    To answer the game speed question, there is no good reason to have game code logic tied to the frame rate of the game. The solution is to use a different logic loop set to a specific speed on a tick based system, and then separate the rendering loop to be able to render at whatever frame rate needed. This shit should be basic stuff and has been done for well over 10 years.

      ***** I'd say it's a different approach. It absolutely does create a more seamless experience to have loading behind-the-scenes, but trapping people in elevators can get... annoying, and having stuff load in the background means you're running the disk, which can be an issue, especially if you're doing other IO in the background too.
      Obviously it can be done, but the fact is that there's only so much resources that can be put into a project. Someone working on seamless background level loading means they're not working on something else, and it has implications on how level design and the game in general works.

      I'm reminded of one game I played a while ago that is kind of amazing in that regard. Nothing, and I mean, *nothing* is hidden from you. The game tells you exactly how likely you are to hit or get hit, who the enemy is aiming at, what it's gonna do, how much damage you do (and if there's damage variance, how much that is), what each stat does, and so on. And you know the ever-famous "you didn't steal from the boss, now there's an item you'll never get, AND the bestiary entry will be incomplete forever"? You can buy the item from a special vendor (which also functions as a buyback system and lets you buy the stuff that was in treasure chests you couldn't pick up because you had a full stack of that item), and pay the library in the hub to fill out bestiary entries, as well as tell you where that enemy you missed might be.
      That was actually a large part of the draw to me, just _how_ open-handed the game was with you.

    This was the first RPG I actually finished when I was a kid. The thing is - one should really point out that this game has Multiplayer functions. There are 2 other characters that should be controllable by other players. Singleplayer you never get to play them. Back in the time, I did not have internet that is affordable when left running. And also online playing was not supported as I remember - so it was LAN multiplayer-only - meaning you need two or more copies of the game!? what the... heck. ONE MORE THING: The game has its own level editor - I made new levels with it when I was a kid - was kind of fun but I never found anyone else making new levels for this game. In a Nutshell, the game feels like it was released way too early. It has its own engine, own level editor, other player characters with their own skill progression ratings... what the - there is so much that was never used in the campaign. It always felt like the game was meant to be much greater - the combat animations were revolutionary - and in the end, it feels like they run out of budget and had to release it early - leaving great modding tools behind which nobody interested. Revenant was supposed to be a jack of all trades - the second character was a warrior without magic abilities but better combat strength, and the third character was a mage - faster magic regeneration but much weaker in weapon combat. I have never seen this game in multiplayer - it would be so interesting to actually see it once. I also doubt that anybody played it in multiplayer.

    Wow, almost no point in writing this given how old the video is.
    BUT.
    What you said about magenta being the transparency colour used in the game (which is quite a common colour to use as transparency in sprite based games) got me thinking. The magenta swing ark of the sword is most likely supposed to be transparent also. There's a gradient (from solid colour to transparent) in the ark of the swing, which implies to me that the colour and its intensity is a curve value which is used to define the intensity of an effect. The most likely explanation would be that any textures that fell (from the position of the camera vs the position of the ark) beneath the the ark of the swing would be warped according to the gradient of the magenta, to make it look like the blade was 'cutting' through the air.
    Gradients being used in this way is extremely common in games and colour values are a nice easy, visual way of representing values from zero to one.

    Yes, CPU speed and framerates will always be issues for video games. The problem lies in game loops and how games decide to work around them. Game loops are typically done as fast as possible, but they can be split into sections (often an update loop and a draw loop) with different rates for each, primarily the update loop being capped and the draw loop going as fast as possible or being limited by the graphics card.
    Here in lies a plethora of problems, primarily when porting. PCs can run much faster than even today's consoles, and if a game was made for them, they might not being doing all of the best practices when converting. My guess is for a game like Dead Rising 3, the game is use to capping at 30 and may not be limiting the update loop. This could affect collisions and timing as seen in games like this one. It will always need considering for developers. What often happens is the difference between frames will be calculated and that number used for updating speeds and whatnot. This theoretically will make things look the same speed regardless of framerate, but depending on how it's handled, really slow computers can end up having objects fly through walls.
    These problems are likely getting weirder and more difficult to tackle with the advent of threading and multi-core CPUs. These even more separated loops (working at the same time asynchronously) can lead to extremely strange and unwanted behavior, especially when dealing with the numerous CPUs and GPUs that are using them.
    Developers shouldn't be letting this happen anymore, but since many games start on consoles first (with standardized hardware and many times different methods of structuring game loops), the porting process will almost always lead to unforeseen issues. The developers of Dead Rising 3 should have thought ahead, but budgets and deadlines will often trump best practices.
    So far I've been developing my loops the more PC centric way. I update/draw as fast as possible and find what's called "delta time" to make things always look like they're running at the same rate. It can and has lead to really bizarre issues but depending on the kind of game can be great for maximum flexibility. From what I've read, the best method is to cap the update loop (allowing for consistent collision detection) and then use delta time for interpolation in the draw loop. This means a game may be updating at 15 frames per second but still draw at like 200. I've heard multiplayer games use this method heavily, and having dealt with network code, I can completely understand why.
    TL;DR: Framerates and CPU speeds will always lead to issues. This shit's still crazy.

