    Excellent documentary "quickie." I enjoyed the inside look at the system that gets very little in the way of media publicity.

      I agree! This little documentary has very good information and demonstrates the telescope tracking nicely.

    It is amazing to see a B747 turned in to a telescope at stratosphere... only the operational difficulties they have faced could be turned in to a documentary in my opinion ... how they operate at that height overcome the pressure difference with the new compartment at the back ... also drag differences compared to the original design of the 747 ...damn ... NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ... WHERE ARE YOU . I WANT A DOC. ABOUT THIS BABY .

    ith SOFIA, astronomical observation became close at hand.. very important powerful tool

    will this work on an Airship?

    • @awuma
      @awuma 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An airship doesn't fly very high (probably 15-20 thousand feet tops), whereas to be useful you need to go at least to about 40,000 like SOFIA. Also, it would be hard to mount a telescope on the top of an airship, while below the view is blocked by the hull. On the other hand, balloons are extensively used, going above 100,000 feet, and able to stay up there for weeks (e.g. circumnavigating Antarctica). Look up Project BOOMERANG for a successful example.

    Why dont you use Hubble

    • @stevenbekasov7789
      @stevenbekasov7789 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hubble uses visible light waves which may sometimes not provide enough data, thats where SOFIA comes in using infared waves to look at things we otherwise would never see. The video actually explains this.

      @@stevenbekasov7789 the vatican's Lucifer telescope can do more than that..

    • @stevenbekasov7789
      @stevenbekasov7789 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tagsdaddy unfortunately not, this telescope you are talking about is at ground level where a lot of moisture and atmospheric disturbances can have major impacts on image quality. SOFIA flies above 99% of water moisture and wind where it can impact images, this allows it to take more precise readings.

      @@stevenbekasov7789 yeah i memorized all of that as well. You mentioned Hubble used visual light to image and sofia sees non visible light, just as the Lucifer telescope at the Vatican does. Still makes absolutely no sense, why not put up 1 of those magical satellites instead of waisting a million dollars a flight for..... what has it givin us in return for this budget... or maybe ALL of Hubble's pictures were taken from Sofia. I know I know crazy conspiracy lol but then again you do believe a government run facility is doing something absolutely right and totally transparent with the truth to the funding public lol it's truly a miracle you found one agency

      well, I think it is happening, tech being used primarily for the social networks, or like the nikon p900 to prove no curvature, etc.
      The cat is out of the bag now. Only a revolution/war (which they created all of them since they made the cromwell's revolution) might postpone the process. We'll see
