    VALUE OF AMEX POINTS | What Are Amex Points Worth?
    1. In general and on average, Amex points are worth 1.7¢ per point when using Amex transfer partners (example: 10,000 points = $170). However, these types of redemptions are normally achieved with international airlines in a premium cabin during a long-haul flight.
    2. For hotels, car rentals, cruises & vacations booked through the Amex Travel Portal, Amex points are worth a flat rate of 0.7¢ per point (example: 10,000 points = $70).
    3. For flights booked through the Amex Travel Portal and for luxury hotels booked through the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program, Amex points are worth a flat rate of 1.0¢ per point (example: 10,000 points = $100).
    For the purposes of this video, we’ll use 1 Amex Point = 1.7¢ for comparison to other programs.
    The 6 Amex Transfer Partners you should likely AVOID are as follows…
    1. Hilton Honors (1:2) - Hilton Honors points are worth 0.5¢ on average and the program also has dynamic pricing.
    2. Marriott Bonvoy (1:1) - Marriott Bonvoy points are worth 0.7¢ on average and the program also has dynamic pricing.
    3. Choice Privileges (1:1) - Choice Privileges points are worth 0.6¢ on average.
    4. JetBlue True Blue (1:1) - JetBlue points are worth 1.3¢ on average and the program also has 2 major limiting factors that prevent you from getting big, outsized value: (a) It’s a revenue-based rewards program (b) It’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
    5. Delta Air Lines (1:1) - Delta SkyMiles are worth 1.1¢ on average. The program is also subject to dynamic pricing and it’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
    6. Hawaiian Airlines (1:1) - Hawaiian miles are worth 1.0¢ on average. The loyalty program is semi-dynamic in that it has region-based redemption ranges that can vary by demand and fare class. Again, it’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
    EXCEPTIONS
    1. You’ve done the math & it makes sense.
    2. You need to ‘top off’ your balance in another program.
    3. A limited-time transfer bonus is available (and you’ve done the math & it makes sense).
    4. You’re transferring Amex points into miles on Airline A at a loss / breakeven / gain, and then will use those miles to fly on partner Airline B at a GAIN compared to the average Amex point value.

      So what makes these transferrable point cards better than a cobranded hotel/airline card if an Amex point is valued so much higher than a Marriott or Hilton point?

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nickevans4273 - Co-branded cards lock you into 1 program for earning & redeeming. Transferrable point cards allow you to earn rewards that can be converted to a variety of other programs. In other words, it's basically the difference of being able to earn & redeem with 1 brand or dozens of brands (including the flexibility to redeem on any airline, any hotel, any rental car, etc. that's available).

      @@MarkReese I definitely understand that! It just stinks that a lot of the typical transfer partners for people (Marriott, Hilton, etc.) seem to not be the right choice when transferring.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nickevans4273 - Correct, those tend to provide the lowest point values when compared to what you can get from some of the international airline partners. However, it doesn't have to be about getting the biggest / best value in the world on every redemption. Sometimes simply not paying cash & having a great trip is enough.

      @@MarkReese great point! I’m sure most of us would probably fall into that category- doing what is best for us, even if it’s not the “best” redemption value. Thanks for clearing that all up. Recently traveled to Palm Springs from Phoenix. The cost of flying American and staying at the Kimpton was higher than transferring points out to Qantas and then to American . Also, booking direct with Kimpton was lower with a better room than going with Amex Fine Hotels program. The cost was still higher even with the $200 hotel credit. The best transfer deal I've experienced so far was transferring to airlines only. I had to xfer to Qantas because Amex doesn't have AA as a partner BUT you can xfer to an international air lines and then transfer to a domestic airlines.

    just did my first transfer of points from Amex to Delta (first time flying Delta as well) for a trip to Miami. like 1.3/point which is definitely not great but wanted a "free" flight. No one ever seems to mention in videos on here about credit cards that they charge a transfer fee. then had to wait hours for points to show up after transfer and by that time the price had gone up and had to transfer another 4,000 points over. Delta also charges extra for some seats, refunding for cancelations, and checked bags (no wonder I love Southwest so much!). My free flight cost me $105 but I guess better than the $640 it would have cost me.

