Fun fact about the voices in Resident Evil: The actors explained that when they were given lines to read, the japanese guy directing them couldn't actually speak much english, so he kept on insisting they'd put emphasis on the words that he thought sounded cool. This goes a _long_ way to explain the bizarre readings.
Also IIRC several of them weren't voice actors, they were just English speakers who happened to be in Japan at the time and were willing to do it, because Capcom refused to have the dialogue recorded elsewhere and sent to them.
My favorite part about these videos, besides Ross's sense of humor, is his absolute dedication to keep playing and keep going despite countless shitty gameplay mechanics.
Like he did with The Last Stand: Union City, right? He quit a game exploding with potential that was created by ONE man because of a full screen issue that could've been resolved by using the cinematic mode on Kongregate. I mean I love Ross and have been following him since his Machinima days and anticipate his videos to an unhealthy extreme, but what he did to that game was unacceptable.
For me, it's the mystery and surprises of what's coming next. He has a habit of saying "I'll save that for later" and the way he presents it gives it a lot of reward for all the weird and interesting surprises he finds in each game. There were a lot of times where I had no clue what to expect next and his tone of voice really drives that feeling in his videos. Also, as a game developer, I really like his critical analysis on what he wants from a game. I finished watching the whole series just today after binge watching for a few nights this weekend.
This is the kind of dedication that - to me - separates good channels from bad. You know his opinion is full-fledged, because he bothered to complete the game, even if it was garbage.
Guys, apparently the European version, "Frater" is MUCH easier than the American copy. I found a copy of the version I have here if you want the full challenge: www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/windows-games/the-chosen---well-of-souls/ I haven't tested this at all, but it's probably the same thing as I have.
You mean the latest masterpiece of fantasy storytelling from Lucasfilm's™ Brian Moriarty™? Why it's an extraordinary adventure with an interface on magic... stunning, high-resolution, 3D landscapes... sophisticated score and musical effects. Not to mention the detailed animation and special effects, elegant point 'n' click control of characters, objects, and magic spells. Beat the rush! Go out and buy Loom™ today!
I know this review is a few weeks old, but I was wondering if you guys think that the change in difficulty was on purpose (as maybe a "Fuck You" to the American buyers, though I don't know why they would bother to do that in the first place) or if is maybe a coding error, or some obscure third option.
I keep watching the comments waiting for someone who can explain the hidden mechanic that makes this game actually playable. I refuse to believe this is how the game was meant to be.
I watched some other gameplay videos and they didn't have so much trouble with the game. I went to the part where the one hit kill enemies appear and they were taking 1/5 of the wizard's health instead. I haven't found other reviews mentioning a spike this bad in difficulty, in fact what I've read is that there's no tension because you can teleport to safety and heal at any moment just pressing a key.
I'm replying to this comment chain just to be up to date, I love shit like this (and actually have a channel mildly devoted to it), so if we find out what the fuck ruined this game or makes it playable I'd love to know.
Yeah, heyo. I wanna see how this progresses. I honestly doubt Ross is screwing up big time. He seems pretty knowledgeable about general character building in RPGs.
+zaK1946 Sometimes localization adds bugs, for example right now I'm playing Faxanadu and the American version has two major bugs involving two items which should make the game easier and they actually make it harder (one instead of improving your damage decreases it and another becomes worse as you level up).
"I remember when he learned that he was the Chosen One. He left to seclude himself away from civilization. He had to leave and sacrifice his life for us. Only a Chosen One is capable of such sacrifice." So... is Ross the Chosen One?
I keep coming back to this video every few months. It's perfect: cringe dialogue, a reviewer who suffers their way through the game, and gameplay so horrible it's frustrating just to watch it. This video is perfection.
It's impressive how all the reviews still hold up. If anything, Ross's comments on the various games' writing are even more incisive, since game writing and voice acting have continued their general downhill slide.
20 minutes in and the line is "Unplayable" and "Cancer", I really don't know what can make this game fun in any way whatsoever at this point, but lord help me, I'll try to see.
This game wouldn't have been so bad if they added grenades. Not modern grenades, but clay pots with gunpowder inside of them and are lit by a fuse that gives you thirty seconds to throw them. The monster that kills in one hit and takes 103 hits to take down would only take three hits after being hit with one.
It's the quintessential "broken" game. This game needs to constantly play "We have to be careful. This is an emergency area!" every few minutes in order for it to be fixed!
This game had so much effort put into it though, like it could have actually been good if the developers had bothered to, you know, integrate play testing and refactoring into their pipeline. I feel like the developers of this title didn't program at all, they just made art assets as a reskin of another engine. I wonder if a simple mod/rebalance could make it a cult-classic in a Wiesau kind of way.
