Yeah, Bob is/was/will be the center of GBV, but I think he did his best work with Toby and Mitch on board. Shit, Sprout is a great songwriter in his own right and having his songs (and vocals) in the band just made them that much better. Yeah, I know, I'm a "classic lineup" guy--sue me.
Agreed. Kevin Fennel not to forgotten on drums. The “classic line up” However, I think it’s an tie between it and the line up when Nate Farley / Tim Tobias came on board. They meshed well and had a true friendship/bond hamming it up and rocking stage left. Also, they weren’t afraid to party! Shout out to Doug Gillard on guitar. There would be no real GBV without him. Yes, Bob does tons of other projects but without DG. No way.
I’d add that other than Doug on guitar, Mitch Mitchell was effing awesome and had the best stage presence than any other GBV member past or present. Personally, I am not a huge Kevin March fan. Jimmy “Mac” McPherson is technically the best drummer the band hand. However, Kevin Fennel had a great style of his own and props to him.
Damn! To be able to shout something like “Tractor Rape Chain” at Bob and have him say ok, then break into the song. That’s a bucket list item right there.
The Tulsa crew was there with our friends in OKC, oh how sweet it was. First show for us and we got to hang out afterwards with the band, drinking and thinking. We drove up the next day to see them at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, just ridiculously fantastic. And then we repeated the two show vacation the next year in 97'. Don't let incredible music opportunities pass you by, at any age...
Must have been amazing to see this. I assume the audio is straight from the soundboard as I doubt a shithole like this venue could yield something this listenable. Also the fact that Sprout's guitar seems about 2x as loud as Mitch's hints at a board feed (more of Mitch's amp in the room means less of him through the PA). Pretty amazing 120 minutes in such a tiny arena!
Yes I believe so. That shirt is so iconic I wish I knew what it was exactly. It's on the inside art of mag earwhig and it's in a bunch of old pictures of Bob too. Looked on etsy and ebay and haven't had any good results.
this was 20 years ago (now, not when you commented). I have to assume he is using a teleprompter by now. If not then he should really be studied by some scientists at MIT or something.
Nope. No teleprompter. Bob's recall of lyrics is astonishing. Here's the last live gig they played (July 17, 2020 for online video) Rally Boys - th-cam.com/video/1UzA6lLZaa8/w-d-xo.html
I know this comment was three years ago but I wonder this all the time. I can stay in tune drunk. It can be learned as your tolerance grows but I have no clue how he doesn’t burp a lot
I was willing to skip my high school graduation for this show. Lucky for me the show was the next day.
this might be the definitive live tape of this era: zero bullshit, nothing but love in the room, solid a/v quality, and an all-star setlist.
But no Queen of Cans & Jars :(

Mitch and Tobin are essential. Love Bob, I've seen GBV a dozen times and none are even close to with Mitch, Tobin and Greg.

@@gowiththeflow1476 100% agree
@@vladdzuranyuk225 thx bro and glad we have similar thoughts and experiences re GBV. Clearly you get it and have seen them in different lineups. !!
Damn! To be able to shout something like “Tractor Rape Chain” at Bob and have him say ok, then break into the song. That’s a bucket list item right there.
It's awesome Bob primarily constructed the impromptu setlist almost solely from audience requests

Ok, maybe the Bottleneck was the night before..
Bless u GBV road warriors!
How does this not have more likes? One of the best vintages sets out there.
Chris S exactly!
Not about a million likes. Its about you liking it!
For those of us that can't ever shake this beautiful band, my favorite by a mile. An amazing show, thank you!
Most excellent! Their extensive catalog is permanently imprinted upon my mindbrain. Everyday i press the virtual "play button".
I totally read "their expensive catalog."
I couldn't have dreamt a setlist this good
But no Mincer Ray or MVHK?
Insane setlist

This is an awesome show. I saw them 3 days prior in Arizona. Love GBV!
Really kicks in at 7:15!
True....but don't skip the Office of Hearts! GBV ! GBV! GBV!
😀🤘🤘🤘
Toby was the anchor among all the madness that was 1994-1997ish.
Ps. Sweeney was banging Kim deal about this time. Sick bastard
Thank you for posting this gem of all gems, you are a goddamned legend
I think that is Matt Sweeney of Guitar Moves on bass
It is indeed - he was playing in Chavez at the time.
The vibe is so good! And the sweetest time of his writing in my opinion.
One of the best f'n live vids that I have seen....great audio!....and almost the classic line up!
love the black tarp for background effect the ultimate garage band
Is Sweeney's very loud shirt taking the place of Demos's striped pants?
Yes I believe so. That shirt is so iconic I wish I knew what it was exactly. It's on the inside art of mag earwhig and it's in a bunch of old pictures of Bob too. Looked on etsy and ebay and haven't had any good results.
Best melodies I can't think of anyone who does it like them
Saw this lineup in a smallish theater that same year. They killed it.
Finally got to see them live last year at RF, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, hands down.
This is more than pure gold. Sooooooo good.
They are in top form here, just solid as hell.
All the Hits....Sheeeeze
Awesome set-passing it around -i remember seeing this tour-Bob is levitating!
Great set list; great show. Thanks so much.
Thanks for posting! Everything we can see from this tour / the last gasp of this line up is much appreciated.
Bob’s dancing tremendous @8:45
Great setlist, sound, and transitioning lineup at this time, thanks for the upload! Crazy that Game Of Pricks gets played so early in the set.
Classic show!
How the fuck he remember all the lyrics. Rarely see him lose track. Amazing.
I know, right??
flex your brain. He's the master of his own life

It's certainly not the heavy booze consummation.

This is insane!!!🙏
i'd like to know how he doesn't have to constantly burp wile singing drinking all that beer.
I know this comment was three years ago but I wonder this all the time. I can stay in tune drunk. It can be learned as your tolerance grows but I have no clue how he doesn’t burp a lot
Fucking golden moment. Thanks SO MUCH

That Matt Sweeney?
Yeah, that's him. But why was he playing with them, what happened to their previous bass player?
