FILM DESCRIPTION:
The cycle of life on Earth hangs in the balance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the loss of his wife, whom he dearly loved, William is content with his life, and he's very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Susan (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad's 65th birthday, William begins displaying the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn't want to go. Joe, on the other hand, is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal -- William will have some time to get his affairs in order, and Joe will wait and see what it's like to be a human being. Joe decides that he likes it very much when he falls in love with Susan, but negotiating the slippery slopes of romance is no easier for Joe than for any ordinary man. Meet Joe Black is an updated version of Alberto Casella's play Death Takes a Holiday, which was adapted for the screen in 1934.

@@amandaaloveess Claire Forlani's character first met this man at a coffee shop before he died in a traffic accident. He clearly caught her interest during their conversation, but they went their separate ways after the chat. Unknown by her the man's body was later possessed by the entity Death so that he could experience life for a time. Death had no knowledge of the chat at the coffee shop. I think that Death realizes she is in love with the man she met at the coffee shop that day.
It's hard to say goodbye. But it's better if you get the chance to. Some people don't even get the chance to say goodbye.

Two things happen in this scene, first Death realize how ravenous he is, in that he took the person she actually fell for. It also highlights how important and precious time is.

The emotions that both of them display is unlike anything I've ever seen in a film. They have the best chemistry out of any male or female actors I've ever seen. The long pauses, the way they gaze and look into each other's eye's is the way that two people who are truly and madly in love look at each other. It's so special to see because people aren't even capable of this kind of love and warmth anymore. I absolutely love this movie. Anyone who wants to experience what "true love" is, buy this
V Williams - And add to that the kind of love that's shown between the other characters! - The dad and Susan. I would watch the movie just for that!! The dad and Allison - a different love, but still beautiful. The love between Allison and her husband - precious! He always supported her! This film is inspiring on so many levels!

Absolutely. It seems like hardly anyone cared about this film, but I thought it was one of the most moving I've ever seen. The soundtrack killed, and Brad captured a true depth of this character in a beautifully subtle way. I feel very inspired when I watch this movie.

She didn't fell in love with his body. It was the WHAT he said and what he DID in the coffee shop.
When he says goodbye to her, he lets her find out who he really is (death), in the same way that he did with Bill. She then realises that he's come to take her father.
In the end when "Joe" returns from the bridge she starts to realise that it's the same person she met in the coffe shop.
Whoever wrote that story is absolutely brilliant.

I still think it is death pretending the coffee guy returns, since he replies “It’ll come to us” at the end, which is the same as what she said after they made love(the coffee guy did not know this) . Death just wants her to be happy having the coffee guy again.

Rewatching this scene, I just realized that Joe is extra sad because not only did he have to say goodbye to the woman he loved but in that moment when they were talking about their first meeting, he realized that she fell in love with the man in the coffee shop :'(

Anybody else wondering how awkward it was introducing “Joe” to everyone because he has no idea what happened after he died.
What about the fact that Joe Black was a made up name. What was the dude’s real name before he died? Was he just supposed to start calling himself Joe in spite of the fact his real name was Charlie?

I would think that he was kindly kept abreast of the goings on...i mean despite having to work his way back into her panties of course, as for his made up name, that can be explained by his actually being some sort of irs agent thus the need for a fake identity and who knows he may have actually been involved in some capacity in auditing or something along those lines of bill's business dealings and therefore would have had knowledge of the douchenozzle trying to pull what he was! I mean in some cases suspension of disbelief no doubt but still...
Knowing how death works in this movie and how swiftly things shift on implication, I feel like he tied a few loose ends behind his back

Just after this we see Susan's face at the very moment that something inside her senses that Joe is actually someone other-worldly, and she recoils involuntarily. The camera then switches to Joe's face, and in that moment it is incredibly easy to believe that Death itself is looking out through those expressionless eyes. Just for a second one could believe that Pitt is in fact thousands of years old. Amazing acting from both of them, but it's Pitt's performance as Joe Black that makes the movie so much more than just an enjoyable one.
+sonorman44 This movie wrecks me. The story is deep and like you said, Pitt's acting is so superb. His facial expressions tell everything that his dialogue isn't and that is so refreshing to watch. He convinces you that he's both ancient in age and new to life, and he keeps a sense of innocence about him that you never see in a man. Just simply refreshing. I love love love this movie.
All the actors give a sterling performance, especially Anthony Hopkins. The beautiful music by Thomas Newman goes a long way to making the movie what it is too. You know, I shudder when I think of any other actors playing the roles; the mark of a great casting director is one who knows how to choose the character actors to back up the major stars. Jackpot!
Yes,the movie's theme is a wacky one, but it could so easily have been a terrible movie in the hands of anyone else but Martin Brest. OK, so we have to suspend our belief throughout, but for me it's a relatively simple exercise.

