refers to how the studio got its money to develop the game, A / AA / AAA refers to the overall budget for the game. BG3 cost over 100 million dollar, that's 100% AAA.
I dont play early access because I am sick and tired of waiting for them to be finished only to be abandoned by the developers. I am also not playing AAA games because they are not finished and the devs dont fix their broken games.
Only played 2 games that came out in 2023, probably the least I have played since I was able to play video games as a toddler and I was super impressed by both of them. Jagged Alliance 3, I had never heard about this franchise and I really wasn't expecting much and boy was I pleasantly surprised! Imagine Xcom meets The Expandables with a nice touch of humor and a great story, replayability AND soundtrack. My number one pick this year. Aliens Dark Descent. I'm a huge fan of the movies (at least the first 2 ones that is) and us fans have not been very lucky in Alien Games except for AvP 1 and 2 that date back to the late 90s early 2000s AND Alien Isolation which came out 10 years ago and is one of the most underrated video games ever IMO. Anyways Aliens Dark Descent is really cool if you love the franchise and it has a pretty good story, AMAZING atmosphere and music. The replayability isn't that great though and the game really suffered from bugs (not xenos😉) at release. Anyways those are the 2 best games of the year in my opinion. Out of the 2 I have played this year that is! 🤣
Dude, I absolutely love your reviews! You’re the most honest, genuine and downright trustworthy reviewer. It’s so funny how there’s no triple A games. I think you nailed this. I’ll continue to support you as long as.
I agree with several other commentors on the disrespect for Resident Evil 4, and you still have Fromsoft Derangement Syndrome from not learning your lesson after Elden Ring. Armored Core 6 was incredible. Wouldn't surprise me if you did a year later review just like you did with ER.
Happy New Year to all non-console players ! Not an RPG enjoyer but BG3 deserves to be game of the year in every corner of the interwebs, we need new standards so maybe one day AAA games will get the message.
I was really getting into BG3 but got totally taken out of it when I had a battle where the enemy could shoot arrows through a rock to hit me. I may go back to it eventually but this flaw really killed my motivation to play.
Machine for Pigs was made by a different studio (The Chinese Room) than the one that made OG Amnesia, and The Bunker (Frictional Games). Frictional Games only published Machine for Pigs, so they didn't go through the bad patch with the pigs, because it weren't them technically.
Ready or Not 1.0 is my Coop Multiplayer GOTY ,No cringe story, No locked guns no Battlepass no unicorn camo suits, No handholding, no fear (shool map) good AI . just do and equip wtf you want.
I'd have to agree that 2023 was a damn good year, mainly for Indie and AA - They've been carrying this industry, and they deserve all the success. Hell, some of my favourite games I've played this year have been developed by one developer to around a dozen.
It blows me away that there were a lot of people who thought Alan Wake 2 beat out BG3 for GOTY. I got so bored with AW2 that I never actually beat it, I'm not even sure how far I got and I don't really care. People praise it for the story, but to me the story is actually the weakest part of it apart from the horribly uninspired combat loop. I wasn't invested in it at all, I didn't care to find out what happened next. It reminded me of the kind of story that an aspiring author would have come up with when they were high school age, just convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. It was a boring fucking game. OH BUT THE DARK PLACE AND MR. SCRATCH AND WHAT HAPPENS TO SAGA ANDERSON AND oh fuck off. BG3's story has Alan Wake 2 bent over in every way imaginable. It doesn't even come close.
I thought you would consider Alien dark descent for strategy category (you had it pretty filled though tbf). I’m a warhammer fanboy. I’d love to see your review on rogue trader. great content!!
Ah, man, these have become a yearly rite for me now. I can really only afford to buy a couple of games a year and I know I can trust Mac to set me in the right direction. Cheers again Old Chap x

Thank you Mac! Happy New Years!
BG3, Showgunners and the finally ready Ready or Not are the winners for me. With Wigmund as a runner up.
Having a blast with my old D&D friends playing BG3. It’s amazing.
