Making French Cleat Tool Holders

- In my continuing efforts to improve my shop organization, I disposed of my pegboard and installed a set of french cleats. Now I have to create custom tool holders. These are the first three (There's a fourth shown for my eggbeater drill that was already made and just needed a piece of french cleat added to the back). All of the holders are made from scraps and material in my shop.

Good idea with the chisel holder, despite being very complicated, it is very safe
I never seen anyone use a table saw as good as this guy!!
I did a similar chisel holder but for about 10 chisels. I routed the grooves and screwed clear Perspex over the front so I can see at a glance which chisel to grab. Turned out fantastic.
I really liked the chisel holder where you can see which is which.
The trick is to make some of the holders so that you can pull out the tools to the front instead of lifting them out upward.
Or at least diagonally.
Then you can put those holders beneath the other ones and never hit anything above. It lets you use the space more efficiently.
My shed is only 8x9 feet, gotta use every tiniest nook.
oh that's a good idea I never thought of... square screwdriver holder. seems way easier than trying to drill holes and make it look nice

The French Cleat & your video saved my storage problem as I have no floor space &
only 22 inches of wall in 3 places which I can hang 2-3 long 7 ft x 1in. boards which
gives me 6 to 9 boards to hang stuff on! : ) Thank You!
I like the FC system, but I'm finding that the holders can pop off when you pull a tool when your not quit strait up and clean the holder. I'm going back and placing my cleats on the wall closer together and making a locking tab so the holder can't clear the wall cleat. nice job. the system give a lot of options.

Nice work! The FC offers some nice flexibility for moving the sets around. Personally, I still use peg hooks (with essential locking clips), but my most strict rule is
that the most common tools are to be in the easiest accessed part of the wall. The least common further away from my arms reach.
My go-to is....I really like a shallow 3" deep lightweight cardboard box for all common tools (hammer, screws, pliers, adjustable wrench, cordless drill, drill bits, common screwdrivers) and I leave them in that box for common around the house jobs. I got the idea from how the dentist does it with his common tray of tools. I just keep my "tray" ready to go anywhere in the house and prevents me from making a trip back to the garage for a tool I forgot to include. Of course, I will add a specific selection of tools to my common tray from my pegboard as I need. For instance, for electrical work (wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape, needle nose pliers, etc) I will add those in addition to my common tools in my tray.

I think the peg-board-to-French-cleat transition is just a part of work shop growing pains. I finally ditched the peg board and got my cleat wall up, so thank you for the great fixture ideas!
Why not a combination of both? Both have advantages.

I like and approve of all of it and will give Pegboards a second and last thought. This is better!
I like that you used your imagination to make your tool holders. A stop block behind the tool holder will keep it from coming off the wall when you pull up on screwdrivers.
Vertical storage frees up your horizontal space. French cleats are the way forward but watch how much space you put between each cleat as you don't want to inhibit tool removal from the cleats below. Thanks for posting.

Just found your channel while browsing for storage ideas. I like your take on the FC system. The plier rack was cool, but my favorite is the chisel holder. With your setup, the individual chisels are easily accessible, but the business end is also covered. That is great for me, as I am the first guy to hit a corner of sharp stuff with my hand.

I like what you did. For things like screwdrivers, I don't think one row of tools per holder is enough. Make the holder deeper to hold 2 or 3 rows. You get more tools per square foot of wall. I've also decided that most French cleat brackets need to include a lip goes pretty tightly under the flat bottom of the cleat board. Otherwise some brackets will lift out of the cleat when you lift the tool from it's holder.

think about putting the holders at a slight angle. that way there is way less vertical dead space since you dont need clearance to pull it out. your screwdriver holder for example if you were to slightly angle it towards you then you can put a second rack right above it. in my small shop thats a must!

The Narex chisels have a 7/8” retainer, you can just drill 7/8 holes. Anything larger just mortise the two sides out. 7/8” will hold firmly while still give easy access.

Dave does really careful work; great job! Like the way your create and use jigs so often; very efficient. I'm building a similar French cleat system for my garage and shop but instead of such a uniform wall of slats I simply put a board with 45 degree angle wherever it's needed around the shop and garage. In this way I don't have to make an array of slats that may or may not be too crowded for what I need. Further, I'm just using scrap wood to keep it all inexpensive.

You will have less waste in cutting the cleats if you make the first cut wider and cut them in half. You get two cleats with little or no waste.
I found the French Cleat System filled with dust and sawdust so I went for the peg board as it’s a lot cleaner.

That's a "dado stack". Two outside blades and a variable number of chippers between them to cut a wide slot. I understand that they are illegal to sell in many countries.

What was the size of the strips you mounted to the wall. You have cut sizes and lengths

The strips are 3 1/2' wide at the widest (front) part and spaced 3" apart. Truthfully, the widths and spacing were pretty arbitrary. I was making them up as I went along based on the material I had and the space. It's very possible I may rip them narrower or re-position them in the future.
you can just rip a 2x4 at a 45 and it works just fine. that's what i did.
Can a French cleat system be made from 1x 6 or is it necessary to be 3/4” plywood?
laura palmore You can certainly make them from 1x_ material. I have used solid wood cleats to hang cabinets. I think plywood might be cheaper but I would price it out before deciding.
I’ve watched many many videos on French cleats. I’m still waiting for some one to tell me the exact dimensions of each cleat and the exact spacing between them!

Like what you did out of scraps. Why did you use such large cleats on the wall since you didn’t add more support screws?
Thanks. Truthfully, I couldn't say how I arrived at the width of the cleats other than it looked about right to me. They seem to be working well, but that doesn't mean that I won't ever trim them down if I decide it would work better. My shop will probably always be a work in progress.

That's the splitter that came with the saw. The plastic guard broke years ago.