That does and can happen but it comes to a problem of some devs not knowing how to do something in particular, nor try to fix it, worse if you bought a legit game edit:I should mention that such codings are sensative and can be set off in numorous ways, or a certain file that uses a not so common file format that the game has to detect to see if the game is legit, this has problems as if you try reformatting the game files for being put on an Emarketpalce like steam or GOG then you will run into problems real quickly but for hte most part you can simply reinstall the game and I mean REINSTALL not uninstall then install, it be better as a developer to make the game, make a bocus pirated version that has a file disguised as an esential file and proceed to flood a number of torrents with that and with luck it could work
Ross has stated in a few game dungeons and live streams that he makes a habit of backing up all of his older games. Doing so very likely triggered the games copy protection. Or the version he downloaded had said copy protection enabled.
@@jhngamingetc You know you are comparing programmers of a shitty game that barely anyone remembers nowadays and the legendary insomniac studio? That's like comparing random dude on the street to Muhamad Ali.
*This game is a metaphore for living in Poland.* Now, it might seem like a shallow joke, but check this out: There are 3 classes, but only one doesn't hinder your progress There's only one way to win - taking advantage of the flaws in the system If you want to get anywhere, everyone is against you Talking to other people is rarely any fun - they're shallow and boring Doing simple things like selling and buying shit is full of obstacles for no reason You have no idea how all of this is supposed to work You never get a break Your progress is dependant on how expensive the things you own are Everything looks old and not always in a good way The ending is not rewarding at all and getting to it is a horrible grind that never seems to end No one can speak English that well, even if it seems bearable at first glance People put a lot of effort, time and life into this existing and it's hard to figure out why Every boss is shitty! SEE? This game is truly legendary. It should be in our museums and history books!
I want to go to Poland one day. Simply because it along with most of Eastern Europe seems like it actually lives up to all the stereotypes. For better or worse.
hey Ross i wrote a comment on this earlier but you probably didn't see it could you do a game dungeon episode on the RTS game war of the ring it's really obscure and not that many people know about it just try too find a play through of it on youtube the only results you get is a lets play by some Russian dude
Incidentally, the reason for the abysmal quality of the original RE's voice acting wasn't necessarily because the actors themselves were bad, but rather because the voice director for that game didn't speak a lick of English, and he ended up just stitching together the takes that he thought sounded cool to his ears. It probably sounds perfectly fine if you don't speak any English.
It's like the guy who made level 3 was asked if he playtested it and he just answered "Yeah, I did. You can count on me!". And then he just smoked pot and never looked at it again. And nobody else did either ._.
I don't know if anyone has ever noticed this, but at 34:47, while you're buying potions, the price says they're 100 a pop. However, buying them attaches them to your cursor, forcing you to drag it to your inventory to confirm the purchase. I watched carefully at the gold counter, and I noticed that when you accidentally clicked again and sold the potion *you just bought,* you only got 25 gold back. That's right, you paid 75 gold, *FOR NOTHING,* just because you accidentally clicked one too many times. Great store design, game!
I like that the most devastating bad ending they could think of is "you've become the enemy of Master Alchemist Callidus" They really liked that character
I said the exact same thing while watching it. I said, "I haven't heard a crying scream like that since Nyet III". At least the game didn't quit and erase the save file right afterwards.
Watching this has actually taught me a lot about pacing, difficulty, and encounter design. This feels like it was made by people who understood the pieces that make up a a game, but had no idea how to assemble them. Thank you.
"Hah hah. Fuck you. You're the chosen one." I literally think this is one of, if not the, best lines uttered in a Game Dungeon episode. There needs to be a game, movie, tv show, whatever where this is how the supposed "chosen one" is treated by everybody, until they get sick of their shit and kill everyone.
That’s basically Fallout 2 where you are literally called the Chosen One but nobody cares what your village of primitive ignorant tribals thinks and will laugh in your face if you say what you are. Plus you can kill virtually wveryone.
The anime "Rising of the Shield Hero" does this and it's really great... for the first four episodes. So I really recommend watching it... as long as you stop after that first four episodes.
3rd round of binge watching here. however I am yet undecided when it comes to my favorite. they're all great, however I lean towards story focused games for Ross' unique views. then again his pure and focused spite against this games design is peak relatable frustration.
This series is misnamed. It should be called "Ross's Game Bed and Breakfast", because it's consistently delightful and rejuvenating! Look, there's even a mint on my pillow! Oh, wait, no, that's a palmetto bug. But look, the palmetto bug's wearing a little bow tie! That's adorable.
