  • In 1978 the mighty VAN HALEN was setting the whole world on fire with their electrifying live performances.
Somewhere in the bowels of Warner Brothers headquarters, somebody came up with the bright idea of making a radio-special to capitalise on the incredible success the band was experiencing on the road.
Executive Larry White was hired to do the job and he came up with the concept for a radio-special to be titled "Running With Van Halen".
He flew out to join the band on the road in Cleveland and St. Louis in September of 1978, and record bits of pieces of them both on and off stage.
The special was distributed to mostly college radio-stations on reel-to-reel tapes, and we have managed to source these long-forgotten recordings....
You can listen to the full interview with Larry White here:

It was the early years with Dave that cemented the personality of Van Halen. Without him.
No matter how good you think he is/was as a vocalist he was greatly important.

Absolutely agree with you! It was because of diamond dave's banter that they were know as a good time party band. Bottom line....no dave, no van halen

No doubt. If you read Greg Renoff's book, you know how Roth's family $ helped them out a lot!

"Ladies and Gentlemen... I give you the best Guitarist of the 1980's... Edward Van Halen" David Lee Roth 1978.
Right there and then Van Halen started a brand new decade. Two years early.

In 1977/1978 they certainly were in a league of their own, what a magic time!

As a lifelong (Roth era) VH fanatic, I love that there are little gems like this in the rock and roll ether that have somehow escaped my attention. Thanks for posting! 🤘

He went downhill fast. Saw them in 78 and 82 (San Diego). By 82 he was so drunk/coked up and obnoxious he ruined parts of the show with his terrible jokes and rambling

It's interesting because you can hear it sneaking up already as early as these interviews from 1978 - but it would take him another 2-3 years to perfect it!

When they say Hagar sold more that's like saying general motors sold more in 1980 than they did in 1920

@@scottcoleman5088Hagar actually sold less . Yeah there were #1 album sales BUT the sales petered out faster too . The album sales of the first album and 1984 outsold all the Van Hagar albums COMBINED .

I remember my friend's cousins came to PA from Colorado to visit. I was there hanging out when they showed up. After the initial hellos us younger folks went to the family room. The cousins broke out the first Van Halen album and said wait until you guys hear this. We just started laughing so hard, pointing at the turntable. They went over and looked down and my friend's copy was still on it. That was the moment we all knew how very special they were. I don't dislike them with Sammy and was already a fan. But to me it wasn't the same. The best of Van Halen first release had two new songs featuring Dave. Me Wise Magic proved at least at that time if they could have kept it going for a minute they could have burned the world down again. By the time a Different Kind of Truth came out, it just was too late. Unfortunately to me it was mediocre.
