That's because it used to be a counterpart to Dragon Dragon was a strong defensive typying with it being resistant to all three starter types and Electric, but at the balancement that it's rather poor offensively, being strong only againt itself. Ice was the same for offence, most Ice+another type can cover most of the type charts (Iron Bundle be like) but at the cost of being weak defensively, resisting only itself
The thing about Ice types is the great offensive, but every Water Type can learn Ice Beam (Also Ice types don't learn Chilling Water) every Pokémon that can spin learn Ice Spinner, and Ice don't get that much benefict for the defense in Snow due to have many weaknesses. You want to hit something with ice? Just use a Water Type with Ice moves, is less glass cannon
I really think Water should be weak to Ice and Ice should resist water instead of Water resisting Ice and doing everything an Ice type can do but better.
I have long since thought that ice should resist water (put water in cold and it makes more ice) and electric (put electronics in cold and it dies). These would make ice WAY more balanced.
Electronics in cold don't necessarily die. However, ice and snow are electrical resistors, and lightning forms much less frequently in cold climates, so I do agree with that resistance.
What about Hot Water? That melts ice, so wouldn’t that make Water Super Effective against Ice? Ice not resisting Water makes sense, because cold environments are a lot rarer than not cold environments. Just saying!
@@tooketsuenshi8121 water isn’t “weird”, it’s because of science and the molecular heat conversion. The formula is a headache to think about, but that’s why not water freezes faster than cold water, because it takes less energy at high temperatures to remove the heat.
Some changes I heard over the years are: Removing Fairy's resistance to Bug and make it weak to Bug. The second is that in animated movies or stories, fairy's useally live in forests and are often associated with nature. This has led some fans to believe Grass should resist Fairy. The third is that if you implemented the nature association, it would make sense to make Fairy weak to Fire. Fire already resists Fairy, and I'm pretty sure that if you give someone the choice to fight a Fairy type with either a Fire or Poison type they would choose Fire. Although some are afraid that if you give Fire stab on two of the franchise's best types, Fire might become too OP.
I'm against fire beating fairy because fire already outclasses poison in beating grass, I think that's partially the reason fairy was given a poison weakness.
I am with you up until the fire type offensive boost. Every fire type already feels like it is unjustifiable to use unless it is aggressive and fast. No need to add on to their offensive power.
It shocked me to my core when I found out Poison was ONLY super effective against Grass until Gen 6! Like, what are we doing here? Why does this type even exist if there's nowhere to use it?
9 relationship changes I'd do (and one type bonus addition), alphabetical by defending type: *Fairy no longer resist Bug* - just to buff Bug *Ghost no longer resist Bug* - no reason for this resistance *Grass resist Fairy* - not particularly harmed by life and growth magic, and should benefit from it *Ice resist Electric* - ice and snow are poor conductors, it is harder for lightning to form in cold environments *Ice resist Fairy* - resist life and growth magic *Ice resist Grass* - resist life and growth energy *Psychic resist Poison* - the "mind over matter" rationale people use for why Psychic is super effective is far more of a reason for Psychic to resist Poison *Psychic* - immune to the Confused status *Steel weak to Electric* - electrical conductivity *Water weak to Poison* - it's "poison", and water is needed for life Potentially: Normal weak to Poison - it's "poison", but making Poison SE against the three most common types might be too much And have a lot of new abilities and moves, like Extremophile (resist Fire, Ice, and Rock), Pollen Protection (resist Flying and Bug), Invasive (immune to entry hazards), etc.
@RandomPhantom thank you. It's actually the short version of thoughts I've had over 4 years. I could explain my rationale further, but lengthy comments may get overlooked as is.
@RandomPhantom Actually, which changes did you disagree with? I took another look at some of them, so I'm curious if there's any overlap between your thoughts and my recent ones.
@RandomPhantom Nature also works with *nature, and yet Grass resists Grass. If anything, Grass would have the most reason to be immune to Fairy damage. As for ice, again, ice and cold would limit nature energy and growth. As for Normal weak to Poison, even if that happened, Normal would only have two weaknesses and would still have an immunity, which is a very fair trade off. The only reason I changed my thought on that is because if Poison was also strong against Water, the two changes would more than double the number of Pokemon weak to it, and that feels like too much of a change.
I want Fairy to be weak to Rock, it is the closest thing to represent salt, the other fairy weakness in lore, like how Steel represent cold iron. Not only that, but rock is a common type and has stealth rock, it will definitely knock fairy by a huge peg and make it less overpowered.
Ghost having more super effective coverage would be cool and all but I think the last thing we need to make ghost STAB more spammable than it already is. They'd probably have to make more ghost resists to balance it out a bit
I agree with the water and poison thing honestly. with how we have poison types that exist to represent pollution and how Celadon had that pond full of grimer etc etc it would have made so much sense
Dudeeee I totally forgot about the grime pond. Fishing out that goopy boi the first time as a kid had me tripping tf out thinking my game glitched hahaha
Thing os that Bulbasaur (being Grass/Poison) was already stronger than Squirtle, so making Poison stronger than Water would have made things worse for the poor turtle.
Since Fairy is as close as we'll likely get to a Light type, I was disappointed that the balance team didn't make Ice resist it. Ice/snow reflect light so it's reason enough to buff a bad type.
Fighting is already the "light" type. Dark type is the "underhand/dirty/evil fighting" type in japanese, whereas the fighting type is its counterpart, the "honourable fighting/hero" type.
No should have more resists not more super effective imo, balance wise ghost moves are so free to click. I think something like 2 more ghost resists but 1 more thing it could hit super effectively could do the trick.
Before fairy types were added, I always thought that dark, psychic and ghost should be the weirder versions of grass, water and fire. Also, the no.1 type that should be super effective against itself in my opinion is fighting. That just makes sense.
