After watching this, I had several design change ideas.. 1) why not drill through the caps and silicone seal them instead of the bottle necks? Makes resealing and repressurizing possible. 2) add banding or shrink wrap around the edges to ensure it stays together structurally. 3) add 1-2 ounces of sand per bottle. Maybe 15-20 lbs total. Will make raft heavier, but increase stability on water. 4) put the green bottles in a pattern amongst the clear bottles to form your logo, name, or something geometric.
All great ideas!! 1) I tried every possible adhesive out there in order to be able to use the lid which was the easiest simplest method, but no adhesive would stick to the polypropylene caps. The bottles are PET and silicone adheres to it nicely. In the end after much testing that's why I went with this method. 2) yes, you could but I wanted to keep it simple. 3) I also wanted to keep it light weight. 4) I thought of that after gluing the last bottle. Darn. Would have been cool! Thanks!
Along the same thoughts here. Ring it with plastic banding, use sealed drain tile, add pvc cornerposts...but then, there are so many ways to chase it to innovate.
@@justinbremer2281 That would be cool! Like H-Punch jugs. They are large and square. A lot would depend on structural integrity based on the particular jugs geometry. If you wanted to use those large Gatorade jugs, they would withstand almost anything and last for a long time.

Square bottles, like Fiji Water, might block most of the air. You could also leave the lids off and put one small string light in each bottle to light up the walls.

Build it in more of a 3-D structure and cover it with the shrink wrap used to overwinter boats. Add a transom board in the back and you can put a motor on your new skiff.
Very clever, and a fun video. I liked your method of pressurizing the bottles. Using the goop as a valve/seal was brilliant. I have pressurized bottles by putting them in a freezer before putting the cap on, and also by putting a bit of dry ice in each one. Your method was best because it inflated the flattened bottles. As for propelling your raft, yes, a pole would be good - I have done many a day of canoe poling. If you scull with your paddle - swish it side-to-side and twist so it's flying each way - you could get better use out of it over the front. Me, I'd put an oar over the back and scull with it. I'm tempted to use this method to build DIY floating dock sections, covering the "rafts" with a pressure treated wood apron and deacking to fit snugly over.

All this guy did was take 1000 bottles out of the cycle, forcing 1000 bottles worth of new material to be produced, and twice the amount of (eventual) pollution. Reuse is the second step. Recycle is the one that really makes the difference. If he recycled the bottles after making the raft, that's not De-Cycling, but it would have been difficult to get all the silicone out of them. The people who cut them up to make string and clothes, or build houses out of plastic instead of stone are just ignorantly causing a lot of additional harm via oil drilling, refining, energy costs, and doubling the amount pollution for every bottle they use. Again, the whole point is that it's a cycle. Imagine if I said I was a hero of the water cycle because I collected my run off and sent it into space where it couldn't collect pollution and transport it to the ocean. That might sound good, but only if you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. The main difference between building a house out of bottles and throwing them in a landfill is, eventually we are likely to go mine the landfills for resources, but the house De-Cycles the materials indefinitely. The point of recycling is to put the plastic back into a cycle, rather than constantly producing new bottles. Taking material out of the cycle does the opposite, by insuring that those bottles will never again be used to create new ones, so the new ones come from.... Oil refineries. Great job keeping BP in business, terrible job helping the environment.

I love the effort you put into making such a great craft! Its not like some DIYs that take's all day just to gather up your supplies. Also, the speed up time when you are peeling off the labels, and glueing all the bottles together looks neat! :-)
Because it only seems like a good idea if you don't know anything about recycling or building rafts. The raft isn't very good. The shape of the bottom might make it stable, but you'll spend 5 times the energy paddling to get practically nowhere. It would be much easier to build a better raft out of wood. And, so far as recycling, this is the exact opposite of recycling. Probably more harmful to the environment than putting the bottles in a landfill or just throwing them straight in the ocean without the silicone. Because at least then, someone else might eventually collect them, and use them to make new bottles. This way, the new ones have to be produced by new plastic, which comes from oil refineries, which are filled by tanker ships, that come from off shore oil drilling platforms. In short, the guy failed to understand the basics of raft building, and the basics of recycling. Only fools would call this a great idea. It's a silly novelty, that encourages the ignorant to build terrible and extremely ecologicaly impactful rafts that aren't even comfortable or nice to look at.