I'm always perplexed when a game has both this level of passion and this level of stupidly-hard difficulty, because I always have to wonder how the people actually testing the game played it in order to make sure everything was even working...
bartekkko Yeah, technically. "Difficulty" comes in one of three flavours: Hard because legit challenge, hard because grinding needed, and hard because the game hates you and doesn't want you to win. :B
Well, that sometimes happens when a development team doesn't get any input from the outside world. They know the game, all the tactics and variables behind stats. To them everything is obvious because the game is the only thing they think about all day, especially if it's a passion project.
When working on a passion project, smart people take a critical stance that focusing on building a strong core and then constructing outward while... Less-than-smart people take a "my darling angel" stance towards it that wants to make something for their ego.
+Matthew Pherigo building outward from a core isn't always as easy as it sounds. Take doom for example. At it's core, everything fits together, from the weapons, through movement to all enemies, but none of that would matter if the level design was like that from the well of souls. If you had to fight ten cyberdemons in level three, with just a pistol and a shotgun, it would have been a bad game even though the core is solid, because the levels are not designed in accordance with the core.
The way that really tough monster walks and keeps throwing it's arms in the air, makes me think it's constantly mumbling and complaining to itself. Also, that narrator is fascinating, I'm hanging on his every word, eager to hear how he's going to deliver the next sentence.
I'm a little bit late but... That was exactly my thoughts (about monster) Also the narrator - he is so trying to be mysterious so... it works somehow! :-)
I can't get over "for a thousand years a chosen one was picked to stand vigil," that's clunky and redundant, that's like "the selected one was decided." It should be something like "for a thousand years one was chosen to stand vigil," "for a thousand years a chosen one stood vigil," something like that.
It's actually better to have all text dialog than having any bad voice acting. Our brain fills in many blanks through imagination. The personality and voice that people imagine when they read text would make for a better experience than sub-par voice acting. If a game is going to have voice acting, it had better be good.
I played it and liked it as a kid. Shame mage playthrough was impossible at the time. But I did love gun mechanics. Its super clunky but I have super fond memories of it!!!
I cant help but wonder if that abrupt difficulty hike at level three that only stays at level three is the result of some anti-piracy measure that was either activated because of a bug, or because Ross downloaded the game for free and the game became self-aware and realized that. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, an anti-piracy measure inside a game was a protective measure in a game that only made it playable to the people that bought it. These measures used to revolve around needing curtain codes on sheets of paper in order to play a game. Now-a-days, that shit's basically extinct. But some developers have secret ways of trolling game pirates through special lines of code activated only when their game is downloaded for free. These measures could be anything. For example, "Game Dev.Tycoon"'s anti piracy measure has your in-game company go out of business due to fictional pirates in the game. "Skull Girls" gives you a fake error message that makes no goddamn sense. Arma II makes your character permanently drunk and floods the screen with the game's logo. Crow-Team's "Talos Principal" features an elevator that just plain refuses to work if you pirated the game, not allowing you to finish the game at all. I could definitely see these Developers easily doing something like making one level impossible even for them to slog through. But unfortunately for them, Ross is just too damn stubborn to quit.
Kinda necroing your post, but I'd add Serious Sam 3 to the list too with it making unkillable scorpions as one of the miniboss/boss fights when it detects a pirated copy being run.
holy shit, I think that the anti-piracy measure autotriggers on the Nvidia Shield tablet for Talos. Years ago, I tried to play it, and couldn't get past an elevator room.
Mirror's Edge had an anti-piracy measure where your character slows down and stops whenever you run up to the edge of a building, so you can't progress through the game at all.
Spyro is on the list too. If you play first pirated copies, then half way trough the game one of the characters will say that you are playing a pirated game and I quote: "instabilities may occur". After that message you game will glitch in many ways(like reseting all your money from time to time, not letting you safe and other bizarre things), but the cherry on top is that it doesn't let you complete the game, because after certain point it just freezes and resets all your progress.
I remember that Game Dev.Tycoon one. It was pretty clever because the people playing pirated copies complained about that on various forums, both revealing who they were and making them look like hypocrites.
It's out! Rejoice! Those pauses in between each sentence in the intro are so awkward. Ross, I can't believe you didn't pick the character who's voice is at 9:23. It's so great!
"This is freeware so you can try it out for whatever reason" - Nah thanks Ross. I have holes to dig and chores to do. If i wanna hurt myself ill figure of something else.
Except the freeware game doesn't have nearly as much grind and bullshit difficulty that Ross' copy did. According to other commenters, it's perfectly balanced and fixed.
It runs on Space Hack's engine, another i believe polish hack and slash game. It has even the same soundeffects. It was released in 2005 so this just look like a re-skin of that game. Go and check it out, they are almost the same games apart from futuristic world of Space Hack.
