Lincoln of Wayne GM Explains the Three Types of Electric Vehicles: Hybrid, PHEV and BEV

General Manager of Lincoln of Wayne, Peter Spina, Jr., spoke with TAPintoTV about the three kinds of electric vehicles in the automotive marketplace; Hybrid, PHEV, and BEV.
Hybrid vehicles have gas and electric engines but no plug-in charging functionality. “The system charges itself through regenerative braking,” Spina explained. “It harnesses the kinetic energy within the braking system and it uses that to charge the electric battery. Really neat stuff.”
PHEV vehicles are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Currently, Lincoln offers clients two PHEV models--the Aviator and the Corsair. PHEV vehicles like the Lincoln Aviator and the Lincoln Corsair, have a gas and electric engine like hybrid vehicles but allow recharging with plug-in technology. “The vehicle still has regenerative braking and systems within the powertrain to charge the electric battery itself. In addition, you can plug it in and have a direct charge right to the battery,” Spina said.
The last type of electric vehicle in the marketplace today is a BEV, which stands for Battery Electric Vehicle. BEV vehicles rely solely on plug-in capabilities to charge the battery. “There’s no internal combustion engine whatsoever in a BEV. It’s full electric,” Spina said.
Spina explained to TAPintoTV that people have been talking about the future of the automobile industry being electric for years, but “this is not the future of Lincoln. This is here right now,” Spina said.
Lincoln of Wayne already offers its customers several models in their PHEV vehicle fleet with complete support and service. “We also have charging stations in front of our dealership and charging stations internally. We’re ready to go,” Spina explained. “As we continue to roll out more and more electric vehicles, we’ll see this infrastructure internally grow.”
