I love your interpretation of Paul! I also do view Paul as not some manipulative cult leader that wants the greed and power to himself but rather a victim of his own prophecy. From the moment Fey entered the game, the situation was out of his control. He did everything he could to avoid the visions but his situation demanded it of him.
Yeah exactly, it was much so a rock between a hard place for him. He’s just kind of trapped in to whatever happens at this point, although maybe in the future we’ll have an opportunity to change some things. not sure how the book narrative plays out but i’m excited to see. thanks for the comment!
In Frank Herbert’s last book he authored, Chapterhouse Dune, it brought in the possibility that Paul was the messiah, so Stilgar was actually correct in prophecy being fulfilled, not just comic relief. Facedancers evolved much more quickly than the Bene Gesserit’s program of genetics. They manipulated Dune behind the scenes. Paul’s good luck was no accident. If you are chosen, even if you don’t realize it you don’t really have free will. Your future is chosen for you, with the illusion of free will.
The writing and editing of this video was top tier! Thank you for putting so much tlc into this video, it was entertaining and informative. I hope to see more videos and deep dives about dune!
I’ve seen many articles attaching Stilgar as comedic relief. I strongly disagree with those comedic relief comments in relation to Paul as the Messiah. I see it more as a critique on the trappings followers can fall into when following a messianic figure. I think the comedic relief comments dumb down the character and messaging Herbert and Denie tried to convey.
I definitely understand this point and agree with what you're saying. I think I was more so just pointing out how it can come off, while really having that underlying importance to where the narrative is going in the film. It's kind of like a misdirection to me, in the same way that followers get trapped into following a messiah by the same kind of misdirection. Very good point!
Thank you, brother. I really enjoyed your perspective about this film. There are many reaction videos done by people color, cheering for Paul. Ignoring the fact that Paul is from royalty and is part of families that colonized the planet. everything Paul knew about the fremen he learned before even arriving on the planet. How to rule: from his father, how to manipulate people, from his mother. Yet many reactions videos I’ve seen done by Black people thinks Paul is a hero. The real hero was chani. She never forgot who she was and refused to blindly follow Paul.
@@havedrill1 Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. And yeah I see Paul not as a hero or a full villain really, but a mix of both, and overall kind of a victim of circumstance himself. I think that’s what makes the film so good is just that understanding that this guy that is driving everything has these imperfections and these struggles that make his would be hero narrative a much more convoluted journey. I’m excited to see how he’s portrayed and visualized in the next movie. Thanks for watching!
@@MarsHogan Yes. And as the author of Dune, Frank Herbert, explain about the intention of his book. He was warning us about how easy we can be manipulated into follow charismatic leaders. I am showing you the superhero syndrome and your own participation in it." Frank Herbert. He obviously made Paul into a likable character and Villeneuve did an excellent job showing what Herbert was trying to say. But just like in the movie Bladerunner, the audience rooted for Harrison Ford's character because we were told he's in law enforcement. Even when the "replicant" ask Ford, how do it feel to be a slave? Ford character was a runaway slave hunter. And the audience cheered him on. The movie tested the audience's level of empathy. That in my opinion is good directing and storytelling.