@@emperorcubone I would make psychic weak to ghost, ghost weak to dark, and dark weak to psychic, and make them immune to each other going backwards, ghost immune to psychic because you can't damage the mind of something that doesn't have a brain, psychic immune to dark, and dark immune to ghost. Finally i would make fairy weak to dark. That keep darks immunity, checks fairy and still keeps dark as a good type while giving ghost more purpose and make psychic a little better.
I think fighting should resist fighting, since blocks are a vital part of all martial arts. It makes sense that a fighter would know how to defend himself agaibst another in a fair fight
@@juliamavroidi8601 I get the logic, but since fighters are the only one who can hurt other fighters in the real world in a fight, it makes sense to me that fighting would be effective against fighting
@@derekwall5570 I don't get some of your logic: - Why is the Psychic type the heroic one? the Psychic type represents the mind, the knowledge, why would it be stronger than a type that is literally called evil in Japan. - Why would Fairy be weaker to Dark? the Fairy type represents fairy-tales were the good guys always win (the reason why Firy beats Dragon) so why would Dark win here?.
I think ice should resist... anything in addition to itself. It makes me sad that one of my favorite types is so frail. Maybe water in addition to flying, since ice is just frozen water?
@@MrBrewskiDrewski If you put water in ice the ice becomes water, which is why water resists ice and not the other way around. Resisting flying could work.
@@StrawhatRye it’s still just frozen water, and if water can resist itself, why not itself in solid form? It’s the temperature that melts the ice, not the water itself.
I think the best resistances for Ice are: Flying, Grass, Ice, Water. 4 resistances are more than enough to make the Ice type so much better. Especially combinations like Ice-Ground would be even better than before.
Ice should resist water as well. I mean, pouring water on ice just adds another layer of ice. And while I don't think Ice should be super effective against water, I'd say that maybe water types should have higher odds of being frozen solid.
the better idea is just to make ice and water resist each other (as water already does) and a more creative idea could also be having Scald be super effective to ice in this case, and be the water-type counterpart to Freeze Dry (or just create a new move for that matter that has this effect and keep the burn potential on Scald)
Time ago I watched a video about rebalancing the type chart, and there was the suggestion of making Fighting weak to Poison (illness can outmatch even strong fighters), or Psychic resisting Fairy (facts against fantasy)
Yep. Not a single buff for the Bug type. Not even something simple like removing Fairy type's resistance against Bug types for some reason or even better, making them super effective against Fairy types since they don't like icky stuff and all.
If bug gained resistances to dark and psychic Remove fighting and fairy non super effective Bug would be workable Defensively worse than grass, and similar offensively Difference is BST and utility That's why high BST, genesect, volcarona, scisor, all good with high BST Rimimbee and Shiinotic were good due to utility Just have higher BST, it would make a large difference
The thing is that water gets decomposed when a strong electric current, it's called electrolysis. That's why it's weak to electric. Steel lets electric current flow through it without problem. If it was purely related to the electric conductivity, many rocks are conductive, bugs are conductive, grass is conductive (yet it resists electric), and most importantly, ice is by very definition, just as conductive as water since it is frozen water. But since electrolysis is much harder to do on chunk of ice because of ion stuff, electric isnt super effective against it
when i was younger i thought ice was super effective against water, and water and electric were super effective against steel. just because i thought it made sense that way. i think that would be cool to implement it in the games. also ice and poison being super effective against bug. (i know poison used to be super effective against bug in gen 1 but i think it makes sense for it to still be that way. poor bugs though.)
I like a lot of the ideas like poison being super effective against water, electric being super effective against steel and ice resisting flying, but ghost has a big role and not outclassed by dark in the meta. Ghost hitting almost everything for neutral damage is huge.
Idk about most of these, Fairy being super effective against itself will just make fairies dominate the games again(basically gen 5 dragons part 2), Ice would work with some buffs but honestly it’s already well balanced as is, it’s literally had two generations in a row where mons were introduced that dominated the offensive end of the meta. Heck no on making Ghosts better offensively, they are arguably the best offensive type in the game rn, they don’t need the help. Also, the electric thing is not simply conducting-based, it’s thematic for the type. Water is a thematically organic type that happens to specialize in an element that is highly conductive, steel is inorganic in theme, when you stick a sword into lightning, the sword isn’t damaged so much as you are holding it.
Thank you! I thought it already did for at least the first 6 years playing Pokemon, but no! I mean "scorched earth" hurts literally everything around it BUT the earth; the ground is still there afterwards, so fire doesn't do that much...
@@EmeralBookwise You use mud to extinguish fire, therefore it resists the heat and suffocates the flames by removing oxygen. So it really should resist fire.
I think Fighting should be super effective against itself, I'm not exactly sure why I feel this way but it just feels right to me, maybe it's because of fighting competitions and stuff
Fricken knocking it out of the park with these video ideas! I would love to hear you explain all of the resist/super effectives for each type combo. You did it really well here!
Argh, wonderful. I do love a quality type video, and this is no exception! These feel outside the typical choices as well, especially that no.5 pick. Had never really considered that. Keep up the incredible work.
@@emperorcubone it doesn’t affect the power of ice type moves at all, which is odd. Even Primal Groudon’s ability to negate water completely doesn’t affect ice moves.
With ghost, be very careful in balancing it. As redundant as it may be, if you make it more offensive than it already is without adding another weakness, you just turn it into the next op type. If fairy should be be super effective against fairy, by your logic, psychic should be super effective against psychic and fighting should be super effective against fighting for the same reasons.
The answer you're looking for in number two is Steel. Paranormal activity messing with electronics (but not electricity) is a staple. Supernatural spirits passing through metal barriers, likewise. I think Steel getting its Dark resistance back but being weak to Ghost would be perfect.
The electric - steel type is kinda funny because water actually isn't a conductor, the salts and minerals in it are, still they used the "it conducts electricity" for water ignoring that steel actually does conduct electricity.
