Thank you ❤ While I wasn't a Grunt I was in country during the Tet 1968 offensive, battle for Hue City and sedge of Khe Sanh We were hammered with 122 mm and B40 rockets for the entire 13 month tour. The two things that we Marines loved were our Corpsman, and the sound of incoming fighter aircraft and helicopters! God bless you and welcome home!
What a fascinating man and story. We have a 35 acre mountain property in the middle of nowhere. We know there are black bears there so we don't go anywhere without the bear spray when we are outdoors. I've studied a lot about what to do, but Brent put a whole different light on it. I learned a bunch more that I didn't know before. Thank you so much for having this man on.
The Black 🐻 Bears where I live PNW want nothing to do with people. I've only seen 2 in the wild, and they were running 🏃♂️ away from me. I do keep Pepper 🌶 Gel with me for different reasons
This brings up some interesting points. I'll give you my take on this. While there have been documented accounts of attacks by black bears in the lower 48 the numbers that I have reviewed in Canada are really shocking to me. Predatory attacks by black bears in BC. Yukon and Alberta far out number anything the lower 48. What I have learned is that black bears in the lower 48 have been hunted heavily and are far more prone to flee when they encounter people. This is learned behavior. This isn't the case in Canada. Huge area's of Canada is wilderness and bear don't encounter humans with anywhere near the frequency that they do in the states. The result is the female has not imparted this learned behavior to her cubs. The bears have no fear of humans and thusly view humans as pray. Most predator attacks in the day are by black bear, while most predator attacks that occur at night are by grizzlies. Time and space doesn't allow me to go into a more lengthy explanation here, I hope that this helps.
And black bears aren’t nearly as dangerous or big as grizzlies. I live in the Adirondacks and black bears walk through people’s yards all the time.

From the bear encounters I've read about lately in a couple of the State/National Parks in the States, there were 2 where bear spray for some reason didn't work & the victims didn't survive. At the 1 site there was 3 empty cans of bear spray found near the unlucky camper. He was able to call for help but wasnt reached soon enough.
The other bear spray failure I think was a hiker but I'm not sure, I just can't remember. Ive heard of a couple others but it's been a long time ago. These 2 stories are recent. It makes me know I would NEVER depend on bear spray if a bear got after me. A human is no match for a bear. An adequate size pistol will take care of a mean bear !
The survival skills he teaches clearly saved him. Absolutely miraculous
The only thing that saved his life was luck. Training just slows down the meal.

It's the typical health/longevity of someone who spent most their lives in the outdoors
There's no certain way to "even look or act" while aged 70 or older. I will be aged 69 in 3 days, 7-28-24, and know when I reach my 70's, it will be no big deal. Not all older people are feeble and ready for the nursing home, unenlightened people.

I Love watching. Yall are so calm and enjoyable. I love Idaho. That’s how I found y’all. Searching videos of Idaho. Idaho has a very special place in my broken heart. My fiancé proposed to me in a fire tower Airbnb in Fernwood. He had a second home in Fernwood and he would go every year in October and stay usually until December. Our trip together was magical.
Early on October 24th, 2018 he told me to get dressed because we weren’t hunting that day. I thought he was taking me to Walmart! He had told me it was around 45 minutes away. We wound up at this fire tower and he had all of our stay planned out. As I was looking around in awe at the beautiful view, I turned to him and he was on one knee crying, holding the most beautiful diamond rind out to me. I was in shock and burst out crying. We were both ugly crying and laughing with joy. Little did we know a month later he would be in the emergency room in Cartersville Ga with a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma and 2 weeks later he passed away. Ten days before our wedding which he had planned on surprising me to occur on Orange Beach in Alabama. He passed away on December 3, 2018. He was 59. A hunter practically from a very early age and this man y’all are interviewing reminds me a lot of Mark. It’s been a very long and hard 5 1/2 years. Losing your mate is the second hardest grief with losing your child/children being the worst. Unfortunately I have several friends who have lost children. Seeing their struggle is heartbreaking. Thank you for your channels. I usually cry while watching but it’s therapeutic because I miss Idaho so much and to live it vicariously through yall is such a special moment for me.

I am so sorry for your loss, it is truly heart breaking. I lost my precious wife two and a half years ago to cancer. I have faced almost every kind of danger that you can think of but the loss of my sweet wife was the hardest thing that I have ever faced and had to deal with! I 🙏For us both!

Living in Montana we deal with bears getting into chicken coops and other things. A friend works for fish wildlife and parks and was out documenting grizzlies in the area and was attacked. Suffered severe head injuries but managed to survive and walked 2 miles out to call for help. Being bear aware is a serious thing.

My son lives in West Yellowstone, Montana and there are several grizzlies as you can imagine. He lives in a place where there is several cabins and his neighbor has pictures of bear tracks beside their houses. I am so paranoid of these creatures.

My surprised barking dog and I just saw our first wild grizzly at thirty feet, us being on a hill; we all saw each other for one minute, we backed away out of his sightline, then ran to our camper. Thrilling and lovely!.