The idea is cool, but all this guy did was take 1000 bottles out of the recycling bin and put them in the ocean. Literally.... It's not a cycle unless the plastic goes back to make new bottles. If it doesn't, new plastic must be produced instead.
sherry, a house could be made with this process as long as you could anchor the plastic to the floor and at least seal the outer part to keep bugs out.
Oh man this totally works. We did something like this with a crap ton of 2L bottles when we was moving big rocks in the back of my country house to help break up the waves hitting the back of the house. We used ropes to help hold everything together and we put a plywood on top to prevent the rocks from breaking the bottles.
I love long projects like this. The feeling at the end when it's all done is amazing. This must have been incredibly gratifying! What do you suppose would have happened if you hadn't inflated the bottles? If they weren't crushed at all to begin with, and just had regular air pressure?

Wow that's incredibly amazing! You could make a boat out of it. Well maybe use it as a reinforcement for a boat so it wouldn't tilt so much thus making it more stable even if you stand on it. I dont know how that would be or go about and i would to see one made! Great Job! this is one of those DIY innovations you can rely on.
Actually not a bad idea! About 5-7layers thick and about a mile long and wide, that's a small village! Plus it wouldn't be hard to build onto. And we have more than enough waste plastic this could literally be an idea. Too bad it wont happen because literally only between 70-90% of waste plastic actually gets recycled which means the rest is probably incinerated. And I think bigger companies make money to do it so no way that's happening anytime soon lol
This is a neat project. I would bever have guessed that silicone would be enough to bind the bottles together. I'd love to see the platform skinned with some clear material for further strength and topped with comfy foam!
couldnt you sacrifice one of the bottles and use the plastic to melt and weld the other bottles together, instead of using silicone? im just assuming that if you melt the plastic between 2 bottles, it would weld them together when it cools. ive seen a russian guy use strips of bottle plastic to wrap around other plastic pieces and heat shrink it to bond them together.

Silicone provides a flexible connection point you need that because for example the raft will deflect ( bown down in the centre) when weight is loaded on it Even so the silicone gun is so practical to quickly apply lots of it in very regular amounts
funny, the whole time you were building, my thoughts were how perfect this would be for housing if you could figure out how to anchor it down to floor and seal the external ends to keep bugs out since your demonstration showed water coming through when you jumped on it. such a great idea. you make me want to try and make a small shed to see if it works. my problem is i dont drink soda and i dont know anyplace to get good bottles like you did.
Hello Chris, and thank you for the video! It's obvious that a lot of trial and error and prep went into the different aspects of this project before coming together. I would like to ask if you're interested in doing a follow-up video, showing some or all of the below: 1) Longevity of the bond between the bottles 2) UV resistance. I know one limiting factor is the bottle, depending on the brand. But it'd be interesting to study the integrity of the silicone valves and bonding 3) Impact of the seasonal cycles of temperature 4) Optimum size of the raft to prevent overloading or overflexing the bond between bottles in a slightly wavy environment. Like for example the wake of a nearby boat. 5) Methods to tie several of these rafts together (as opposed to building a monolythic structure that overloads some bottles when subjected to small waves or wake of a passing boat) 6) Methods and ideas for laying a relatively lightweight top surface for better weight distribution (and safety/comfort). I don't need to go to a community center. I have been collecting all types of plastic containers for ages, with the hope to build several floating projects. I eventually concluded that not all are fit for the purpose, as some deteriorate quickly from UV rays, even though they're supposed to resist the same when they're labeled the same. Oh well. So in short, I have selected the Costco Kirkland water bottle, which I now have thousands of, waiting to be upcycled. Some questions, if you would be so kind to answer: 1) These bottles are 12 inches high and cylindrical in shape, roughly 2.75 inch diameter, with thick and non crinkly straight walls for nearly 10 inches. It's labeled as PET. Would you recommend a bead of silicone rather than 3 distinct blobs for bonding adjacent bottles? 2) My first intent is a floating boardwalk onto a pond where water levels vary significantly with the seasons. Therefore the rafts would settle on hard surface for part of the year. Picture a boardwalk that is several hundred feet long, made up of small sections (rafts) that are tied together, optimally sized so when they are resting on ondulating dry terrain, they're not going to fall apart when a person steps on them. Perhaps I should have started with this description :) I think now you see why I asked for all the items above :) Do you have recommendations? I'll be experimenting and testing different sizes, but thought you may have insight to jumpstart my work and I thank you in advance I'm sure you've already thought of the potential of your project, even though many see it as entertainment. I'm truly committed to exploiting this method for a real life sustainability solution and so I hope to hear back from you ALSO....Let's get you to 5 million views really soon!! All the best, Tarek
All good questions. 1) Don't know but I do know silicone is for interior and exterior and in my experience holds up for years. 2) These bottles do degrade in sunlight but again can go for years. 3) Don't know but PET is very robust and should do fine through cold hot cycles. 4) Don't know but the size I had made was pretty stable. Another foot each way would have been nice. 5) That's a good question. I'm not sure how you could attach each separate unit together. 6) First thing that comes to mind is to use Coroplast. Coroplast is plastic cardboard. You'd need to test it to see if it can be adhered with silicone. Silicone will not stick to some plastics. 1)These bottles could work but you need to do some testing to see the max pressure they can take and then decide on a low pressure to go with then do some testing to see how much silicone is best.....a bead or blobs. 2) This one I definitely can't answer! You'd need to make one raft and then do a bunch of stress tests yourself on uneven terrain to see the max abuse they can take. This all sounds like a great project to use your brain, hands and creativity. Even if each step fails , it's all about experimenting and trying different things to see what works. Good luck.