Many people don't take neutral relationships into account for some types. Electric isn't a powerhouse because it hits many things for super effective damage, but because it has so many neutral matchups. Ground is immune but only dragon and grass resist it. Electric hits 15 types for at least neutral and that's strong. That said i agree it could use another type to hit super effectively especially if it has a type immune to it, and steel would be the type that makes rhe most sense. That said, dark and ghost have pretty much the exact same matchups even on the neutral side and they could use some variation. The exact same things you said about ghost possibly being effective against fighting apply to fairy, and that could be a great balance for the fairy type as well. They should change more of their neutral matchups though, one of dark or ghost could have an interaction with fire somewhere, electric maybe, or steel again. And finally, the poison type is finally getting good. But the one thing that would make it super oppressive and yet still make sense is your suggestion for making it super effective against water. It would have good matchups against 2 of the most defensive types, but still have a hard time against steel and ground. Though i do think poison would need an additional weakness itself. Perhaps that could also be ice to give it a better matchup too. Maybe ice could also resist poison to make it fair? I don't know, that would make plenty of types resist poison. Though being one of the types with the most interactions isn't bad.
Up until recently, I though Fairy was weak to Fire for some reason. The image in my head was a forest full of fairies being obliterated by flamethrowers. Don’t ask why, you won’t get a good answer
6. I sometimes forget that Rock doesn't resist Bug, so I agree with this change. 5. Fairy could use some more weaknesses, but I wouldn't make it weak to itself since different types of magic can hold their own against each other. I would make Fairy weak to Fire instead, since Fire already resists Fairy. 4. Water is my favorite type, so I would hate to see it get another weakness, but I agree with your logic 100%. 3. Yes! I've been saying this for years! 2. I knew there needed to be more of an interaction between Ghost and Fighting. Thank you for articulating what I couldn't. 1. I would make Ice resist Water instead, since ice is made of water so pouring water onto it should help more than hurt it (unless it's a hot water move like Scald or Steam Eruption, maybe).
That is really what bums me out about it. Dragons were the stat kings in the old days and resisted a ton of more common elements, but Ice types laid waste to them, often exploiting double weaknesses, which gave you a good reason to use one. Now Fairies just plain beat them, and are even immune to their attacks. You could even justify leaving the Ice type with its horrible defensive profile in modern games just by making it wreck Fairies, too, continuing with the "giant killer" theme. But, then I suppose that wouldn't be very fair to steel and poison. I like Ice, I just wish it was more broadly useful.
it's kinda ironic that in Genshin Impact Electro is weak to almost all other elements while Cryo resist almost all other elements which are the opposites of Electric and Ice types
6. Bug doesn't need any more nerfs frankly even if it buffs Rock. Rock should resist Electric instead since you know, rocks are insulators and all. 5. That doesn't sound right at all, even if you use the Dragon against Dragon logic. Bug should be super effective against Fairy. To help Bug mostly. 4. Absolutely agree, I've no objections, especially since water pollutes easy. 3. Again, definitely agree. Nothing much to say. 2. Please, no. Ghost types are a really great defensive type and a good offensive type. It doesn't need any kind of buff. It needs a nerf, to be specific. Like a Freeze-Dry move called Exorcism used by Psychic types. 1. Agree. Any kind of resistances for Ice would be appreciated. Against Flying and Water is mandatory, with Ground as a bonus since Ground is overpowered as an offensive type, as we've well seen with Great Tusk.
Hard agree with all of these- No talk of buffing my poor Bug types in this video ;-; I dunno what he was thinking, buffing a type by giving it a resistance to a worse type. Even despite my bias, nobody's using Bug moves against Rock types anyways. Also the "Ghost needs to be supereffective against SOMETHING" just seems like buffing Ghost for the sake of buffing Ghost. It doesn't need it.
@@bluebombs4u921 Yes but most can and Steel types need a weakness since you know, best defensive type in the game and all. It's all about the balancing, my friend...
@@GoinGreninja I'd probably go with Dragon weakness then, mostly because Dragons need a 1 up against a type other than itself. It would make sense since dragons fight humans wearing armor, can melt the steel with their breath (magically imbued since it's not fire)
Also, I disagree with #4 because pollution is a thing, but it still contains water. It's not causing a reaction with the water to change itself. It's just oil on top of water
I always felt like Bug should resist Rock instead of them being weak to it. They live under rocks without getting squished all the time and anything could be crushed with a rock if it's a big enough one.
They could do some thing completely different with ghost; abandon type chart and instead have ghost be immune to all physical moves and weak to all specials. More balanced? probably not but it would be neat.
I have been saying since I was 10 years old playing the gen one games for the first time when they came out that it is stupid that poison isn’t super effective against water I honestly hate it there is dozens upon dozens of Pokédex entries that literally state that they infect and pollute water sources making them uninhabitable. I am sure it is either muk or grimmer state that very clearly way back then. It really gets me that it isn’t. And then gen two comes along and electric isn’t super effective against steel again all the same reasons as mentioned here. I remember using my jolteon against a scizor thinking this will surely kill it and it didn’t. My exact argument was metal is super conductive just like water so why why. It made me for years hate the steel type. These two in particular need to be fixed and need it immediately
@@emperorcubone 100% agree makes absolutely no sense at all. I really need and want this to be a thing that is fixed as I like the poison type and want it to be more useful. And this is the perfect fixed.
The Ghost type is the last type that ever would need a bone since it's one of the best offensive types in the game with a pretty good defensive type to boot.
As Wolfey said in his video about fixing the Bug-type, making Bug super-effective against and resisting Fairy instead of the other way around would make both types more balanced.
