    This was so helpful!! I’ve only seen people drop spindle very thin yarn and was curious if you could make it thicker. This was so explained so simply and was easy to understand!

    Thanks a heap for this !
    I've wanted to know how to spin for ages, but spinning wheels are dizzying expensive. Fortunately I have a pretty awesome fella that spends a lot of his free time making things, which is how I ended up with a drop spindle today.
    I'm an absolute novice, zero knowledge. I had some super chunky wool that to me looked like your roving. Lol.. I pulled it into thinner strands like you showed. Put the already made string, and... omg.. I'm MAKING string 😃🙃😃🤩!!!
    Well not a lot of string, maybe half a yard, but hey I did make it. My thumbs are needing toughened, I'm a wuss.
    You explained how to do it so so so great. I can't believe how easy you made it to follow. Thank you so very much for taking time from your day to teach this FOR FREE.
    I'm pretty sure if I can follow your instruction ANYONE can learn to do this. Much love to you.

    Omg your video is so much more straight forward and my speed being new to this. And it's the first I've watched talking about a leader yarn and explained the parts of the spindle and the terminology. This will make me face my fear and go for spinning. This is something I've wanted to learn to do for years. I finally have a couple of spindles and roving yarn and I'm gonna go for it! Thank you! ♥️

    This is one of the best beginner drop spindle videos I've found - would you consider doing one on plying? (In particular, none seem to discuss the pros and cons of 2ply vs 3 ply)

      Thank you so much for your comment, you're not the first to ask this, so I'll definitely look into it. I have got future plans for more spinning videos, I just haven't found enough hours in the day to film one yet 😅 Soon hopefully xx

      @@WoollenWytch Plys are spun in the opposite twist to the single ply, using two or three lengths of the thread you just span, instead of the roving.

    This is the best explanation of spinning i’ve seen. Thank you so much for this. I’m new to learning and seem to get tripped up in the drafting part, so thank you! 🙏🏽💗

      You're very welcome! Glad it was of some help for you. Drafting as you spin takes a little practice, but there no difference and no harm if you want to pre-draft before you get the spindle or wheel out. Good luck on your spinning journey ♥

    It is undoubtedly the Best One I've seen.
    I was bought 2 kits for Christmas and not got anything so consistent so far, but this is definitely the one I'll be watching , again & again.

      I use carding combs to really open the roving out into rolls of the lightest airiest floof imaginable. These spin far finer, about as thin as the separate plies of the leader yarn, usually with around 12-15 fibre strands across the thumb of my drafting hand. Fewer than 8, the thread's going to break. One reason for doing this is because you may still find clumps of uncombed short-cut wool in the feed. The word rolag is often used for the feed, and in particular for any roving which has been opened up, either as described here or with combs.

      @Sarah Davies, I bought the Flower Drop Spindle, Spinning Kit last week.
      Its a dream to use. The Fibre that's in the kit is soft & squishy, I bought extra fibres to use as well,. The Spindle is light & just long enough for new Spinners.(I am one of them).
      If you're still looking & wondering, you won't be disappointed with it.
      Take care & stay safe.

    I do really enjoy this tutorial, overall have found it very helpful as a novice. I really wish, however that you would have showed us a good way to begin spinning without using a lead yarn, just because I find it a strange premise that to make yarn, one needs yarn to begin with. Just a peeve!
    I appreciate you for taking the time to make this video, and don’t let my critique make you think otherwise!

      @@ivygarcia6878 I think I figured it out? Ok so when you use a leader, you start wrapping your yarn around your niddy-noddy, and when you reach the leader, cut the end of your *yarn* (not leader), and hold it so that it doesn’t untwist. Then tie the end wherever you like to on your niddy-noddy.
      If you aren’t using a leader and have just started your yarn on the hook, just do the same thing but instead of cutting your yarn, slip it off instead. Hope this helps!

    I am just learning about this (finally!), I have loads of scrap acrylic yarn, if I cut long enough lengths and carded it, do you think I could spin it into new yarn?
    PS - This is the best video I’ve seen on drop spinning! Thank you so much!

    • @WoollenWytch
      @WoollenWytch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can certainly make scrappy batts and rolags with lengths of scrap yarn, however you will probably need a bit of wool fibre to card with it- this will help keep the scrap yarn together as you spin.
      P.S. Thank you so much! Glad I could help ♥

    Great video. I seem to have trouble with getting my twist to move up the fibre. It just goes all twisty at the bottom and doesnt want to travel up. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? X

    • @WoollenWytch
      @WoollenWytch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lisa, its hard to tell without seeing it, but it could be the fibres are too thick. Sometimes I like to 'manually' move up the twist with my free hand and gently push it further up. Its all a learning curve though, so keep trying and you'll find what works for you. Good luck! Xx

    Does this yarn come undone? What’s the best way to unwrap it from the spindle? I’m sorry if my questions are silly. I’m completely new!

    • @WoollenWytch
      @WoollenWytch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you're unwrapping the yarn from the spindle onto a niddy-noddy or around the back of a chair, try not to twist the spindle around- you can lose your twist this way and loosen the fibre. Try to 'roll' it around the chair if that makes sense. I might have to do another video to explain 🤔

    Can you make thick yarn and coiled yarn with a drop spindle?

    • @WoollenWytch
      @WoollenWytch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I've only just seen this comment. Yes you can make some lovely thick yarn on a drop spindle, it might take you a little longer and you may have to do more of the park/draft method rather than free spinning but you can spin them on a spindle. Plying is also possible on a spindle but a little more finickity and yarns that are 'super coiled' might be a little too difficult to manage. But just give yourself some breathing space and time to have a play. Make mistakes, experiment, it's how we learn ❤

    • @WoollenWytch
      @WoollenWytch  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Make sure you have some tension on the yarn between the hook and your hand. Sometimes it can help if you wrap the yarn around the hook twice, rather than just hooking it in. When you roll on your leg, always make sure you roll in one direction. Hope that helps xx
