Wonderful presentation. Made my Sunday. This gives me a good incentive to start collecting this data in the hope of building one of these fine ships some time in the future to reflect the Maritime history of 1677 even though no specific drawings of these dutch ships in Tobago exist. . . As always your videos are greatly appreciated. Kevin

Thank you very much for this beautiful presentation. I would like to add that some of the drawings have been published in Frank Howard's book "Sailing Ships of War". Also, Shipyard offers a very nice cardboard model (in two scales) of the 3 masted yacht which only slightly differs in size and gunport arrangement. They dated their model in the 1620ties under the name Papegojan - at least 20 years too early in my opinion.
Last year I visited the UelvesbÞller shipwreck which gives some impression of the technique of dutch shipbuilding and frame arrangement. But it is a rather small ship and I don't know how well this extrapolates to larger vessels. It is a very interesting topic indeed. So I hope that one day your findings will be available for the general public.

Thank you so much for your comment and kind words! Yes, these are the same drawings from Howard. I have seen photos of the Papegojan and you may well be right that the inspiration for it are these drawings.
My friend Taras Pevny who recently reminded me of these drawings is in the process of studying them, though I don’t know when he will publish his findings. Until he does, I, obviously, can’t study them specifically.
One day, however, when I find myself with leisure time to spare (meaning after I publish the 40 or so sites that I have to!) I may sit down and redraw the lines of these vessels and run hydrostatic analysis to see how they stack.
There is a mid-17th c wreck of a middling-sized merchant ship that was excavated by the Dutch some decades ago. It has a cursory publication but no detail technical study, as far as I am aware. However what is visible of the frames coincides with what we see in smaller vessels, on Vasa and on Batavia. And on the jachr Vergulde Draeck’s fragments (for it is no more that survives of her), on the Mauritius, etc. Thus the method is well-attested in the archaeological record for variety of sized . In fact, for smaller coastal and inner waters craft, they continued to be built this way into the 19th c.

You inspired me to take a quick dive into historic Dutch measures. Now my head hurts. Feet with 11 inches, why? 12 I am used to .10 ,I get. 11?! Did the Dutch have six toes on one foot and five on the other?

The different towns, regions, provinces were fiercely independent and steeped deep in their traditional rights and privileges that date to the Dark Ages almost. In fact this is how the troubles with the Spanish Habsburg began: the Habsburgs attempted to rationalize the measures and taxes ignoring the local traditions. We know how that ended!

Hello Dr. Batchvarov! This is quite interesting, are these the same drawings Ab Hoving is writing about in his article published in the Nautical Research Journal (65.1, Spring 2020)? In that article his conclusion is pretty much the exact opposite of this video, namely that the paper used in the drawing seems to date from a later period than depicted, and most notably a nice (or rather an accurate) model can't be built from them since a 3D model shows that a ship made from these drawings wouldn't actually float that well... Have there perhaps been further studies since mr. Hoving's that again reverse the conclusions?

As far as I am aware, the paper has been subjected to tests that proved it to be 17th century. Personally I haven’t seen the analysis, but seems to be pretty conclusive. Ab Hoving is a man whom I deeply respect and would never dismiss his opinion lightly. He has done a lot about bringing better understanding of Dutch shipbuilding to the front. His work has been very influential for me.