Recently I've been messing with the type chart on a website & brainstorming what those different scenarios would be like if they were to happen. Here are a few of these ideas that I've settled on for now: Ice resistant to Water & takes 0× from Ice, Steel no longer resistant to itself & takes 1/2× from Poison but stays immune to poisoning status, Fairy takes 1× from Bug & resists itself, Fire no longer resistant to Fairy, Electric deals 2× to Steel & deals 1/2× to Ghost, Poison is immune to itself, Fight takes 1/2× from itself & deals 1× to Bug, Rock takes 1/2× from Bug, Bug does neutral dmg to Ghost & Fight while takes 1/2× from Fairy. Of course, I searched online as well to look for some other type matchup changes, so I came across suggestions that were mentioned in this video, such as Water becoming weak to Poison or Ghost dealing 2× to Fairy. They should definitely cr8 more moves akin to Freeze Dry (in that their main purpose is being SE vs another type that they wouldnt have otherwise) like a new Bug move that deals 2× to Ghost, a Ghost move doing SE damage on Electric, etc.
Psychic is interesting, because it was universally considered the best type at the start, but then severely punished for it, but they went a bit too far. I do think it's in a better spot then it used to be, but yeah, it could probably afford to be super effective against something else, maaaybe Normal?
Here are my thoughts: 1. Rock should resist bug (i agree) 2. Fairy should not be stronger against any other extra type. If anything another type should resist fairy and i think ice should resist it. 3. Poison should be strong against water (i agree) even though it would make 2 of the 3 starter types weak to single element. 4. Electric should be strong against steel (i agree), even though i feel like electric type is already solid and very spammable if there's nothing immune to it, the steel types need extra weakness and it makes sense with electric. 5. Ghost should not be strong against something else. If there's no normal types or dark types on enemy team, you can spam it for solid neutral hit. Dark may seem superior but dark is resisted by fairy and fighting types while ghost is not. Ghost also has only 2 weaknesses so i would say it's fine as is. If anything i would give it extra resistance to fire (because fire is OP offensively and because ghosts like the candles and flames in general doesn't bother them). 6. Ice should resist flying (i agree) but also it should resist grass, fairy and fighting. When thinking of ice don't think of thin ice. Plants have serious problems togrow in cold temperature and have you ever tried punching an iceberg? While rocks can be shattered with karate chops (mostly rocks with tiny holes), frozen solid water has different molecular structure and can't be shattered that "easily". Fighting pros are also often seen in movies toughening up under very cold waterfalls - because cold is something that beats them by default and they need to challange their bodies against it. This is why it always bothered me that fighting is strong against ice instead of resisted by it. I suppose game freak really wanted to justify that frozen status by making ice type look as a frail type. As for why it should resist fairy - same reason why fire resist fairy (fairies doesn't want their magical forests burnt nor frozen; they struggle against those natural disasters). And some more from me: 7. Just like poison should be strong on water, the water should be strong against poison too (it is similar concept to ghost vs ghost or dragon vs dragon but this time its 2 different types that have equal changes against eachother). Reason being that high amount of water can wash away or neutralize poison. There's also "healing water" so it should be an element that counters it too. I would love to see that synergy. 8. Steel type should be weak to something more then electric as an extra type. I like the idea of a type that either resist or take extra dmg from any type and rust destroys metal overtime in similar way water erosion destroys rocks (hence why water is supereffective on rock types even though pouring some water on rocks doesn't affect them in any way other then making them wet/slippery). It would be nice opportunity to even introduce the Rust status. It could work like Burn but reduce defense instead of attack. Imagine a fight where you got burned on your physical attacker but you made enemy rust and you are back to dealing considerable dmg against that target. Granted burn would be still superior in this case because you just need to burn 1 attacker while you'd need to rust every other pokemon to neutralize the debuff of burn on you. Regardless it would be nice improvement in competitive play and perhaps some people would consider inflicting rust status on themself when facing against special attackers to avoid unwanted paralyze or sleep (just a possible outcome). 9. Ground should resist fire. I am surprised it alrady doesn't do that. 10. Bug types should be strong against electric types and they should resist the electric attacks. Here's the buff for bug types that would more most sense. Think of it like of a computer bug destyroying your PC or how cockroaches can survive radiation and nuclear disasters. Yes a flying insect could be zapped by an electric lamp but thats because its Flying (type). And by that logic any living being would be weak to electric (and fire, and ice, etc). Bug types could be also strong against normal types because nobody want to have flees or thicks or other infestation. And yeah it would add 2nd weakness to normal type but think it would be nice interaction also because fighting and bug resist eachother. I don't recall having such interaction yet where 2 types resist eachother while having "common enemy" that they smash.
Dark type isn't about literal darkness but about evil instead. That's why it's weak to the Bug type, because of Kamen Rider and all that. And competitively, it'd be a complete mess since Fire is a pretty good type and with this, it just became even better.
@@GoinGreninja A the definition is more loose, it's not necessarly evil but rather... Dark? Think of some of the dark types in the game, like Absol or Darkrai, wich aren't evil per se, but are tied to "emotive darkness" (like Fear in Absol case and nightmares in Darkrai That's the best way I can put it. That aside, there's also part of the type the darkness as "night" cuz of Umbreon, wich is a dark type just because it's noctural and many moves like dark pulse. It's not the main thing the type is thought on, but it's like Fighting Type sort of rapresentatives of Justice rather than strictly martial arts... and that influenced the type chart too, so I don't see why Dark shouldn't. So it still fits And even then, a flaming passionate heart of a shounen protagonist can being him to defeat evil, still fits.
@@yurei4414 Fire isn't metaphorical like Dark. So that'd already fail in many ways. And yes, I do agree that Dark doesn't mean true evil. Some have good hearts. But most don't, that's why it's seen as the evil type.
Honestly ghost isn't in that bad of a state, yeah it's weak to dark, but up against other types, ghost more frequently pulls ahead. IMO ice should both get hit super effective by fire but also be super effective against fire, fire types don't like the cold and what happens if you put a ton of ice or snow on top of fire? It melts and puts out the fire.
Steel is not weak to electric because yeah you can get electrocuted if you hold a metal object zapped by lightning but the object itself its intact none of it has been damaged.
