My fiancé and I bought a house before starting wedding planning--- really helped us reprioritize especially since we have rennovations we are saving for. We essentially cut the guest list and budget in half 😅.
I know a couple that spent a fortune on a wedding, but the house they were buying they lost. They should have put more on the house first and had a smaller wedding.
It always surprises me when Americans talk about a bar like either everything is free or nothing is. Australian here! It’s super common for a few wines, beers, maybe one champagne/Prosecco and all non alcoholic to be free and any cocktails/spirits to be paid for by guests. You want a house wine? Free! You want a vodka soda? Gonna have to pay for that yourself. It’s been like that at every wedding I’ve been to. Works really well but it is what we’re used to here.

In Cyprus local beers and wines along with non alcoholic drinks are free, but guests don't pay for anything, the couple can bring any other type of alcoholic drink they want, which will be served to all or some guests, depending on the coupl's preferences

I'm in the US and I've been to events and weddings like this. Another thing they'll do is only an open bar for 1 hour free and after that it's cash.
I’m only having an open bar for 2 hours, my venue is an hour and a half away from where we all live so that’s the main reason, the rest of the time will be a cash bar. I totally expect to pay for my alcohol every time I go to a wedding. It’s wonderful when I don’t, it’s 100% expected and okay when I do.

The borrow tip works really well for bachelorette parties as well! We have one bag of bachelorette stuff that we just pass between our friend group whenever it's our turn

Also, according to my Russian in-laws, shots are basically required for our wedding, especially with toasts/speeches, so they agreed to pay for the alcohol 🙌 because they will be the ones to utilize it the most

Been to a wedding like this. Super awesome, but just make sure no one takes a full shot for every toast because the groom didn't take that advice and was in front of the trash can by the end of the night...
As a Swedish person, not having schnapps at a wedding so you can sing drinking songs together and do shots is almost as bad as not having food :P

I first started watching Jamie when I got offered a wedding planning internship. Now I work full-time at an event planning company where I get to interview and train interns.
One thing to note about food trucks -- they can be cost effective, but it really depends. Most require food minimums ranging from $500 to 3k. Which can be perfect for a 150+ wedding, but can start getting pricey for smaller crowds of 30-100.
I wanted to go all out for my wedding, have it in a castle, invite tons of people, the whole nine yards. Because I wanted a post-pandemic wedding, we opted to have a 20 month engagement, the side effect being that we now have two times the amount of time to save up for are larger priority items, so I would definitely suggest a longer engagement to save money!
I got married almost 2 years ago and I’m still here cause I love Jamie’s fun energy! We had a Sunday wedding and here’s the secret 😉 pick a holiday weekend like Labor Day or Memorial Day. You still get Sunday pricing and your guests that work regular hours and have weekends off will likely have the Monday holiday off the next day. All the perks of a Saturday without the cost. Plus if you have your rehearsal the day before then having it on a Saturday is convenient too. We did a casual rehearsal lunch and then got to relax the rest of the day before. Hope this helps! @@mel9471 awww that’s lame. I actually got that tip from the venue we ended up booking because the Saturday price was more than we wanted to spend. I wouldn’t have thought of it if they hadn’t told me.
Hotel prices are usually higher on holiday weekends tho, so that is another thing to consider 😬😭
Yess! I got married this year on May 30th, the day before memorial day. We still had a higher guest count and everyone partied just the same!

