    Never heard about the sandpaper/drill method - but just using sandpaper works really well for field-expedient sharpening. Even better so if you insert a piece of soft mat (eg a mousepad) between the table and the sandpaper. If the paper is water-proof, adding a little H2O will speed up the process. Also, when doing this, you learn about the *enormous* differences in the quality of various sandpaper brands.

    I found a floor tile lying around my apartment, not sure if its ceramic or what but it works great for me. It has 2 rough edges and 2 smoother edges which is perfect for sharpening a blade. I sharpened a machete that was dull from cutting through small trees and bushes and it can cut through paper with ease just to give an idea how good this works..

  • @anthonyridge2323
    @anthonyridge2323 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    My favorite is to use the top of my door glass in my truck. Granted it's not truly sharpening the blade as it is honing it but ever since I found that little trick out it's about all I do to maintain my blade edges anymore. Ive heard the rough ceramic bottom on coffee cups works just as well but I find the auto glass much more convenient for me, much, much more space to use the auto glass when compared to the coffee mugs.

    Super easy and quick method i use all the time:
    step:
    1. buy a cheap polish machine or sharpening
    2. make a wheel of MDF en put it on
    3. turn machine on and use a chisel to make the wheel perfect round and egde straight.
    4. put some polishing compound (al-oxide)
    5. sharpen your knife or chisel in 10 sec.
    this will give you a mirror edge and it doesn't heat the blade that quickly.

    My favorite knife sharpening hack is the harbor freight 1x30 Belt Sander only for the belts, you go on Amazon and get the belt specifically for knife sharpening for around $50. But this setup doesn't require the Amazon kit. When I first tried it, I bought a leather belt from eBay and yeah, it definitely works. If the metal of a blade is decent, like not a $10 MTech knife, I can get everything sharp with that route. Now I leave it at work and sharpen all my coworkers knives from home or their personal knife.

    Coffee cups, a good hard ceramic tile [I like the kind which is like china and has the hexagonal processing glue backing pattern because I like how it cuts, but smooth and flat are fine], or, in a real pinch, a high end diamond fingernail file [but you have to go very gently so you do not knock the diamonds off since they are not well mounted!] for a very keen edge.

    the coffee cup trick has saved me so many times over the years....
    and I learned that from watching a docu about glass a couple decades ago, where they pointed out that it's stronger then steel which got me thinking.
    Moral of the comment, think before you act, but being curious is key. for example I'm sure that if you had the finesse/agility to use the flint stone in a lighter you could sharpen the knife better then you could with sandpaper, I would never have though about that if I didn't randomly click on this video because I got curious.

    I and many others were using the so called Scary Sharp process ages before it was introduced, because it works. Of course, we, as beginners to the sharpening world, were just using common sense and taking advantage of what we had. However, we did question our wisdom, since so many "experts" said it was wrong or not good enough. Now, of course, I now the experts weren't [experts].
    A flat piece of glass with wet-or-dry sandpapers will do wonders at sharpening. The water both holds the paper to the glass and lubricates during sharpening (wipe the blade and glass clean between grits. Just work your way up the grits, using the next one to get rid of sanding marks from the previous grit.
    In addition to picking a good sharpening angle, the most critical thing to sharpening is, maintaining it during the sharpening process.
    If you deviate, even a degree or two, you can set yourself back to go. As such, a method or jig to insure you maintain the angle is your best friend.
    Keep in mind, there will always be know-it-alls who ramble about muscle memory, but who don't understand:
    1) many only have to sharpen occasionally, so will never get the practice to develop it; and,
    2) many have a broad assortment of things to sharpen and each one takes a different angle, making it impossible to attain expert muscle memory. That includes things like, kitchen and pocket or skinning knives, all of which require different angles, axes, lawn mower blades, straight edge razors, planer blades, turning knives, chisels, . . .
    ___________________________________
    SIDE NOTE: No one having a knife they like, and having a knowledge of sharpening methods and means, would use a course grinder or gimmick sharpener to sharpen the fine steel of their Spyderco, Benchmade or what-have-you knife. They eat too much treasured steel.
    Eventually, as your sharpening efforts move you farther and farther up the blade, the metal gets thicker, causing the same angle you started with to produce more of an ax like edge than the fine cutting cutting edge you started with. When this happens, we "re-profile" the blade. That is, we take the thickness back down, so the chosen edge angle will still give us the results we wanted.

      Your comment is chock full of information and I’m too exhausted to go thru every point you made :(
      Maintaining a perfect angle is much less important than forming a proper burr, flipping it to form an apex, and then removing the burr. That is all sharpening is. You can get a fucked up edge with little accuracy to the sharpening angle absolutely screaming razor sharp. It just won’t be pretty

    All those methods dont really sharpen a knife "except for sand paper" all they do is make small chips on the knife and it essentially becomes a saw with microscopic "saw teeth" , you are basically sawing the paper not cutting it xD

    Wrapping sand paper works your just did it wrong.. Not to mention you can get a drum sanding attachment for your drill that works great.. Thridly the bottom of a coffee cup can only hone your blade it cannot sharpen a dull knife.. and my last point is that for the nut and bolt hack you're supposed to used hardened steel lugnuts.. Do research before trying to disprove something

    • @OUTDOORS55
      @OUTDOORS55  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I did exactly what was done in other videos without modification lol. Yes I could modify the drill hack to work but that's not what they did in the other videos. Second I have a video where I actually SHARPENED a knife on a coffee cup. Third, hardened steel lug nuts are not close to the hardness needed to sharpen a quality kife blade. Check out how knife steels are graded on hardness. You could also check out some of my other videos. They may enlighten you as to what sharpening means. And why I know what I'm talking about. Thanks for watching 😀

    • @Rusiputki
      @Rusiputki 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried the plywood wheel, it's not a great method and it was a pain to balance it. Again just like the drill, instead of making bench grinder wheel, you might as well just put metal polish on a cardboard and it will give you the same results as a strop.
      p.s I've got 3 wooden wheels I will never use if anybody wants them. They are great for flinging metal polish compound at your face and giving you uneven results.

    why are all of the people commenting on the video acting like they know what they are talking about??! the"sandpaper on drill chuck" thing could have worked if he had used higher grain sandpaper and done it sideways instead of straight, doing this would result in an hollow edge that is a lot sharper than any other edge you could get using wet stones.

    The sandpaper method works (kinda) but you need to know what you are doing to not damage it. Sandpaper is basically improvised turning stone for sharpening.

    • @OUTDOORS55
      @OUTDOORS55  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I labeled it as plausible. It will technically sharpen a knife but NOT recommended. The larger clump of glue under the sand paper is a problem. I have experience doing these type of things. And some knife making in general. Check out some of my other vids. This would not be a good thing for someone looking to sharpen their first knife. It will ruin it. In this video I just repeated what the other hack videos did. I didn't modify it to help them work in any way. Thanks for the comment 👍