I think ice should resist water, as when you add water to ice, you tend to get more ice. I love your videos, and I hope you keep making banger videos. Keep up the great work 👍
Psychic NEEDS to be weak to Electric. Following the theme of Psychic Types being weak to common fears such as bugs or the dark, I think this would be fitting. Not to mention it'll boost Electric Types a bit since they don't see much casual use at the moment.
A type matchup you haven’t mentioned that I’ve always thought about are types that are super effective against each other. I would do this to 2 types: fire and ice should be super effective against each other add heat to ice it melts, take heat away from fire and it goes out. Also fire and electric should be the same, energy + energy = 💥 works both ways making things a little riskier. Also ice should be super effective against water and resist water, is it just me this makes sense to? Also ghost should beat fairy that was a missed opportunity as you said.
Yeah, I think fire resisting ice doesn't make that much sense, as if the fire's supposed to melt the ice, it'll just melt it into water, which should be super effective against it, and if the argument is that it can melt then evaporate the ice, why can't it do the same for the water, which, being melted already, should take less heat to evaporate it?
@@emperorcubone they make fairy one of the most powerful type. I agree with you that a fairy should be weak to a fairy to represent the seelie and unseelie court. Unseelie represents the maleficent and sinister fairy that does the most evil act that would give you demonetize just by listing what they represent. Dragon and fairy are both the magic type and species type similar to the ghost type but different from the psychic type.
Cubone: It's not like Bug needs to be any weaker than it already is Also Cubone: Proceeds to suggest buffs for already good types without even touching Bug
Honestly either way could work; if Ice actually hit half of all types for super effective damage that tradeoff of being weak would finally make sense...
Well, think of it this way, wind blows the snow and cause them to become snowstorm. Ice type should feel lucky that the flying type is not super effective against it
For me Dark should be super effective against Fairy. Both being weak against each other would make more sense with the entire concept of light/good VS dark/evil. Or ghost like you proposed. And ice definitely need lots of new resistances, from bug, fairy, poison and grass. I also had the same idea of Poison being super effective against Water.
@@GoinGreninja Dark main strength before Fairy used to be their defense, not attack. I'm talking about both being effective against each other, not a total buff.

I bet he has never seen the terror of a Spectrier sweep or a Gholdengo walling or a Dragapult pivot or...I can keep going with this for a while. It needs a nerf at all costs.
Being a wall is far different from offensive capabilities. Plenty of Normal types make great walls, but Normal is super effective against nothing! Ghost is a completely redundant attacking type when Dark exists so it needs another feature to set it apart...
@@emperorcubone It doesn't need offensive prowess when its neutral damage game is as threatening as the Normal type's. Ghost type offensively and defensively is one of the best types in the game. That's why buffing it in any way would wreck balance badly.
@@emperorcubone you're massively wrong in this, ghost is basically the offensive version of how normal types are defensive while this is true, being able to hit everything is SIGNIFICANTLY better that being able to be hit by everything. If you really want to buff ghost that bad, you at least have to add more resists to it.
dark and ghost being different defensively is enough to set them apart. some types are more defensive oriented, some are more offense, some are balanced psychic should resist fairy though
Yeah psychic is in a really bad spot. It's got the second worst weakness/resist ratio after ice, and it's weaknesses being dark, ghost and bug is just rough. Knock and u-turn being the most spammable most and ghost being the most spammable offensive type, even more so with the removal of pursuit. Just makes everything really difficult for the psychic type rn. Especially when dark and steel are almost mandatory on evert competitive team rn
I agree with the Psychic idea. But Ghost really needs another aspect to it to stand out offensively from Dark; Ghost should be more than a shadowy Normal counter, otherwise there's no need to ever use a Shadow Ball for coverage when a Dark Pulse does the work just as well or better...
@Emperor Cubone I would greatly disagree on the two being that similar. The fact that what resists then is different changes their use completely. Ghost is actually better to have stab on due to hitting all but 2 types for at least neutral (1of which isn't relevant), while dark is better coverage due to better moves. But as a stab has major limitations due to the prevalence of defensive fairies and fighting types.
@@emperorcubone it already is distinct from dark, dark is much worse offensively because three types resist it, including the second best type in the game in fairy. Meanwhile the only way to stop ghosts is dark types or normal types that are much rare
I think Ice should be immune to itself. I think it also needs more resistances but making it the only type that is immune to itself would make it slightly unique. It would also make dual Ice types like Kyurem, Abomasnow and others, who are normally effected by Ice, much stronger
I think Fire should be super effective against rock. Being both weak and super effective sounds good to me. Also, you need fire to smelt rock, so scientifically it works as well. Then get a future pokemon with an ability that when hit by a fire type, it turns into the steel type
I can see ice resisting water as well, that'd be nice to see the two types resisting each other as technically they're the same thing just one is liquid and the other one is solid. 😂
Ice should resist fairy, water, flying and maybe grass (I say maybe for grass because grass does not need any nerfing) Winter is basically the "death season" for plants and is often shown as very scary for fey creatures so I think that makes sense (you could also make Ice SE against fairy if you really wanted to, but that's not as needed) You already explained Ice resisting flying And typically you either need the water to be really hot or super pressurised to do much to break or melt Ice Also not related to anything directly mentioned in the video but... bug and grass resisting fairy. Fey creatures love nature and bugs and all that, so they probably don't do too well trying to destroy what's essentially a close cousin duo. Those two will skyrocket in viability on the spot, and fairy will no longer be just unstoppable
Ice should resist water, because all water does to ice is move it. Bug should be weak to ice, because bugs can not handle the cold and need warm places to thrive.
I feel like flying being immune to ground makes sense in hindsight but at the same time there are ground moves that involve physically throughing said groundmat the opponent so the only way that shouldn’t at all effect you is if you dodge it
I also think electric being super effective against steel makes sense. However the reasoning might be that electric charge travels along the outside surface of conductive material and doesn't penetrate the material, this is why the inside of a car is considered safe, but not ideal during a lightning storm.