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And I thought we figured that out in the 80s after the 80286 was faster than the 8088.
      I mean, we only had 40 years to notice the problem and work on it. (that was longer than we had to solve the Y2K issue)
      And even consoles don't have standardized hardware anymore. Or at least not how they used to. With all the "pro" and "X" versions of consoles, with better specs than the base model. And added to that, consoles have more configuration options for the games nowadays, so people might run different FOV or make different choice between eye candy and performance modes.

    Some things are just beyond programmers. I can recall one programmer breaking limit to object vertices accepted by game engine, allowing more details to be put on object and enabling modders to create amazing models... unless object has 2^x vertices, those just crashed the game. You could create very detailed object with 2047 vertices, but if you did it with 2048, the game would crash. The programmer had no clue why it happened.

    • @QayLikeKay
      @QayLikeKay 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Necro as fuck, but that sounds like a basic buffer overflow.
      Before explaining what that is, for anyone reading, I should first go a little into how the data is laid out. Integer values stored in data hit their value limit on (2^x) - 1, look at a single byte as an explanation. 1 byte is 8 bits, so we have 8 places that can be zero or one, each place that's set to 1 basically adds it's power of 2 to the end value. Well the 8th bit would be 128, and if we were to set all the lesser bits to 1 and add them together we'd get 127, essentially, all the bits before any given bit add up to that bit's power of 2 with 1 taken off. In our 1 byte example the max value we can get is 255 or 2^8 - 1, because the 8th byte is 2^7 = 128, and every byte before it adds up to a total of 127, 127 + 128 = 255. Also you might ask why the 8th bit is 2^7 and not 2^8, that's because the first bit is 2^0 = 1, otherwise we'd have no odd numbers in computing.
      Anyway, to wrap up the issue here is that somewhere in the engine your friend was modding only allotted 11 bytes max for storing the vert count, or there was some buffer stored the actual vertices that also was hard capped, either way when you hit 2048 vertices the data started writing over other things that were either important to engine or were outside of program memory (in which case the OS gives you a swift kick in the ass). It could be that 2047 verts was also overwriting things in memory outside of it's allotted space, but you were 'lucky' and this data wasn't being used anymore or was something non-critical like debug logging. Hoo boy, that was more writing than I thought, sorry.

    "You can't cut someone's head off with your fist"
    Not with that attitude...