Don't you mean '' It runs on Space Hack's engine....... another I believe......... polish hack and slash game......... It has even the same soundeffects......... Ot was released in 2005.......... so it just looks like a reskin..... of that game. Go and check it out........ they are almost the same games........ apart from the futuristic world of space hack. ''
Oh, and I just looked up reviews of this game online. None of them even mention the guy who takes over a hundred hits to kill, and takes you out in one. You'd think someone, *ANYONE* who actually played the game would've mentioned the fact that the warrior class is completely unplayable, and the archer only barely playable. Something happened to your copy, Ross. It must be anti-piracy, or some kind of freak data corruption, or the Elder Gods messing with your game.
It's taken me multiple watches to catch this, but the top 2nd-from-the-left number is a running count of the number of enemies left in the level you are on, going down for each enemy you kill. I assume that's why the game mentions at the final conflict "You have cleared the area of all beasts." What an interesting mechanic. I'm guessing it was both a boon and an emblem of torment for Ross, as he could see close the end of the level was, but also how far away the end of the level was.
I honestly love the stilted voice of the narrator Callidus. It absolutely sounds like a scribe who's entire life has been copying manuscripts by candlelight, and has spoken to other people exclusively to be reminded how important it is that he keep the sacred knowledge of the emerald tablets. He's not some trained orator, he's a hermetic monk who's main social interactions are with the spiders living above the ancient shelf of scrolls. It's amazing and I love it. Justice for my man Callidus!
I love how many voice actors in this Polish game are clearly Polish, but they still read the Polish names, like Kamieniec or Bogusław, with English pronounciation. As for the rest, well, it may be Polish, but it certainly ain't polished.
I love how you do not abide by the normal "rules" of gaming videos. If a game needs 40 minutes, it gets 40 minutes. Great seeing someone with so much dedication.
Hey Ross. Don't know if you'll read it, but I'll write anyway. I picked up the game and started playing it. It really isn't all that bad, I agree with you. Night and day transition, weather, fancy item enhancement mechanic - clearly some passion was put into it. But I digress. Currently I am at the swamps, using melee character. Playing on Hard, obviously. Its really not all that bad. That guy, Vred Solidus? Killed in ~20 hits. I guess I'll just tell you how I tried to tackle the obvious problem you mentioned about inability to tank all the hits. One skill, one particular weapon. Defensive skill - Intimidation. It lowers the speed of melee attacks mobs use in your vicinity. Doesn't seem all that usefull until you try kiting them using melee character. Its actually possible. If you pull back before attack animation of the monster reaches a certain point - he misses. And you can get a free hit in. Now, Intimidation comes into play because most monsters attack too fast for you to pull that off regularly. 20-30% attack speed reduction - and suddenly it is quite manageable. I used health pots on odd ocasions I messed up, including our friend Vred I mentioned above. Weapon of choice - staff. Surprisingly, magician's is a better one (at least lowest level one). It has faster attack and quirky attack animation (used sometimes) which basically dishes out two strikes instead of one. Normal staff (which I went for, and requires a lot of Strength and some Dexterity) is actually fairly worse in performance. It has a few extremely slow winding attacks, which don't hit any harder than the other ones. But that aside, it has the same advantage - range. I am surpsised too, some weapons in this game do have different range. I'd guess that all Two-handed weapons share similar bonus, but didn't try that yet. Suffice to say, with kiting mentioned above, advantage in range allows you to get in 2-3 attacks instead of 1. And since we're not inclined on getting hit at all, we don't really care about absence of the shield. I think I'll continue on, at my own pace, and share my experience. If you're interested, of course.
Yeap, no way around tentacles aside from packing a ranged weapon. Up to this point it was more or less possible to do with just melee weapon. Pretty boring and tiresome, but possible. Tentacles attack from far away, long before you're in range even with staff/spear as a weapon. And their animation is too quick even with debuff from Intimidation. You just have to face tank and spend thousands on potions and repairs or grab a gun and start shooting. Not like you can't pack a ranged weapon with melee build, it seems that damage buffs from Offensive skill are enough to compensate for lack of higher tier weapon. But that kinda defeats the purpose of this, doesn't it? Armor does help quite noticeably to mitigate damage, once you get a heavier one. I could facetank tentacles, say... 4-5 times at least? Without leveling Vitality obviously. But repair costs rack up fast, even more so if you're using uncommon ones. I'd definitely say that ranged>>>melee in this game. Health Potions aren't a problem when you kite with melee, in fact I didn't have to buy them at all and had at least a dozen in surplus. The funny thing is, most of your money will be spent not on weapon, not on armor... but on rings. Yeah, pretty funny. Rings add to stats, which allows you to bypass restrictions you would normally have and pack a weapon that you shouldn't be able to equip yet. In line with that, rings with +5 to all stats or +10 to one stat cost an absurd amounts of money, well over 10 thousand. Compared to any common type weapon costing, say, ~1500 at the same stage of the game. And you don't really need all those uncommond fancy bonuses, maybe excluding attack speed buff. I'll even go as far as to say that you really don't want an uncommond armor or a weapon. The cost to repair them multiplies. And you need all the money you can get to buy Rings. Balancing was definitely not a first or second idea in developer's head.