I think that electric is neutral to steel because it's such a good conductor of electricity. The power flows through the steel type straight toward ground, because that's what electricity does, quickest way to ground.
Ice should also resist grass because most plants die if the temperature isn't right, and plants that surive the cold are either evergreens that are hardy enough to survive and plants that go dormant doring winter
Ice needs more than just one resist, I don't get why it doesn't resist Grass and bug, maybe even water because most of pokedex data says how they lower the temperature of the surrounding areas, meaning most water attacks would be little than powder.
I just had an idea, ice resisting and being super effective against fairy, because fairies gain magic from nature and wintrr is usually devestating in fairy tales. It also makes my favorite type slightly better
A woodpecker could break through Ice though if you give it enough time… I would also like to see Normal be super effective against something, otherwise there isn’t really much point to using them
I think for ice, having it have a move that is super effective against fire or an ability that does that would be cool, you melt ice and it turns to water which of course kills fire; so it would be neat
Ok, about steel not being weak to electric while water is. When an electric current passes through water it breaks the water molecule and when it passes through metal it mostly preserves the molecular structure of the material.
For rock resisting bug: Tbh I think bug should be neutral against rock for the same reason bug resists ground - bugs are able to dig in stones and build their nests inside (not all kinds of ground are soft many bugs dig their hiding spots in rocks). They do not destroy the stone, but they also don't struggle with digging inside of it... For Ghost being strong on fighting/fairy: I think fairy is the better option both logically and in term of balancing... In term of balance it gives ghost more offensive usage while also nerfing fairy a bit. in term of logic, fairy usually refers to magical and cute yet mischievous creatures that wonder the forests while ghosts are mysterious entities from the beyond who are known for their tricks and illusions. Trying to scare everyone with stuff like possession and illusions. I just think it makes sense fairies cuteness wouldn't match something scary, while ghosts just outclass them in most things... Being better at pranks and tricks, protecting their forest better and even using powers from the moon better Besides, Fighting already has 3 weaknesses and a type that is immune to it so a 4th one really isn't a must-have. Although I must admit, I was surprised to see bug was not one of the types you included here considering how terrible it is offensively. I think bug should be resisted by much less things (fighting and fairy shouldn't resist bug... and while I get ghosts aren't scared of bugs and that's why they resist it - I don't think bugs power come only from scaring others...)
Tbh if game freak will do a this type is both strong against and weak against this type again I feel it’s going to ice and water if the environment is cold water freezes but if it’s not cold then the ice melts
In traditional fairy folklore from the English/Welsh/Scottish regions fairies are generally immune to other forms of magic. That said iron (steel in Pokémon’s case) and fire are ways to get rid of them, so in that regard Fairy should be weak to fire as the myths state of the same culture.
Steel not being weak Electric does make sense, since metal is a really good conductor of electricity, electricity just smoothly passes through it without causing any sparks or whatsoever. Pure water does not conduct electricity well, it's the impurities in water that conduct it, so electricity doesn't smoothly pass through water, that's why water type is weak to electric. On top of that, the lower an object's resistance is, the less heat it produces when electricity passes through it, since the amount of heat produced is proportional to the resistance of the object electricity passes through.Metals can have a million times less resistance than a non-metal. You can see how lightning rods are barely damaged by lightning (unless it's flawed or too small for the lightning strike) so electricity melting steel by producing heat is also not an option. Although by that logic grass would be weak against electric, but GameFreak's logic here is that Trees have roots that can send the electricity to the ground.
Fairy should absolutely not resist bug, but gamefreak hates bug, so...
No, it makes sense, but bugs should resist fairy too
@@marcoasturias8520 It's not about it "making sense" it's about balance. And Bug did NOT need another type to resist it.

Tbh I just want Ice to have more resistances. I think it’s strange that Ice only has one resistance: itself
That's because it used to be a counterpart to Dragon
Dragon was a strong defensive typying with it being resistant to all three starter types and Electric, but at the balancement that it's rather poor offensively, being strong only againt itself.
@@Jeremypixel the really stupid thing is, most of the time water types dont care about the STAB either, they are usually hitting a 4 times weakness.
I really think Water should be weak to Ice and Ice should resist water instead of Water resisting Ice and doing everything an Ice type can do but better.
@@williammell845 Or at the very least ice resisting water, it doesn't make much sense it only works one way. Water is OP anyway.
@@RedDragonForce2 could have scald and steam eruption do what freeze-dry does and be super-effective against water while replasing the 30% burn chance
@@RedDragonForce2 yes and no, hot water melds ice yes, but hot water freezes faster than cold or room temp. water (cause water is weird).
I'm a diehard fan of idea 2.
I think the Bug resistance stays in, but make the bugs resist fairy
I agree ice needs some love, and that makes the most sense!
Poison does too and I love the idea of it being super effective to water!
It shocked me to my core when I found out Poison was ONLY super effective against Grass until Gen 6! Like, what are we doing here? Why does this type even exist if there's nowhere to use it?
Poison should of def been super effective to water BC idk..... Pollution?
That’s saying Ice should be super effective against Water too. (Even though Freeze Dry is a thing)
@@thatman666 how is that a similar comparison at all though?
They could both be super effective against water! :)
9 relationship changes I'd do (and one type bonus addition), alphabetical by defending type:
*Fairy no longer resist Bug* - just to buff Bug
*Ghost no longer resist Bug* - no reason for this resistance
*Grass resist Fairy* - not particularly harmed by life and growth magic, and should benefit from it
*Ice resist Electric* - ice and snow are poor conductors, it is harder for lightning to form in cold environments
*Ice resist Fairy* - resist life and growth magic
*Ice resist Grass* - resist life and growth energy
*Psychic resist Poison* - the "mind over matter" rationale people use for why Psychic is super effective is far more of a reason for Psychic to resist Poison
*Psychic* - immune to the Confused status
*Steel weak to Electric* - electrical conductivity
*Water weak to Poison* - it's "poison", and water is needed for life
Potentially:
Normal weak to Poison - it's "poison", but making Poison SE against the three most common types might be too much
And have a lot of new abilities and moves, like Extremophile (resist Fire, Ice, and Rock), Pollen Protection (resist Flying and Bug), Invasive (immune to entry hazards), etc.
