Wow. That’s a lot!! I give you all kinds of credit for a galant effort! I too think that mob grazing is quite possibly the salvation of our planets soils. I’ve not ever heard until just now in your video of a rancher trying it with bison, so mad respect. I would not have thought that you could keep bison behind hot wire/tape at that density and I guess you had to try everything before you were willing to throw in the towel, for now. Never know what new fencing products, or technology the future could bring or maybe as you suggested more land. But if you take the pressure off you may not get the results you are looking for. Really interesting topic, so glad I saw this and look forward to seeing more of your system. You seem like a very thoughtful, progressive type of young rancher, and we do need many more of your mindset. I wish you much success with your next ideas about how to graze for best soil and grass!!🫶

As a bison rancher, when you started this mob/rotational grazing I had to tune out. Would love to discuss offline, but your herd is going to benefit so much more from open grazing! Don't look at this as defeat....

This is the way some of the bigger ranches are set up. I added extra interior fences but the gates are left open because they move around good on their own. Eventually I will close areas off for up to a year for a break. Herddog tracker will help me decide what to close off. Followed your plan on building the herd. Luckily before prices went way up. Also quality genetics like you suggested. Thank you for all the advice. I’m setting up a facility for training new bison ranchers.

Meant to wander and be their own boss but they still respect and trust to a point it seems...corny but born to be free but. They don't know how blessed they are just like us.

I wondered how that was going for you. Thank you for sharing your experience with it. Allen Savory has presented some really compelling evidence for mob grazing, but the strategy relies heavily on intensely condensed herds and monitoring and moving them throughout the day. In old America, when bison stood shoulder to shoulder, mile upon mile, I imagine this strategy worked quite well for the land. But the bison moved of their own volition back then, and obviously acres and miles are different measurements.
Bison, by nature, are very curious, and those eyes are built to read the landscape. They might see a grove of trees against the horizon line and want to lay in the shade there, or likewise note a particular bush or shrub on the landscape that appeals to them better than the pasture selected for them by the land manager.
The more you try to imagine the world like the buffalo see it, the more it seems boring to graze the same pasture, or be limited to a certain area, or be pushed or confined, or milled about like a machine. There's a lot to see and feel and taste in the bison world, and learning from them by letting them do their own thing makes sense to me.

That was interesting information, Noah. I understand rotational grazing; but, I'm not sure what mob grazing is. It's good to see another video from you. I always enjoy hearing what you have to say about the bison and your experiences.
Your channel inspired me to get into bison/rotational grazing cattle. Ive reached out to a local bison ranch in north central ks but they don’t want to train a 23 year old ecologist to do volunteer work for them I guess.
I am sure mob grazing can work you just need to go back to the drawing board and maybe play around with a few variables after youve recovered from this summers work.
I was wondering if letting your bison walk the entire property had a similar effect to that of cattle or if they still created better microclimates/diversity from coevolving with the plants.
Turner institute of ecoagriculture is studying some of these practices. Some of the ranches Noah visited do rotational mob grazing on a larger scale. The best results are when they don’t come back to a grazed area until another season. Huge expense in cross fence. Manipulate the herd to travel across a vast area is more cost effective. I run a conservation herd so I can’t speak to how rancher does their work. I will say we make no pollution and pay the bills with products that include bison. Grazing bison on native lands and reducing other cattle species is one of the bigger environmental impacts the USA could make. If you visit the national bison website they will set you up with a rancher near you to work with. Good luck to you

I love Bison but this is the reason I’ll never raise them. Rotational grazing is the best form of grazing period. You can’t do it with Bison. That’s why I am thinking of cows. Plus Bison are wild. You can’t trust them around children.

???bison are currently grazed this way at many ranches. The tiny fence that moves not so much.