Hey Jamie! I would love a video on wedding reception games (i.e. shoe game, trivia, etc.). What are some of the funnest games you've seen at weddings?
My friend and bridesmaid is getting married a few weeks before me (I'm also a bridesmaid for her wedding) and we are going halves on some things such as photobooth backdrop items and helping eachother out with DIYs which will save us both money and get us beautiful weddings!
A tip I have learnt while planning my wedding is telling certain vendors that I'm planning an event and not a wedding. I have saved so much money. I even got my venue for via Airbnb and spoke to the owner about using it for a wedding. We went from having to pay $20k for a venue to $4000 and we are allowed to be stay on the property from Friday to Sunday and the owner gave us more stuffs for no extra charge.
Consignment wedding dress shopping saved me a ton! Brides go wedding dress shopping far to early or commit to soon. Then they fall out of love with a brand new dress and buy a second one. These consignment stores sell dresses for 50%-70% off retail price. This is also great for MOB/G dresses, mix-&match suits, veils, shoes, accessories, and gifts.
Another quick tip that I’m pretty sure Jamie has shared before: try getting married at a local church! They probably already have tables, chairs, a kitchen, and maybe even some decent tablecloths! And if they’re nice enough, they’ll probably charge very little or not at all!
Yes! Places of worship are amazing because a lot of them have extra things like tables, kitchens, etc.
I’m getting married at my home church and it’s free because I’m a member and we are doing premarital counseling with the pastor. It has a full kitchen, tables, chairs, and a PA system. The only thing I have the pay for is any extra decor, flowers, and food.
My wedding is in 10 days, we planned on having a backyard wedding at my parents house, but it began to feel like way too much. We ended up going with an all inclusive venue, it was actually going to be around the same cost! Your videos have been so helpful! Thank you for what you do :)
We are absolutely finding the same thing. Once we included loos/ heating/ rentals the all inclusive was way better value for money
I had a Sunday wedding and we just made it a mid day wedding so people could get home in time to get ready for work the next day. We didn’t want a full on reception with dancing and stuff so we had a lovely dinner first dances a little chatter and people were gone by around 7. It was perfect for us
Oh these tips are gold! I’m getting married on my grandparents farm & since it’s about 11 hours away from where we live, it helped us keep the guest count low. Right now it’s at 50. We decided to invite family only, and skip a bridal party. I know that’s not in everyone’s vision but those 2 choices have saved us so much money and after being a bridesmaid a few times, I think I’m saving myself the stress/costs of coordinating all the bridal party stuff too. I keep seeing videos that say "my dream wedding for 5k". Apparently, my dream is much different than theirs. I just priced a venue at a state park. My dream wedding would cost 100k.
My uncle and aunt years ago had a small wedding at a hall it was fantastic! It was the day after christmas and they thought nobody would show up, but they did. Money saving tips on the food, some of the people made homemade food and set it on the table. My grandmother made homemade pasta with italian sausage, my mother made a ham and baked beans. it was plenty to eat for about 80 people. My uncles friend was a DJ, so they cut cost on a band. It really turned out nice everyone had a great time. The drinks my uncle did pay for the bar. But, no catering service was there.
All inclusive actually SAVED us money, but that's probably because we had a traditional Vietnamese wedding that has a 9 course dinner, at $50 a head.

As a career bartender the idea of not having shots at my wedding made me bulk lol. I totally agree that a few kegs of beer and wine is normal and awesome for a wedding. I think since I'm a bartender I'm more focused on the bar being a focal point.
I was able to buy a half price dress by shopping at a sample sale. I got engaged mid July and learned that quite a few bridal shops in my area were doing sample sales at the time. There is a smaller range of sizes depending on where you shop but different stores have different ranges, so it’s worth shopping around. If you aren’t a sample size at one store, you could be a sample size at another store. I was able to get the quality of dress that I wanted, and I only spent half of my dress budget!
Same sis and I don't regret it at all. You'll pay extra for alterations in my country. So adding all my alterations to my price of the dress stil costs me less than half of the price. I'm very excited for my wedding next July and I can't wait to wear my sample gown.😎

We’re planning on hosting our reception at a brewery. We’re going to purchase a few kegs of their house beers and seltzers, and about 15 bottles of wine. Anything beyond that, guests can purchase themselves. We’re only having family and 2 family friends who are basically family. Trying to keep this budget small!
In my area all inclusive can actually be cheaper. I did an all inclusive venue and it was about the same price for food and alcohol per head as an outside caterer and included standard linens and rentals. Upcharges for floor length linens and chair covers was on par with other rental companies as well. But where I really save was the venue fee was half the cost at my venue then what I saw at alot of venues that werent all inclusive. I might have just been lucky but I also don't live in a city where all inclusive may be much more expensive.

Love all the tips! My biggest budget tip is to get married during a pandemic 😅 really cuts down on the head count. 🤪 We did a lot of DIY because I love crafts, but had never heard that 40/60 rule before, that is a great one!
kid buffet venues - they can be great wedding vendors for a lot cheaper. Most of them were honored to do it when we asked about it and it was half the price and twice the fun.

For us all inclusive was actually cheaper. Our venue, catering, wine with dinner, decor, cake, DJ was all included for $78/pp. We only had to look for our attire, signage and photography
YES!!! Rent the tablecloths!! Otherwise, you and your bridesmaids will spend many hours ironing them and then you have to store them in a large, flat area where they won’t get stepped on!!!!

