I really love these types of videos! Where I live, we just had Jersey Boys and my dad drummed for it!! I can not wait to play this show in like 10 years time!!!!!
Looks like this tour has different staging from the original. Can you confirm, they cut the drum set on the moving platform that sometimes tracks downstage? Great playing!
Yes, definitely a few changes from the original in this production. Still had the moving platform shifting downstage for a few moments, but the entire band was on this one!
Really enjoyed watching this, good to see how the professionals do it, big thumbs up and thanks for putting it on here. Are you playing to a click in your ears?
Richard Stone thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated. Yes - the audio here was taken as a direct feed from my mixer, so what you hear on the video is exactly what I was hearing in my IEMs. So the count in voice and clicks you can hear were all for the band live at the time.
MikeyJay thanks so much for your reply. As an amateur drummer for many years (mainly as a hobby in covers bands) I find it fascinating how the whole musical production works on these shows. Appreciate your info about the mix and what you hear, very interesting, thank you.
Hmm... that would depend what you mean by “against the click”. I would say in general it’s only there as a guide, and we don’t need to be burying it perfectly every time. Particularly in something like this where the only thing on track is a little bit of Backing Vocal, it’s much more important that the band are together and grooving as a unit. Sometimes that might push the click, sometimes it might drag against it. But if the whole band is doing it together it’s still going to sound great out front.
Yeah I think this was filmed a couple of months into the run, and I usually try to get off the book by then. This score isn’t too crazy so wasn’t too hard for this one. Interestingly though, a lot of other productions of Jersey Boys don’t actually allow the musicians to have charts on stage, so you’ve got no choice but to memorise it from day one!
Shy Guy Epic this tour finished a while ago, but the MD was a guy called Matt Abrams. You can see him most of this video top centre of the screen. Also check out our Keys 2/ Assistant Musical Director, James Beal here: th-cam.com/video/0eUkeXbmb4g/w-d-xo.html - much better quality audio recording of the play out!

Noticed you don’t have a score in front of you, did you have it all memorised?