    Kind of feel like Hilton should be rated at 1CPP because of the 1:2 transfer ratio. 20,000 Hilton points = $100 (.5CPP) but you only sent 10,000 MR points so 10,000 points = $100 (1CPP). Still not a good redemption but I still think you need to factor it this way.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I see what you mean, and that's a valid perspective. However, I cannot do that. The moment I start claiming Hilton points = 1.0¢ each, then people will start thinking that's the case for all situations, and that'd be incorrect in a major way.
      Transfer ratios ≠ point value
      Point value ≠ transfer ratios
      They're 2 separate variables that work together in an equation.
      In this 1 specific use case with Amex, the _end result_ is an effective 1.0¢ value, but that does not change the value of an individual point.

      The answer could vary by situation, so you'll have to do the math. The upgrade itself via Amex points gives a 1.0¢ per point value. When i first got my Amex i saw they were doing 1000 mr = 1250 bonvoy and i thought it wasn’t great but ok at best for some situations it might make sense. Then i realized the normally transfer ratio is 1:1 and that’s horrible for bonvoy. Especially when marriott gives you points for almost anything.

    UGH! Chase's point redemption is sooooooo much better then AMEX, but AMEX services are so much better then Chase, if Chase beefed up their services I would switch to them in a heart beat. Sad this video came out now because I transferred 50k MR points to Hilton to book a reservation. UGH. I would love to use Chase BUT the services with AMEX are so much better. What im confused about now is everyone says "dont use the portal, earn your status and book directly and transfer MR points." Mark can you guide me here. TY

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Up to you and what you value. Booking directly mostly matters with hotels. With hotels, I personally really value having (a) my current elite benefits recognized (b) earning credits towards status (c) earning points in the other program on top of my credit card points and (d) having an easier time getting a hold of customer service. For all of those reasons, I nearly always book direct when a hotel program I care about is involved.
      With airlines, a/b/c above don't matter. You'll still receive your benefits, earn credits, and earn points when using portals as long as your airline loyalty # is put on the reservation. The only hassle would then be getting a hold of customer service when irregular operations, cancelations, etc. occur. However, I still nearly always book direct w/ flights. That said, do what's best for you.

      Ok, double checked on BA. No luck, I think the alliances are cracking down. I could find flights to Europe from the US all day with avios but nothing in the US domestic, even hub to hub, ie DFW, PHX, MIA, etc. In the book avios section there was a 600 fuel charge + 50k avios from dfw to lhr. I think it has to do with locality, if you're in the US they route you through AA or BA in the UK. I am tempted to figure out if I can try this with Air France / KLM. This is my experience, if you can book domestic through BA let me know in the event I missed something.

My main goal is not to pay my air fare as i will spend money on our car rental😁. Definitely don’t agree with your valuation of Hilton. They’re Amex’s best hotel partner by far. If you utilize transfer bonuses and the 5th night free perk, it’s not hard to get decent value, even domestically. The last time I used Hilton points, I hit 2.1CPP

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Royce - all good & totally valid perspective 💯
      This video was more about general, raw point value without limited-time transfer boosts (which affect many programs, not just Hilton) and without adding in additional "unique program benefits" (e.g. 5th night free, resort fee policies, etc.).
      I also said Marriott was a bad transfer partner, but then showed a 2.5¢ redemption to illustrate that great value is still possible, albeit rare.
      It's possible to turn a variety of "bad" redemptions into good ones, but with it being "easy" to get 3.0¢, 4.0¢, 5.0¢ or greater with a number of Amex's international flight partners, by default that makes the hotel programs among the "worst" possible redemptions, at least mathematically on paper.

    UPDATE: signed up for air France and came to find that it is the same issue with skyteam. Better yet when virgin was the connecting carrier the valuations hold true, with delta, no.
    I am beginning to think that in my opinion the domestic carriers are throwing a wrench into booking with a foreign carrier website in their respective alliance, same may be true abroad.
    They appear to be (my opinion) making it a hassle on purpose with points abroad to keep the points in house. Cash was easier to book with foreign carriers for foreign flights only. Couldn't find flights in af or ba searches. I used PHX, DFW, and CLT flights as data points. I excluded CA and NY on purpose.
    IMO the best reliable AMEX redemption in the US is schwab if you have that card. With chase southwest and hyatt appear to be the good ones there. Is the value maximized with these selections, maybe not but they seem to be reliable for transfers in the US that have some good value and are not likely to get devalued.
    Let me know what you think. This what I have found on my end. AMEX is a damn good Card provider but looking to maximize the value of the points is starting to look like a hassle. I'm not sure if the issues Airlines are having is the root of the issue or not but it appears so.
