    This is why I document these places, because unfortunately nothing lasts forever. Have you ever had the chance to see Graffiti highway in person? Share your thoughts!

      We've seen Graffiti Highway together multiple times. Great memories. At least we have the rest of the town to enjoy and appreciate.

      Graffiti Highway, or the abandoned section of Rt 61 as i prefer to call it, has changed so much over the years from my first visit to it in 2012 when there was hardly any Graffiti at all on it. The crack in the road was a lot easier to see and wasn't full of trash back then and burnt tires. Me personally, wish it could still look like that today, but others apparently didn't feel that way and decided it would be better to ruin it for future generations to see a piece of history. For whatever memories that others have had by seeing it, i definitely can not take that away from them and can appreciate what it was to you. We all who have documented it can definitely help future generations to be able to see it as it was and the progression over time as to what it has become.

      I just don't get why they decided to bury a piece a history in dirt and make a popular tourist spot a no trespassing area.

  • @adamtereska8734
    @adamtereska8734 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Saddening that Graffiti Highway is buried, but with people having to be so completely irresponsible in their actions, it comes as no surprise. But for history buffs as myself, there is more to Centralia than the Graffiti Highway. The town itself tells a story; a story that needs to be told with dignity and respect.

    Yes it's sad to see the road covered up at the moment. And I do mean moment. I'd say give it 3-5 years, and if it manages to stay out of the spotlight so they dont cover it up again, the weather will wash most of that dirt away. Especially on the other end where the piles of dirt arn't so grouped up together. So who knows, Graffiti Highway might not be gone forever!

    • @billhardiman4683
      @billhardiman4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Once vegetation takes over, yes it will be gone... That was the whole point. In years to come you wont even see evidence of the former road

    What a coincidence! I just was at knoebels about 3 hours ago, even looked for your writing on the bridge (no luck). Went home through Centralia, and wondered how much of the road is actually covered. I get home, and see this upload! Thanks for the perfect timing!

    Glad you have documented Centralia Jay. Very sad burial. 😔Heat coming out of the rocks is incredible. Right when you said you could cook here I was thinking would make great oven. Think you have said before is surprising there is plant growth so close to the heat. Geyser is really beautiful, just sad about the water. Feel bad for any wildlife drinking it. The bird you showed looked really healthy though, glad to see that. Church is amazing & has stood the test of time there. Centralia is very interesting yet sad part of history. One I think needs told. Again so great what you do Jay to document these important pieces of history. Thanks!! 😊

    Excellent ....yet sad update. Difficult to see the highway covered up by mounds and mounds of fill. It must have cost him a mint to have that trucked in. Great that you mentored Retromantic on Centralia. She did a great job on her video....even though she should have gone in for sutures for her injury immediately. Now she'll have a prominent scar ☹️ Can't fault her for poor footwear. They might not have been hiking boots, but certainly better thanks RJ's SANDLES! Yikes.
    Beautiful drone footage. As a previous commenter noted, the large heart shaped puddle in the fill ...says it all. Thanks for going back.

    There is a documentary that's more than an hour long. It really impacted me and I commented on it in 2019, and there were still about 10 houses with inhabitants in Centralia. One of them was a 34 -year-old man named John Lokitis. The documentary was very interesting and he told how the fire started and some of the older men living there actually said why the fire spread because they lived it. Anyway, I would just like to know if that man still lives there. I was very touched by his story. Great video BTW.

    Thanks for the update video JP. It's tough to see the place buried. I remember going there 12-15 years ago and the bottoms of your sneakers would get hot from walking certain spots on the old highway. Smoke could still be seen in the cracks there and coming out the side hill by the old dump.

    Always nice to see a Centralia vid. I have so many pix myself before they covered it. We were always told to be very careful going off road as you never know where there could be areas of ground instability. Even though the road got covered, there are still a load of places to see but ya definitely gotta be careful lest you wind up paying an early visit to the underworld! And judging by what you're measuring, it is indeed a hell on Earth! Gotta watch for the carbon monoxide as well. Again, thanks for the cool vid! Def will check out Ellen's stuff too!

    Once the vegetation grows over this, which won't take long, the existence of this place will be allegedly forgotten. But, it won't be forgotten by friends and relatives and still living past residents of this town. Tragedy of the coal fire burning for who knows how many more years to come. These videos by JP show us the truths of our past, the mistakes humans make, the waste, the lack of respect for the dead, its important to remember so we may have a chance not to repeat our mistakes. I’m sure that they kept the fill dirt in piles is to keep people from driving down the former “Graffiti Highway”. It won’t take long for trees to grow and you will have to look closely to even see where it once was. Kind of like the TV show “Life After People”. If you haven’t seen it, you should seek it out.

    Man this is sad to see...i had this on my bucket list too. Sad that things got so outta hand there that not only did they have to bury it they had to do it in mounds of Rock and dirt to seal the deal with keeping people and vehicles off..was such a staple for that area..wish people could just learn to respect things so others can enjoy them in the future.

    Hi Jp wow its actually gone in a good way its great that they want to turn it back into nature and it will always be known as the grafetti highway, dos make you wonder just how many lost motorways and old highways are buried or even out there still,. Especially in countries as large as yours,. Hope her knee is okay now🙂, im rather a clumsy guy lowkey and my shoes are terrible for adventures lol,. Loved the drone footage and the revisits, its crazy how hot those vents are you seriously wouldn't want to fall into a sink hole or hidden tavern at all,. Have an amazing rest of your week mate

    Wow I was just telling my son about your previous video with the drone showing piles of dirt. I was there 3 times over the past 6 years. Such a shame. I have memories and lots of pictures. I must ask where is the steam coming from? I never seen anyone go to that spot or I would've headed there years ago . I'm not familiar with the area where the steam is, what is that by? Not familiar with the geyser either where is that? Love your videos ! You have done some in my area,, Hazleton. Ty for the Centralia update I just said to my son I was wondering if you had gone back to see if the road was fully covered. Take care!

      The steam is from the underground mine fire. The areas with steam are east of the town. Just google map search big mine run geyser.

    You could bring a chuck roast and slow cook it for dinner at that cave opening. Maybe potatoes too. I can understand why they had to cover graffiti hwy., but what a shame we had to lose a landmark. Thanks for taking us back. I am subbed to a lot of You Tubers that visited the place several years ago.

    I have a question. Everyone refers to the emissions as steam. Is it actually steam from boiling water heated by the fire? And if the fire is burning coal, where is the burning coal smoke going?

    • @JPVideos81
      @JPVideos81  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Combination of steam and smoke, but mostly steam as the ground is saturated and constantly has water dripping down through the surface.