Ooh, yeah Grass resisting Fairy would help out a whole lot!
Now i know what to watch while eating

Ghost having more super effective coverage would be cool and all
but I think the last thing we need to make ghost STAB more spammable than it already is.

So then flip Ghost so that it's weak to Psychic and beats Dark? I could see that...

Especially combinations like Ice-Ground would be even better than before.
Ice should resist water as well. I mean, pouring water on ice just adds another layer of ice.
And while I don't think Ice should be super effective against water, I'd say that maybe water types should have higher odds of being frozen solid.
Doesn't pouring water onto ice often cause it to crack?
What about Frostbite? That Status from Legends Arceus? That lowers Special Attack.
the better idea is just to make ice and water resist each other (as water already does)

I think water need massive nerf by lose resistance againts ice and attack resisted by ice.
Time ago I watched a video about rebalancing the type chart, and there was the suggestion of making Fighting weak to Poison (illness can outmatch even strong fighters), or Psychic resisting Fairy (facts against fantasy)
Poison does resist Fighting, so you might be onto something there...
Emperor cubone coming out strong with his hate for the bug type.
Yep. Not a single buff for the Bug type. Not even something simple like removing Fairy type's resistance against Bug types for some reason or even better, making them super effective against Fairy types since they don't like icky stuff and all.
If bug gained resistances to dark and psychic
Remove fighting and fairy non super effective
Bug would be workable
Defensively worse than grass, and similar offensively
Difference is BST and utility
That's why high BST, genesect, volcarona, scisor, all good with high BST
Rimimbee and Shiinotic were good due to utility
Just have higher BST, it would make a large difference
Yeah, some Water could melt Ice, but also Ice could freeze some Water so if they resisted each other it would make sense.
@@emperorcubone at least they got freeze dry. Giving them 5 type advantage
I could see steel being weak to electric since some metals are electric conductors
I like a lot of the ideas like poison being super effective against water, electric being super effective against steel and ice resisting flying, but ghost has a big role and not outclassed by dark in the meta. Ghost hitting almost everything for neutral damage is huge.
Yeah. Even with its lackluster super effective matchup. It's one of the best offensive types
Thank you for finally giving me a way to put Electric on Steel into words.

10:17 Ice should also resist water, ice is pretty much solidified water, the same exact thing as what ice is so it makes sense.
Up until recently, I though Fairy was weak to Fire for some reason. The image in my head was a forest full of fairies being obliterated by flamethrowers. Don’t ask why, you won’t get a good answer
I mean, it makes sense to me. Fire already resists it...
I think another Problem the Ice Type has is that it has lost its niche in being best against dragon
@@gargervon8697 Maybe they should remove the stupid immunity from fairy and give ice a resistance to dragon
it's kinda ironic that in Genshin Impact Electro is weak to almost all other elements while Cryo resist almost all other elements which are the opposites of Electric and Ice types

Why are the fairies that protect the forest able to damage it normally.

Why does ice not resist water or grass?
Because Gamefreak hates the Ice type, clearly.
Grass has enough problems. Water has no excuse.
What are your thoughts on the psychic type?I think it's better for it to be buff offensively
Psychic is interesting, because it was universally considered the best type at the start, but then severely punished for it, but they went a bit too far. I do think it's in a better spot then it used to be, but yeah, it could probably afford to be super effective against something else, maaaybe Normal?
Psychic spam is a thing so no
Here are my thoughts:
1. Rock should resist bug (i agree)
And some more from me:
Fire should be effective against dark.
-you can see in the dark with fire
-fire doesn’t cast a shadow
But id love to hear about the competitive aspect
Dark type isn't about literal darkness but about evil instead. That's why it's weak to the Bug type, because of Kamen Rider and all that. And competitively, it'd be a complete mess since Fire is a pretty good type and with this, it just became even better.
@@GoinGreninja
A the definition is more loose, it's not necessarly evil but rather... Dark? Think of some of the dark types in the game, like Absol or Darkrai, wich aren't evil per se, but are tied to "emotive darkness" (like Fear in Absol case and nightmares in Darkrai
That's the best way I can put it.
So it still fits
And even then, a flaming passionate heart of a shounen protagonist can being him to defeat evil, still fits.
@@GoinGreninja ooh ok thanks
@@yurei4414 Fire isn't metaphorical like Dark. So that'd already fail in many ways. And yes, I do agree that Dark doesn't mean true evil. Some have good hearts. But most don't, that's why it's seen as the evil type.
a thief is reveal in lit room.
First time commenting on one of your videos, but that was an excellent Doctor Who reference at the end. Love it! Great video.
I love that episode...
But its still water putting out the fire. What happens if you melt ice? It turns into water.
Keep up the great work 👍
It more of which is more the bodies of water or the temperature of the surroundings. It would resist each other
Thank you! At the very least there should be an Ice exclusive ability that gets buffed every time it's hit with a Water attack...
It would be a lot more useful on an Ice type than the similar ability Water Compaction is on Pallosand, in my opinion.
I think the logic behind Fire resisting Ice is that their natural body heat protects against the cold.
Oh Cubone!, you came up with a splendid video idea today. Bravo! Bravo Emperor!
I think Ice should resist Fairy, nerf Fairy and buff Ice at the same time. And Fairies, like plants, probably can't handle extreme cold
Besides the ice queen and Cailleach
It's almost like balancing the type chart is why Fairy came around in the first place! Weird that they missed that...
Grass would make more sense.
