RT Kendall Sermon - Once saved always saved

  • This sermon excerpt is based from my understanding of being Once Saved, Always Saved. I wrote a book on the subject back in 1983. Unfortunately its now out of print. But is available now as a PDF download here: ow.ly/75yT50zSIRN
If you want to learn more about this subject and my understanding of it, please read the preview blog here: rtkendallminis...
I first wrote Once Saved, Always Saved in 1983, six years after coming to Westminster Chapel. This book was initially accepted by the evangelical community in Great Britain - being featured in Evangelical Times. But later on it came under attack by some hyper-reformed people who charged me with antinomianism (a word that means "lawlessness" and is associated with the idea that since you are saved it doesn't matter how you live). Certain people tried to eject me from my church! What saved me from this was two things. First, it was well known that Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, the man who put me in Westminster Chapel, always said that if our Gospel is not accused of being antinomian it is because we hadn't really preached it! Secondly, testimonies of countless people claimed that it was this very book which motivated them to live godly lives like no book they had ever read.
I did not write Once Saved, Always Saved to convince people of this teaching but to encourage those who wanted to believe it but were afraid it is not true. I have received more unsolicited letters from readers of this book than any other book I have written except Total Forgiveness. So many people have written to say they were either given a clear assurance of their salvation but also that it led them to live holy lives that would bring honor and glory to God.
You decide. I pray it will be a blessing to you.

I find that a strong belief in eternal security makes me more desirous of holy living because I am so grateful to Jesus for saving me.

That’s great that you feel that way because many do not. There are those who turn the grace of our God into lasciviousness, see the book of Jude. I believe Dr. Kendall had a genuine experience and that it is true for him. I believe that all who are believers are eternally secure, but if you cease to believe you are not. I do not fear losing my salvation like I might lose my socks, but I know it is possible if I were to turn away from Christ and ceased to believe and just decide that I’m going to go my own way. For me, the warnings in Scripture, particularly in Hebrews or what do it for me. I was raised around both extremes. I was raised around holiness people that would believe that you could lose your salvation over drinking a beer. I was also raised around an aunt and uncle that believed once saved always saved. The answer is somewhere in the middle. We can rest in the promises of God as we trust in and walk with him, but there are no promises to the rebel. Some in the reform camp will hold to perseverance, in other words, if you persevere in him that is the evidence of your election. I can live with that, but I have never been able to be convinced that apostasy is not possible. It is a super interesting subject for me and there are good arguments on both sides of the aisle, but the warning passages seal the deal for me. I do not believe they are merely preventative, but I believe they are true genuine biblical warnings.

A lot of lost souls in this comment section...if anyone really believe that he must do good works in order to be saved or to keep him saved, he did not yet see the Grace of God, we are saved by grace through faith, not of works. We are justified not by our character, but by the precious blood of Jesus Christ our Lord 🙏

It blows my mind that Christians think they can lose there salvation.... Once Ur saved Ur given the holy spirit ... No were in the Bible does God say he will TAKE BK HIS SPIRIT N U WILL BE UNSAVED .... Jesus paid it all! That is the beauty of his grace that we don't understand... I'm confident were I stand with the Lord.... N I no 10000000 percent I'm going to heaven no matter how good or how bad I do (not saying it's a license to sin) but that's how much I trust in my God... Do U trust him? Stop trying to save Ur selfs

So with that mind set Christians can live like the world and still expect to enter the Kingdom of heaven? 1 Corinthians6:9 Matthew 7:21-23! With all that you said it’s justifying sin. That’s doctrine of devils if you truly believe that you can live out the world in still enter in heaven. 1. If anyone professing Christ and still living like the world isn’t truly saved. Anyone can say anything but the heart can be far away from the mouth. People can say anything and not mean it. If one is truly transformed by the word of God they wouldn’t have any problems living like the world bc they wouldn’t live like the world!

Ridiculous. Jesus did not die for our sins so that we could continue in them. A holy God would never provide a "loophole" for Christians to continue sinning, "never." Why would God permit Christians to sin as the world, but without eternal consequences?