This was a very interesting, well spoken, knowledgeable guy who kept me spellbound with his miraculous escape from a 1500 lb grizzly bear in Kodiac Alaska. He was so interesting because he never paused or stammered through the entire telling of his story and the best part was that he gave God all the glory and honor for his being alive on many occasions. Wow! I watch this with tears in my eyes how close I missed this. I'm 64 now I've been in a wheelchair a quadriplegic. In 2007 the place I was living there was a black bear that showed up in May and gone by June was never seen until next year. In 2007 I invested a lot of my money and someone another story, anyhow I went outside to look at all the trees along a ditch beside the house I planted. The bear had not been seen in several weeks. The dogs in the cages she had outback certainly would let you know there were 4 Pomeranian's in a chain-link cage. It's a beautiful day about 1 PM really hot broad daylight! I'm able to put my hand on top of a joystick in my lap using my shoulder and able to drive the chair by moving my shoulder muscles with my neck. I'm out in the flat level yard there's a cool breeze coming out of a pine thicket. I have Multiple Sclerosis in the heat makes me weak I know that I can't tolerate the heat but the breeze is always blowing from that direction through the thicket there are springs in several places it's like nature's air conditioning. Suddenly the wind stops! I looked to the sky and said, "yeah I know, it's too hot". Meaning the heat makes my weakness worse if I stay up to all I may not be to get back. I get the message. I drive across the yard, I go by the dogs they aren't barking. I drive up onto the porch could hear the phone ringing. I put my foot against the sliding door and swivel my chair to open the door. I go inside and do the same to close it and drive around the corner like making a U-turn around the wall looking at the window facing outside where I just came from. I push the button on my speakerphone with a straw sitting in a jar beside of it using my mouth. I say hello as I watch a huge black bear walk by my bedroom window exactly where I just came from. If the wind had not stopped blowing that day was really unusual I would not be telling you this story I would have experienced what you did. The more I thought about what had just happened I looked down at my lap there were a few Doritos crumbs on my lap where I had a snack earlier. I stayed by myself about 12 hours a day. I would drive up to the bar at my height and eat things like that for a snack. I can't imagine being seriously 2 minutes earlier outside being ripped from my chair while seatbelted at the waist. The chair weighs about 250 pounds so I'm quite aware what the outcome will be. For at least 5 years I've had recurring dreams of being ripped out of my chair in pieces by a black bear.
Tennessee wildlife was called I reported the bear so they came and set a trap to relocate the bear. Several days went by the bear they said took the bait that never went inside for the rest. I told them I saw the bear again last night the dogs started barking. They barked completely different when it's a dear or a person. When a bear comes by there is a growl sound to their barked. I said to my nurse, turn the lights off. Her neighbor daughter-in-law called and said it just walked through their backyard. I am against the sliding door sideways looking and here it comes from my vehicle parked at the bottom of a ramp coming up onto the deck to this door. I am moving! I move across to the wall at the edge of the door where the upright freezer stands and I am leaning forward is much as I can looking around the edge of the freezer. My Cat walks out from under the table towards the door as the bear walks up to the door. He turns sideways parallel with the door and I kid you not. His back was even with the handles on the sliding door! I've never seen a bear that big I've seen them in captivity maybe it was the distance they didn't look so big but this thing was huge!

No incidents or accidents, praise the Lord for my blessing. But there are a few times that I should've died, but I was spared. I don't know what He has in-store for me, but I wait on the Lord.
Hi excuse any ignorance but could you explain the dangers of driving an 18 wheeler? I’m genuinely curious. Is it moreso because it can be difficult to operate the vehicle? I suppose also it depends on the type of 18 wheeler (gas, etc)

We moved to North Eastern Washington and they released recently Grizzlies..I am seeing signs .on our poly water tank that it 8' tall and that PAW WAS HUUGE! My dog's are always with me but my firearm is Not enough power..we are on 28 acres..the neighbors garbage dumpsters are always tipped over garbage all over.. Thank you for expertise..Lord I hope I don't come across one
I had heard that Washington State was planing on doing this and I think it goes beyond irresponsible to borderline criminal for them to do so! We have had one fatal mauling here in North Idaho in I believe 2011 on the Idaho and Montana border. First will be the loss of livestock and then the danger of an attack on people. If your firearm is a 9mm.which is what most folks are caring these days load that puppy up with some G9 Defense Woodsman ammo made right here in North Idaho. This is what I carry in my 9mm as well as my 10 mm. My recommendation is to carry both bear spray in addition to your firearm. The brand of pepper spray that I carry is UDAP and Counter Assault. These two have been use with good results in Alaska and of the two the UDAP is advertised as being the hottest. Also If you are going to carry it buy the magnum size. Once the can is empty it is of on use to you. Stay safe!