Cubone: It's not like Bug needs to be any weaker than it already is
Also Cubone: Proceeds to suggest buffs for already good types without even touching Bug
Either Ice should Resist Flying… or at least make Ice Strong against Water
Honestly either way could work; if Ice actually hit half of all types for super effective damage that tradeoff of being weak would finally make sense...
Ice is already broken offensively if it is effective against water it would be too much. Just look at how many mons are broken with freeze dry
@@EmersonCRVG Well… maybe it should resist Water?
I considered having Ice mutually resist Water, because of the density differences
This would also make a lot of sense...
Fairy: + Psychic weakness
- Bug resist
Ghost: - Bug resist
+ Psychic resist
Ice: + Water resist
+ Ground resist
+ Dragon resist (take from Steel)
Grass: + Fairy resist
they can start by making water types weak to ice types because ice freezes water just like in Genshin Impact
Dark is a great offensive type. It doesn't need a buff.
@@GoinGreninja Dark main strength before Fairy used to be their defense, not attack. I'm talking about both being effective against each other, not a total buff.
@@AnonymousAnonposter But now it's attack. Things change and because of that, a buff to their attack is a terrible idea. Do you want Kingambit to be even more overpowered than he already is?
Poison over here with a move called acid that steel Pokemon are immune to which will never cease to trigger my biscuits.
No way you want to buff ghost. It's a great type as it is
I bet he has never seen the terror of a Spectrier sweep or a Gholdengo walling or a Dragapult pivot or...I can keep going with this for a while.
Ghost is already a strong offensive type for its neutral coverage. Buffing it would make it broken imho.
dark and ghost being different defensively is enough to set them apart. some types are more defensive oriented, some are more offense, some are balanced
psychic should resist fairy though
Yeah psychic is in a really bad spot. It's got the second worst weakness/resist ratio after ice, and it's weaknesses being dark, ghost and bug is just rough. Knock and u-turn being the most spammable most and ghost being the most spammable offensive type, even more so with the removal of pursuit.
Just makes everything really difficult for the psychic type rn. Especially when dark and steel are almost mandatory on evert competitive team rn
Is _"I don't believe in fairies = faries die"_ the reasoning behind Psychic resisting Fairy?
Rock should resist electric. Ice should resist water and flying. Bug should deal super effective hits to fairy and resist fairy attacks.
I think Ice should be immune to itself. I think it also needs more resistances but making it the only type that is immune to itself would make it slightly unique. It would also make dual Ice types like Kyurem, Abomasnow and others, who are normally effected by Ice, much stronger
Lmao I misheard "discussion" as "disaster" in the beginning, tbh it still fits 😂
I think Fire should be super effective against rock. Being both weak and super effective sounds good to me. Also, you need fire to smelt rock, so scientifically it works as well. Then get a future pokemon with an ability that when hit by a fire type, it turns into the steel type
I mean, how many Dex entries have we seen talk about Fire types melting boulders? It just needs to get hot enough...
@@emperorcubone Charizard is the main one that I think of.
I can see ice resisting water as well, that'd be nice to see the two types resisting each other as technically they're the same thing just one is liquid and the other one is solid. 😂
Ice should resist fairy, water, flying and maybe grass (I say maybe for grass because grass does not need any nerfing)
Winter is basically the "death season" for plants and is often shown as very scary for fey creatures so I think that makes sense (you could also make Ice SE against fairy if you really wanted to, but that's not as needed)
You already explained Ice resisting flying
And typically you either need the water to be really hot or super pressurised to do much to break or melt Ice
Also not related to anything directly mentioned in the video but... bug and grass resisting fairy. Fey creatures love nature and bugs and all that, so they probably don't do too well trying to destroy what's essentially a close cousin duo. Those two will skyrocket in viability on the spot, and fairy will no longer be just unstoppable
Agree. Fairy and spring should fear winter.
And be at starter can have they're compliment secondary typing B fairy, fighting, and ice
Ghost type should be super effective against Electric because it’s a trope where Ghosts messes around with lights and electricity
Ice should resist water, because all water does to ice is move it.
Bug should be weak to ice, because bugs can not handle the cold and need warm places to thrive.
I feel like flying being immune to ground makes sense in hindsight but at the same time there are ground moves that involve physically throughing said groundmat the opponent so the only way that shouldn’t at all effect you is if you dodge it
Was quite surprised you didn't mention birds migrating during the winter as justification for flying being weak to ice
That too; there's so many good reasons why it would make sense!
I feel like that would hurt Grass more than help Ice.
After years of watching your videos, i started playing Pokémon X and Y, and found out where your intro and outro theme comes from
Ice needs more than just one resist, I don't get why it doesn't resist Grass and bug, maybe even water because most of pokedex data says how they lower the temperature of the surrounding areas, meaning most water attacks would be little than powder.
Yeah, a lot of things could reasonably fit into place to make Ice better, just pick one and we'll be happier!
@@emperorcubone exactly, especially as they seemingly think Ice is defensive...
*glares at BOTH Avalugs forms*
There's a Fighting - Rock - Psychic triangle at the end, I'm guessing it's an error but it would be effective to throw rocks at a psychic's head
For me ice should resist water, grass and bug. And ghost and fairy being super effective agaisnt fairy are intersting ideas
"You will probably die before you ever see it" I have had pokemon frozen a lot
I just had an idea, ice resisting and being super effective against fairy, because fairies gain magic from nature and wintrr is usually devestating in fairy tales.
It also makes my favorite type slightly better
A woodpecker could break through Ice though if you give it enough time…
I would also like to see Normal be super effective against something, otherwise there isn’t really much point to using them
I think for ice, having it have a move that is super effective against fire or an ability that does that would be cool, you melt ice and it turns to water which of course kills fire; so it would be neat
#4 on the ranking makes SO much sense! I wish I thought of that.
Being better at pranks and tricks, protecting their forest better and even using powers from the moon better
Besides, Fighting already has 3 weaknesses and a type that is immune to it so a 4th one really isn't a must-have.
