I was looking at the older videoes. Really interesting to see the evolution of the video skills of Rus, and video technology, over the last 11 years, and Russ's perseverance.

I'm a recent convert to friction shifting and am really digging it. It's super nice when you come up to a hill and need to dump all the gears at once vs click-click-click on brifters.

Always good to see you riding around SoCal. Big T is actually closed to traffic right now. If your feeling like having a climb.

Sometimes an easy little spin is what you need after 3 days of rain. Really lifts your spirits. Happy Trails buddy 👍

I rode friction shifting on my touring bike for years. It was an old Fischer Pro Caliber and had Suntour XC pro shifters BB, and hubs. I really like friction shifting for when you just need reliability, like when touring. I fiddle with the shifting to get the perfect and quietest combo when I'm on a long boring stretch, very fidgety, which is good.

Looks like my backyard here outside Phoenix. We just got 3/4" of MUCH NEEDED rain! I'm getting tired of riding on kitty litter... I need some loam!

I lived and worked near there. I drove a lot down LaTuna Canyon road to buy steel for a machine shop. It never occurred to me to ride bike on the rattle snake infested trails. Yet in winter they hibernate. Love the Ascent.

Like the synth pop track on the vid, Russ. Seems like a nice direction for your music beds-supple grooves! Also, totally agree 💯 % about friction shifting with higher gears. I am loving my RVNDL silver shifter with a DuraAce 9 speed derailleur on a 10 speed cassette and it works incredible well with that many gears, proving that “derailleurs are dumb” in a good way!!

It's great to see Russ back in his original Southern California hood. I'm here in Chula Vista, California so I know about this crazy rain he's experienced. It was cold today here (60s), but it was also sunny. I wonder if Russ is enjoying the warmer temperatures of LA temporarily before he goes back to those under 20 temperatures and snow in Missoula.

Yes, ergo alt bars are a real thing. The possibility of a whole new sticker mantra for PLP? That much water in the SoCal desert is going to make a wild February spring. This content is worth waiting for.

So, Hillibikes: maybe you can persuade Will to loan you a Gus or a Clem or a Susie for a quick impressions ride (or six 😁) around Mt Tam while you're down in CA?

I’ve ridden that wash a few times and don’t find it worth the effort only because the paths are hard to follow as they crisscross all over the place and you end up going into sand or a bed of baby heads ( it is a river wash basin after all). It looks like you had some of that too

Whats a well priced friction shifter for up to 11 speeds? Doesn't have to be pretty.. for a winter bike build. Thanks.

  • @robbykills

The only friction that sucks IMO is 9 speed. I find 5-8 great of course and 10 and 11 are good because the spacing is so close you don't really "miss". 9 (Shimano and Campy) is the only one I've ever felt the need to change

  • @donttouchthisatall

Unrelated question, but as a mostly solo-"rider", how do you guys handle bike locks? It's rarely a thing that's talked about in an EDC, but if i wanna go for a coffee-stop there is no way around it. And to be somewhat "safe" mine weighs a hefty 900g.