  • @TheBibleSays
    @TheBibleSays 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

If "eternal security" or "OSAS" were true, then there would have been no point in warnings like these:
⚫ "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (Jesus, in John 15:6)
You must first *_be_* a branch before you can be "cast forth as a branch." And obviously we *can* be "cast forth" after becoming a branch. Jesus did not say "once a branch, always a branch." It's amazing to me that anyone could conclude you're still "saved" after being "cast off as a branch" and "withered" and "cast into the fire" and "burned." Simply amazing . . . but people will believe what they want to believe.
Jesus clearly warned what would happen to servants who returned to sin:
    ⚫ "But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers." (Jesus, in Luke 12:45,46)
"Once saved, always saved," with "eternal security"? Apparently not.
Sins "all paid for, past, present and future"? Apparently not.
That servant was going to pay for his sins himself.
The apostle Paul had the holy spirit. Paul clearly refuted "once saved, always saved": he stated it was possible for him to revert to a life of sin and therefore be rejected . . . thrown out . . . a "castaway":
⚫ "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." (1 Corinthians 9:27)
There's a message there for all who have been misled to believe that *having* the holy spirit is a guarantee of your salvation. We must remain in repentance, being *led* by the holy spirit (Romans 8:13,14) and "walking after the spirit" (Romans 8:1) . . . not just _having_ it and ignoring it.
The apostle Paul warned that Gentile believers - even after being "graffed" into the "vine," - could be "cut off" the vine, just as the "natural branches" (the Israelites) had been broken off:
⚫ "Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
For if God spared not the natural branches, *take heed lest he also spare not thee.*
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, *if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off."* (Romans 11:19-22)
If, after overcoming sin through knowing Jesus, a person then returns to a life of sin, "the latter end is worse with them than the beginning":
⚫ "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." (2 Peter 2:20-22)
Here is another warning "if" about returning to a life of sin:
⚫ "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries." (Hebrews 10:26,27)
*_Can you lose your salvation?_* Trick question, because it presumes you *_have_* salvation. However Jesus said we must endure to the end to be saved (Matthew 10:22) . . . and we have not endured to the end.
Christians need to understand justification (now) vs salvation (later). Paul wrote that justification and salvation are different things, at different times (Romans 5:9). While we abide in Jesus and "walk after the spirit" (Romans 8:1) we remain in justification and are "in His goodness" or grace (Romans 11:22) -not under condemnation. While in justification we have "the hope of salvation" and are "appointed . . . to obtain salvation" as Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:8,9. We have many warnings not to fall away from justification because if we do, we'll forfeit that "hope of salvation." We'll miss our appointment to receive the promised gift of eternal life (1 John 2:25), at Jesus' "revelation," His return (1 Peter 1:13; 1 Corinthians 15:50-54; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). Upon receiving eternal life at Jesus' return, then you will have eternal security. Short of receiving eternal life you will perish, very much unsaved.
⚫ "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it." (Hebrews 4:1)
Here's more of the many warnings not to fall away. Note the "ifs" with conditions:
⚫ "Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:10,11 )
⚫ "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;" (Hebrews 3:12-14)
⚫ "And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;" (Colossians 1:21-23 )
    Another "if":
we must choose to be led by the holy spirit:
⚫ "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." (Romans 8:13,14)
It IS possible to fall away, even after being made a "partaker" of the holy spirit! There would have been no point in writing the next passage if it were impossible to fall away:
⚫ "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame." (Hebrews 6:4-6)
We can "fail of the grace of God":
⚫ "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled" (Hebrews 12:14,15)
Our names CAN be blotted out of the book of life:
⚫ "He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels."
"And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 3:5 and 22:19)

Assurance of salvation comes at two levels...the primary level is thru the promises in the words of Jesus "My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
If a believer was not raised on the last day Jesus promise wouldn't be true. Eternal security flows from his promise.
And secondary level the Holy Spirit brings the truth to our hearts.

Amen, it's not about what we can do or how we perform, it's all about what Jesus did and how He performed otherwise we invariably wind up in a works mentality with its accompanying insecurity.
''But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.'' Rom 5:1 Eph 2:8-9 Rom 3:26 Eph 4:30
Whilst I have an understanding that one cannot ''lose'' their salvation whilst trusting in the finished work of Jesus on Calvary I also have an understanding that someone can ''throw away'' their salvation by a deliberate act of the will. Heb 6:4-6

Obedience to God's Word & Spirit is NOT a work my friend. It just proves that our faith (which saves us) is REAL, and not just a profession. So obeying God is not a work unto salvation, but simply the proof that we ARE (today, at present) still BELIEVING Him. So we ARE saved by Grace through Faith, and NOT by the works of the Law. I implore you to consider the whole counsel of God.