Love this and your creative thinking!! Maybe if you ever try this again you could make the raft more aerodynamic like a canoe so it would be easier to navigate with a paddle? Just a suggestion. So many uses for things we just “throw” away. Have you seen they make bricks out of plastic bottles for homes? What a great solution from waste to shelter.
Have you seen soda bottle twine? With a jig and a razor you can make long strips that can be used as lashing. I've always wanted to do this but I figured that I would use the soda bottles as Rope to tie them all together. It's a lot more work but I like completely free projects.

Now make 3 more sections, put them together, and add a sail out of some recycled bubble wrap. Go fishing, and if you get bored you can pop bubble wrap. Add a rudder and a lawn chair. Tada!
Wow that's what I call recycling that was a lot of work! Good job. That is something that kids could help do adult supervision during the summer time as a project. I'm sure there's enough people in the neighborhood that would be glad to give away their 2 liter bottles.
Next you need a plane carrying inventory from Home Depot to crash and hopefully they have enough silicone adhesive on board as well as the appropriate hardware to use it with.
Bickety Bam... 🤔 Nah, if a plane crashed in this scenario, I’d pivot - and collect all of that busted up aluminum, MacGyver the heck out of it - hack myself a sailing canoe... and sail all the home. Those pop bottles rounded up earlier would then be used to capture rain water to quench my thirst from all of that strenuous work😁

Is that because of the deposit on the bottles? Here in South Africa one would be hard pressed to collect that many bottles in a reasonable amount of time, because scavengers collect them for recycling.
@@denverdazzle5131 that’s untrue. I literally live in a state where they’ve been doing that for decades. The problem is that the majority of states don’t have a deposit on bottles, so while New York may not ever recycle and still uses garbage barges, over here in Oregon we are all HIGHLY encouraged to recycle.
Damn! This is ingenious! I'm considering doing that myself and adding sides to it to make a fishing raft. How many bottles does it take to make that raft? By the way, I would totally seal the caps to prevent leakage.