I've started playing this game as well, on normal tho. Still pretty dam challenging Did you upgraded your weapons? I've upgraded the limb 1-7 to 3-9 points of damage and it is an absolute overkill. When upgrading, any kind of weapon will do. Making a better rifle? Feel free to add some blades and spears Also You can really save your money you spend on potions by quickly going back to lab and talking to alchemist guy. He'll heal you up for free. Risky, but works and saves lots of money.
ThePhirenor I've wrote a separate post about my experience. I don't think I'll be finishing the game, since it is pretty boring. But basically - you don't need to buy potions at all, if you kite properly with melee. Only ranged enemies require you spending potions, but might as well use ranged weapons against them, if it comes to that. Upgrading weapons does provide marginal stat improvement, but the meat of money expenditure definitely lies with rings. Instead of spending thousands on marginal upgrade to damage, you can buy a +5 all stats/+10 one stat ring and equip a higher tier weapon way before you would be able to (as in several levels before you would be able to). Ultimately, rings provide a lot more value in the long run, as long as you're buying the best ones. Not wonder they cost an exorbitant amounts of money compared to any common equipment. Still, slightly upgrading weapons doesn't hurt. So that's it. You spend money mostly on rings upgrading stats. Some on repairs, not that much if you don't use uncommon items. And you really shouldn't, the only usefull stats are attack speed buffs and such, but the cost for repairs ramps up way too high for what really is a commodity rather than necessity. And sometimes you need to buy new weapons/armor, because you didn't luck out on drop. But they don't cost all that much. To be honest, buying a new weapon is almost comparable to repairing your existing gear from 0 durability. To the point where I found it sometimes preferable to use something picked a little more before I can replace a weapon with a higher tier one, instead of repairing. Oh, and one measely stat point bonus for killing off every enemy on the map? Almost not worth it for the time spent checking every tree with your cursor. Then again, the game has so limited resources, that you need all the drop, experience and stat points you can get. Tedious gameplay, and you can't really skip on it without hindering your character progress.
The Mango Baron It is more or less the same in the unpatched version, I did try it out just to be sure. You simply need certain skills and weapons and it becomes possible to kite with melee weapons. Doesn't really matter, since in both versions you're hitting the wall of tentacles with the "melee only" run. At that point, you're more or less forced to use some sort of ranged attack. And I still find it hilarious that probably the best melee in the game is a Wizard weapon.
I decide to check Ross to see if a new game dungeon is out since a forum reminded me he existed. I was not disappointed and I'm now convinced Ross is a hobo wizard.
You think correctly. A real gun sound is often seen as too bland for media, so they find something more interesting. Then you have to make that sound without blowing out your equipment and still getting good audio quality...and this is coming from a total layman that's never tried foley.
When I realized that I clicked on this, but never finished it, I felt like a kid finding an extra present under the Christmas Tree! Seriously Ross, you're one entertaining guy. Keep up the good work, mate!
The thing that amazed me the most was that the combat appeared to be all just basic attacks. Unlike Diablo or practically any of its clones, there were no extra skills that add damage or support your hero at all! Sure the mage had some spells, but no traps or any kind of CC for the Hunter? I would absolutely go insane if I had to kite every freaking thing. Thanks for the review Ross, I had fun and was amazed you stuck through it!
thank you ross, you really put some work into it. Me and my brother are always watching whenever a new game dungeon is out. And this episode is easily one of my faves along with quarantine and polaris snow cross
I had to subscribe after witnessing this nightmare. You...you, Ross, are the Chosen One. After all, as Callidus said, only a Chosen One is capable of such a sacrifice.
