    Your portraits have some vintage feeling not only due to your model styling but because she is a bit tensed knowing she has to stand still for some (long) seconds, like back in the old days 😉

      I wonder if its possible to make it handheld with a stepper motor and a grip like the photosniper.
      With a counterweight fluid rotation should be possible.

      They have, sliding lens adapters have been around for at least 15 years. Those are a bit bigger though, the camera is mounted on a plate behind a lens (i think the ones i saw were large format) and you would slide the camera horizontally and vertically for 6 or so frames in total.

    This adapter looks interesting, but as you said is absolutely the same shooting and stitching the photos without adapters or vintage lenses (but the bokeh is amazing in your lens).
    I did a couple of trials stitching the photos manually, counting a 0.57 crop factor for the medium format (so a 70mm on ff becomes a sort of 40mm, but with the same depth as 70mm as the Medium Format does).
    The tricky part is always to match geometries and moving objects, but for a controlled environment is a beautiful technique!

    Amazing idea! I normally do the trick with my Mamiya 645 lenses and Nikon Z7 and Fotodiox tilt/shift adapter, it also has rotation function by 30°step, you just shift it max to the side and rotate, but this one promising to be a bit faster with 90°step. Especially if you have inpatient model, like kids. The only disappointment for me, absence of Mamiya 645 version:( Mathieu you are opening many of secrets and ideas for people out there)) thanks I really appreciate it. More artistic photographers in this world than better ;) P.S. If you ever use Fotodiox tilt/shift adapter for panoramic stitching of shifted images, try to do it with some tilt, results sometimes are surprising;)

    Finally they made the adapter for Mamiya 645 lenses;) I had ordered one and it's already arrived! Love the 6x6 image from the adapter and Mamiya 645 lenses especially 80mm f1.9 N. And much easier to stitch than from tilt/shift adapter. The only problem is to negotiate with the model to freeze like in old times;) especially with my 6 years old daughter;) In any case the best and cheapest way to medium format world.

      For the medium format look, for the job with customers, I'm now using Nikkor 200mm f2.0g through kipon ng-nz 0.7x adapter/booster to nikon Z system... It gives me 1:1 aspect ratio pictures, on Full Frame without too much vignette and looks like medium format 6x6...
      For most of other cases Nikkor Z 50mm f1.2s and Nikkor Z 85mm f1.2s are covering all my portrait work needs...
      This adapter I'm using only, as a hobby, for the relaxed slow pace shooting... It is still the best with Mamiya 645 80mm f1.9 N, for 3D rendering, pop, especially at close distances to the subject... Also, it is nice rendering with Mamiya 645 45mm f2.8 for landscapes... The only set up I tried so far which can be a better option, is Mitakon 65mm f1.4 on the GFX... But it is expensive, and I have to keep two different camera systems Nikon Z and Fuji GFX, which I want to avoid...

    Would you rather buy this one or for example Kipons speed booster for medium format lenses? How would these compare?

    • @MathieuStern
      @MathieuStern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kipon gives you a 4:3 image, not a 1:1 image also, it adds glass between the sensor and the lens, with the vertex you got exactly what the medium format lens projects on your sensor without extra glass and deformations.

    • @thepriesthoodmedia
      @thepriesthoodmedia ปีที่แล้ว

      The kipon gives you a 3:2 image with a field of view wider and slightly taller than 645 digital. Giving you the option to 4:3 crop and still have a field of view a hair bigger than 645 digital. The added glass does not affect quality in a noticeable way unless you start using filters too. I've done lots of side by side comparisons and saw no difference. However, you can shoot video, handheld, and moving subjects with the kipon.

  • @wilson_law

    Bear in mind, any stitching in camera or on a computer will:
    1. Take time for processing and editing
    2. Most likely have a slight movement from subject that cannot be overlapped despite shooting at the fastest shutter speed (see tony's video regarding pixel shift by olympus)
    You might not think its important but when you have to handle multiple files, and end up having bad overlapping from stitching, you're better off spending your time scanning film instead.
    Plus its not worth investing a whole system from start unless you already have the body and lens. Better off just jump to digital medium format (pentax 645d, 645z, phase one p, hasselblad h, fujifilm gfx)

    It's not much of a "revolution" digital backs to large format cameras have been a thing for a while. Even using scanners, not snapshot Sensors.
    In fact you can get stiching backs for large format cameras that use common FF cameras. I 3D printed a sliding adapter to fit the plate holder of my LF camera and I can stich a 21x8 grid of MFT exposures for a almost LF image.
    That's how I got a burn make on my sensor filter tho.

    The Colin Farrell cameo was priceless! Poor girl. Pixel-maimed by a photographer. Seriously...great photos and info.

    Honestly I think that's F*cking Awesome. Yes it has it limitations but, its really a fun and creative way to use more classic retro large format glass in digital photograph without the hassles and expense of wet film processing and costly old large format cameras (btw I am NOT knocking on Film photographers it just most of us do not have the $$$$ or time to shoot film yet alone large format ) . Also I would image there could also be some mind bending results in studio with more creative control over lighting for portrait , product , real estate and museum cataloging photograph . Wow really think about it, museum's all sizes could at fraction of the cost use this process to create high quality catalogs of their collections for preservation purposes and to create fundraising books /online resources . While still creature fantastic high quality large format digital images at considerable less cost. Thank you Mathieu again for a excellent and exciting video A+ grade as a U.S. folks say.

    I only see one major flaw: That you cant shoot a redundant center shot (with shift?) like you do with the Brenizer method. That way, a (slightly) moving model in the center would absolutely no problem.

    You can go bigger and capture the whole circle of a lens with the Cambo Actus. But it's way more expensive!