Because it only seems like a good idea if you don't know anything about recycling or building rafts.
The raft isn't very good. The shape of the bottom might make it stable, but you'll spend 5 times the energy paddling to get practically nowhere.
It would be much easier to build a better raft out of wood.
And, so far as recycling, this is the exact opposite of recycling. Probably more harmful to the environment than putting the bottles in a landfill or just throwing them straight in the ocean without the silicone.
Because at least then, someone else might eventually collect them, and use them to make new bottles. This way, the new ones have to be produced by new plastic, which comes from oil refineries, which are filled by tanker ships, that come from off shore oil drilling platforms.
In short, the guy failed to understand the basics of raft building, and the basics of recycling.
Only fools would call this a great idea.
It's a silly novelty, that encourages the ignorant to build terrible and extremely ecologicaly impactful rafts that aren't even comfortable or nice to look at.

The idea is cool, but all this guy did was take 1000 bottles out of the recycling bin and put them in the ocean.

It's not a cycle unless the plastic goes back to make new bottles. If it doesn't, new plastic must be produced instead.
sherry, a house could be made with this process as long as you could anchor the plastic to the floor and at least seal the outer part to keep bugs out.
Oh man this totally works. We did something like this with a crap ton of 2L bottles when we was moving big rocks in the back of my country house to help break up the waves hitting the back of the house. We used ropes to help hold everything together and we put a plywood on top to prevent the rocks from breaking the bottles.

What do you suppose would have happened if you hadn't inflated the bottles? If they weren't crushed at all to begin with, and just had regular air pressure?

Wow that's incredibly amazing! You could make a boat out of it. Well maybe use it as a reinforcement for a boat so it wouldn't tilt so much thus making it more stable even if you stand on it. I dont know how that would be or go about and i would to see one made! Great Job! this is one of those DIY innovations you can rely on.

Actually not a bad idea! About 5-7layers thick and about a mile long and wide, that's a small village! Plus it wouldn't be hard to build onto. And we have more than enough waste plastic this could literally be an idea. Too bad it wont happen because literally only between 70-90% of waste plastic actually gets recycled which means the rest is probably incinerated. And I think bigger companies make money to do it so no way that's happening anytime soon lol

The silicone seal was a really good, simple idea.
The testing I did before hand showed it to be very strong. How it lasts in the sun and water over a long period is another thing.
@@chrisnotap I imagine you experimented with drilling the cap and sealing that. What made drilling the bottle neck necessary as opposed to the cap?

I just put mine in platic milk crates, then turned the crates upside-down and tied them together with zip ties.
That is actually a good way to hold it all together. Increases the weight but oh well.

couldnt you sacrifice one of the bottles and use the plastic to melt and weld the other bottles together, instead of using silicone? im just assuming that if you melt the plastic between 2 bottles, it would weld them together when it cools. ive seen a russian guy use strips of bottle plastic to wrap around other plastic pieces and heat shrink it to bond them together.

@@shadowsilverlight1651good thought, but : brittle. The PET bottle plastic is brittle once it has been melted. Silicone provides a flexible connection point you need that because for example the raft will deflect ( bown down in the centre) when weight is loaded on it
Even so the silicone gun is so practical to quickly apply lots of it in very regular amounts
funny, the whole time you were building, my thoughts were how perfect this would be for housing if you could figure out how to anchor it down to floor and seal the external ends to keep bugs out since your demonstration showed water coming through when you jumped on it. such a great idea. you make me want to try and make a small shed to see if it works. my problem is i dont drink soda and i dont know anyplace to get good bottles like you did.
Just check out your local community centre and ask if they have many bottles after a weekend dance or wedding. Be sure to ask they keep the caps too!