  • @SinaelDOverom
    @SinaelDOverom 9 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    I'm here to counter some of Ross's arguments:
    First off the game was balanced around it's combat system (and it was supposed to be munch more complex than what was left in the game)
    1) The controls are well suited for the combat system presented - it's meant to be way more action-ey (combos, dodges, timed blocks etc.) than your standard Diablo-like hack and slash. Later, Nox would use similar control scheme.
    2)This version is obviously bugged more than mine, because in my version (which is Russian), all lines and dialogue play as they should. The colored font background/outlines, as well as most of graphical glitches are there because game was not adapted for modern DirectX properly (actually it was not adapted at all). Pre-DX8 games often have bugs and glitches like that. When run at the original hardware of the time, there were no such bugs. You better running this game in a window (with screen colors turned to 16bit) , and I also remember seeing a fan patch that fixes quite a lot of bugs on some fan forum.
    You can also set all settings sliders do vie a command prompt on a game's shortcut (yeah, that checkbox and sliders too)
    4)Those are not "light/heavy/medium", those are "chop/slash/thrust" attacks and are called so in the manual. "chop" deals most damage, "slash" hits wide and damages several enemies, "thrust" has farther reach most of the time and with some weapons can penetrate armor better. Each attack works differently depending on your weapon (thrusting with a hammer ain't going to do much)
    5)Finishing moves aren't random, but are special to each enemy and must be performed with a specific weapon and specific attack, while enemies health vs your power relation is low enough (I think 3 or so). There are also enemy-type specific moves, like kicking small enemies away (druugs, spiders, dogs), or impale-throw that works with sword and any humanoid enemy light enough for lock to throw. Or a badass ogrok beatdown.
    6)Spell system actually follows some logic, which allows you to get some spells not listed in scrolls by following a principle (same was later used in Arx Fatalis)
    Locke was supposed to be one of several characters, and he was supposed to be a "spellsword" type - someone who can both swing a blade, and support himself with some spell. Other classes are only available in multiplayer, and a good Wizard rocks there (he did while servers were up). Also later you'd learn a mana drain spell that allows you to regen it off your enemies.
    7)Speed. At that time many reflex-oriented games used bound-to-framerate practice to slow the game down when it was stuttering, thus allowing players with not-so-powerful rigs to actually walk through the game instead of dying every time there were awesome spell effects on screen.
    8)Load time. Because you set it up to load world in big chunks, and load it right away, that's why. Fiddling with load settings will get you the smooth gameplay with little to no loading. (Also DR3 works great with uncapped 60-100 fps))
    9) IIRC you get the advanced stats by Ctrl->click ing the stat in question. You can examine weapons, stats, items and enemies in game.
    10) You don't have anough HP because you neither block nor dodge, nor use special attacks. They were put there for a reason. Knock the dog to stop it from running away, dodge dragon fire to awoid being lit on flames, block enemy attacks and use proper weapon (and attack type), your enemy is not resilent to in order to win.
    11) Boss battle is actually simple: LEARN THE COMBO MOVES FROM DOJO. Like somebody told you at the start of the game. Block, dodge, and, if you feel cheaty, stun him with some basic fire magic, or swamp swirl.

    "Maybe it's because every save file created 1,500 files for some reason" -- haha, that's a new one!
    I think that may tie into your loading problems. I do some amateur programming, and I noticed that writing a lot of small files is way more intensive for my computer than writing a big one. Especially when dealing with latency on a network drive or something, I could probably write a single 1GB file twice as quickly as I could write 100 10MB files. There's something about the new file creation, finding a location on the drive for it or something, that slows down the whole process.
    It also helps a lot to read and write data in one large piece, which was going to be my other possible suggestion for the rough load times. If I have 10 variables to save, like player health=66, mana=33, str=10, location=valley, ect... I can create one big string of data that looks like "66|33|10|valley" and save that all at once in one file, or I can choose to iterate through every variable one by one and save it, so save health=66, then save mana=33. This way takes way longer because every save command is accessing a file on the hard drive, instead of the program just compiling all the variables in memory and accessing a file once.
    Just some fun fact tidbits I picked up doing corporate programming on a sloppy server :P

    I program games a lot, so I can answer why game companies cap their FPS.
    You know how some CPUs are faster than others? This can cause games to run faster on some systems than others. So how did most sane people fix this? Grab the "delta time" (i.e. milliseconds between each frame) multiply that by the movement speed of a character (or any time sensitive operation) and then use that. That way, if the game is running at 10 FPS or 100 FPS, you'll get the same experience.
    A lot of developers (especially on consoles) are very lazy, and instead of making a proper PC port, they'll just cap the FPS to the console's and call it a day.

    • @TheKeelanstuart
      @TheKeelanstuart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love these Game Dungeons reviews! Have you played Dark Souls? That's a game where you can dump everything into strength and wield a big-ass weapon that hits like a dump-truck and whether you hit the enemy is determined by your skill, not by bull-shit random chance.
    Also, I heard you mention Elder Scrolls. Do you like Skyrim? I love that game.

      @Chud_Bud_Supreme 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      halfhalo33 Well, first of all, I asked if he PLAYED it, not if he's heard of it. I'm sure he's heard of it more than likely, Playing it of course is something else. I'm not sure what a "core gamer" is (although it does sound like a cute label) but I wouldn't assume Ross is the kind to self-apply meaningless labels, or that as a "core gamer" he MUST have played it, but way to project yourself onto others. Also, no, Skyrim was not my first TES game, but does that matter?
      I don't know what it is, man. Skyrim and Dark Souls are two of my favorite games but I can't mention either without starting something with someone. Too many angry neck-beards.