There is a man here in Western North Carolina who had his face ripped off by a black bear and survived. After numerous surgeries his face is still a mangled mess. We see black bear all the time walking down the streets here in town. Very thankful we don't have grizzlies or polar bears
If you have that many black bears in your area be very careful and observant. Not too long ago a woman was killed and partly eaten by a black bear in the Smoky Mountain N. park. Black bears have an unfortunate nature to be more of a predator toward people than grizzlies do. If Melissa and Jeremy have me back on their podcast I will go into that in further detail. Stay safe.
I live in Asheville, same thing here. I see them outside my apartment, walking down the street, even around retail stores and the mall. They’re everywhere
@womaninthewave I live at the base of the rockies but have also lived in Tennessee and seen black bears in both places. The size of the bears out here greatly exceed the size of the ones in the east. But the NUMBER of bears that are around people in the East far exceeds the ones here and in my opinion makes them more dangerous for y'all

What an amazing story and conversation. I would agree with Brent's assessment on the bears expansion. We now have more bears in Montana than ever before in recent years. I'm talking about pre protection act. In the last decade in our community, on the east slope of the Rockey Mountains. We live approximately 30 miles out on the plains, and we have several bears in farming country. We have had bears walk right through our backyard. So, we are really experiencing this expansion firsthand. We have "you are in Bear Country" signs right in our school yards. I am recommending, this podcast to everyone in our community. We need to make sure everyone has this information especially for our children. The Fish and Game dept. is not much help except to set barrel traps for relocation to a different area only to have them return within a week. Our mountains here are full and the bears have no other place to go except east to the breaks country to survive. Loved this podcast it is absolutely vital keep up the good work. God Bless you all!

Glad he was able to survive to tell the story. We are in the bears living space. The bear identified a threat in his territory and instinctively acted. The irony is that in the end the bears assessment of the threat was real as he was ultimately killed. Human interference in bear territory can have many negative effects on bears as Brent shares his killing of bears in his camp.

I lived in Alaska for years. But I never felt safe there. You never knew when you might run into a bear while in the woods. Even fishing at the Russian River with many other people nearby, might find you within proximity of a bear. Alaska is not for the faint-hearted. So glad this good man survived his attack.

I live in southwest Arkansas and I had a young black bear hang out in the tree close to my house. For around 36 hours. It slept most of the time. There is no telling how long it had been there while I was outside cleaning and watering my horses water troughs. The are very neat animals. I'm glad I came across your podcast I learn a lot from this.

I guess his god has it in for all the children with terminal cancer. Good thing he likes guys who use high power rifles to kill his majestic creations from a safe distance in service of trophies and bragging rights.
I'm an Australian who as a teenager was our version of an eagle scout at a minimum. I was an avid cadet corp member and by the time I graduated highschool a legit survivalist. I ended up travelling to northern California in early 2001 and bascially hiked various trails across a few states. During that time there were day to day times when black bears particularly would stalk me on the trail. It's interesting coming from a country that has no land animals large enough to be a threat in that situation, but I still remember what being hunted felt like. People think Australia is some landscape of death but we only have one animal here big enough & which targets humans with no concerns. The rest are typically insects and smaller reptiles and can be safely planned for.

Fantastic story teller. My first book report as a city kid in Denver in the 3rd grade, 1967 was about grizzlies. I never had to research them 3:47 again. At that time they became my favorite subject. I really enjoyed your guest! I have always had a fascination with Bears 🐻. Our next door neighbor was a Big game hunter & houndsman. He would get called out too hunt rouge Bears & mountain lions, back in the 50's & 60's. My sister & I would go next-door & listen to all his hunting stories. Some funny, some really scary & tradgic, but always captivating! My family was always into wildlife & the great outdoors. I worked for the US Forest Service in Timber Management & Recreation! I grew up with a lot of hunters! My sister liked Bear hunting. She raised hounds too! I hope you have him back on again to talk more about his Bear safety training!

I can attest to the dangers of the Kodiak brown bears. I was stationed on Kodiak in the Coast Guard base police 1985-1988. I saw more bears on night patrols back in the area where he was working. They are such an awesome animal. I was actually baptized near the mouth of the Buskin river!
Aloha Dk do you happen to know a William Blake he was a loadmaster on a C-130 up there the years you mentioned you were stationed up there?

@@DKHomestead oh ok yeah he flew for a year then switched to the fuel farm for two years then retired , Kodiak sure straightened me out from a punk kid from Hawaii to another island in Alaska in the middle of know where , take care🙏🏽🤙🏽

Great story telling. Im fascinated by bears too but it’s the last thing I want to see in nature.
If you are able to visit Yellowstone NP. spend some time in Haden and Lamar valleys and in time you can observe grizzlies from the safety of you vehicle. The time that I like to visit is the end of May/early June. Not as many tourist there that time of the year.

How amazing! This was fantastic and I loved hearing all about this gentleman and his escapades. How blessed he is indeed. This will be a "must hear" to all those living in the woods country. We have had bear here and found tracks on our five acres. We live in the greater proximity of a large military complex near Tacoma and closer to the mtns so when water is scarce we have activity near the salmon run below us a couple miles. Very interesting indeed. Thank you for sharing this. Please stay safe where you are. You just never know!