Exactly. God may take away our salvation, but as free moral agents, we can certainly give it back. The Bible warns against serious sins that will keep a person from entering God’s Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Galatians 5:19-21) If salvation could not be lost, such warnings would be meaningless. Instead, the Bible shows that someone who has been saved can fall away by returning to a practice of serious sin. For example, Hebrews 10:26 states: “If we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left.”-Hebrews 6:4-6; 2 Peter 2:20-22.
Jesus emphasized the importance of maintaining faith by giving an illustration in which he likened himself to a vine and his followers to branches on that vine. Some of them would at one time demonstrate faith in him by their fruits, or actions, yet would later fail to do so and be “thrown out like a [fruitless] branch,” losing their salvation. (John 15:1-6) The apostle Paul used a similar illustration, saying that Christians who do not maintain their faith “will be lopped off.”-Romans 11:17-22.
Christians are commanded to “keep on the watch.” (Matthew 24:42; 25:13) Those who fall asleep spiritually, whether by practicing “works belonging to darkness” or by not fully performing the works that Jesus commanded, lose their salvation.-Romans 13:11-13; Revelation 3:1-3.
Many scriptures show that those who have been saved must still endure faithfully to the end. (Matthew 24:13; Hebrews 10:36; 12:2, 3; Revelation 2:10) First-century Christians expressed joy when they learned that fellow believers were enduring in their faith. (1 Thessalonians 1:2, 3; 3 John 3, 4)
What's the incentive for living a life based on scripture if everyone has the same outcome? Most people that habitually commit serious sins have accepted Christ. With that said, how could a Godly person's fate and a habitual sinners fate be the same? Anyone sincerely repenting, turning away from their bad deeds and asking for forgiveness can be forgiven. However, that has nothing to do with being saved. Matthew 24:13 is very clear. It says, "the one who has endured to the end will be saved".

Isn't about being good enough but it is about understanding that unrepentant backsliders will spend eternity in hell! No Christian is perfect we understand that but there's a difference between a person working out their salvation and pressing toward the mark versus a unrepentant backslider using grace as an excuse or using grace as insurance to cover up unrepentant sinful lifestyle. No one is above the possibility of being lost we have accepted Christ we have chosen to serve him but the minute we allowed him tation and the mindset in the lifestyle of this world to become our character that called backslidden and in that state we are no longer in right standing with God and without repentance we will be lost forever.

⚫ "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (Jesus, in John 15:6)
You must first be a branch before you can be "cast forth as a branch." And obviously we can be "cast forth" after becoming a branch.
      ⚫ "But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
There's a message there for all who have been misled to believe that having the holy spirit is a guarantee of your salvation. We must remain in repentance, being led by the holy spirit (Romans 8:13,14) and "walking after the spirit" (Romans 8:1) . . . not just having it and ignoring it.
For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." (Romans 11:19-22)