      A damn shame too. Fallout 1-2 did combat EXACTLY how I like it and the only other games I played that do that are Wasteland 2 and Temple of Elemental Evil. Shame TOEE is completely and utterly broken to the point it's unplayable.
      It really bugs me to no end. I hate party based RPGs with real time combat, the only one I could beat was Planescape Torment and that's because combat is such a negligible part of the game.

    • @leathery420
      @leathery420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How exactly is TOEE broken? Also while planescape, and the other early games made by bioware aren't true turn based games you can set the options so it pauses basically after ever move. If you are looking for modern turn based games I'd recommend Divinity original sin 1, and 2. As well as if you like fallout and wasteland I'd keep an eye on A.T.O.M It's a mix between the first fallout games, and kind of stalker. Takes place in the Soviet block after the bombs have been dropped, and is currently in early access on steam. Also while Obsidian's games Pillars of eternity, and Tyranny aren't turned based they are great CRPGs, and are really picking up the torch that Bioware has dropped. I highly recommend Tyranny for anyone who likes games with tough moral choices. Though if you only play the good guy you may hate yourself a bit afterwards.

    All the problems he listed, among many others, is why I don't really like playing on PC. I want to have fun, not work on a damn machine for hours to get a game to work.

    • @JboneDRS
      @JboneDRS 10 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      That's really only with the older games, some games nowadays will a have a couple problems or two. most PC gamers find fixing the problems worth it for the vastly increased performance and overall better look.

    • @DarthKato
      @DarthKato 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      JulianDRS You still have to go through a lot of shite. Like:
      1- Instillation
      2- Making sure the settings are correct
      3- Making sure that your computer can run it 4- Hackers more frequent in multiplayer
      5- Viruses a more likely occurrence
      6- You have to have a good working knowledge of how computers work and go together, if you want to upgrade/build a computer.
      And this is not including all the crap you have to do if you ARE trying to play an older game. If you prefer it, that's fine, not going to try to change your mind, but its not for me. I want to have FUN, not put in hours of extra work just to play a game.

      On consoles you have firmware updates, bugs and problems are unfixable unless the dev gets around to it, no mods, forced DRM, all your digital purchases are controlled by hellspawns (Microsoft and Sony, even Nintendo's guilty of that) that charge the same amount for Digital and Physical copies. Hell some Console games now require you to install game files and STILL require the game inside the disc drive. Online features are (XBOX360, XBONE, PS4) hidden behind a Paywall...
      On the PC, sure you got DRM, you got installation, settings... But there's beautifull DRM free GoG, 75% off Steam Sales every other week, fans of the game sharing fixes and workarounds for problems, modding, Baldur's Gate 2, and the games look better. You don't even have to know about building a PC anymore since you can just buy complete machines... You can almost always use every controller you feel like ( Be it a steering wheel, a joystick or a gamepad, and this third party hardware is much cheaper than first party controlers for consoles)
      And you have Baldur's Gate 2, did I mention that? Also depending on how demented you are you always have backwards compatibility, something consoles tossed to the side and killed with a shovel,

    • @DarthKato
      @DarthKato 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Radosław Hołdys
      1-Well, I have had a lot of problems with PCs, and little to none on Consoles. There is no problem there.
      2-I don't like Mods( Most that I have seen don't interest me or are just stupid looking)
      3-Once again, I don't care about graphics that much. If the game looks okay, then I am happy.
      4-As for Baulder's Gate, I can live without it.
      5- I also don't like playing with online because most people are jerks. So I can live with just being able download games and DLC.
      6-Its true that you always have Backwards Compatibility, but eventually the game is going to get so old, that it will be difficult to run.
      7-PCs are expensive to maintain so that they will be able to handle the newest games.
      8- I have no use for steering Wheels or Joysticks, as I don't like Racing or Simulator games.
      Like I said before, if you like PCs that's fine. But they aren't for me. I'm not some Fanboy like some idiot on here accused me of being. I just have a different preference than y'all. That's okay, isn't it???

      Theres a modern patch that fixes all issues and makes game work fine on Windows 7 and 10. It was available at the time of review. Ross just chose to embrace the bugs (and complain about them) just as he decided to disable load-on-the-fly option and cry about loading, ignore tutorial and complain that he didnt get any essential combat skills, ignore block and dodge buttons in the controls section and cry about how he has to constantly chug potions due to tanking hits, or ignore the Might and Fist Mastery spells game deliberately gives him (he scrolls right pass them when he talks about magic, meaning HE HAD USED THEM AT LEAST ONCE) and cry about the totally unfair boss fight game went out of its way to make easy for him.