The poor difficulty balancing may seem unusual but in just 2019 Borderlands 3 was released with HALF of the campaign not being properly leveled to the player. Resulting in playing god mode and 1 hit killing every enemy because they are 15 levels below you. It took them over a YEAR to fix this and its apparently still broken. Game news sites were literally releasing articles along the lines of "Half the borderlands 3 campaign is no longer broken!" or from forbes: Borderlands 3 campaign broken on release date, still not fixed a year later. And this is a major AAA game. This proves to me that some video games are LITERALLY NOT PLAY TESTED in an ethical way. It took A YEAR for a lot of the games content to even be experienced in an enjoyable way without playing through the game twice to raise the difficulty. Entire multi-hour long gameplay sequences in a 2019 AAA multi million dollar game where you are 1 hitting every enemy and cant die. Also you literally get a legendary weapon drop every five minutes
About enemies raising other enemies - you might not like this mechanic, Ross, but there is a valid point to it. It makes the player get a bit more involved in order to "break the cycle" so the enemies stop getting up, and the best way to do this is by focusing on killing the enemy that's raising other enemies.
The Chosen One and The Evil One - I'd call that unoriginal, but I don't recall both being used in a game before. It's so generic that most game developers would shy away, but not these guys. These developers have gone full circle from generic to unique. Kudos.
I know this took a long time. Thank you so much Ross for providing these game dungeon episodes. I'm willing to wait for quite a while if it's necessary.
Well... with the voice acting. We are talking about a country that to this day does dubbing by making one guy sit in studio and just translating whatever the characters say. There are few exceptions to this, but from what I saw on polish TV channels, almost all movies, serieses, cartoons and so on are dubbed by a signle guy talking over the movie, who sounds as if he was computer generated. Honestly it always drives me up the wall when I hear it. So... when I am playing a polish game... I already expect the voice acting will be all over the place. Luckily there are not many and those few that I have actually played were dubbed into my language by our actors. XD
The (maybe) fact that Ross (probably) was stuborn enough to play this game thought a piracyprotection actually just to heard the silly VA only makes this vid more awesome.
This game is also known as "Frater". No idea why they changed title outside Poland/EU. They also made a game called Space Hack. Basically the same type of gameplay but on a space station and i enjoyed it quite a lot actually.
There was more to the ending... After the pact being restored he gets enough power to challenge the demon of the pact (the mage was the demon in disguise). In the true ending you get your revenge. Also the sacrifice was a trick of the demon, the pact was to sacrifice 01 person per year, the demon chose the only one person the main character actually cared about
Gonna take a wild guess and say level 1 is a intro/tutorial map, everything after was meant for multiplayer and they just didn't bother. Edit: Guess that doesn't make sense considering the later bosses - in the words of James Rolfe "Nah....they just fucked up."
I really appreciate you tubers who make their own subtitles. That extra effort matters to me. Linkara from atop the 4th wall and Hagan a rad movie reviewer, they both stick in jokes sometimes. Oh Phaelous and Allison Praegler both do that too I think. Haven't caught them here, I'll keep an eye out
It's not that unfortunately. The game devs just decided that the US version should be more "difficult" and upped all of the monsters hp and damage by like X2. The Polish and Europian version of the game are far easier. (The "one-shotting" monster from level 3 dies in like 15 hits.)
It's not anti-piracy, Ross played a squishy character and kept it squishy by investing most of his stat points into Dex, a similar issue can be seen with the Fighter if you ignore Vitality, the Fighter's hp starts off higher and gets +4 max hp per point compared to the Hunter's +2 max hp per point. As the Fighter your hp will quickly outscale the damage taken in this game without even factoring in armor or skills that reduce damage taken or reduce's enemy stats, even in this cursed version.
This is actually hilarious lol and to think that guy made like half the games charm by doing that
"STOP, don't OPEN that DOOR!"
Also IIRC several of them weren't voice actors, they were just English speakers who happened to be in Japan at the time and were willing to do it, because Capcom refused to have the dialogue recorded elsewhere and sent to them.
Oh Barry!
I also remember hearing that they spliced multiple takes together but I don't remember where I heard that
My favorite part about these videos, besides Ross's sense of humor, is his absolute dedication to keep playing and keep going despite countless shitty gameplay mechanics.

I think we should all be grateful that at least there weren't any mazes in the game.
He made it clear that he wouldn't play the game all the way to the end if he knew somebody has done it before.

He has a habit of saying "I'll save that for later" and the way he presents it gives it a lot of reward for all the weird and interesting surprises he finds in each game.
To give us this Game Dungeon, Ross had to sacrifice his life for us. Only a Chosen One is capable of such sacrifice.
Honestly, I wouldn't even doubt it. Ross is unique, he seems like a chosen one to me.
I dunno. Ross is no Conan, I don't know if he's cut out to fulfill some prophecies.

Maybe only the american version is fucked?
I'm replying to this comment chain just to be up to date, I love shit like this (and actually have a channel mildly devoted to it), so if we find out what the fuck ruined this game or makes it playable I'd love to know.
