- The Devils Den fatality fire occurred on August 17, 2006 in the Eastern Great Basin of Utah. Sometime near 1350 hours, black smoke came out of the drainage. A crew superintendent overheard the ICT4 tell the AFMO to get out of the canyon. Moments later the ICT4 told the AFMO to drop his pack and run.
It should be mentioned that an AFMO (Asst. Fire Management Officer) is a high ranking member of a district or forest fire management hierarchy. An ICT4 is likely an engine or crew captain, outranked by the AFMO. I suspect this played a part in his decision to counter the ICT's recommendation.
I've seen fires blow up like this a couple times in the past couple summers. You really have no time to react once you see black smoke coming up below you. Having a lookout give you a heads up is critical to get out before it gets tight but sometimes it is happening before anyone that articulate it. Luckily in my case we were going direct and I had solid cold black to walk into but it really goes from 0 to 100 within seconds.
That’s wild how insane fires can change so fast
Sad, yet we've all known people like this, who feel they have to always prove themselves. Ego kills more men than battle.
One decision based on faulty knowledge of his situation's awareness killed him.
My youngest Son wants to follow in his Uncle’s footsteps and be a Wildland Firefighter. These videos make me both proud of him and scared sh#tless.
What I think these videos could do better is tell a fuller story no matter how you do it. Because right now it's hard to understand why he did this dangerous and unsafe thing. But with a bit dialogue from actors I would understand motivations. Because as I don't understand motivations I just assume he was a bad apple and just didn't want to be safe.
Onest I saw this video I liked the devil
Darwins law...
Another wannabee hero paid the price for losing overview & failing situational awareness
Autistic intel making his voice heard. OK
