    I tried plugging when I was staying in Kekaha a few years ago. The only thing I managed to catch was a big Needlefish. But, I did catch a small Omilu on Squid bait along with several other reef fish. It was my first time in Hawaii so it was a great time trying to figure out the fishing. Awesome fish, I hope to get back one day!

      I feel you. It’s fun learning a new area and sometimes very challenging. The last 10 times I’ve gone I’ve only caught small omilu and a few other non target species. But it’s that one big bite that happens every so often that keeps me going back. Tug is the drug!

      I lived in Waimea for 15 years, my wife was raised in Waimea. Kakaha small boat harbor was always a great place to exit from. Once about 200 yards out I was not paying attention and a big surf swept over me.

    Really enjoyed your video and you catch. When I saw you bring your catch up I said, "Such a fine specimen, deserves to be released" Sure enough you did...good job. I practice the same philosophy of catch and release. I just enjoy the making of salt water flies, searching out locations, apply techniques and hopefully hook up. Then the fun begins since I go barbless and have to keep the line tight get 'em netted say a thanks and released. Thanks for sharing will keep up with your episodes.
    I use a Shimano Stradic 3000 and a Fenwick 9' 6" or Shimano Stradic 1000 and a Fenwick 6' 6" or 5' 6". Thinking about picking up a 500 series to use with the 5'6".

      @@cyfishkauai9380 I got back into whipping in 2020 (Covid restrictions; golf). So I basically quit golf after 40 years. Found out I could make it to shoreline and go about whipping without any restrictions. Got to be a science on salt water flies, rig set ups, new tech line (braid), checking out locations all over again, etc. Then there's the whole world of light tackle but not so far to the Ajing style. I may try to put up some videos on flies (my thoughts), whipping rigs...we'll see. It's been fun. Again, keep up the good videos.

      Whipping campania lures and automatic flies (or any locally made flies) with a Carolina rig works very well. Stick baits, poppers and plugs from 1.5 oz and up for bigger game. Then dunking with squid and shrimp is very productive for reef fish. Just gotta put that time in 🤙

      Rule of thumb here is don’t eat roi (peacock grouper). Personally I eat a lot of jack trevally and have never gotten sick but I think the high number of ciguatera poisoning cases from them are because so many people eat them. Here’s a local blog that talks a bit about ciguatera poisoning in Hawaii:

    do you have to wade out far on the reefs to throw plugs like this? I've only been successful whipping Campania lures with a float to catch 1-2 lb papio and omilu...

    • @cyfishkauai9380
      @cyfishkauai9380  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily. I’ve caught some decent omilu off the rocks and even straight off the beach. It all depends on location and timing. I try to go places were not many people want to go because you have to hike in or I’ll try hit some good looking reefs straight off the beach. I like when the weather is poor and there is a lot of waves and current. Seems to be more productive 🤙

    • @cyfishkauai9380
      @cyfishkauai9380  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much can fish anywhere on Kauai but if u want to catch better fish u have to go places where there r not many people. I would suggest areas of reef with deeper spots and some white water. Throw out some shrimp or squid if ur looking to catch anything. Casting out lures or using a Carolina rig for light plastics. It’s all luck and time spend fishing that will catch u fish.

    Can you please tell me what a Aloha pole cost safe for 12 ft and 13 ft casting rods for big round reels like for Penn round reels 4/0&6/0.

    • @cyfishkauai9380
      @cyfishkauai9380  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A rod for a reel that size would be anywhere from $100-$1000. Depends on your budget. I started out with the tsunami airwave elite. Cost about $200

      Keep trying! Never give up. It took me about 6 months before I caught anything on them. But I realized I was using them in the wrong areas. Look for waves and plenty white water. Mark whites create a mean bubble trail when quick retrieving and that’s what will create a reaction bite from bigger fish 🤙
