    Very cool experiment! You are really making me want a laser.

      Thank you! I could see you doing some cool things with one. It was fun to just kind of experiment and see the capabilities of different materials.

    It's fun to watch your experiments, from what I can tell your branding iron seems to work the best. Thanks for sharing

      Yeah, that one was really clean and clear. Now I know, I suppose. Thanks, Zach!

    Branding iron ... yeah that worked very well!

    • @BruceAUlrich

      Yeah, it does a great job! I tried it with just pressure and also using it heated up when I made the sleeves for my holdfasts. Both worked really well!

      Thanks so much, Dan! It was a fun one to experiment with and come to some different conclusions.

    I don't know how I feel about letting my leather operate as an independent contractor... I want more control over it.

      ha ha ha...that one took me a minute, but I finally got it!

    Really nice project! I think if I had a laser, I’d use it over a branding iron for my woodworking. This was an awesome experiment 👌🏻

      Thanks! Yeah, I've done a lot of laser engraved leather and it still yields a great result. Just wanted to experiment with some other options.

    Great video! I never thought about using my branding iron in that way but you've definitely given me some ideas.

      Thank you! You might be able to get enough pressure with it not being in your drill press, but I think it helps.

    Great video Bruce. Its cool to see how all of those tests came out. The branding iron was super clean. I wonder how a 3d printed piece might work. Keep up the good work.

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yeah, I think a 3D printed one would work really well. For this time, it was all about just experimenting with some of the tools and materials I have and finding those limits.

  • @fosteredwoodworks
    @fosteredwoodworks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool experiment, Bruce! I think the branding iron method definitely left the cleanest lines. That would be a neat idea to emboss and brand at the same time.

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! That's what I ended up doing in the previous video where I did the workbench upgrades. I did the branding and debossing at the same time. It was a pretty cool effect!

  • @FishersShop
    @FishersShop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man the branding iron worked so good! I wonder if you could round the edges of the acrylic to avoid getting the lines when pressing.

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that might work to round the edges. I think it was the fact that the acrylic mold wasn't deep enough. And when I did it deeper, it kind of disintegrated the little lines.

  • @EthanCarterDesigns

    First 😂 - really cool experimenting and I've actually never tried using my branding iron, so I think I'm going to now!

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should! It does a good job heated or not!

  • @GunflintDesigns

    Cool! Makes me think I need to replace my branding iron. It took a tumble and landed delicate side down on the concrete floor. :(

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! You can't brand the concrete floor. ha ha

    Looks like you had two different types of leather.
    The tan one, is veg tan, and dampening that and impressing will work.
    The other looked like chrome tanned leather, and that isn’t near,y as receptive to embossing

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the darker brown one is oil tanned. I don't believe I've got any chrome tanned leather since I do use them in the laser engraver and that's supposed to be a big no no. But yeah, I can see how they have very different properties.

    Your always better off “CASING” the leather (wet the leather by totally submersing the leather in water until for 3-4 seconds then let the leather sit in the open air for about 10 minutes. Now cover the leather in a plastic bag. Use a flat glass carving board or flat piece of board with a weight on it. Let it stay that way over night. The next morning remove everything from the leather and allow the leather to air dry for 1-2 hours or until the leather looks a chestnut color. Now you can emboss or tool the leather. You may have to spray water on the leather so it doesn’t dry out until you are finished. Best regards, Richard

    Hi I was wondering if u would be willing to share the settings for the 1/4
    Inch debossing I have been trying to figure out how to make acrylic stamps and settings are so difficult for me

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! I'm sorry...I really don't remember the settings at this point. If you search on the Glowforge forums, you can probably find some good settings that other people have used. I would reference that often.

  • @BearMaked
    @BearMaked 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if you'd considered it, but hitting up a friend that has a 3D printer, they could print you a stamp that would do the trick, too. If you're interested in that, let me know 🙂
    Actually, I started typing this before you got to the branding iron in the video, and I think that's a much better way, haha!

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I like the 3D printed idea too. The PLA is pretty tough, huh?

    • @BearMaked
      @BearMaked 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BruceAUlrich it's tough, but can be brittle. But I made a stamp for my brother at least 2 years ago, as far as I know, it's still holding up.

      @@BearMaked Does he use it in leather?

    • @BearMaked
      @BearMaked 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BruceAUlrich That was his intention. I will have to check with him and see how often he uses it. He also mentioned wanting to use it on other stuff, he makes custom holsters, and wanted a way to stamp his logo.

    Does anyone know if you can get this off? Is there a way to un-emboss leather?

    • @BruceAUlrich

      I don’t believe it can be undone.

    • @o0TaxMan0o
      @o0TaxMan0o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BruceAUlrich ah man! I've got an embossed seat but I don't like the embossing and wondered if there was a way to remove it. I knew it was a long shot though.