Yeah, heyo. I wanna see how this progresses. I honestly doubt Ross is screwing up big time. He seems pretty knowledgeable about general character building in RPGs.
+zaK1946
Sometimes localization adds bugs, for example right now I'm playing Faxanadu and the American version has two major bugs involving two items which should make the game easier and they actually make it harder (one instead of improving your damage decreases it and another becomes worse as you level up).
"I remember when he learned that he was the Chosen One. He left to seclude himself away from civilization. He had to leave and sacrifice his life for us. Only a Chosen One is capable of such sacrifice."

I keep coming back to this video every few months. It's perfect: cringe dialogue, a reviewer who suffers their way through the game, and gameplay so horrible it's frustrating just to watch it. This video is perfection.
Every Game Dungeon is insanely rewatchable for some unknown reason.
I’m going on a binge of this series lol, good to see some others from the present day
It's impressive how all the reviews still hold up. If anything, Ross's comments on the various games' writing are even more incisive, since game writing and voice acting have continued their general downhill slide.
I like to fall asleep to millennial gamers bitching about video games.
glad im not the only one...
It straddles that line between 'so bad it's good' and 'complete rubbish' magnificently.
It really does.

The _Nyet III_ cry at 26:19 was a nice touch. Back references are the best references.
This difficulty spike makes me think that the anti-piracy code glitched and got triggered for a legit game.
That does and can happen but it comes to a problem of some devs not knowing how to do something in particular, nor try to fix it, worse if you bought a legit game
edit:I should mention that such codings are sensative and can be set off in numorous ways, or a certain file that uses a not so common file format that the game has to detect to see if the game is legit, this has problems as if you try reformatting the game files for being put on an Emarketpalce like steam or GOG then you will run into problems real quickly but for hte most part you can simply reinstall the game and I mean REINSTALL not uninstall then install, it be better as a developer to make the game, make a bocus pirated version that has a file disguised as an esential file and proceed to flood a number of torrents with that and with luck it could work
Ross has stated in a few game dungeons and live streams that he makes a habit of backing up all of his older games. Doing so very likely triggered the games copy protection.
Or the version he downloaded had said copy protection enabled.

Welcome to S&M Dungeon
@@cheezorger S&M Dungeon rules the Mesa!
I like that the most devastating bad ending they could think of is "you've become the enemy of Master Alchemist Callidus"

Oh god. It still rings in my memory.
Thank you.
Nicholas Randall huh, nice comment.
"Hah hah. Fuck you. You're the chosen one." I literally think this is one of, if not the, best lines uttered in a Game Dungeon episode. There needs to be a game, movie, tv show, whatever where this is how the supposed "chosen one" is treated by everybody, until they get sick of their shit and kill everyone.
I mean, that's basically Skyrim
So Revenge of the Sith
it's up there with "Someone here had a vision... and we're paying the price for it."

Plus you can kill virtually wveryone.
The anime "Rising of the Shield Hero" does this and it's really great... for the first four episodes. So I really recommend watching it... as long as you stop after that first four episodes.
I'm surprised this game didn't get a Doesn't Respect Your Time award.

I'm always perplexed when a game has both this level of passion and this level of stupidly-hard difficulty, because I always have to wonder how the people actually testing the game played it in order to make sure everything was even working...
It's not even difficulty though is it? Just grind
bartekkko Yeah, technically.
That was exactly my thoughts (about monster)
Also the narrator - he is so trying to be mysterious so... it works somehow! :-)
I can't get over "for a thousand years a chosen one was picked to stand vigil," that's clunky and redundant, that's like "the selected one was decided." It should be something like "for a thousand years one was chosen to stand vigil," "for a thousand years a chosen one stood vigil," something like that.
I think they went with the first one because the other two make it sound like the same guy had the job for a thousand years.
@@jic1 Isn't that what happened?
It's actually better to have all text dialog than having any bad voice acting. Our brain fills in many blanks through imagination. The personality and voice that people imagine when they read text would make for a better experience than sub-par voice acting. If a game is going to have voice acting, it had better be good.
also you read faster than you speak, so you can get more across in text than in audio
that only works if the text they made was any good.
Or have voice acting so bad its good.
Yup, that's why old games like this always frustrated me, I'd turn down the volume so I could read it.
And even if you DO have just walls of text - at least bloody format it properly, with proper tabulation, and hopefully keywords highlighting.

I love how you really make the viewer feel your pain.

I wish the people who made this game put that much thought into it.
I expected a "Doesn't respect your time" award at the end.
Did anyone notice how the weapon icons are lifted directly from Dungeon siege 1?
Wait, so Ross made it past level 3 TWICE? He does mention how last time he played, he quit at the desert level, which comes AFTER level 3.