Hi Jamie, big fan from the UK. I find it so mental that it's the opposite in the UK for all inclusive. I've found choosing my own vendors is at least double the cost of all inclusive. As my mum has said, "it's £10k before you've even got a sandwich".
Same here in the Netherlands! We looked at one venue that you needed to find your own vendors for - catering alone (tables, chairs and dance floor not included) was as expensive (if not more) as some of the other venues that had catering (and even a wedding cake and some minimal table decor) already included!
I feel a lot smarter knowing that I knew almost all of these and am going to use them in my wedding next year. My fiancé and I are only inviting 6-8 people, one of his teachers that he had in high school is a professional photographer and we found a videographer that charges less than $90 an hour. We are picking up catering from Olive Garden and we are doing all of our own decorating (but we’re keeping it minimal because we’re going to have to clean it up) we’re renting an Airbnb for the day as the “venue” his friend is ordained and is going to be the officiant. We aren’t hiring a DJ and we are going to just make a playlist of songs. The only thing that I can’t seem to get him to agree to is only doing wine and beer. He wants the hard stuff. Fireball, Jack Daniels, vodka you name it, but still. Overall our wedding (including his suit and ring and my dress and ring) will be $4,000 or less. From what I’ve heard from you, friends and family members that’s a really cheap wedding.
My twin sister is getting married 3 months before me, I LOVE her wedding dress and I half jokingly told her I'll just wear dress when she's done with it! 🤣😂🤣
I saved money by looking at city-owned venues such as Women's clubs. The traditional wedding venues were charging $5,000 - $8,000 for a Friday or Saturday. The city owned venue? $1500 for 4 hours plus 5 hours for set-up/break-down. Tables and chairs included. Each additional hour is $200 so we're adding an hour for the ceremony to be held at the same location. It gave us extra funds to actually have a day of coordinator service. I also went with a smaller local catering company so she was able to upgrade certain things without additional costs. Plastic plates but real silverware - I'll take it.
I’m stinking lucky to have a wedding venue at a brewery. The thing is that my fiancé’s uncle owns it and he is letting us use it for free. Little does he know, my fiancé and I will definitely tip him for letting us use it. We will be having a wedding of at least 60 or less people so we won’t be spending so much.
As far as food goes, we will actually have Honey Baked ham. 😛 Our wedding will be on December next year so it’ll be like a little Christmas dinner so to speak. From the looks of how things go, I’m gonna document how much we spent and saved so I’m stoked about it!

Currently, I work some weekends, making a Saturday weekend equally awkward for me.
No florals! They are expensive & literally die the same day. We’re getting married in December, so that means faux poinsettias, pine cones, pine tree branches, etc. My MIL graciously made all of the bouquets & boutonnières. I got all of the florals, and decor the day after Christmas last year, for about 70-90% off! Getting married in a church-free, doing a open bar that my in-laws will pay for because they are Catholic… enough said 😂 and we’re going with a 5 star bbq buffet that is $12/person!

All inclusives can be great esp in areas where rentals aren’t around unless I get married at a park I gotta pay thousands just to rent and then pay for food vs the inclusive not having those giant rental fees
I’m in southwest Florida and as far as the all inclusive I found the opposite. Venues where you just rented and had to bring in other venders cost a ton. I was looking at 4-9k to just rent them. Then I’d have to find catering, alcohol, bartenders etc. I ended up booking a country club with plated sirloin/salmon, open bar for 2 hours total was 12k, for 80 people. I looked around for months and it was by far the best price. Had I gone with a barn or maybe something like that it might of been cheaper, but that wasn’t what I was going for.

I saved money on my wedding by buying my dress resale online. $1,100 dress for $400? Yes please! And I had a family friend do the alterations. I also bought fake florals, wreaths, and baskets wholesale to diy the bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, centerpieces, and ceremony decor. We're going with a city-owned historic home for our ceremony and it's right next door to the brewing company that we're having the reception at and we're getting our cake from a local, small town baker. Lots of opportunities to save $$! My wedding is only a month away, can't wait!!
I lucked out and on Facebook found someone who had just had a wedding and was selling all of her decor, including artificial flowers, centerpieces etc. I bought her whole lot for about $200 and have all of my centerpieces, almost all of the florals and ceremony decor covered.
I’m literally gonna have mine in a backyard with around 35 guests, no alcohol and a family member will be doing our flowers since they have a flower shop . I also will do a drop off catering , also I know a guy from that restaurant so I’ll be getting a discount 😂
We are doing an hour open bar with beer, wine & soda… the package we are doing will include a signature cocktail during cocktail hour.
ADDITIONAL TIP: USE YOUR NETWORKS! We discovered that a family friends spouse worked at an all inclusive wedding venue and gets a family and friends discount when booking the space. This was a huge money saver and greatly helped our budget. You probably have more connections than you think. Put it out there that you are planning on a budget and see what connections/resources/advice your social circles may be able to offer. Good luck everyone! Remember that having a tiered cake adds money. If you don't stack 'em it costs less. We saved $200 off our cake just by buying two different cakes unstacked. Instead of $350, we spent $150.
You can also buy (or borrow) different height stands to get a similar feel with all the beauty but less cash.
Wait... no shots at a wedding?! Unheard of here (Upper Midwest). As someone who worked a lot of weddings as a bartender, that was our bread and butter of the night. But also here very few people do an open bar at all.
The hard part is venues near me that are cheaper, I don't like 😞 or the cheaper venue plus food catering equals the same cost per person as the all-inclusive (not including decorations or bar) 😅