So many questions.... I love how you explained that. I wonder how she and her father sense who he was . She sensed it lasted and the father sensed it early on...its almost as if he temporarily granted them the ability to. Similar to the way he enabled the Caribbean elderly lady to sense something peaceful when he touched her. I also wonder why he didn't stay longer if he wanted to be with her so badly. I loved this movie but I think the ending with both men walking off could've been written better. Beautiful though

Just watched this movie. I can fully admit that I bawled my eyes out at this scene and the very end of the movie when she meets the real man in the body. This is truly the most beautiful film ever.
Brad Pitt's interpretation here is ridiculously good. I mean, the amount of pain and sorrow going through his eyes in this scene is unbelievable. Coupled with his desire and love for her. Such an incredibly intense moment. Awesome
I remember seeing a quote of his talking about how he got into character. Something about “you have to consider what this master of death has seen, and how he would feel about death, love, loneliness, etc”
Really showed me this is one of his best roles yet. I think he absolutely nailed it. Imagine being able to make an audience fall in love with Death.. that’s talent.

When she says she can go with him, it's one of the most heartbreaking parts of any movie I have seen. This movie is a bit uneven, but the ending is very good.

Two of the most perfect faces
THIS is still the BEST scene from the movie. I get goosebumps listening to the score... one of my favorite movies when it came out almost 22 years ago, and still one of my all time favorites. definitely under rated.
I remember my husband and I seeing this in 1998 and we were both quiet as we left the theater. We got in the car and my husband turned to me and said "Look, I'm just going to say this and get it over with. Brad Pitt is the most beautiful human being on this planet. I could not take my eyes off of him in any scene because of his sheer beauty...like looking at a beautiful sculpture. You appreciate the beauty." What about you? I agreed and said that he absolutely took my breath away in scene after scene.
In all of Hollywood's years, there have been handsome men, manly men, good looking men, and pretty boys. But only one beautiful man and that is Brad Pitt. He was at his peak in this movie.

Men have wanted men for pretty most of human history. I have never been attracted in that way. I can appreciate handsome. Claire Forlani is breathtaking in this movie. I could not take my eyes off of her in any scene. Beauty is fleeting. The dialogue about a man and woman taking care of each other, powerful yet rare. The divorce rate is so high. It is a reflection of the fact that most are look at the wrapper of an empty package. In this scene, Claire is smitten and senses there is something very forbidden about her attraction. She ends up grieving her father more than the man Joe Black appears to be. Nice wrapper on the Grim Reaper. She loses both ways. I just want to hold her.

This is my favourite movie ever. Not only is the cast gorgeous and well cast, but the music sceneries and camera work is so superbly chosen and done.
00:22 The writing is so good. One of the best lines right here. "If you're trying to tell me my future you're looking on the wrong side." So many levels to that line. He's looking at the back of her hand while wondering if he should take her with him to the "other side". While she is talking about her hand, he doesn't even know which side of life she should stay on. He's struggling with taking her with him to the other side and wondering if that's wrong or not. It's so good.

Because nothing beats true love. There’s only one main character in this film without it. And the immense love the other characters express for each other are beyond what words can express. A daughter’s love for her father, despite realizing he isn’t her favorite( without being jealous of that favoritism)...his infinite love for his favorite, and their “daddy’s girl” bond...major attraction between two love birds that is so compelling they have the desire to build a relationship of genuine, deep love. Love expressed through painful sacrifice. A couple’s love so genuine that’s expressed nonverbally to the degree the audience can feel it.
The kind of love everyone on this planet yearns for.
That’s why.
I haven't been in love in a very long time. This is probably what it should be like for a man and a woman. And if its true love nothing in this world will break it no matter what. Mystical scene and beautiful.
How about how Anthony Hopkins (as Susan's father) describes love in the helicopter in the beginning of the movie?! The writing... Anthony Hopkins's delivery ... WOW!!! No WONDER death had to come back to experience that!! That's a great description that we should all aspire to!! Gorgeously poetic.
-And how about how Anthony Hopkins described meeting his late wife later in the movie?! He remembered what she was wearing ... what they ate... The writing was touching and fantastic, and Anthony Hopkins brought those words to life!! His performance was perfection.