I like how a 3rd person shooter wins first person category haha
Great list, amazing games!
Battle bit needed a mention
Mack thinks FPS mean fire, pew, shoot
You're the only content creator where i pause to leave a comment. I don't want miss a second! happy New Year Sir!
Mac, you said there is no AAA games this year.
Does that mean you don't consider Baldur's Gate to be AAA?
BGIII was an early access indie game.
BG3 cost over 100 million dollar, that's 100% AAA.
best fps and it's a third person shooter. FPS, man, it's in the name
Don't say that, he gets all sensitive when you correct him about it.
@@OMGKiirofunny how most critics can give it but can't take it.
@@LonelyGamr - 100%. It's lame.
I’ll continue to support you as long as.
remnant 2 is a first person shooter?
Hiya MAC! Happy Holidays and a Very Happy New Year! Thanks for making 2023 bearable. Hats off to the great channel! Cheers!
My GOTY is The Coffin of Andy and Leyley
The FPS award goes to a game whose footage shows a 3rd person game, on a channel that regularly reviles 3rd person games.
I was really getting into BG3 but got totally taken out of it when I had a battle where the enemy could shoot arrows through a rock to hit me. I may go back to it eventually but this flaw really killed my motivation to play.
That's probably a clipping bug, that's usually not allowed and the patches regularly fix things like that.
I enjoy your content a lot and I think it's because you seem very realistic and sincere - not trying to impress anyone. I like that.
If you're deciding which RPG game to buy, you should buy both Baldur's Gate 3 and Wartales.
A fair result I think. Happy new year Mac. Nice to see you enjoyed gaming in 23, here's to more in 24!
Thanks Mac! You keep renewing my faith the gaming industry isn't dead. Your enthusiasm for gaming is contagious!
FPS > Remnant 2
GOTY Nominee > Game released 2 years ago
Amazing.
Happy New Year Macky. Hope many blessings to you and the family 👍
Happy new year, Mac!
Brilliant 👌🏻🤨 happy New Year to everyone!
I felt like I had to do another post on this video, because it is something that has been building up inside the deep regions of my heart Mack ..... I miss TB so fucking much, and after he died I thought "influencer" videos would never be the same again ..... but along came yet another honest pure Brit .... and he managed to grip me by the heartstrings through sheer honesty and pure worth and quality, and yes I know that you are cringing so hard right now reading this but fuck you you WILL continue reading even though every fibre in your being is telling you that this is fucking akward ....... I am so fucking happy I found your channel, thank you for being you buddy, I wish you all the best in 2024 and every fucking year after this, in the words of Sweet, big love
Thank you for not even acknowledging Armored Core 6 and RE4 in this video. Subbed.
I loved Atomic Heart and Remnant 2. Robocop and Starship troopers is very fun too
jagged alliance 3 got some free dlc (this week?), that is rare
Pretty wild that a 3rd person shooter won best first person shooter lol
Thank you for the recommendation Mack, all the best in the new year and hopefully full of nice gaming surprises.
I've put 110 hours into BG3 so far and it feels like 10, it's that good. I lasted about a week playing Remnant 2 playing with friends before we got bored and stopped playing. Even though they're completely different genres, Remnant isn't even in the same league as BG3.
Your the best Mac, thank you for all that you do.
Happy New year Mack been watching your content for years love your honesty and humor!
How is armored core 6 not on here? That was one of the best games this year hands down
@@shifterzxor it was just boring as shit with 90% useless easy enemies
Nice. An 3rp person action shooter wins FPS of the year. That's fucking genius.
9:00 - PIGGY 🐷
snort🐽snort🐽
99% of TH-cam be like, "Why games are boring" or "2023 worst year for gaming" and Mac be like, "2023 was a very good year for gaming".
Only Mack could give a third person shooter the best FPS game of the year award
even in a video where you're supposed to like every one of em, you still find a way to go full british critic mode and mention some shite, i love it
great recommendations mack, I wish you all the best in 2024