I am curious to hear more perspective about holding a wedding on a weekday. We have a special date in mind that means a lot to us and it lands on a Tuesday (for 2021). While we know that this could be a challenge for folks, is it too selfish? The idea isnt to reduce our count or save on costs (though it is a perk), we really just want our wedding on that date.
I’m hosting my wedding on a Thursday. Not selfish, just know that some people will be unable to attend. I’d recommend planning the wedding the wedding to not end too late. For ours, we’re hosting our wedding from 5-8 pm so people could technically leave work early and still go to work the next day if they want.
Mine is 4/22/22 which is our 10yr anniversary and Dallas on a Friday. If it was another weekday we would prob still do it bc that’s the sat we want to marry/celebrate. My co worker just set her date and it’s in. Thur! The people who want to be there will be. It’s not selfish, it’s your day.
STUDENTS/NEWLY started/apprentices !!!... hair/makeup/photo/dj/schools will cost less because they do it for credits OR need x amount of time for a credit to complete a coarse and therefore will save you! AND add to their portfolio and are typically more flexible with their personalities and no do going ho about something being done a specific timeline
The venue we were excited about the owner has been super flaky before we even have the contract in our hands. Makes me sad but I think we should look elsewhere 😕
Is it ever acceptable to have a post wedding brunch or lunch where guests also but their own food/beverages and invite guests who were NOT invited to the wedding?
The beautiful thing about planning your wedding is you can do whatever you want! As long as you let your guests know in advance so they're not expecting something and not get it. We're doing a super casual reception with buffet finger foods and appetizers. It's not "traditional" but it fits what we want our wedding to be and we save money.

I know opting out of a reception in favour of a restaurant lunch is fairly common, my cousin did it, but normally the food is paid for. My cousin did so; he got married around 10 am and then we had lunch at a brunch restaurant our grandfather used to work at. They also cut their cake and that was it - I think they got a pretty good group discount and since they didn't have to pay for the venue itself, it only cost $40/head for the reception. Although inviting people to the reception only is quite common. Some people (especially in the older generation) may be a bit offended, but it's not uncommon and can be a great way of having a smaller intimate wedding.
We're getting married on a Thursday... venues near me are expensive. 7500 for weekend, or 1000 for a week day... we decided to do a week day because our total budget is 10-1500 max.

Depends how far in advance you send out your save the dates or invites. Personally I'd book the day off work for a family member or friend who's wedding is during the week because it's important to me to attend. But at the same time I wouldn't expect everyone to do the same for mine, I would expect those closest to me to though because ultimately it's them that are missing out on my wedding day because they didn't want to book the time off work. It's something to consider that maybe not everyone will come but if they care and are given plenty of notice, they'll make it work xxx
The worst wedding I have ever been to was on a Friday. Lots of people talked about skipping lunch at work to make it to the wedding on time. They had a drop caterer and the workers from the restaurant were extremely unprofessional. They did not have food for anyone who marked the RSVP that they had allergies. They ran out of food so a lot of people did not eat and had to leave. There was no water on the tables so everyone had too much alcohol and no food. The tables were a mess because the venue didn't have anyone to bus. I'm sure they saved a ton but should have thought about the details a little.

I'm renting my wedding dress, I'm an older bride I will only wear it one time, so I decided to rent one. as far as alcohol, beer is what I will get.

I SERIOUSLY wish the stigma against cash bars would end. I don't think it's rude, at least in the area I'm from unless you're rich, it's always cash bar, and sometimes beer/wine hosted for cocktail hour. That being said if it's not the norm where you're from I understand hesitance but what gets me is the cash bar shaming. Stop making brides feel bad for not being able to afford something, or what they choose to prioritize. Even if I were from somewhere hosted bars were the norm, I wouldn't be angry or put out at someone who had a cash bar. They invited you to their wedding to spend the day sharing their love. They paid for food, entertainment etc and that's much more than enough. If someone is really THAT mad about not getting free booze, then I feel like they're missing the point of attending a wedding. I do think if a person has a cash bar though they absolutely need to make that clear on their wedding website and/or details card.
Uh I don't think you have been to an Asian wedding at all. We always serve liquor and shots. I was just at my best friend's wedding on Saturday, 8/14. I was the maid of honor. Each table had a bottle of Hennessy Vsop. She had 20 tables. And we passed out shot glasses as party favors before reception started. I'm having my wedding next year and have already stocked up on liquor. We will have beer, wine, Hennessy Vsop and Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

I think having a wedding on a Friday is rude. Yes it saves the bride and groom money, but collectively it costs the guests more for their annual leave/leave without pay.
Guests dont have to come. Additionally, lots of regions are 24 hour areas which mean a ton of people have days off that aren't weekends. Culturally for you it could be rude, but in a bunch of places, it's just people doing it on their 'weekends'
