I wanted to do something different to make my girl feel special, but I did not want it to be a regular proposal or a typical Indian engagement.
I witnessed a flash mob which was focused on a more general cause. Right there, the idea of mixing the flash mob with a wedding proposal came to my mind.
I came home and did some research on 'what is a flash mob' and can it be done for a wedding proposal. The idea became more substantial after I watched a few videos on TH-cam.
I searched for the best wedding proposal ideas, engagement proposal ideas, some cute, dance and great proposal ideas.
I found some flashmob marriage proposals that happened in NYC (New York), USA, Canada and other countries across the globe but I couldn't find anything from India.
So I decided to do a flash mob with an Indian wedding style, having Hindi songs, Punjabi songs and of course Bruno Mars Marry You.
But there was a big challenge.
I wanted to do the flash in my (then) girlfriend's town Chandigarh, while I was living far away in New Delhi.
So I researched more on how to organize a flash mob and if there is a wedding proposal company. I wanted to know, how to hire a flash mob for a proposal but I couldn't find much information.
So I decided to organize and plan everything on my own.
The first thing I did was to search for the songs. I searched for the best wedding songs, first dance songs and many more. I wanted to finalize something that I could dance on yet keep it classic, unique and fun.
Finally, I picked up the amazing Valentine Mashup by DJ Kiran Kamath (for that Hindi flavor), I then mixed the Macklemore - Thrift Shop with a Punjabi dance song JK & Tru-Skool - Jaadu, later added a line from this cool song; Diljit Dosanjh - Mr. Singh and finally ended it with the apt and famous song “Marry You by Bruno Mars”.
I mixed all of these together and made a single 8 minutes track.
I would then travel on the weekends and make the necessary arrangements in Chandigarh.
I started searching for a wedding dance choreography crew and after multiple meetings with many dance academies and choreographers, I finally found a few dancers who looked promising and enthusiastic about the flash mob wedding proposal idea.
I contacted the Mall Management team and discussed the wedding proposal idea. It was new for them so it wasn’t easy and took around 3-4 weeks to convince them of the approval. I then searched for the best DJ in town to set up the music system.
There were so many variables that could go wrong. So I appointed a few bouncers as well to ensure the security of everyone involved.
The next step was to find the camera crew to capture the flash mob surprise from every angle and also capture the father-daughter reaction.
Her Father and I had a good bonding already so I decided to take the permission from him before-hand and invite him to the marriage proposal while ensuring that it was still kept a secret from her.
Finally the 'The Day' arrived. We made a plan to watch a movie and invited the family to the mall.
I was coordinating with all the groups through texts. My girlfriend got a little suspicious about why I was so busy on the phone. I told her, it was just work.
Everyone was in position and I was all pumped.
We reached the spot and they started playing the music and started dancing. We stopped to watch as if it was a regular dance performance until I joined the dance group.
The rest, as they say, is a beautiful history...