This is a very well acted movie from everyone.
the level of talent involved in this production means it could only be what it is , a CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE .
Her looks are like a cross between Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Garner. Her eyes are tantalizing. They way the music swells when they kiss, so bittersweet and heartbreaking. The score is wonderful.

Correct but in the end she'll fall in love with him (again). That's the reason Death took his body.
But that made sense, too. She had just met the coffee shop guy - you could immediately see the potential - but he was younger, and not as deep yet in his maturity. So they would be growing into the deeper love. But Death had been around literally forever, and was there expressly to experience a deep love and connection with life. So their connection was immediately on a deep level!
Like great wines that movies when it was presented the first times to the public astonished shoccked and infuriated. But 25 years later it is finally re discovered as pure perfection. Brad Pitt is sublime, the young actress Susan is a miracle of tenderness, all fits in all. Bravo, brilliant, emotional bliss.

She reminded him(death) everything that they talked in the coffee shop. Because she somehow knew(even though she didnt want to but still she knew)that he is not the guy she met on the coffeshop. This scene is special because of this. They both knew that his is not the same man. But still they love each other so much. The first reason why she had this feelings for him was because of all the thing Real Joe told her when they first met. But then she fell in love with the Death not Joe she knows it and he(death) knows it. Thats why its sad

It makes you really wonder, did she really fall in love with Joe(or whatever his real name is)? Or did she fall in love with death? Joe was the one that made her feel something in that coffee shop and made her mind wonder what could be, but death was the one that seduced her heart

You can see the right moment where Death realized she fell in love with him twice... but he was never the first guy in the first place. And how selfish would be for him taking her too if she realizes who he really is, even if she loves him for what he is. :(

I agree the movie is underrated. This film made me a fan of Brad. He played the part with such class and subtlety. Since he was death being human for the first time, his character had to possess a type of innocence, even though he was more than centuries od. Pitt captured that subtltybeautifully and believably without going overboard. Not an easy thing to do for an actor.

I remember when I left home at 18 I had to say good bye to my then girlfriend who I fell madly in love. She wanted to stay with her family while I wanted to move to the big city and start a new life. She cried asking if I'd come back to visit or if maybe I could just wait a bit longer then she'd have the courage to come with me. At the time I decided to leave and all i can remember is her pleading with me not to leave. I know i did the right thing by leaving but not a day goes by I don't wish I made a different choice. I never saw her again and I haven't fell in love with anyone the same way again.

i’m sure she maybe feels the same way as you do and you still have a soft spot in her heart. maybe try to reach out to her again? try a reconciliation? you only live once, it wouldn’t hurt to try to reach out and see if anything is still possible. especially if you still have such strong feelings for her❤️
All i can say is if you fell that way talk to her tell her how you feel and who know what could happen somthing bad or something good take a risk because life to short for what ifs.

No matter how you see it, the car crash victim's loved one was key in bringing him back. She made love with him while he was in the grip of death. You could say she brought him back to life. Her vocation as a doctor is highly symbolic.
I remember watching this, then went on holiday, and spotted a lad my age who looked like brad in this…, we ended up in same hotel. we ended up having a holiday romance, i was 16 he was 17. It was the most romantic thing ever for me, i had soundtrack for this in my head the first time we kissed. Everything said about love and how it should make you feel in film was exactly how i felt with him ..
I am late 30s and i still remember everything about that holiday.
This was an absolutely powerful, mystical love scene. 2 souls meet at the very right time and then they have to say good bye to each other. Claire forlanis acting in this was so superbe and so real. At the time of when this movie was made i believe that she was the most stunning and fabulous woman on the planet💥☀️🔥⭐

Meet Joe Black is one of those movies that you have to see at a matinee in an IMAX theatre in a big city anywhere to fit the scale of what they did. Aesthetically this reminds me of those movies that looked amazing in a premiere.

This is the first movie I saw in the theatre after my dad passed away. I cried so hard and couldn’t move till the next showing.
I'm so sorry for your loss!! That would be heartbreaking to see this movie then! -I can see why you would react that way! I was super close with my dad, and Susan's relationship with her dad was what I love the most about this movie!! Anthony Hopkins plays that with perfection, and the tenderness that they have between them is obvious with each scene that they're together! Just beautiful - and inspiring!When he danced with her at the party, it was too precious for words!