Hello Chris, and thank you for the video! It's obvious that a lot of trial and error and prep went into the different aspects of this project before coming together. I would like to ask if you're interested in doing a follow-up video, showing some or all of the below:
1) Longevity of the bond between the bottles
2) UV resistance. I know one limiting factor is the bottle, depending on the brand. But it'd be interesting to study the integrity of the silicone valves and bonding
3) Impact of the seasonal cycles of temperature
4) Optimum size of the raft to prevent overloading or overflexing the bond between bottles in a slightly wavy environment. Like for example the wake of a nearby boat.
5) Methods to tie several of these rafts together (as opposed to building a monolythic structure that overloads some bottles when subjected to small waves or wake of a passing boat)
6) Methods and ideas for laying a relatively lightweight top surface for better weight distribution (and safety/comfort).
I don't need to go to a community center. I have been collecting all types of plastic containers for ages, with the hope to build several floating projects. I eventually concluded that not all are fit for the purpose, as some deteriorate quickly from UV rays, even though they're supposed to resist the same when they're labeled the same. Oh well. So in short, I have selected the Costco Kirkland water bottle, which I now have thousands of, waiting to be upcycled. Some questions, if you would be so kind to answer:
1) These bottles are 12 inches high and cylindrical in shape, roughly 2.75 inch diameter, with thick and non crinkly straight walls for nearly 10 inches. It's labeled as PET. Would you recommend a bead of silicone rather than 3 distinct blobs for bonding adjacent bottles?
2) My first intent is a floating boardwalk onto a pond where water levels vary significantly with the seasons. Therefore the rafts would settle on hard surface for part of the year. Picture a boardwalk that is several hundred feet long, made up of small sections (rafts) that are tied together, optimally sized so when they are resting on ondulating dry terrain, they're not going to fall apart when a person steps on them. Perhaps I should have started with this description :) I think now you see why I asked for all the items above :) Do you have recommendations? I'll be experimenting and testing different sizes, but thought you may have insight to jumpstart my work and I thank you in advance

All good questions.
1) Don't know but I do know silicone is for interior and exterior and in my experience holds up for years.
2) These bottles do degrade in sunlight but again can go for years.
3) Don't know but PET is very robust and should do fine through cold hot cycles.
4) Don't know but the size I had made was pretty stable. Another foot each way would have been nice.
5) That's a good question. I'm not sure how you could attach each separate unit together.
6) First thing that comes to mind is to use Coroplast. Coroplast is plastic cardboard. You'd need to test it to see if it can be adhered with silicone. Silicone will not stick to some plastics.
1)These bottles could work but you need to do some testing to see the max pressure they can take and then decide on a low pressure to go with then do some testing to see how much silicone is best.....a bead or blobs.
2) This one I definitely can't answer! You'd need to make one raft and then do a bunch of stress tests yourself on uneven terrain to see the max abuse they can take.
This all sounds like a great project to use your brain, hands and creativity. Even if each step fails , it's all about experimenting and trying different things to see what works. Good luck.

Love this and your creative thinking!! Maybe if you ever try this again you could make the raft more aerodynamic like a canoe so it would be easier to navigate with a paddle? Just a suggestion. So many uses for things we just “throw” away. Have you seen they make bricks out of plastic bottles for homes? What a great solution from waste to shelter.
Have you seen soda bottle twine? With a jig and a razor you can make long strips that can be used as lashing. I've always wanted to do this but I figured that I would use the soda bottles as Rope to tie them all together. It's a lot more work but I like completely free projects.

Now make 3 more sections, put them together, and add a sail out of some recycled bubble wrap. Go fishing, and if you get bored you can pop bubble wrap. Add a rudder and a lawn chair. Tada!

Wow that's what I call recycling that was a lot of work! Good job. That is something that kids could help do adult supervision during the summer time as a project. I'm sure there's enough people in the neighborhood that would be glad to give away their 2 liter bottles.

I thought of plopping a mattress on top for a bed. This could have endless uses with a little imagination, like a platform or even a walking bridge.
An air bed makes a great swim raft. Much more comfy and only a little more expensive.
The idea of silicone valve is very useful and really helpful also thanks very much for this idea and the proof it works so well

Here in South Africa one would be hard pressed to collect that many bottles in a reasonable amount of time, because scavengers collect them for recycling.

Here in the US you get no money for recycling plastic, that's why there's a plastic waste problem here.

The problem is that the majority of states don’t have a deposit on bottles, so while New York may not ever recycle and still uses garbage barges, over here in Oregon we are all HIGHLY encouraged to recycle.
Damn! This is ingenious! I'm considering doing that myself and adding sides to it to make a fishing raft. How many bottles does it take to make that raft? By the way, I would totally seal the caps to prevent leakage.