Can a Christian lose their salvation? TRICK QUESTION! *You can not lose what you do not yet have!*
The apostles Paul and Peter gave the correct perspective on salvation: it is something we hope for, to be received in the future. Here's Paul:
⚫ "But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:8,9; Paul did not tell them they had been saved.)
Here's Peter, saying "shall be" saved - in the future:
⚫ "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." (Acts 15: 11)
In fact, Jesus tells us we must endure to the end to be saved:
⚫ "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved." (Matthew 10:22)
We shall be saved - saved from ever perishing in death - when we actually receive the promised gift of eternal life at Jesus' return. Paul explained this in 1 Corinthians 15:42-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17. Short of receiving the gift of eternal life, we will surely perish in death, losing everything, *very much unsaved!*
Salvation - eternal life - is a grace promised to us, to be received at Jesus' "revelation" or return:
⚫ "And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life" (1 John 2:25)
⚫ "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" (1 Peter 1:13)
Justification and salvation are two different things, at different times
In this mortal life we may enter justification; we will not be saved until we receive eternal life at Jesus' return. Paul wrote:
⚫ "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." (Paul, in Romans 5:9; there's another example of "shall be" saved.)
"By his blood" a person may enter justification; "through him" that person shall be saved. "Through him" means through a relationship with Him. Remember Jesus' words about those who had preached in His name, and had "cast out devils," and had "done many wonderful works"? Jesus warned what he would say to them:
⚫ "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:23)
Not only must we know Him: we must continue to abide in Him:
⚫ "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (Jesus, in John 15:6)
So, how do we enter justification? Through faith (Ephesians 2:8) that God exists and rewards (Hebrews 11:6) we may then choose to obey and "come to God" (Hebrews 11:6) on His terms: in repentance. For that we receive His promised mercy:
⚫ "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30)
⚫ "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
So, what is the mercy promised in Proverbs 28:13? Our past sins will be blotted out:
⚫ "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV)
A believer - a person who through faith has come to God, confessing and forsaking sin - has been "purged from his old sins" (2 Peter 1:9). Believers have "remission of sins that are past" (Romans 3:25). They have redemption - by grace - from the death penalty they had earned for past sins:
⚫ "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
Believers have been "saved" (re: Ephesians 2:8) from hopelessness. They have not "endured to the end"; they have the "hope of salvation." They are no longer under condemnation, no longer under the death penalty they had earned as the "wages" of their past sins. That redemption was made possible "by his blood" as we saw in Romans 5:9: Jesus made His death available to cover our death penalty.
The Gift of the Holy Spirit
With past sins that separated us from God (Isaiah 59:1,2) erased, and no longer under condemnation, we enter justification, reconciled with God, no longer separated from God. Now we can begin a new life, "times of refreshing" in "the presence of the Lord" as we saw in Acts 3:19:
⚫ "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).
And how are we in "the presence of the Lord"? Through the gift of the holy spirit, given to those who obey and come to God in repentance:
⚫ "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him." (Acts 5:32)
⚫ "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38)
Through the holy spirit Jesus guides us out of slavery to sin and into His righteousness, overcoming slavery to sin. This is how we are made ready to receive the gift of eternal life and to inherit the Kingdom of God. Creation is not finished: sons and daughters for the Father's eternal family are being created, right now, through Jesus. He is the potter, we are the clay:
⚫ "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." (Jesus, in Revelation 3:19)
    A relationship with Him
⚫ " . . . yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby" (Hebrews 12:11).
⚫ "He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son." (Revelation 21:7)
We can not make the journey along the "narrow way" (Matthew 7:14) that leads to life without His help. And that journey can neither begin nor continue without our repentance, abiding in Him.
Outside of repentance, we receive no mercy and no redemption; we will surely perish in death, paying our own death penalty. And outside of repentance, we can not be made ready to receive the gift of eternal life. For those reasons Jesus warned:
⚫ " . . . except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." (Luke 13:5)
Peter makes it clear: we either come to repentance, or we perish:
⚫ "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
*Nothing about "faith alone" there!* Jesus told His disciples to preach repentance and remission of sins, not "faith alone," not "faith + nothing = salvation":
⚫ "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:45-47)
    All those warnings . . .
We have free will, and it is possible for us to return to a life of sin, no longer in repentance and no longer abiding in Him. We've chosen sin, not repentance. In that case, we have "fallen away" from justification, no longer on the "narrow way" that leads to life. Once again we have sins that have not been blotted out. We've returned to condemnation.
*That's why the apostles gave all those warnings* not to "fall away" and not to "fail of the grace of God." To "give diligence to make your calling and election sure" (2 Peter 1:10,11). To *"continue in his goodness"* or else be *"cut off"* (Romans 11:19-22).
⚫ "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it." (Hebrews 4:1)
Here is a list of similar verses:
⚫ 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul understood he could possibly return to sin and be a "castaway"
⚫ 2 Peter 2:20-22 Even after knowing Him it is possible to return to a life of sin, and end up worse than before
    ⚫ Hebrews 10:26,27 If we return to a life of sin . . .
⚫ Hebrews 6:4-6 We can "fall away" even after receiving the holy spirit
⚫ Hebrews 12:14,15 We can "fail of the grace of God"
⚫ Revelation 3:5 and 22:19 Our names CAN be blotted out of the book of life

There is no scripture that says you can lose your salvation same as there is no scripture that says once saved always saved.
There IS HOWEVER scripture that says no one can snatch you from the Father and there are MANY that say to hold on to your faith or don’t lose your faith. They key here is that while no one can take our faith away from us, we still retain the freedom to give it up.
Our faith finishes our race. If our faith doesn’t endure until our last breathe, our race isn’t complete.

@@aliasgirl9 No one who has truly been saved and therefore received the 'gift' of faith from their father would give it up. They may be beat down by this world, and the god of this world enough to affect their walk with Christ, but their salvation is secure. If we are saved through grace by faith, and faith is a gift from our Father, and our Father never fails. How then can a saved person not obtain the gift of eternal life? The 'key' is always rightly dividing the Word. People interpret the Word differently because they don't rightly divide.
Also, sorry about the late reply again.

Your comment violates 2 Peter 1:20 by selectively paraphrasing verses that you think support your private doctrine. The parable of the talents in Matthew 25 contradicts the "faith alone" heresy, never mind James 2:24 that flatly states we are justified by works and not by faith only. Black and white text from God's Word is calling you a liar.

It's destructive to think once saved always saved! John John gave us the smoking gun scripture when he wrote about the mark of the beast! Most Christians know for sure that if we got the mark of the beast (during the end time) off to hell we would go!

This was a vision from the devil without a doubt. This is why the bible teaches us that even if an angel comes to us preaching another gospel to let that spirit be accursed. One saved always saved isn't in the bible. The devil was playing on your lack of foundational truths because he knew you're a pushover without a solid foundation.

Im sorry but it's not scriptural, no experience overides scripture, maybe he had this experience but it does not mean all that have been saved will remain saved. God does not take away men's free will and make them puppets. Too many scriptures prove you can backside a go to Hell.