Still pretty dam challenging
Did you upgraded your weapons? I've upgraded the limb 1-7 to 3-9 points of damage and it is an absolute overkill. When upgrading, any kind of weapon will do. Making a better rifle? Feel free to add some blades and spears
Also
You can really save your money you spend on potions by quickly going back to lab and talking to alchemist guy.
It's rare I watch a video and think "Damn, we're lucky to have this guy". Your determination and effort you put into your channel is admirable.

I was not disappointed and I'm now convinced Ross is a hobo wizard.
"I shall not fall... I shall triumph!"
Amazing
I like the use of the CV-47 weapon sound from Counter Strike.
I'm not too sure I can blame em for using stock sounds like CS did. I wouldn't think gun sounds are easy to make
You think correctly. A real gun sound is often seen as too bland for media, so they find something more interesting. Then you have to make that sound without blowing out your equipment and still getting good audio quality...and this is coming from a total layman that's never tried foley.
On a side note, that's actually an AK47. Counter Strike had to dodge copyright laws when it went on to Steam. Just in case you didn't know.
Aidan Tanaka
Also known by the trope name AKA47.
I was wondering, given I played Counterstrike before steam, starting with 1.2.
Every time Ross makes a new video it's like Christmas.
This voice acting is so amazing. I love it.
I keep coming back to this video for the commentary and the voice acting.
Game Dungeon marathon rolling into 2018
When I realized that I clicked on this, but never finished it, I felt like a kid finding an extra present under the Christmas Tree!
Seriously Ross, you're one entertaining guy. Keep up the good work, mate!
I feel like you deserved a cup of hot tea and a group hug, Ross. Good job. Well done!
The "Yeah, that's helpful" line in response to the narrator babbling about fenugreek always has me in fits of laughter. I'm not quite sure why.
Battling the minions of hell in a fantasy setting with MINIGUNS? How do you fuck that up?
They had to do something to even the odds.
This video has become my top favorite asmr video to sleep peacefully.
idk why lol
I had to subscribe after witnessing this nightmare.
You...you, Ross, are the Chosen One. After all, as Callidus said, only a Chosen One is capable of such a sacrifice.
"Someone here had a vision, and were paying the price for it."
Ross this is your best episode of Game Dungeon.
This narrator would be perfect for your movie. :D
I love how you always keep Promises Ross. You said there will be good thought through Content soon. And here it is. Thanks man.
The nyet 3 cry reference at 26:18 really sells the pain of this game.
Either they expected you to grind more before you advanced or it was an oversight unless you're supposed to fight certain enemies a certain way.
"This is what I'd expect from two D&D players with no acting experience"
So it has authentic dialogue. Great.
Ross, you seriously make some of the best gaming related content on youtube. Thank you.
I shall not fall, I shall triumph.
(cue bombastic music)
XD
I loved this episode. It was very emotional and honest, it shown everything.
The (maybe) fact that Ross (probably) was stuborn enough to play this game thought a piracyprotection actually just to heard the silly VA only makes this vid more awesome.
Ross is the *BOSS!*
Its nice to see another episode of this series.
Do you think they even play tested level three?
They should be on galler now, with narrator above them.
They were too busy tightening up the graphics.
I love how ross doesn't just let the intros play nor does he talk too much over it. It feels like watching a movie with a friend
A game narrated by Tommy Wiseau
i finally remembered what the narrator reminded me of. the cat guy author from the Purge parody episode in Rick and Morty
I love how incredibly determined Ross is. Geez this is some game.
"People often create it themselves."
Yeah, there's 42 minutes and 17 seconds of evidence there.
I really appreciate you tubers who make their own subtitles. That extra effort matters to me. Linkara from atop the 4th wall and Hagan a rad movie reviewer, they both stick in jokes sometimes. Oh Phaelous and Allison Praegler both do that too I think. Haven't caught them here, I'll keep an eye out
This feels like the game's anti-piracy protections got tripped somehow.
It's not that unfortunately. The game devs just decided that the US version should be more "difficult" and upped all of the monsters hp and damage by like X2. The Polish and Europian version of the game are far easier. (The "one-shotting" monster from level 3 dies in like 15 hits.)
@@romulusviragon bunch of idiots but they allowed this video to be made
It's not anti-piracy, Ross played a squishy character and kept it squishy by investing most of his stat points into Dex, a similar issue can be seen with the Fighter if you ignore Vitality, the Fighter's hp starts off higher and gets +4 max hp per point compared to the Hunter's +2 max hp per point. As the Fighter your hp will quickly outscale the damage taken in this game without even factoring in armor or skills that reduce damage taken or reduce's enemy stats, even in this cursed version.
